Recent Advances on Metal Oxide Based Nano-Photocatalysts as Potential Antibacterial and Antiviral Agents

Photocatalytic systems: reactions, mechanism, and applications

The photocatalytic field revolves around the utilization of photon energy to initiate various chemical reactions using non-adsorbing substrates, through processes such as single electron transfer, energy transfer, or atom transfer. The efficiency of this field depends on the capacity of a light-absorbing metal complex, organic molecule, or substance (commonly referred to as photocatalysts or PCs) to execute these processes. Photoredox techniques utilize photocatalysts, which possess the essential characteristic of functioning as both an oxidizing and a reducing agent upon activation. In addition, it is commonly observed that photocatalysts exhibit optimal performance when irradiated with low-energy light sources, while still retaining their catalytic activity under ambient temperatures. The implementation of photoredox catalysis has resuscitated an array of synthesis realms, including but not limited to radical chemistry and photochemistry, ultimately affording prospects for the development of the reactions. Also, photoredox catalysis is utilized to resolve numerous challenges encountered in medicinal chemistry, as well as natural product synthesis. Moreover, its applications extend across diverse domains encompassing organic chemistry and catalysis. The significance of photoredox catalysts is rooted in their utilization across various fields, including biomedicine, environmental pollution management, and water purification. Of course, recently, research has evaluated photocatalysts in terms of cost, recyclability, and pollution of some photocatalysts and dyes from an environmental point of view. According to these new studies, there is a need for critical studies and reviews on photocatalysts and photocatalytic processes to provide a solution to reduce these limitations. As a future perspective for research on photocatalysts, it is necessary to put the goals of researchers on studies to overcome the limitations of the application and efficiency of photocatalysts to promote their use on a large scale for the development of industrial activities. Given the significant implications of the subject matter, this review seeks to delve into the fundamental tenets of the photocatalyst domain and its associated practical use cases. This review endeavors to demonstrate the prospective of a powerful tool known as photochemical catalysis and elucidate its underlying tenets. Additionally, another goal of this review is to expound upon the various applications of photocatalysts.

Nanowonders in agriculture: Unveiling the potential of nanoparticles to boost crop resilience to salinity stress

Soil salinization significantly affects crop production by reducing crop quality and decreasing yields. Climate change can intensify salinity-related challenges, making the task of achieving global food security more complex. To address the problem of elevated salinity stress in crops, nanoparticles (NPs) have emerged as a promising solution. NPs, characterized by their small size and extensive surface area, exhibit remarkable functionality and reactivity. Various types of NPs, including metal and metal oxide NPs, carbon-based NPs, polymer-based NPs, and modified NPs, have displayed potential for mitigating salinity stress in plants. However, the effectiveness of NPs application in alleviating plant stress is dependent upon multiple factors, such as NPs size, exposure duration, plant species, particle composition, and prevailing environmental conditions. Moreover, alterations to NPs surfaces through functionalization and coating also play a role in influencing plant tolerance to salinity stress. NPs can influence cellular processes by impacting signal transduction and gene expression. They counteract reactive oxygen species (ROS), regulate the water balance, enhance photosynthesis and nutrient uptake and promote plant growth and yield. The objective of this review is to discuss the positive impacts of diverse NPs on alleviating salinity stress within plants. The intricate mechanisms through which NPs accomplish this mitigation are also discussed. Furthermore, this review addresses existing research gaps, recent breakthroughs, and prospective avenues for utilizing NPs to combat salinity stress.

ZnO based 0-3D diverse nano-architectures, films and coatings for biomedical applications

Thin-film nano-architecting is a promising approach that controls the properties of nanoscale surfaces to increase their interdisciplinary applications in a variety of fields. In this context, zinc oxide (ZnO)-based various nano-architectures (0-3D) such as quantum dots, nanorods/nanotubes, nanothin films, tetrapods, nanoflowers, hollow structures, etc. have been extensively researched by the scientific community in the past decade. Owing to its unique surface charge transport properties, optoelectronic properties and reported biomedical applications, ZnO has been considered as one of the most important futuristic bio-nanomaterials. This review is focused on the design/synthesis and engineering of 0-3D nano-architecture ZnO-based thin films and coatings with tunable characteristics for multifunctional biomedical applications. Although ZnO has been extensively researched, ZnO thin films composed of 0-3D nanoarchitectures with promising thin film device bio-nanotechnology applications have rarely been reviewed. The current review focuses on important details about the technologies used to make ZnO-based thin films, as well as the customization of properties related to bioactivities, characterization, and device fabrication for modern biomedical uses that are relevant. It features biosensing, tissue engineering/wound healing, antibacterial, antiviral, and anticancer activity, as well as biomedical diagnosis and therapy with an emphasis on a better understanding of the mechanisms of action. Eventually, key issues, experimental parameters and factors, open challenges, etc. in thin film device fabrications and applications, and future prospects will be discussed, followed by a summary and conclusion.

Synthesis of strontium oxide-zinc oxide nanocomposites by Co-precipitation method and its application for degradation of malachite green dye under direct sunlight

Photocatalysts workable under direct sunlight are the safe and cost-effective option for water purification. The nanocomposites of strontium oxide and zinc oxide (SZ NCs) were synthesized using coprecipitation method. The respective precursors of SZ NCs were subjected to alkaline hydrolysis and subsequently thermally treated to yield SZ NCs. The SZ NCs with different ZnO composition was synthesized by varying the concentration of ZnO precursor from 0.2 to 1 M. The structural properties of SZ NCs evaluated using X-Ray diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Differential thermal analysis DTA). The optical properties of SZ NCs studied using ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopic study. The trend observed in the intensity of XRD peaks indicated the occurrence of Zn doping in the crystalline lattice of SrO and the formation of SrO-ZnO composite. Upon incorporation of 1 M of ZnO precursor, the grain size of the SrO was decreased from 49.3 to 27.6 nm. The weight loss in the thermal analysis indicates the removal of carbonates from the sample upon heating and shows the formation of an oxide structure. UV-Vis spectra confirmed that the presence of SrO enhanced the sunlight absorption of SZ NCs. The increase in the composition of ZnO precursors increased the bandgap of SrO (2.09 eV) to the level of ZnO (3.14 eV). SZ NCs exhibited heterostructure morphology, where the nanosized domains with varying shapes (layered and rod-like) were observed. Under direct sunlight conditions, SZ NCs prepared using 1 M/0.6 M of SrO/ZnO precursors exhibited 15-20 % higher photocatalytic efficiency than neat SrO and ZnO. In precise, 1 mg of this SZ NC was degraded 98 % of malachite green dye dissolved in water (10 ppm) under direct sunlight. Additionally, the thermal stability results showed that 18 % decomposition was obtained due to the degradation impurities in SrO/ZnO catalysts and the XRD results revealed that no structural change is obtained in SrO/ZnO photocatalysts after stability test. The SZ NCs can be effectively used as safe and economic sunlight photocatalysts for water purification in remote areas without the electricity.

Highly efficient visible light active doped metal oxide photocatalyst and SERS substrate for water treatment

The development of efficient nanomaterials with promising optical and surface properties for multifunctional applications has always been a subject of novel research. In this work, the study of highly efficient TiO₂ nanorods (NRs) and Ta-doped TiO₂ NRs (Ta-TiO₂ NRs) synthesized by alkaline hydrothermal treatment followed by soaking treatment has been reported. NRs were investigated for their potential applications as recyclable/reproducible visible light active photocatalysts and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates in wastewater treatment. NRs were characterized by various microscopic (scanning and transmission electron microscopy), spectroscopic (X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron, UV-visible, photoluminescence, and Raman spectroscopy), and surface (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) techniques. The NRs exhibited promising optical properties with a band gap of 2.95 eV (TiO₂ NRs) and 2.58 eV (Ta-TiO₂ NRs) showing excellent photo-degradation activities for methylene blue (MB) dye molecules under natural sunlight. Particularly, Ta-TiO₂ NRs showed enhanced response as visible light active photocatalysts in normal sunlight and also as SERS substrate attributed to the additional defects introduced by Ta doping. It could be explained by the combined effect of doping-induced enhanced visible light absorption and charge transfer (CT) properties of Ta-TiO₂ NRs. Furthermore, Ta-TiO₂ NRs were investigated for their long-term stability, reproducibility of the data, and recyclability in view of their potential applications in water treatment.
