Recent Overview of Potent Antioxidant Activity of Coordination Compounds

During recent decades, the complexation of organic ligands toward several metal ions of s-p and d-block has been applied as a plan to enhance its antioxidant performance. Due to their wide range of beneficial impacts, coordination compounds are widely used in industries, specifically in the medicinal and pharmaceutical fields. The activity is generally improved by chelation consequently knowing that the characteristics of both ligands and metals can lead to the development of greatly active compounds. Chelation compounds are a substitute for using the traditional synthetic antioxidants, because metal chelates present benefits, including a variety in geometry, oxidation states, and coordination number, that assist and favor the redox methods associated with antioxidant action. As well as understanding the best studied anti-oxidative assets of these compounds, coordination compounds are involved in the free radical scavenging process and protecting human organisms from the opposing effects of these radicals. The antioxidant ability can be assessed by various interrelated systems. The methodological modification offers the most knowledge on the antioxidant property of metal chelates. Colorimetric techniques are the most used, though electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) is an alternative for metallic compounds, since color does not affect the results. Information about systems, with their benefits, and restrictions, permits a dependable valuation of the antioxidant performance of coordination compounds, as well as assisting application in various states wherever antioxidant drugs are required, such as in food protection, appropriate good-packaged foods, dietary supplements, and others. Because of the new exhaustive analysis of organic ligands, it has become a separate field of research in chemistry. The present investigation will be respected for providing a foundation for the antioxidant properties of organic ligands, future tests on organic ligands, and building high-quality antioxidative compounds.

Design, Synthesis, Spectroscopic Inspection, DFT and Molecular Docking Study of Metal Chelates Incorporating Azo Dye Ligand for Biological Evaluation

A new heterocyclic azo dye ligand (L) was synthesized by the combination of 4-amino antipyrine with 4-aminophenol. The new Cr(III), Mn(II), Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), and Cd(II) complexes were synthesized in excellent yields. The metal chelate structures were elucidated using elemental analyses, FT-IR, ¹H-NMR, mass, magnetic moment, diffused reflectance spectral and thermal analysis (TG-DTG), and molar conductivity measurement. According to the FT-IR study, the azo dye ligand exhibited neutral tri-dentate behavior, binding to the metal ions with the azo N, carbonyl O, and protonated phenolic OH. The ¹H-NMR spectral study of the Zn(II) complex supported the coordination of the zo dye ligand without proton displacement of the phenolic OH. Diffused reflectance and magnetic moment studies revealed the octahedral geometry of the complexes, as well as their good electrolytic nature, excepting the Zn(II) and Cd(II) complexes, which were nonelectrolytes, as deduced from the molar conductivity study. The theoretical calculations of optimized HOMO-LUMO energies, geometrical parameters, electronic spectra, natural atomic charges, 3D-plots of MEP, and vibrational wavenumbers were computed and elucidated using LANL2DZ and 6-311G (d, p) basis sets of density functional theory (DFT) with the approach of B3LYP DFT and TD-DFT methods. The ligand and complexes have been assayed for their antimicrobial activity and compared with the standard drugs. Most of the complexes have manifested excellent antimicrobial activity against various microbial strains. A molecular docking investigation was also performed, to acquire more information about the binding mode and energy of the ligand and its metal complexes to the Escherichia coli receptor using molecular docking. Altogether, the newly created ligand and complexes showed positive antibacterial effects and are worth future study.

Development of New Azomethine Metal Chelates Derived from Isatin: DFT and Pharmaceutical Studies

Through the condensation of isatin (indoline-2, 3-dione) and aniline in a 1:1 ratio, a Schiff base ligand was synthesized and characterized via (¹H-NMR, mass, IR, UV-Vis) spectra. Elemental analyses, spectroscopy (¹H-NMR, mass, UV-Vis), magnetic susceptibility, molar conductivity, mass spectra, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and thermal analysis have all been used to characterize a series of Cr(III), Mn(II), Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), and Cd(II) metal complexes derived from the titled ligand. The metal-to-ligand ratio is 1:1, according to the analytical data. The Schiff base ligand displayed bidentate behavior with NO coordination sites when it bonded to metal ions, as seen by the IR spectra. The magnetic moment measurement and UV-Vis spectral investigation showed the octahedral geometry of the Cr(III), Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II), and Zn(II) complexes, whereas they suggested the tetrahedral geometry of the Mn(II), Cu(II), and Cd(II) complexes. The thermal analysis study confirmed the presence of both hydrated and coordinated water molecules in all the compounds, except for the Mn(II) complex, and showed that the complexes decomposed in three or five decomposition steps leaving the corresponding metal oxide as a residue. The ligand and its metal complexes' antibacterial efficacy were evaluated. The findings showed that the metal complexes had stronger antibacterial properties than the ligand alone. The ligand and its metal complexes' anticancer properties were also investigated. A DFT investigation is also reported to gather information regarding the electronic features of the ligand and its metal complexes. Finally, drug-likeness and ADME characteristics were also calculated as parameters.

Innovation of Imine Metal Chelates as Corrosion Inhibitors at Different Media: A Collective Study

The corrosion inhibition of transition metal chelates derived from Schiff base ligands was tested for (mild, copper, stainless, aluminum and carbon) steel in various concentrations of (HCl, HNO₃ and H₂SO₄) acidic medium at 25 °C through (weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization, polarization curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and open circuit potential measurements (OCP)) techniques. The studied compounds were identified with various spectral, analytical and physico-chemical techniques. It was observed that the investigated compounds had a significant inhibitory impact on the corrosion of diverse steels in the medium investigated. The analysis shows that increasing the dose of the studied complexes improves the corresponding inhibitory efficiency values. Negative results of Gibb’s free adsorption energy (ΔGads0) prove the suppression process’s spontaneous and physical adsorption, which contradicts the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. As a result of this insight, a novel bridge between nuclearity driven coordinated inorganic chemistry and materials, as well as corrosion control, has been built. This review provides an overview of the use of Schiff bases and associated transition metals as potential corrosion inhibitors, including the factors that influence their application.

Synthesis, Spectroscopic, Structural and Molecular Docking Studies of Some New Nano-Sized Ferrocene-Based Imine Chelates as Antimicrobial and Anticancer Agents

The newly synthesized organometallic acetyl ferrocene imine ligand (HL) was obtained by the direct combination of 2-acetyl ferrocene with 2-aminothiophenol. The electronic and molecular structure of acetyl ferrocene imine ligand (HL) was refined theoretically and the chemical quantum factors were computed. Complexes of the acetyl ferrocene imine ligand with metal(II)/(III) ions (Cr(III), Mn(II), Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II)) were fabricated. They were inspected by thermal (DTG/TG), spectroscopic techniques (FT-IR, 1H NMR, mass, UV-Vis), molar conductivity, and CHNClM to explicate their structures. Studies using scanning electron microscope (SEM) were conducted on the free acetyl ferrocene imine ligand and its Cd(II) chelate to confirm their nano-structure. To collect an idea about the effect of metal ions on anti-pathogenic properties upon chelation, the newly synthesized acetyl ferrocene imine ligand and some of its metal chelates were tested against a variety of microorganisms, including Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhimurium, Escherichia coli, Aspergillus fumigatus, and Candida albicans. The ligand and its metal chelate were tested for cytotoxic activity in human cancer (MCF-7 cell viability) and human melanocyte cell line HBF4. It was discovered that the Cd(II) chelate had the lowest IC50 of the three and thus had the prior activity. Molecular docking was utilized to investigate the interaction of acetyl ferrocene imine ligand (HL) with the receptors of the vascular endothelial growth factor receptor VEGFR (PDB ID: 1Y6a), human Topo IIA-bound G-segment DNA crystal structure (PDB ID: 2RGR), and Escherichia coli crystal structure (PDB ID: 3T88).

Fabrication, DFT Calculation, and Molecular Docking of Two Fe(III) Imine Chelates as Anti-COVID-19 and Pharmaceutical Drug Candidate

Two tetradentate dibasic chelating Schiff base iron (III) chelates were prepared from the reaction of 2,2′-((1E,1′E)-(1,2-phenylenebis(azanylylidene))bis(methanylylidene))bis(4-bromophenol) (PDBS) and 2,2′-((1E,1′E)-((4-chloro-1,2-phenylene)bis(azanylylidene))-bis(methanylylidene))bis(4-bromophenol) (CPBS) with Fe³⁺ ions. The prepared complexes were fully characterized with spectral and physicochemical tools such as IR, NMR, CHN analysis, TGA, UV-visible spectra, and magnetic moment measurements. Moreover, geometry optimizations for the synthesized ligands and complexes were conducted using the Gaussian09 program through the DFT approach, to find the best structures and key parameters. The prepared compounds were tested as antimicrobial agents against selected strains of bacteria and fungi. The results suggests that the CPBSFe complex has the highest activity, which is close to the reference. An MTT assay was used to screen the newly synthesized compounds against a variety of cell lines, including colon cancer cells, hepatic cellular carcinoma cells, and breast carcinoma cells. The results are expressed by IC50 value, in which the 48 µg/mL value of the CPBSFe complex indicates its success as a potential anticancer agent. The antioxidant behavior of the two imine chelates was studied by DPPH assay. All the tested imine complexes show potent antioxidant activity compared to the standard Vitamin C. Furthermore, the in vitro assay and the mechanism of binding and interaction efficiency of the tested samples with the receptor of COVID-19 core protease viral protein (PDB ID: 6lu7) and the receptor of Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, PDB ID: 1fj4) were investigated using molecular docking experiments.

Compatibility between Activity and Selectivity in Catalytic Oxidation of Benzyl Alcohol with Au-Pd Nanoparticles through Redox Switching of SnOx

A balance between catalytic activity and product selectivity remains a dilemma for the partial oxidation processes because the products are prone to be overoxidized. In this work, we report on the partial oxidation of benzyl alcohol using a modified catalyst consisting of nanosized Au-Pd particles (NPs) with tin oxide (SnO_x) deposited on a mesoporous silica support. We found that the SnO_x promotes the autogenous reduction of PdO to active Pd⁰ species on the Au-Pd NP catalyst (SnO_x@AP-ox) before H₂ reduction, which is due to the high oxophilicity of Sn. The presence of active Pd⁰ species and the enhancement of oxygen transfer by SnO_x led to high catalytic activity. The benzaldehyde selectivity was enhanced with the increase of SnO_x content on catalyst SnO_x@AP-ox, which is ascribed to the modulated affinity of reactants and products on the catalyst surface through the redox switching of Sn species. After H₂ reduction, SnO_x was partially reduced and Au-Pd-Sn alloy was formed. The formation of Au-Pd-Sn alloy weakened both the catalytic synergy of Au-Pd alloy NPs and the adsorption of benzyl alcohol on the reduced catalyst, thus leading to low catalytic activity.

Temperature and salt effects of the kinetic reactions of substituted 2-pyridylmethylene-8-quinolyl iron (II) complexes as antimicrobial, anti-cancer, and antioxidant agents with cyanide ions

Kinetics of substitution reaction of three high-spin pyridylmethylene-8-quinolyl iron (II) complexes by CN– ions were studied spectrophotometrically in various ratios of aqueous–methanol binary mixtures at 298 ± 0.2 K. Kinetics of the substitution reaction follow the rate law (k2[CN−][complex]) on applying of the conditions of the pseudo first order reaction. Reactivity of the reaction was investigated in terms of ligand moiety and solvent effects. The rate of the reaction increased as the co-solvent methanol ratio increased. This reactivity trend is predominantly due to increases in the activity coefficient of those hydrophobic complexes in the organic methanol co-solvent, depending upon the hydrophobicity of the substituent groups (R) in the coordinated ligand in the complexes. Reactivity trends of the prepared complexes in the presence of the inserted hydrophobic salts such as tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB), tetraethylammonium bromide (TEAB), and tetramethylammonium bromide (TMAB) or hydrophilic salt potassium bromide (KBr) were studied. The observed decrease in the rate constants with increasing salt concentration was due to the cationic character of the reacting complexes. In addition, the synthesized compounds were tested for antimicrobial activity against selected strains of microbes. The results showed that the order of reactivity of the investigated complexes against the selected microbes were as follows: ppaqFe > paaqFe > pmaqFe. In addition, the investigated ligands and their Fe(II) complexes were screened for anticancer activities against several cell lines of cancer. The ppaqFe complex showed the best cytotoxic efficiency against the selected cancer lines (IC50 = 8.75–21.50 µg/µl), whereas the pmaq ligand showed the lowest cytotoxic efficiency (IC50 = 58.25– 72.40). Furthermore, the antioxidant potential of the presented compounds was studied by applying DPPH assays and showed a potential activity compared with standard vitamin C. The excellent antimicrobial and anticancer activities of the investigated Fe(II) chelates compared with literature values are promising and deserve further study.

Antibacterial potency, cell viability and morphological implications of copper oxide nanoparticles encapsulated into cellulose acetate nanofibrous scaffolds

It is generally believed that the most challenging impediment for the utilization of cellulose acetate (CA) in the medical field is its hydrophobicity and disability to poison the harmful microbes. Therefore, in this contribution, we aimed to prepare an environmentally scaffold-based CA loaded with copper nanoparticles (CuONPs), which are expected to not only improve the hydrophilicity of the prepared nanofibers, but also have an effective ability to kill such harmful and infectious microbes that are abundant in wounds. The obtained results attested that the generated nanofibers became thicker with increasing the content of CuONPs in CA nanofibers. The roughness average increased from 143.2 to 157.1 nm, whereas the maximum height of the roughness (Rt) increased from 400.8 to 479.9 nm as going from the lowest to the highest content of CuONPs. Additionally, the contact angle of the prepared nanofibers decreased from 105.3° (CA alone) to 85.4° for CuONPs@CA. Significantly, biological studies revealed that cell viability and anti-bacterial potency were improved upon incorporating CuONPs into CA solution. Correspondingly, their inhibition zones reached 18 ± 3 mm, and 16 ± 2 mm for nanofibrous scaffolds having 12.0CuO@CA, besides raising the cell viability from 91.3 ± 4% to 96.4 ± 4% for 0.0CuO@CA, and 12.0CuO@CA, respectively, thereby implying that the fabricated CuONPs@CA nanocomposite has biocompatibility towards fibroblast cells. Thus, introducing biological activity into CA nanofibers via loading with CuONPs makes it suitable for numerous biomedical applications, particularly as an environmentally benign wound dressing fibers.

Titanium (IV) complexes of some tetra-dentate symmetrical bis-Schiff bases of 1,6-hexanediamine: Synthesis, characterization, and in silico prediction of potential inhibitor against coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2)

Symmetrical bis‐Schiff bases (LH₂) have been synthesized by the condensation of 1,6‐hexanediamine (hn) and carbonyl or dicarbonyl. One of the synthesized Schiff bases has been subjected to the molecular docking for the prediction of their potentiality against coronavirus (SARS‐CoV‐2). Molecular docking revealed that tested Schiff base possessed high binding affinity with the receptor protein of SARS CoV‐2 compared with hydroxychloroquine (HCQ). The ADMET analysis showed that ligand is non‐carcinogenic and less toxic than standard HCQ. Schiff bases acting as dibasic tetra‐dentate ligands formed titanium (IV) complexes of the type [TiL(H₂O)₂Cl₂] or [TiL(H₂O)₂]Cl₂ being coordinated through ONNO donor atoms. Ligands and complexes were characterized by the elemental analysis and physicochemical and spectroscopic data including FTIR, ¹H NMR, mass spectra, UV‐Visible spectra, molar conductance, and magnetic measurement. Optimized structures obtained from quantum chemical calculations supported the formation of complexes. Antibacterial, antifungal, and anti‐oxidant activity assessments have been studied for synthesized ligands and complexes.

Synthesis, crystal structure, photoluminescence and catalytic properties of a novel cuprous complex with 2,3-pyrazinedicarboxylic acid ligands

A copper (I) polymer, [Cu2Mg(pzdc)2(H2O)5•2H2O]n (pzdc = 2,3-Pyrazinedicarboxylic acid), was synthesized by solvothermal method. The complex was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry (UV-Vis), and element analysis. X-ray crystal structure analysis reveals that the complex is a two-dimensional coordination polymer. The photophysical and luminescent properties of the complex were investigated. At room temperature, the complex exhibits reversible double strands cyclic voltammogram and displays efficient blue emission with peak maxima at 468 nm. Catalytic liquid phase oxidation of dyes and glyphosate was carried out using the copper (I) polymer as catalyst and H2O2 as oxidant. Degradation efficiencies were evaluated by varying the reaction conditions (i.e. illumination and oxidant). In the degradation reactions, the polymer exhibits high degradation efficiency within a short reaction time under the optimum reaction conditions. Furthermore, the reusability of the catalyst is excellent, showing no activity loss in four repeated cycles. The possible reaction mechanism catalyzed by the polymer was inferred on the basis of the results of electron spin resonance (ESR), electrochemical and ion chromatography analyses (IC).

Oxidized Palladium Supported on Ceria Nanorods for Catalytic Aerobic Oxidation of Benzyl Alcohol to Benzaldehyde in Protic Solvents

In the present study, the catalytic activity of palladium oxide (PdOx) supported on ceria nanorods (CeO2-NR) for aerobic selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol (BnOH) to benzaldehyde (PhCHO) was evaluated. The CeO2-NR was synthesized hydrothermally and the Pd(NO3)2 was deposited by a wet impregnation method, followed by calcination to acquire PdOx/CeO2-NR. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature programmed reduction (TPR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Brunauer–Emmet–Teller (BET) surface area analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In addition, the TPR-reduced PdOx/CeO2-NR (PdOx/CeO2-NR-Red) was studied by XRD, BET, and XPS. Characterizations showed the formation of CeO2-NR with (111) exposed plane and relatively high BET surface area. PdOx (x > 1) was detected to be the major oxide species on the PdOx/CeO2-NR. The activities of the catalysts in BnOH oxidation were evaluated using air, as an environmentally friendly oxidant, and various solvents. Effects of temperature, solvent nature and palladium oxidation state were investigated. The PdOx/CeO2-NR showed remarkable activity when protic solvents were utilized. The best result was achieved using PdOx/CeO2-NR and boiling ethanol as solvent, leading to 93% BnOH conversion and 96% selectivity toward PhCHO. A mechanistic hypothesis for BnOH oxidation with PdOx/CeO2-NR in ethanol is presented.
