Cyclohexane oxidation using advanced oxidation processes with metals and metal oxides as catalysts: a review

Selective oxidation of cyclohexane has gained substantial interest in the field of research due to the prominence of its products in industrial processes. Particularly, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) constitute a positive technology for the oxidation of cyclohexane owing to their high oxidation potentials and environmental benign properties. This review entails to address the progress made in advanced oxidation of cyclohexane over nanostructured metals and metal oxides catalysts. The main focus is directed toward the photocatalysis, Fenton oxidation and ozonation as advanced oxidation processes. Mainly, the fundamental principles, prime factors of the AOPs in conjunction with metal and metal oxide catalysts and the mechanistic insight toward the oxidation of cyclohexane are highlighted. The affirmative effects of the metals and metal oxide catalysts mainly focusing on particle size, structure and elemental composition is stressed. Lastly, the advantages and disadvantages of the AOPs and the strategic approaches to counter the disadvantages are also clearly elucidated.

Aerobic Partial Oxidation of Alkanes Using Photodriven Iron Catalysis

Photodriven oxidations of alkanes in trifluoroacetic acid using commercial and synthesized Fe(III) sources as catalyst precursors and dioxygen (O₂) as the terminal oxidant are reported. The reactions produce alkyl esters and occur at ambient temperature in the presence of air, and catalytic turnover is observed for the oxidation of methane in a pure O₂ atmosphere. Under optimized conditions, approximately 17% conversion of methane to methyl trifluoroacetate at more than 50% selectivity is observed. It is demonstrated that methyl trifluoroacetate is stable under catalytic conditions, and thus overoxidized products are not formed through secondary oxidation of methyl trifluoroacetate.

Organic-inorganic interactions revealed by Raman spectroscopy during reversible phase transitions in semiconducting [(C2H5)4N]FeCl4

The alkylammonium halogenoferrate families are subjected to diverse studies according to their wide field application. However, these compounds show various transitions depending on the preparation process. In this paper, the [(C₂H₅)₄N]FeCl₄ compound was successfully synthesized using a slow evaporation solution growth method at room temperature. An optical absorption measurement confirms the semiconductor nature with a band gap around 2.95 eV. The X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) data confirmed the formation of a single-phase with hexagonal-type structure. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) indicated that the [(C₂H₅)₄N]FeCl₄ compound undergoes eight reversible phase transitions between 193 and 443 K. At high temperature (T > 423 K) the plastic nature of the crystals was confirmed. Temperature-controlled X-ray diffraction reveals that the thermal expansion of the crystal structure is non homothetic in the (a,b) plane and along the c axis. The temperature dependence of the Raman spectra up to 443 K revealed specific reorientations and molecular displacements of the organic and inorganic components associated with the phase transitions. We aim to thermally stabilize the [(C₂H₅)₄N]FeCl₄ compound which has a band gap suitable for photocatalytic processes.
