Abstract
Two nickel alumina catalysts containing 60 wt. % Ni were synthesized by wet impregnation and co-precipitation in order to study the effect of preparation methods on the catalytic efficiency concerning the transformation of sunflower oil into green diesel. The effect of activation temperature on the catalytic efficiency of the most active catalyst was also studied. The catalysts were characterized using various techniques and which were evaluated in the aforementioned reaction using a semi-batch reactor. The catalyst prepared by co-precipitation exhibited a higher specific surface area and smaller mean crystal size of the nickel nanoparticle (higher nickel metallic surface). These justify its higher efficiency with respect to the corresponding catalyst synthesized by wet impregnation. The increase in the activation temperature from 400 to 600 °C increased the size of the nickel nanoparticles through sintering, thus destroying the small pores. These led to a decrease in the nickel surface and specific surface area and, thus, to a decrease in the catalytic efficiency. The optimization of the reaction conditions over the most active catalyst (prepared by co-precipitation and activated at 400 °C) leads to the complete transformation not only of the sunflower oil (edible oil) but also of waste cooking oil (non-edible oil) into green diesel. The liquid produced after the hydrotreatment for these two feedstocks for 7 h, at H2 pressure 40 bar and temperature 350 °C using 100 mL of oil and 1 g of catalyst was composed of 97 and 96 wt. % of green diesel, respectively.

Abstract
Levulinic acid and its esters (e.g., ethyl levulinate, EL) are platform chemicals derived from biomass feedstocks that can be converted to a variety of valuable compounds. Reductive amination of levulinates with primary amines and H2 over heterogeneous catalysts is an attractive method for the synthesis of N-alkyl-5-methyl-2-pyrrolidones, which are an environmentally friendly alternative to the common solvent N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP). In the present work, the catalytic properties of the different nickel phosphide catalysts supported on SiO2 and Al2O3 were studied in a reductive amination of EL with n-hexylamine to N-hexyl-5-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (HMP) in a flow reactor. The influence of the phosphorus precursor, reduction temperature, reactant ratio, and addition of acidic diluters on the catalyst performance was investigated. The Ni2P/SiO2 catalyst prepared using (NH4)2HPO4 and reduced at 600 °C provides the highest HMP yield, which reaches 98%. Although the presence of acid sites and a sufficient hydrogenating ability are important factors determining the pyrrolidone yield, the selectivity also depends on the specific features of EL adsorption on active catalytic sites.

Abstract
Nickel phosphides NixPy are a promising family of binary compounds that have shown much promise in various fields of technology, including energy storage, light absorption and heterogeneous catalysis in the reactions of biomass hydrogenation. The performance of NixPy-containing materials depends greatly on their morphology and phase composition and, in turn, on the synthesis technique. In this work, we have employed the electroplating approach to synthesize a Ni-P coating, which was treated with nitric acid in order to develop its surface area and enrich it with phosphorus. We have employed scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance techniques to characterize the particles separated from the coating with ultrasound for the convenience of the study. According to experimental data, the obtained powder contained a mixture of Ni3P and phosphorus oxides, which transformed into nickel phosphide phases richer with phosphorus, such as Ni5P2 and Ni12P5, after treatment at elevated temperatures. Thus, we have demonstrated that electroplating followed by acid treatment is a feasible approach for the synthesis of Ni-P coatings with increased surface area and variable phase composition.

Abstract
Catalytic properties of physical mixture of MoP/SiO2 catalyst with SiC, γ-Al2O3, SAPO-11 and zeolite β have been compared in hydrodeoxygenation of methyl palmitate (MP). MoP/SiO2 catalyst (11.5 wt% of Mo, Mo/P = 1) was synthesized using TPR method and characterized with N2 physisorption, elemental analysis, H2-TPR, XRD and TEM. Trickle-bed reactor was used for catalytic properties investigation at hydrogen pressure of 3 MPa, and 290 °C. The conversions of MP and overall oxygen-containing compounds have been increased significantly (from 59 to about 100%) when γ-Al2O3 or zeolite materials were used instead of inert SiC. MP can be converted to palmitic acid through acid-catalyzed hydrolysis along with metal-catalyzed hydrogenolysis, and as a consequence the addition of material possessing acid sites to MoP/SiO2 catalyst could lead to acceleration of MP hydrodeoxygenation through acid-catalyzed reactions. Isomerization and cracking of alkane were observed over the physical mixture of MoP/SiO2 with zeolites, but the selectivity of MP conversion trough the HDO reaction route is remained on the high level exceeding 90%.

Abstract
Due to the increasing demands of new and renewable energy sources by utilising plant oils, uncovering the underlying physico-chemical phenomena at the atomic level responsible for the effective deoxygenation plays a vital role in improving the performance of well-known as well as in looking for the possible new catalysts. This study aims at investigating the adsorption and C-O bonds cleavage of methyl butanoate (MB) over MoS2-based catalyst with various loads of Ni promoters by using first-principles density functional theory (DFT). This study employs surface model that never been used by previous researchers for their investigations of adsorption and bonds cleavage on Ni promoted MoS2-based catalysts. The introduction of nickel into MoS2-based catalyst allows the surface charges when interacts with MB to redistribute in such a way that induces stronger Coulombic attractive forces. This in turn could result in a more stable adsorption configuration. However only in certain Ni-loads will results in the most stable adsorption. Nevertheless the most stable adsorption of MB occurs on M-edge configuration which consists of two Ni atoms, i.e. M-2-Ni-A with adsorption energy at about -2.96 eV. As a comparison, the adsorption energy of MoS2 with the absent of Ni, i.e. M-0-Ni is just -2.79 eV. Since there are three C-O bonds in MB, this study proposes three possible reactions for these bonds to cleave. By using CI-NEB method, the activation energies of those three reaction are calculated. It shows that the presence of Ni with appropriate load could promote C-O bond cleavage, especially in one reaction C-O bond is weaken considerably. Further evaluation on bond dissociation energies of the closest C-C bond to the catalyst surface, M-2-Ni-A shows better reactivity on C-C bond cleavage than M-0-Ni, disregarding of those three reaction routes.

Abstract
Two catalysts were prepared using monodisperse pre-synthetized nanoparticles of metallic nickel and nickel phosphides with the same average diameter. Both nanoparticles species were deposited on the same support: mesoporous silica nano-spheres of MCM-41. This support is suitable to inhibit agglomeration and sintering processes during preparation steps. Therefore, two supported and activated catalysts with the same average nanoparticles diameter were obtained. They differ only in the nature of the active species: metallic nickel and nickel phosphides. The effect of the presence of a second element (phosphorus), more electronegative than nickel, on the activity and selectivity in the chemoselective hydrogenation of acetophenone was studied. The reaction conditions were: H2 pressure of 1 MPa, 80 °C using n-heptane as solvent. With the aim to understand the catalytic results, nanoparticles, support and catalysts were carefully characterized by X-ray diffraction, diffuse light scattering, transmission electron microcopy, high resolution transmission electron microcopy, selected area electron diffraction, scanning electron microcopy, Fourier transformer infrared spectroscopy, N2 adsorption at -196 °C, atomic absorption, H2 and CO chemisorption and volumetric oxidation. Considering these results and geometric and electronic characteristics of the surface of both active species, a change in the adsorption intermediate state of acetophenone in presence of phosphorus is proposed to explain the hydrogenation chemoselectivity of nickel phospides.

Abstract
Recently, catalysts based on transition metal phosphides (TMPs) have attracted increasing interest for their use in hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) processes destined to synthesize biofuels (green or renewable diesel) from waste vegetable oils and fats (known as hydrotreated vegetable oils (HVO)), or from bio-oils. This fossil-free diesel product is produced completely from renewable raw materials with exceptional quality. These efficient HDO catalysts present electronic properties similar to noble metals, are cost-efficient, and are more stable and resistant to the presence of water than other classical catalytic formulations used for hydrotreatment reactions based on transition metal sulfides, but they do not require the continuous supply of a sulfide source. TMPs develop a bifunctional character (metallic and acidic) and present tunable catalytic properties related to the metal type, phosphorous-metal ratio, support nature, texture properties, and so on. Here, the recent progress in TMP-based catalysts for HDO of waste oils is reviewed. First, the use of TMPs in catalysis is addressed; then, the general aspects of green diesel (from bio-oils or from waste vegetable oils and fats) production by HDO of nonedible oil compounds are presented; and, finally, we attempt to describe the main advances in the development of catalysts based on TMPs for HDO, with an emphasis on the influence of the nature of active phases and effects of phosphorous, promoters, and preparation methods on reactivity.

Abstract
The effect of support nature, SiO2 and γ-Al2O3, on physicochemical and catalytic properties of nickel phosphide catalysts in methyl palmitate hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) has been considered. Firstly, alumina-supported nickel phosphide catalysts prepared by temperature-programmed reduction method starting from different precursors (phosphate–Ni(NO3)2 and (NH4)2HPO4 or phosphite–Ni(OH)2 and H3PO3) were compared using elemental analysis, N2 physisorption, H2-TPR, XRD, TEM, NH3-TPD, 27Al and 31P MAS NMR techniques and catalytic experiments. The mixture of nickel phosphide phases was produced from phosphate precursor on alumina while using of phosphite precursor provides Ni2P formation with the higher activity in methyl palmitate HDO. Besides, the comparative study of the performances of Ni2P/SiO2 and Ni2P/Al2O3 catalysts demonstrates the apparent superiority of alumina-supported Ni2P in the methyl palmitate hydrodeoxygenation. Considering the tentative scheme of methyl palmitate transformation, we proposed that cooperation of Ni2P and acid sites on the surface of alumina provides the enhanced activity of alumina-supported Ni2P through the acceleration of acid-catalysed hydrolysis.
