Adsorption and Photocatalytic Reduction of Carbon Dioxide on TiO2

Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) for Photoelectrochemical CO2 Reduction: Efficiency, Selectivity, and Stability

Massive emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) have caused environmental issues like global warming, which needs to be addressed. Researchers have developed numerous methods to reduce CO2 emissions. Among these, photoelectrochemical (PEC) CO2 reduction is a promising method for mitigating CO2 emissions. Recently, Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) has been recognized as good photocathode candidate in PEC systems for CO2 reduction due to its earth abundance and non-toxicity, as well as its favourable optical/electrical properties. The performance of PEC CO2 reduction can be evaluated based on its efficiency, selectivity, and stability, which are significantly influenced by the photocathode materials. As a result, researchers have applied various strategies to improve the performance of CZTS photocathodes, including band structure engineering and surface catalytic site engineering. This review provides an overview of advanced methods to enhance the PEC systems for CO2 reduction, focusing on CZTS.

Polymer Membrane Modified with Photocatalytic and Plasmonic Nanoparticles for Self-Cleaning Filters

In this study, we developed a filtering material for facial masks, which is capable of trapping and subsequent inactivation of bacteria under white light emitting diodes (LED) or sunlight irradiation. Such a functionality is achieved via the modification of the composite membrane based on porous polymer with photocatalytic (TiO₂) and plasmonic (Ag) nanoparticles. The porous polymer is produced by means of a computer numerical control machine, which rolls a photoresist/thermoplastic mixture into a ~20-µm-thick membrane followed by its thermal/ultraviolet (UV) hardening and porosification. TiO₂ nanoparticles are prepared by hydrothermal and sol-gel techniques. Colloidal synthesis is utilized to fabricate Ag nanoparticles. The TiO₂ photocatalytic activity under UV excitation as well as a photothermal effect generated by plasmonic Ag nanoparticles subjected to LED irradiation are studied by the assessment of methylene blue (MB) decomposition. We demonstrate that, in contrast to the filter of the standard facial medical mask, the polymer membrane modified with spray-coated TiO₂ and Ag nanoparticles prevents the penetration of bacillus subtilis from its top to bottom side and significantly inhibits bacterial growth when exposed to LED or sunlight.

Heterogeneous Photocatalysis as a Potent Tool for Organic Synthesis: Cross-Dehydrogenative C-C Coupling of N-Heterocycles with Ethers Employing TiO2/N-Hydroxyphthalimide System under Visible Light

Despite the obvious advantages of heterogeneous photocatalysts (availability, stability, recyclability, the ease of separation from products and safety) their application in organic synthesis faces serious challenges: generally low efficiency and selectivity compared to homogeneous photocatalytic systems. The development of strategies for improving the catalytic properties of semiconductor materials is the key to their introduction into organic synthesis. In the present work, a hybrid photocatalytic system involving both heterogeneous catalyst (TiO₂) and homogeneous organocatalyst (N-hydroxyphthalimide, NHPI) was proposed for the cross-dehydrogenative C-C coupling of electron-deficient N-heterocycles with ethers employing t-BuOOH as the terminal oxidant. It should be noted that each of the catalysts is completely ineffective when used separately under visible light in this transformation. The occurrence of visible light absorption upon the interaction of NHPI with the TiO₂ surface and the generation of reactive phthalimide-N-oxyl (PINO) radicals upon irradiation with visible light are considered to be the main factors determining the high catalytic efficiency. The proposed method is suitable for the coupling of π-deficient pyridine, quinoline, pyrazine, and quinoxaline heteroarenes with various non-activated ethers.

A Review on Halide Perovskite-Based Photocatalysts: Key Factors and Challenges

A growing number of research articles have been published on the use of halide perovskite materials for photocatalytic reactions. These articles extend these materials' great success from solar cells to photocatalytic technologies such as hydrogen production, CO₂ reduction, dye degradation, and organic synthesis. In the present review article, we first describe the background theory of photocatalysis, followed by a description on the properties of halide perovskites and their development for photocatalysis. We highlight key intrinsic factors influencing their photocatalytic performance, such as stability, electronic band structure, and sorption properties. We also discuss and shed light on key considerations and challenges for their development in photocatalysis, such as those related to reaction conditions, reactor design, presence of degradable organic species, and characterization, especially for CO₂ photocatalytic reduction. This review on halide perovskite photocatalysts will provide a better understanding for their rational design and development and contribute to their scientific and technological adoption in the wide field of photocatalytic solar devices.

Assessment of the Different Type of Materials Used for Removing Phosphorus from Wastewater

Reducing the costs associated with water management, improving water quality and the environment are fundamental requirements of sustainable development. Maintaining the optimal level of phosphorus has a direct impact on water quality and the biological system. Current methods used in tertiary wastewater treatment for phosphorus removal present several disadvantages that influence the final water processing cost. Therefore, it is essential for water quality and food safety to develop ecological, cheap and highly efficient materials. This study reported the first comparative assessment of three different types of materials (magnetic, semiconductors and composite) as environmentally friendly, cheap adsorbents for phosphorus removal from wastewater. Several experiments were done to investigate the influence of adsorbent type, dosage and contact time on the efficiency of the processes. The adsorption process was fast and equilibrium was reached within 150 min. We found that the phosphorus adsorption efficiency on of these materials was higher than the chemical method. The obtained results indicated that specific surface area directly influences the performance of the adsorption process. EDS analysis was used to analyze adsorbents composition and analyze the type and content of elements in the substrate before and after reaction with wastewater.
