Influence of Surface Ligands on Charge-Carrier Trapping and Relaxation in Water-Soluble CdSe@CdS Nanorods

Screening Cobalt-based Catalysts on Multicomponent CdSe@CdS Nanorods for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution in Aqueous Media

We present CdSe@CdS nanorods coated with a redox-active polydopamine (PDA) layer functionalized with cobaloxime-derived photocatalysts for efficient solar-driven hydrogen evolution in aqueous environments. The PDA-coating provides reactive groups for the functionalization of the nanorods with different molecular catalysts, facilitates charge separation and transfer of electrons from the excited photosensitizer to the catalyst, and reduces photo-oxidation of the photosensitizer. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirms the successful functionalization of the nanorods with cobalt-based catalysts, whereas the catalyst loading per nanorod is quantified by total reflection X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (TXRF). A systematic comparison of different types of cobalt-based catalysts was carried out, and their respective performance was analyzed in terms of the number of nanorods and the amount of catalyst in each sample [turnover number, (TON)]. This study shows that the performance of these multicomponent photocatalysts depends strongly on the catalyst loading and less on the specific structure of the molecular catalyst. Lower catalyst loading is advantageous for increasing the TON because the catalysts compete for a limited number of charge carriers at the nanoparticle surface. Therefore, increasing the catalyst loading relative to the absolute amount of hydrogen produced does not lead to a steady increase in the photocatalytic activity. In our work, we provide insights into how the performance of a multicomponent photocatalytic system is determined by the intricate interplay of its components. We identify the stable attachment of the catalyst and the ratio between the catalyst and photosensitizer as critical parameters that must be fine-tuned for optimal performance.

Light-driven reversible charge transfers from ITO nanocrystals

The combination of semiconductors and redox active molecules for light-driven energy storage systems has emerged as a powerful solution for the exploitation of solar batteries. On account of this, transparent conductive oxide (TCO) nanocrystals (NCs) demonstrated to be interesting materials, thanks to the photo-induced charge accumulation enabling light harvesting and storage. The charge transfer process after light absorption, at the base of the proper use of these semiconductors, is a key step, often resulting in non-reversible transformations of the chemicals involved. However, if considering the photocharging through TCO NCs not only as a charge provider for the system but potentially as part of the storage role, the reversible transformation of the redox compound represents a crucial aspect. In this paper, we explore the possible interaction of indium tin oxide (ITO) NCs and typical redox mediators commonly employed in catalytic applications with a twofold scope of enhancing or supporting the light-induced charge accumulation on the metal oxide NC side and controlling the reversibility of the whole process. The work presented focuses on the effect of the redox properties on the doped metal oxide response, both from the stability point of view and the photodoping performance, by monitoring the changes in the optical behavior of ITO/redox hybrid systems upon ultraviolet illumination.

Optical properties of NIR photoluminescent PbS nanocrystal-based three-dimensional networks

The assembly of nanocrystals (NCs) into three-dimensional network structures is a recently established strategy to produce macroscopic materials with nanoscopic properties. These networks can be formed by the controlled destabilization of NC colloids and subsequent supercritical drying to obtain NC-based aerogels. Even though this strategy has been used for many different semiconductor NCs, the emission of NC-based aerogels is limited to the ultraviolet and visible and no near-infrared (NIR) emitting NC-based aerogels have been investigated in literature until now. In the present work we have optimized a gelation route of NIR emitting PbS and PbS/CdS quantum dots (QDs) by means of a recently established gel formation method using trivalent ions to induce the network formation. Thereby, depending on the surface ligands and QDs used the resulting network structure is different. We propose, that the ligand affinity to the nanocrystal surface plays an essential role during network formation, which is supported by theoretical calculations. The optical properties were investigated with a focus on their steady-state and time resolved photoluminescence (PL). Unlike in PbS/CdS aerogels, the absorption of PbS aerogels and their PL shift strongly. For all aerogels the PL lifetimes are reduced in comparison to those of the building blocks with this reduction being especially pronounced in the PbS aerogels.

Investigation of the Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production of Semiconductor Nanocrystal-Based Hydrogels

Destabilization of a ligand-stabilized semiconductor nanocrystal solution with an oxidizing agent can lead to a macroscopic highly porous self-supporting nanocrystal network entitled hydrogel, with good accessibility to the surface. The previously reported charge carrier delocalization beyond a single nanocrystal building block in such gels can extend the charge carrier mobility and make a photocatalytic reaction more probable. The synthesis of ligand-stabilized nanocrystals with specific physicochemical properties is possible, thanks to the advances in colloid chemistry made in the last decades. Combining the properties of these nanocrystals with the advantages of nanocrystal-based hydrogels will lead to novel materials with optimized photocatalytic properties. This work demonstrates that CdSe quantum dots, CdS nanorods, and CdSe/CdS dot-in-rod-shaped nanorods as nanocrystal-based hydrogels can exhibit a much higher hydrogen production rate compared to their ligand-stabilized nanocrystal solutions. The gel synthesis through controlled destabilization by ligand oxidation preserves the high surface-to-volume ratio, ensures the accessible surface area even in hole-trapping solutions and facilitates photocatalytic hydrogen production without a co-catalyst. Especially with such self-supporting networks of nanocrystals, the problem of colloidal (in)stability in photocatalysis is circumvented. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and photoelectrochemical measurements reveal the advantageous properties of the 3D networks for application in photocatalytic hydrogen production.

Lateral charge migration in 1D semiconductor-metal hybrid photocatalytic systems

Colloidal nanorods based on CdS or CdSe, functionalized with metal particles, have proven to be efficient catalysts for light-driven hydrogen evolution. Seeded CdSe@CdS nanorods have shown increasing performance with increasing rod length. This observation was rationalized by the increasing lifetime of the separated charges, as a large distance between holes localized in the CdSe seed and electrons localized at the metal tip decreases their recombination rate. However, the impact of nanorod length on the electron-to-tip localization efficiency or pathway remained an open question. Therefore, we investigated the photo-induced electron transfer to the metal in a series of Ni-tipped CdSe@CdS nanorods with varying length. We find that the transfer processes occurring from the region close to the semiconductor-metal interface, the rod region, and the CdSe seed region depend in different ways on the rods' length. The rate of the fastest process from excitonic states generated directly at the interface is independent of the rod length, but the relative amplitude decreases with increasing rod length, as the weight of the interface region is decreasing. The transfer of electrons to the metal tip from excitons generated in the CdS rod region depends strongly on the length of the nanorods, which indicates an electron transport-limited process, i.e., electron diffusion toward the interface region, followed by fast interface crossing. The transfer originating from the CdSe excitonic states again shows no significant length dependence in its time constant, as it is probably limited by the rate of overcoming the shallow confinement in the CdSe seed.

Rich Landscape of Colloidal Semiconductor-Metal Hybrid Nanostructures: Synthesis, Synergetic Characteristics, and Emerging Applications

Nanochemistry provides powerful synthetic tools allowing one to combine different materials on a single nanostructure, thus unfolding numerous possibilities to tailor their properties toward diverse functionalities. Herein, we review the progress in the field of semiconductor-metal hybrid nanoparticles (HNPs) focusing on metal-chalcogenides-metal combined systems. The fundamental principles of their synthesis are discussed, leading to a myriad of possible hybrid architectures including Janus zero-dimensional quantum dot-based systems and anisotropic quasi 1D nanorods and quasi-2D platelets. The properties of HNPs are described with particular focus on emergent synergetic characteristics. Of these, the light-induced charge-separation effect across the semiconductor-metal nanojunction is of particular interest as a basis for the utilization of HNPs in photocatalytic applications. The extensive studies on the charge-separation behavior and its dependence on the HNPs structural characteristics, environmental and chemical conditions, and light excitation regime are surveyed. Combining the advanced synthetic control with the charge-separation effect has led to demonstration of various applications of HNPs in different fields. A particular promise lies in their functionality as photocatalysts for a variety of uses, including solar-to-fuel conversion, as a new type of photoinitiator for photopolymerization and 3D printing, and in novel chemical and biomedical uses.

The Other Dimension-Tuning Hole Extraction via Nanorod Width

Solar-to-hydrogen generation is a promising approach to generate clean and renewable fuel. Nanohybrid structures such as CdSe@CdS-Pt nanorods were found favorable for this task (attaining 100% photon-to-hydrogen production efficiency); yet the rods cannot support overall water splitting. The key limitation seems to be the rate of hole extraction from the semiconductor, jeopardizing both activity and stability. It is suggested that hole extraction might be improved via tuning the rod's dimensions, specifically the width of the CdS shell around the CdSe seed in which the holes reside. In this contribution, we successfully attain atomic-scale control over the width of CdSe@CdS nanorods, which enables us to verify this hypothesis and explore the intricate influence of shell diameter over hole quenching and photocatalytic activity towards H₂ production. A non-monotonic effect of the rod's diameter is revealed, and the underlying mechanism for this observation is discussed, alongside implications towards the future design of nanoscale photocatalysts.

Quantum dot gels as efficient and unique photocatalysts for organic synthesis

Here we report CdS quantum dot (QD) gels as highly efficient and unique photocatalysts for organic synthesis. We found that the photocatalytic activity of CdS QD gel was superior to phosphine oxide- and thiolate-capped CdS QDs for dehalogenation and α-amine arylation reactions because of the high accessibility of its surface sites to the substrates. In addition, we discovered the unique reactivity of CdS QD gel for ring-opening during α-amine arylation of tetrahydroisoquinoline via the reductive cleavage of C-N bonds. QD gels provide new opportunities in photocatalysis due to their unique surface interactions with the substrates or intermediates.

Rhodium-Complex-Functionalized and Polydopamine-Coated CdSe@CdS Nanorods for Photocatalytic NAD+ Reduction

We report on a photocatalytic system consisting of CdSe@CdS nanorods coated with a polydopamine (PDA) shell functionalized with molecular rhodium catalysts. The PDA shell was implemented to enhance the photostability of the photosensitizer, to act as a charge-transfer mediator between the nanorods and the catalyst, and to offer multiple options for stable covalent functionalization. This allows for spatial proximity and efficient shuttling of charges between the sensitizer and the reaction center. The activity of the photocatalytic system was demonstrated by light-driven reduction of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD⁺) to its reduced form NADH. This work shows that PDA-coated nanostructures present an attractive platform for covalent attachment of reduction and oxidation reaction centers for photocatalytic applications.

Defect Passivation in Lead-Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals and Thin Films: Toward Efficient LEDs and Solar Cells

Lead-halide perovskites (LHPs), in the form of both colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) and thin films, have emerged over the past decade as leading candidates for next-generation, efficient light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and solar cells. Owing to their high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs), LHPs efficiently convert injected charge carriers into light and vice versa. However, despite the defect-tolerance of LHPs, defects at the surface of colloidal NCs and grain boundaries in thin films play a critical role in charge-carrier transport and nonradiative recombination, which lowers the PLQYs, device efficiency, and stability. Therefore, understanding the defects that play a key role in limiting performance, and developing effective passivation routes are critical for achieving advances in performance. This Review presents the current understanding of defects in halide perovskites and their influence on the optical and charge-carrier transport properties. Passivation strategies toward improving the efficiencies of perovskite-based LEDs and solar cells are also discussed.

Ultrafast Electron Transfer from CdSe Quantum Dots to an [FeFe]-Hydrogenase Mimic

The combination of CdSe nanoparticles as photosensitizers with [FeFe]-hydrogenase mimics is known to result in efficient systems for light-driven hydrogen generation with reported turnover numbers in the order of 10⁴-10⁶. Nevertheless, little is known about the details of the light-induced charge-transfer processes. Here, we investigate the time scale of light-induced electron transfer kinetics for a simple model system consisting of CdSe quantum dots (QDs) of 2.0 nm diameter and a simple [FeFe]-hydrogenase mimic adsorbed to the QD surface under noncatalytic conditions. Our (time-resolved) spectroscopic investigation shows that both hot electron transfer on a sub-ps time scale and band-edge electron transfer on a sub-10 ps time scale from photoexcited QDs to adsorbed [FeFe]-hydrogenase mimics occur. Fast recombination via back electron transfer is observed in the absence of a sacrificial agent or protons which, under real catalytic conditions, would quench remaining holes or could stabilize the charge separation, respectively.
