Abstract
Frailty is characterized by an increased vulnerability to adverse health events. Executive function impairment is an early sign of progression towards cognitive impairments. Whether frailty is associated with executive function and the associated mechanisms are unclear. We test the hypothesis that higher frailty is associated with worse executive function (Trail Making Test) and if aerobic fitness, prefrontal cortex oxygenation (ΔO2Hb), or middle-cerebral artery velocity (MCAv) impact this association. Forty-one (38 females) cognitively health older adults (70.1 ± 6.3 years) completed a Trail task and 6-min walk test. Prefrontal cortex oxygenation was measured during the Trail task (via functional near-infrared spectroscopy) and MCAv in a sub-sample (n=26, via transcranial Doppler). A 35-item frailty index was used. Frailty was independently, non-linearly related to trail B performance (Frailty2: β=1927 [95% CI: 321-3533], p = 0.02), with the model explaining 22% of the variance of trail B time (p = 0.02). Aerobic fitness was an independent predictor of trail B (β=-0.05 [95% CI: -0.10-0.004], p = 0.04), but age and ΔO2Hb were not (both, p > 0.78). Frailty was positively associated with the difference between trails B and A (β=105 [95% CI: 24-186], p = 0.01). Frailty was also associated with a higher peak MCAv (ρ = 0.40, p = 0.04), but lower ΔO2Hb-peakMCAv ratio (ρ = -0.44, p = 0.02). Higher frailty levels are associated to worse Trail times after controlling for age, aerobic fitness, and prefrontal oxygenation. High frailty level may disproportionately predispose older adults to challenges performing executive function tasks that may manifest early as a compensatory higher MCAv despite worse executive function, and indicate a greater risk of progressing to cognitive impairment.

Abstract
In older age, frailty is a detrimental transitional status of the aging process featuring an increased susceptibility to stressors defined by a clinical reduction of homoeostatic reserves. Multidimensional frailty phenotypes have been associated with all-cause dementia, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), Alzheimer's disease (AD), AD neuropathology, vascular dementia, and non-AD dementias. In the present article, we reviewed current evidence on the existing links among depressive and biopsychosocial frailty phenotypes and late-life cognitive disorders, also examining common pathways and mechanisms underlying these links. The depressive frailty phenotype suggested by the construct of late-life depression (LLD) plus physical frailty is poorly operationalized. The biopsychosocial frailty phenotype, with its coexistent biological/physical and psychosocial dimensions, defines a biological aging status and includes motivational, emotional, and socioeconomic domains. Shared biological pathways/substrates among depressive and biopsychosocial frailty phenotypes and late-life cognitive disorders are hypothesized to be inflammatory and cardiometabolic processes, together with multimorbidity, loneliness, mitochondrial dysfunction, dopaminergic neurotransmission, specific personality traits, lack of subjective/objective social support, and neuroendocrine dysregulation. The cognitive frailty phenotype, combining frailty and cognitive impairment, may be a risk factor for LLD and vice versa, and a construct of depressive frailty linking physical frailty and LLD may be a good dementia predictor. Frailty assessment may enable clinicians to better target the pharmacological and psychological treatment of LLD. Given the epidemiological links of biopsychosocial frailty with dementia and MCI, multidomain interventions might contribute to delay the onset of late-life cognitive disorders and other adverse health-related outcomes, such as institutionalization, more frequent hospitalization, disability, and mortality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM The relationship between cognitive frailty and depression is unclear and quantitative analyses are lacking. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the relationship between cognitive frailty and depression. METHODS We systematically searched Embase, PubMed, Medline (Ovid), Web of Science, and APA PsycInfo (American Psychological Association PsycInfo) databases until April 2022. Meta-analysis was performed using the Stata software. The prevalence between cognitive frailty and depression them was estimated by extracting the proportion of cognitive frailty and depression in the total number of patients. We extracted odds ratios (ORs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CI) to estimate the relationship between cognitive frailty and depression. RESULTS A meta-analysis of 15 studies revealed that cognitive frailty in older adults was associated with a higher risk of depression (OR = 2.06, 95 % CI = 1.72-2.48, p = 0.001). Eight studies involved the prevalence of cognitive frailty and depression, with an overall prevalence of depression of 46 % (95 % CI, 30 % -62 %; p < 0.0001) in cognitively frail patients. LIMITATION Differences in definitions and assessment methods for cognitive frailty across studies. CONCLUSION The prevalence of cognitive frailty combined with depression in the elderly is high wherein both are mutually affected. More prospective studies are needed to investigate the relationship between cognitive frailty and depression and to propose targeted treatment options and preventive measures to improve the quality of life of the elderly population.

Abstract
ObjectivesThe aims of the study were first to investigate the association between self-perceptions of aging and frailty and second to determine whether self-perceptions of aging affects frailty via depressive symptoms and cognitive status among older adults living in the community in China.MethodsAmong 850 older adults who participated in this cross-sectional study, 822 older adults made valid responses to Tilburg Frailty Indicator, Brief Aging Perceptions Questionnaire, UCLA loneliness scale-8, Mini-Mental State Examination, and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 between March to December 2019. The possible pathways of self-perceptions of aging affecting frailty were analyzed based on the structural equation modeling analysis.ResultsA total of 21.53% of older adults reported frailty. Correlation analyses showed that higher degrees of frailty were related to greater loneliness, more depressive symptoms, more negative self-perceptions of aging, worse locomotive function, and cognitive status (r = 0.267, r = 0.440, r = 0.481, r = 0.451, r = −0.337; p < 0.001). Multiple regression analysis showed that loneliness, depressive symptoms, self-perceptions of aging, locomotive function, and cognitive status were the five factors to be entered the regression equation, and the variance of joint explanation was 46.60%. SPA had a direct effect on frailty (β = 0.306 and p < 0.001), and SPA indirectly affects frailty by independently affecting depressive symptoms (β = 0.391, 95% CI [0.027, 0.061], and p < 0.001) or cognitive status (β = 0.148, 95% CI [0.009, 0.024], and p < 0.001) of older adults.ConclusionThese findings help explain the potential psychological mechanisms through which SPA impacts frailty and may aid community healthcare providers in China in identifying individuals at high risk of frailty. The results suggest that health staff should help older adults improve their perspectives on aging, alleviate or prevent depressive symptoms, and improve cognitive status to delay the progress of frailty and promote healthy aging.

Abstract
The impact of age and biological sex on outcome in moderate/severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) has been documented in large cohort studies, with advanced age and male sex linked to worse long-term outcomes. However, the association between age/biological sex and high-frequency continuous multi-modal monitoring (MMM) cerebral physiology is unclear, with only sparing reference made in guidelines and major literature in moderate/severe TBI. In this narrative review, we summarize some of the largest studies associating various high-frequency MMM parameters with age and biological sex in moderate/severe TBI. To start, we present this by highlighting the representative available literature on high-frequency data from Intracranial Pressure (ICP), Cerebral Perfusion Pressure (CPP), Extracellular Brain Tissue Oxygenation (PbtO2), Regional Cerebral Oxygen Saturations (rSO2), Cerebral Blood Flow (CBF), Cerebral Blood Flow Velocity (CBFV), Cerebrovascular Reactivity (CVR), Cerebral Compensatory Reserve, common Cerebral Microdialysis (CMD) Analytes and their correlation to age and sex in moderate/severe TBI cohorts. Then we present current knowledge gaps in the literature, discuss biological implications of age and sex on cerebrovascular monitoring in TBI and some future avenues for bedside research into the cerebrovascular physiome after TBI.

Abstract
Those living with coexistent frailty and cognitive impairment are at risk of poorer health outcomes. Research often focuses on identifying biological factors. This review sought to identify the association psychological and social factors have with coexisting physical and cognitive decline. Six databases were systematically searched in July 2020. Studies included individuals aged 60 years or older identified as being both frail and cognitively impaired. A narrative synthesis examined patterns within the data. Nine studies were included, most employed a cross-sectional design. Depression was investigated by all nine studies, those with coexistent frailty and cognitive impairment had higher levels of depressive symptoms than peers. Findings were mixed on social factors, although broadly indicate lower education, living alone and lower material wealth were more frequent in those living with coexistent decline. Further research is needed to explore potentially modifiable psychological and social factors which could lead to the development of supportive interventions.

Prevalence and Risk Factors for Cognitive Frailty in Aging Hypertensive Patients in China. Brain Sci 2021; 11:brainsci11081018. Abstract
Hypertension is one of the most common chronic diseases and a major risk factor for stroke, myocardial infarction and cardiovascular death. Cognitive frailty is an important predictor of all-cause mortality and dementia in aging individuals. Hypertension is closely related to cognitive frailty and these two conditions often coexist in aging individuals. Few studies have explored the relationship between hypertension and cognitive frailty in the Chinese population. This study investigates the epidemiological characteristics of and factors related to cognitive frailty in aging Chinese patients with hypertension. In total, cognitive function, weakness, social support, depression and sociodemographic were assessed in 305 participants aged 60 and over. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were constructed. The prevalence of cognitive frailty in aging Chinese hypertensive patients was 9.8% (95% CI = 6.4–13.2%). After adjusting for confounding variables, logistic regression showed that the course of hypertension (6–10 years, OR = 8.588, 95% CI = 1.608–45.859;course of more than 10 years, OR = 9.020, 95%CI = 1.854–43.892), multimorbidity (OR = 11.231, 95% CI = 2.912–43.322), depression (OR = 6.917, 95% CI = 2.424–19.738) and social support (OR = 0.187, 95% CI = 0.071–0.492) were independently associated with cognitive frailty. The prevalence of cognitive frailty in aging patients with hypertension in China should not be ignored. The course of hypertension, multimorbidity and depression are the risk factors of cognitive frailty in the aging population and a better level of social support is the protective factor for cognitive frailty.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Increasing interest in identifying cerebral hemodynamics alterations as a cause of possible onset or worsening of cognitive impairment in elderly patients with vascular risk factors. INTRODUCTION Intracranial ultrasound is a non-invasive, repeatable inexpensive method for recording variation of the cerebral vascular tree in physiological and pathological conditions and the diagnosis of vascular dementia (VaD). METHODS PubMed, Embase, Cochrane library and reference lists have been searched for articles published until March 30, 2020. RESULTS Clinical studies reported different Transcranial Doppler (TCD) parameters and subsequently transcranial duplex with color code (TCCD) in patients affected by vascular dementia. The number of studies using TCCD remains limited and most of the available data are still based on TCD. However, the use of transcranial Doppler could better stratify elderly patients with initial signs of cognitive impairment. CONCLUSION Intracranial ultrasound employment to detect cerebral hemodynamic changes in VaD patients has been briefly discussed in this review.
