Humor Coping Reduces the Positive Relationship between Avoidance Coping Strategies and Perceived Stress: A Moderation Analysis

Exploration of family caregivers' experiences on coping in dementia care in Ghana: a phenomenological study

BACKGROUND

Dementia is an important public health and geriatric concern for sub-Saharan African countries, including Ghana. Evidence shows that persons living with dementia are often supported and cared for by family caregivers in the community. In the execution of these services to the persons living with dementia, family caregivers are overwhelmed and experience heightened stress that results in serious repercussions. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore family caregivers' experiences on coping in dementia care in Ghana.

METHODS

Adopting a descriptive phenomenological design, individual face-to-face interviews were conducted among thirty unpaid family caregivers of persons living with dementia in Ghana. Semi-structured interview guides were used. The data analysis process followed Clarke and Braun's framework analysis.

RESULTS

Six themes were generated from the textual data. These themes were captioned as: (1) empathy and perspective-taking; (2) family support and cohesion; (3) coaxing and pampering of persons living with dementia; (4) humour and positive communication; (5) spiritual support; and (6) ethical/moral consideration in dementia caregiving.

CONCLUSION

We conclude that unpaid family caregivers of persons living with dementia in Ghana adopt varied strategies to cope with the strains of caregiving. Healthcare facilities that provide services to persons living with dementia could incorporate caregiver preparatory training or education for family caregivers. This training should focus on briefing family caregivers about the potential strains that they are likely to encounter. Also, the training could focus on equipping family caregivers with the knowledge and skills to effectively communicate and care for the persons living with dementia using person-centered approaches. Key stakeholders such as the Ghana Health Service and Alzheimer's Ghana must raise awareness about the dangers of caregivers' violation of the autonomy and freedom of persons living with dementia as they navigate through the challenges of caregiving. Lastly, faith-based institutions need to be considered as key stakeholders in dementia interventions since they could play a critical role.

Feasibility and acceptability of a theory-based online tool for reducing stress-induced eating

Stress-induced eating is associated with various health risks like obesity and cardiovascular disease, exacerbated by the overconsumption of unhealthy foods. This study sought to investigate replacement coping strategies for stress-induced eating that participants can seek to implement using behaviour change techniques like implementation intentions. The study adopted a feasibility and acceptability design, with 258 participants (88.37% female) aged 17-75 years old who self-reported stress-induced eating. Participants were asked to identify cues for their stress-induced eating and evaluate the acceptability of eight potential replacement coping strategies. After selecting their preferred strategy, participants formed implementation intentions, linking the strategy with their previously identified cues. There were six themes of cues for stress-induced eating as identified by participants, including a range of external and internal stressors. Themes regarding the acceptability of the replacement coping strategies were organised based on constructs from integrated social cognition theories. Participant responses reflected cognitive and affective attitudes, and control and normative beliefs behind engagement in coping behaviour; further, automatic and volitional processes were described by participants as playing a role in whether a coping strategy was deemed as useful. Plans formulated by participants commonly detailed specific situations and strategies to utilise, though few described start times or durations of their plan. Action planning was found to significantly increase following formation of implementation intentions, and participants' descriptions supported the feasibility and acceptability of utilising implementation intentions to adopt alternative coping strategies to stress-induced eating. Future research should conduct a randomised controlled trial to assess the efficacy of the implementation intentions intervention in promoting uptake of replacement coping strategies to reduce stress-induced eating.

Energizing Workplace Dynamics: Exploring the Nexus of Relational Energy, Humor, and PsyCap for Enhanced Engagement and Performance

This study delves into the dynamics of relational energy (RE) within an organizational context, examining some of its antecedents and decedents. Specifically, it investigates the influence of psychological capital (PsyCap) and humor on RE, and, subsequently, the latter's impact on job performance (JB) mediated by job engagement (JE). A research model based on structural equation modeling carried out with 481 employees in private service industries demonstrates several key relationships. It reveals that both PsyCap and affiliative humor positively affect RE, while aggressive humor exerts a negative influence. Furthermore, RE shows a positive association with JE and JP, with JE serving as a mediator. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first study to present an integrated model encompassing this exact combination of influencers and consequences of RE, as well as the first to be investigated within the Western Balkans cultural context. Therefore, it represents a novel approach. Additionally, the research addresses crucial questions regarding the existence and strategic significance of RE within organizational interactions. The findings offer valuable insights for organizations seeking to enhance employee engagement, performance, and wellbeing-even during health crises such as COVID-19-by fostering RE. This study advances the understanding of RE in organizational settings and provides a foundation for future research in this domain.

Exploring coping strategies of emergency medical technicians against COVID-19 stress: a qualitative study

Introduction

The COVID-19 pandemic has been shown to cause enormous psychological burden among health care workers, including first responders. However, the psychological well-being of first responders, essential in the fight against COVID-19 pandemic, has often been ignored. This qualitative study aimed to explore the coping strategies used by EMTs to manage stress during the pandemic.

Methods

The research was designed as a qualitative study, utilizing a thematic analysis framework. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 EMTs from a single geographic area between September 2022 and December 2022. The data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke analytic techniques, and this study used Lincoln and Guba's to assess the reliability of the data.

Results

Four main coping strategies emerged from the data: seeking social support, practicing self-care, utilizing coping mechanisms, and finding meaning and purpose in work. EMTs sought support from both professional and personal sources, engaged in physical and emotional self-care, used humor and distraction as coping mechanisms, and found meaning and purpose in helping others and growing as professionals.

Conclusion

Based on the extracted results from the study on EMTs in Iran, it can be concluded that the importance of social support cannot be overstated, as it serves as a crucial buffer against the negative effects of stress and trauma. The findings suggest that addressing the social and emotional needs of EMTs is important for promoting their mental health and well-being during the pandemic.
