Heterogeneous Photo-Fenton Reaction for Olive Mill Wastewater Treatment—Case of Reusable Catalyst

Application of halophiles in UMFC (upflow microbial fuel cell) for the treatment of saline olive oil industrial wastewater coupled with eco-energy yield

The olive oil industry faces a major problem of treating the wastewater with high organic content and safe disposal. Olive oil industrial wastewater (OOIWW) consists of highly toxic environmental pollutants with high salinity. Saline olive oil industrial wastewater was treated using halophilic consortium in UMFC (upflow microbial fuel cell) mobilized with carbon felt as electrode. Total and soluble COD (chemical oxygen demand), total suspended solids and phenol content removal were studied at different organic loads (0.56, 0.77, 1.05, 1.26, 1.52 and 1.8 gCOD/L). UMFC with OOIWW was optimized at 1.52 gCOD/L for high organic removal and corresponding electricity production. Total COD, soluble COD, TSS and phenol removal were 91%, 89%, 78%, and complete removal of phenol was accomplished at the optimized organic load (1.52 gCOD/L). Correspondingly, the maximum bioenergy yield was 784 mV with 439 mW/m2 (power density) and 560 mA/m2 (current density), respectively. The presence of prominent halophilic exo-electrogens such as Ochrobactrum, Marinobacter, Rhodococcus and Bacillus potently treated the OOIWW and exhibited high energy yield.

Treatment technologies for olive mill wastewater with impacts on plants

Olive mill wastewater (OMW), produced during olive oil production, contains high levels of salt contents, organic matter, suspended particles, and toxic chemicals (particularly phenols), which all result in increased biological and chemical oxygen demand. Olive Oil Mills' Wastes (OMW), which have dark brown color with unpleasant smell, consist mainly of water, high organic (mainly phenols and polyphenols) and low inorganic compounds (e.g. potassium and phosphorus), as well as grease. OMW components can negatively affect soil's physical, chemical, and biological properties, rendering it phytotoxic. However, OMW can positively affect plants' development when it's applied to the soil after pretreatment and treatment processes due to its high mineral contents and organic matter. There are various approaches for removing impurities and the treatment of OMW including chemical, biological, thermal, physiochemical, and biophysical processes. Physical techniques involve filtration, dilution, and centrifugation. Thermal methods include combustion and pyrolysis; biological techniques use anaerobic and aerobic techniques, whereas adsorption and electrocoagulation act as physiochemical methods, and coagulation and flocculation as biophysical methods. In contrast, combined biological treatment methods use co-digestion and composting. A comparison of the effects of both treated and untreated OMW samples on plant development and soil parameters can help us to understand the potential role of OMW in increasing soil fertility. This review discusses the impacts of untreated OMW and treated OMW in terms of soil characteristics, seed germination, and plant growth. This review summarizes all alternative approaches and technologies for pretreatment, treatment, and recovery of valuable byproducts and reuse of OMW across the world.

Recovery of hydroxytyrosol from olive mill wastewater using the promiscuous hydrolase/acyltransferase PestE

Olive mill wastewater (OMWW) is produced annually during olive oil extraction and contains most of the health‐promoting 3‐hydroxytyrosol of the olive fruit. To facilitate its recovery, enzymatic transesterification of hydroxytyrosol (HT) was directly performed in an aqueous system in the presence of ethyl acetate, yielding a 3‐hydroxytyrosol acetate rich extract. For this, the promiscuous acyltransferase from Pyrobaculum calidifontis VA1 (PestE) was engineered by rational design. The best mutant for the acetylation of hydroxytyrosol (PestE_I208A_L209F_N288A) was immobilized on EziG² beads, resulting in hydroxytyrosol conversions between 82 and 89 % in one hour, for at least ten reaction cycles in a buffered hydroxytyrosol solution. Due to inhibition by other phenols in OMWW the conversions of hydroxytyrosol from this source were between 51 and 62 %. In a preparative scale reaction, 13.8 mg (57 %) of 3‐hydroxytyrosol acetate was extracted from 60 mL OMWW.

Modification of a Brazilian natural clay and catalytic activity in heterogeneous photo-Fenton process

The catalytic activity of a Brazilian natural clay modified with the immobilization of iron oxide was applied in the heterogeneous Fenton process for the degradation of the antibiotic sulfathiazole (STZ). The clay without any treatment indicated a lamellar type material with mesoporous distribution that presents a heterogeneous mixture of phases (type 1:1 and 2:1 structures), with a predominance of quartz, montmorillonite, gibbsite and kaolinite, and with SiO₂, Al₂O₃, Fe₂O₃, K₂O, TiO₂, MgO as major oxides. Its high absorption in the UV-Vis ranges with a bandgap energy of 1.9 eV was attributed to the presence of hematite. It was observed that the effects of the addition of starch before heat treatment, and impregnation with iron, modified the clay surface. F rom the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis it was concluded that a structural reorganization is related to the conversion of the various iron oxide phases into hematite, as well as promoting an increase in Fe²⁺/ Fe³⁺ redox reactions allowing rapid degradation of STZ. The catalyst impregnated with iron and treated at 600 °C showed to be an economical and versatile catalyst with high catalytic efficiency (>97% STZ degradation after 60 min), with small differences according to the type of LED device used. Furthermore, it presented high stability and reusability reaching 93% degradation of STZ after four cycles of reuse with low consumption of H₂O₂.
