Abstract
Human corticospinal excitability (CSE) modulates during movement, when muscles are active, but also at rest, when muscles are not active. These changes in resting motor system excitability can be transient or longer lasting. Evidence from transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) studies suggests even relatively short periods of motor learning on the order of minutes can have lasting effects on resting CSE. Whether individuals are able to return CSE to out-of-task resting levels during the intertrial intervals (ITI) of behavioral tasks that do not include an intended motor learning component is an important question. Here, in twenty-five healthy young adults, we used single-pulse TMS and electromyography (EMG) to measure motor evoked potentials (MEPs) during two different resting contexts: (1) prior to engaging in the response task during which participants were instructed only to rest (out-of-task), and (2) ITI of a choice-reaction time task (in-task). In both contexts, five TMS intensities were used to evaluate possible differences in recruitment of corticospinal (CS) output across a range of inputs. We hypothesized resting state CSE would be greater during ITI than out-of-task rest, reflected in larger MEP amplitudes. Contrary to our hypothesis, we observed no significant difference in MEP amplitudes between out-of-task rest and in-task ITI, and instead found evidence of equivalence, indicating that humans are able to return to a stable motor resting state within seconds after a response. These data support the interpretation that rest is a uniform motor state in the healthy nervous system. In the future, our data may be a useful reference for motor disorder populations with an impaired ability to return to rest.

Abstract
Mental fatigue is common in society, but its effects on force production capacities remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the impact of mental fatigue on maximal force production, rate of force development-scaling factor (RFD-SF), and force steadiness during handgrip contractions. Fourteen participants performed two randomized sessions, during which they either carried out a cognitively demanding task (i.e., a visual attention task) or a cognitively nondemanding task (i.e., documentary watching for 62 min). The mental fatigue was evaluated subjectively and objectively (performances and electroencephalography). Maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) force, RFD-SF, and force steadiness (i.e., force coefficient of variation at submaximal intensities; 25, 50, and 75% of MVC) were recorded before and after both tasks. The feeling of mental fatigue was much higher after completing the cognitively demanding task than after documentary watching (p < .001). During the cognitively demanding task, mental fatigue was evidenced by increased errors, missed trials, and decreased N100 amplitude over time. While no effect was reported on force steadiness, both tasks induced a decrease in MVC (p = .040), a force RFD-SF lower slope (p = .011), and a reduction in the coefficient of determination (p = .011). Nevertheless, these effects were not explicitly linked to mental fatigue since they appeared both after the mentally fatiguing task and after watching the documentary. The study highlights the importance of considering cognitive engagement and mental load when optimizing motor performance to mitigate adverse effects and improve force production capacities.

Abstract
We examined sex-specific changes to neuromuscular function in response to mental fatigue. Twenty-five young, healthy adults (13 F, 12 M) performed a mentally fatiguing task and control condition for 30 min on two separate days. Neuromuscular function was assessed in the first dorsal interosseous before and after each condition. Reaction time decreased after the mentally fatiguing task (P < 0.001, η2 = 0.47). Males and females reported higher levels of subjective fatigue after the mentally fatiguing task (P < 0.02, η2 = 0.07). Motor unit firing rate increased over time at 10% maximal voluntary contraction (MVC; P < 0.04, η2 = 0.16), and decreased over time at 50% MVC (P < 0.01, η2 = 0.14); however, this was not unique to either sex. During a variable force contraction, error decreased in females over time and increased in males (P < 0.05, η2 = 0.13), although changes were not unique to mental fatigue. Physiological function of the neuromuscular system was not specifically affected by mental fatigue in males or females.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Recent studies have questioned previous empirical evidence that mental fatigue negatively impacts physical performance. The purpose of this study was to investigate the critical role of individual differences in mental fatigue susceptibility by analyzing the neurophysiological and physical responses to an individualized mental fatigue task. METHODS In a preregistered ( https://osf.io/xc8nr/ ), randomized, within-participant design experiment, 22 recreational athletes completed a time to failure test at 80% of their peak power output under mental fatigue (individual mental effort) or control (low mental effort). Before and after the cognitive tasks, subjective feeling of mental fatigue, neuromuscular function of the knee extensors, and corticospinal excitability were measured. Sequential Bayesian analysis until it reached strong evidence in favor of the alternative hypothesis (BF 10 > 6) or the null hypothesis (BF 10 < 1/6) were conducted. RESULTS The individualized mental effort task resulted in a higher subjective feeling of mental fatigue in the mental fatigue condition (0.50 (95% confidence interval (CI), 0.39-0.62)) arbitrary units compared with control (0.19 (95% CI, 0.06-0.339)) arbitrary unit. However, exercise performance was similar in both conditions (control: 410 (95% CI, 357-463) s vs mental fatigue: 422 (95% CI, 367-477) s, BF 10 = 0.15). Likewise, mental fatigue did not impair knee extensor maximal force-generating capacity (BF 10 = 0.928) and did not change the extent of fatigability or its origin after the cycling exercise. CONCLUSIONS There is no evidence that mental fatigue adversely affects neuromuscular function or physical exercise; even if mental fatigue is individualized, computerized tasks seem not to affect physical performance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dual-task (DT) walking is of great interest in clinical evaluation to evaluate frailty or cognitive declines in older adults. Frail older adults are known to adopt different walking strategy to overcome fatigue. However, no studies evaluated the effect of muscular or mental fatigue on dual-task walking strategy and the difference between frail and non-frail older adults. AIMS Evaluate the effect of mental and muscular fatigue on spatio-temporal parameters in dual-task walking in young, non-frail and frail older adults. METHODS 59 participants divided into 20 young (Y) (24.9 ± 3 years old), 20 non-frail (NF) (75.8 ± 4.9 years old) and 19 frail older adults (F) (81 ± 4.7 years old) performed single-task (ST) walking, single-task cognitive (serial subtraction of 3), and dual-task (subtraction + walking) for 1 min at their fast pace. Gait speed, step length, step length variability, stance and swing phase time, single and double support time, cadence, gait speed variability were recorded in single- and dual-task walking. The dual-task effect (DTE) was calculated as ((DT - ST)/ST) × 100). Generalized linear mixed models (GLMM) were used to compare the effects of mental and muscular fatigue on gait and cognitive variables between the groups. RESULTS The DTE walking parameters were worse in F compared to NF or Y but no significant effect of fatigue were highlighted except for swing time and single support time DTEs. CONCLUSIONS The results were mitigated but a clear difference in dual-task spatio-temporal parameters was found between F and NF which brings hope into the capacity of DT to better reveal frailty.

Abstract
Previous research demonstrated that there are observable sex differences in developing muscle fatigue when mental task during fatiguing activity is present; however, there is no available review on this matter. Therefore, this review aimed to summarize the findings of previous studies investigating the effect of mental task on muscle fatigue in men and women. To conduct the review, we utilized searches using the electronic databases Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, and EBSCO Cinahl Ultimate. The studies included had no limited publication date and examined the effects of mental task on muscle fatigue in a healthy adult population of any age. The evaluation was performed using the following criteria: time to failure, or subjective scale in various modifications (visual analog scale-VAS, rate of perceived effort-RPE, rate of perceived fatigue-RPF, rate of perceived discomfort-RPD). A total of seven studies met the set criteria, which were subsequently analyzed. Heavy mental task (more demanding math tasks) can reduce the time to failure for both men and women, with the reduction being more pronounced for women than for men. For light mental task (simple math tasks), no reduction in time to failure was observed to a great extent. The mental task in any of the included studies did not affect the subjective perception of fatigue, effort, discomfort, or pain. Although the studies investigating the effect of mental task on sex differences in muscle fatigability are limited, based on our findings we can assume that in jobs requiring heavier mental task, women may be more prone to the faster development of muscle fatigue; thus, employers might consider paying attention to the possibility of adequate rest.

Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to complete a scoping review of the published literature describing the relationship between mental fatigue and various psychiatric disorders, to better understand its frequency and clinical impact, and to provide recommendations for future clinical research.Methods: A scoping review using PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane and PsychArticles databases was conducted using the keywords 'mental fatigue', 'mental tiredness' or 'mental exhaustion', and completed in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocols Extension for Scoping Reviews 2018 checklist.Results: We extracted 10 studies fulfilling our inclusion criteria from a total of 2937 publications. Mental fatigue was studied within mood disorders, anxiety disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder. A commonly used tool to measure mental fatigue in these samples was the Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory-20. Specific cognitive factors (unhelpful beliefs about sleep, symptom-focussed rumination) and personality risk factors (harm avoidance, self-directedness, cooperativeness, persistence) were relevant to predicting mental fatigue symptoms and rates of mental fatigue may vary with gender and diagnosis.Conclusion: Research into mental fatigue in adult psychiatric sample was limited to a few psychiatric disorders and requires further investigation.Key pointsA commonly used tool to measure mental fatigue was the Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory-20. However, more research into the validity and reliability for illness specific instruments to measure mental fatigue in psychiatric population is required.Reduction of mental fatigue was associated with improvement on quality of life.Specific cognitive factors (unhelpful beliefs about sleep, symptom-focussed rumination) and personality risk factors (harm avoidance, self-directedness, cooperativeness, persistence) were relevant to predicting mental fatigue symptoms and rates of mental fatigue may vary with gender.Reviewed articles indicated that mental fatigue presence was associated with lower odds of OCD. In addition, the results suggested that mental fatigue symptoms were more common in individuals with OCPD rather than OCD.Research into mental fatigue in adult psychiatric sample was limited to a few psychiatric disorders and requires further investigation to prevent potential misattribution as mental fatigue symptoms overlap between different psychiatric disorders.

Abstract
The neuromuscular mechanisms leading to impaired motor performance after mental fatigue (MF) are not well-understood and little is known of sex-specific differences in the neuromuscular response to MF. The purpose of this study was to investigate sex-related differences in the impact of MF on neuromuscular function. Thirty young, healthy adults (15F, 15M) performed the Psychomotor Vigilance Task (PVT) to induce MF and watched the Earth documentary (control) for 30 min in a random and counterbalanced order. Before and after each task, measurements of neuromuscular function during submaximal dorsiflexion contractions were obtained. At the end of the PVT, females and males had a slower reaction time (p<0.001, η2p=0.41) and reported higher fatigue (p<0.001, η2p=0.50), suggesting the PVT induced MF. After the PVT, females and males demonstrated a decline in force during 10% maximum voluntary contractions (MVC) (p=0.006, η2p=0.24), slower motor unit firing rate during 20% MVC (p=0.04, η2p=0.15) and a longer cortical silent period (p=0.01, η2p=0.22). However, similar changes were observed in the control condition suggesting MF is unlikely to substantially alter neuromuscular function during submaximal isometric contractions in young, healthy adults. Results also suggest neuromuscular function after a MF task is similar between young, healthy females and males. Further research is required to investigate populations with higher fatigue, such as multiple sclerosis or chronic fatigue syndrome.

Abstract
The effects of mental fatigue have been studied in relation to specific percentages of maximal aerobic or anaerobic efforts, maximal voluntary contractions or the performance of sport specific skills. However, its effects on tremor, dexterity and force steadiness have been only marginally explored. The present work aimed at filling this gap. In twenty-nine young individuals, measurement of postural, kinetic and isometric tremor, pinch force steadiness and finger and hand dexterity were performed before and after either 100 min of mental fatigue or control tasks. During the interventions blood pressure, oxygen saturation and heart rate and perceived effort in continuing the task were recorded every 10 minutes. Tremor was analysed in both time (standard deviation) and frequency domain (position, amplitude and area of the dominant peak) of the acceleration signal. Finger dexterity was assessed by Purdue pegboard test and hand dexterity in terms of contact time in a buzz wire exercise. Force steadiness was quantified as coefficient of variation of the force signal. Postural, kinetic and isometric tremors, force steadiness and dexterity were not affected. Higher oxygen saturation values and higher variability of heart rate and blood pressure were found in the intervention group during the mental fatigue protocol (p < .001). The results provide no evidence that mental fatigue affects the neuromuscular parameters that influence postural, kinetic or isometric tremor, force steadiness and dexterity when measured in single-task conditions. Increased variability in heart rate may suggest that the volunteers in the intervention group altered their alert/stress state. Therefore, it is possible that the alterations that are commonly observed during mental fatigue, and that could have affected tremor, steadiness and dexterity only last for the duration of the cognitive task and are not detectable anymore soon after the mental task is terminated.

Using Machine Learning to Identify Feelings of Energy and Fatigue in Single-Task Walking Gait: An Exploratory Study. APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL 2022. Abstract
The objective of this study was to use machine learning to identify feelings of energy and fatigue using single-task walking gait. Participants (n = 126) were recruited from a university community and completed a single protocol where current feelings of energy and fatigue were measured using the Profile of Moods Survey–Short Form approximately 2 min prior to participants completing a two-minute walk around a 6 m track wearing APDM mobility monitors. Gait parameters for upper and lower extremity, neck, lumbar and trunk movement were collected. Gradient boosting classifiers were the most accurate classifiers for both feelings of energy (74.3%) and fatigue (74.2%) and Random Forest Regressors were the most accurate regressors for both energy (0.005) and fatigue (0.007). ANCOVA analyses of gait parameters comparing individuals who were high or low energy or fatigue suggest that individuals who are low energy have significantly greater errors in walking gait compared to those who are high energy. Individuals who are high fatigue have more symmetrical gait patterns and have trouble turning when compared to their low fatigue counterparts. Furthermore, these findings support the need to assess energy and fatigue as two distinct unipolar moods as the signals used by the algorithms were unique to each mood.

Abstract
Background and purpose Fatigue and cognitive difficulties are reported as the most frequently persistent symptoms in patients after mild SARS‐CoV‐2 infection. An extensive neurophysiological and neuropsychological assessment of such patients was performed focusing on motor cortex physiology and executive cognitive functions. Methods Sixty‐seven patients complaining of fatigue and/or cognitive difficulties after resolution of mild SARS‐CoV‐2 infection were enrolled together with 22 healthy controls (HCs). Persistent clinical symptoms were investigated by means of a 16‐item questionnaire. Fatigue, exertion, cognitive difficulties, mood and ‘well‐being’ were evaluated through self‐administered tools. Utilizing transcranial magnetic stimulation of the primary motor cortex (M1) resting motor threshold, motor evoked potential amplitude, cortical silent period duration, short‐interval intracortical inhibition, intracortical facilitation, long‐interval intracortical inhibition and short‐latency afferent inhibition were evaluated. Global cognition and executive functions were assessed with screening tests. Attention was measured with computerized tasks. Results Post COVID‐19 patients reported a mean of 4.9 persistent symptoms, high levels of fatigue, exertion, cognitive difficulties, low levels of well‐being and reduced mental well‐being. Compared to HCs, patients presented higher resting motor thresholds, lower motor evoked potential amplitudes and longer cortical silent periods, concurring with reduced M1 excitability. Long‐interval intracortical inhibition and short‐latency afferent inhibition were also impaired, indicating altered GABAB‐ergic and cholinergic neurotransmission. Short‐interval intracortical inhibition and intracortical facilitation were not affected. Patients also showed poorer global cognition and executive functions compared to HCs and a clear impairment in sustained and executive attention. Conclusions Patients with fatigue and cognitive difficulties following mild COVID‐19 present altered excitability and neurotransmission within M1 and deficits in executive functions and attention.

Abstract
Mental Fatigue (MF) has been associated with reduced physical performance but the mechanisms underlying this result are unclear. A reduction in excitability of the corticomotor system is a way mental fatigue could negatively impact physical performance. Carbohydrate (CHO) mouth rinse (MR) has been shown to increase corticomotor excitability. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine if CHO MR impacts corticomotor excitability after MF. METHODS: Fifteen subjects (nine females, six males; age = 23 ± 1 years; height = 171 ± 2 cm; body mass = 69 ± 3 kg; BMI = 23.8 ± 0.7) completed two sessions under different MR conditions (Placebo (PLAC), 6.4% glucose (CHO)) separated by at least 48 h and applied in a double-blinded randomized fashion. Motor-evoked potential (MEP) of the left first dorsal interosseous (FDI) was determined by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) before and after MF. Perceived MF was recorded before and after the MF task using a 100 mm visual analog scale (VAS). RESULTS: MF was greater following PLAC (+30.4 ± 4.0 mm) than CHO (+19.4 ± 3.9 mm) (p = 0.005). MEP was reduced more following PLAC (−16.6 ± 4.4%) than CHO (−3.7 ± 4.7%) (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: CHO MR was successful at attenuating the reduction in corticomotor excitability after MF. Carbohydrate mouth rinse may be a valuable tool at combating the negative consequences of mental fatigue.

The effect of flaxseed on physical and mental fatigue in children and adolescents with overweight/obesity: a randomised controlled trial. Br J Nutr 2021; 126:151-159. Abstract
Anti-inflammatory agents such as long-chain n-3 fatty acids have been recognised to improve disease-related fatigue. We hypothesised that α-linolenic acid may also benefit in reduction of fatigue in low-grade inflammation such as overweight/obesity. Seventy-two healthy children and adolescents with BMI > 25 kg/m2 were randomised to flaxseed (n 38) and puffed wheat (n 34) groups. Participants consumed isoenergetic amounts of either 20 g/d flaxseed or 25 g/d puffed wheat for 4 weeks. Fatigue, mood feelings (depression, anxiety and stress), appetite, energy intake, weight, height and waist circumference were measured. Analysis was performed based on per-protocol and intention-to-treat (ITT) approaches. Consumption of flaxseed decreased mental fatigue and caused a significant between-group difference (P < 0·001). Although no significant change in physical and total score of fatigue was observed in either group, a significant between-group difference occurred due to a more remarkable change in these parameters in the flaxseed group. General fatigue, motivation, activity and mood feelings did not change significantly between groups. Flaxseed showed less benefit than puffed wheat on anthropometric measures as it caused a smaller increase in height (0·53 (sd 0·89) v. 1·09 (sd 0·87) cm, P = 0·03) and reduction in BMI (-0·25 (sd 0·63) v. -0·67 (sd 0·56) kg/m2, P = 0·01) than puffed wheat. Appetite and waist circumference decreased in both groups, but no significant difference was observed between groups. In ITT analysis, only alteration in mental fatigue was significant. In conclusion, consumption of flaxseed may improve mental fatigue in children with overweight/obesity. However, because of smaller increase in height, it is better to hinder administration of flaxseed during periods of growth.
