Role of natural resources, renewable energy sources, eco-innovation and carbon taxes in carbon neutrality: Evidence from G7 economies

Global warming has created problems for human life, and it has been increasing for a few years. All the developing and developed countries are establishing policies to attain zero carbon status. This study extends the ongoing debate on carbon emissions. It examines the effect of natural resources and RE (Biofuel and other renewable sources) on greenhouse gas (CO2 emission and PM2.5) emissions while using data over 22 years (1999-2021) from G7 countries. In addition, this study has investigated the effect of carbon taxes, financial development, and environmental policies on carbon neutrality. The cross-sectional-ARDL, the Common correlated effect means group (CCEMG), and the Augmented mean group (AMG) cutting-edge model have been employed. Quantile regression has been employed for robustness. The study results demonstrate that biofuel and other renewable energy (RE) sources, carbon taxes, environmental policy, and eco-innovation decrease greenhouse gas emissions (CO2 emissions). Meanwhile, financial development, and natural resource dependence positively impact carbon neutrality. The robustness result also verifies the findings from CS-ARDL, AMG, and CCEMG methods. The empirical findings are used to infer policy implications for G7 economies.

Financial globalization and economic growth amid geopolitical risk: A study on China-Russia far East federal district

Geopolitics, natural resource efficiency and financial globalization have arisen as a new concept for low CO2 to achieve sustainable economic growth (EG). Therefore, developed and developing economies focus on Geopolitics risk (GPR), natural resource (NRS) efficiency and financial globalization (FG) to cope with CO2 neutrality targets. In order to understand the elements that contribute to achieving CO2 neutrality, this study sought to establish a relevant connection between geopolitics, the efficiency of NRS, financial globalization (FNG), and economic growth. For the abovementioned objectives, modern econometric methods, such as the canonical cointegration, CS-FGLS and GMM were adopted to evaluate the China-Russia Far East dataset between 1990 and 2022. In order to achieve CO2 neutrality in the long run, the study's elements are crucial, according to the results. In addition, GMM shows that each of the parameters affects CO2 neutrality. As a result, the ecological Kuznets curve rules the economic landscape, and long-term CO2 neutrality is greatly facilitated by geopolitics, efficient use of natural resources, financial globalization, and economic growth. Consequently, numerous domains necessitate far-reaching and revolutionary policy changes, such as economic integration to mitigate geopolitical risk, effective management of natural resources, efficient financial systems, and sustainable technology.

Impacts of renewable and disaggregated non-renewable energy consumption on CO2 emissions in GCC countries: A STIRPAT model analysis

This research investigates the effects of renewable (REC) and disaggregated non-renewable energy consumption (coal, oil, and natural gas) on CO2 emissions (CO2) in GCC countries, employing the STIRPAT model. The research also compares the impact of various non-renewable energy (NREC) sources to identify their contributions to CO2 emissions. Demographic factors like population and economic growth are considered main determinants of CO2. Panel data econometric methods are used, including diagnostic tests and unit root tests, to found long-run relationships among the variables. The study reveals significant positive associations between coal, natural gas, oil consumption and CO2, with oil having the highest impact. Conversely, REC shows a significant negative correlation with CO2. Economic growth and population are also linked to increased CO2. The findings emphasize the need for strategies promoting renewable energy usage, energy efficiency, public transportation, carbon pricing, and research in green technologies to alleviate CO2 and enhance sustainable development in the GCC countries.

The role of China's carbon emission trading system in economic decarbonization: Evidence from Chinese prefecture-level cities

Based on the panel data from 283 prefecture-level cities in China between 2009 and 2019, this study examines the impact of China's carbon emissions trading system on reducing carbon emissions and its mechanisms, using the PSM-DID method. The findings demonstrate that the carbon emissions trading system can effectively decrease the total carbon emissions in pilot cities in China, and has a positive spatial spillover effect on neighboring cities of the pilot areas. The carbon emission trading system primarily reduces carbon emission by incentivizing businesses to implement eco-friendly practices and improve the industrial structure of pilot cities. Increased financial marketisation can promote the carbon emission reduction effects of the trading system. The impact of the carbon emission trading system on old industrial base cities and inland cities is more significant than those on non-old industrial base cities and coastal cities.

Building ecological civilization: the importance of promoting green investments by Chinese companies

The study investigated "Building Ecological Civilization: the Importance of Promoting Green Investments by Chinese Companies" to examine the complex connections between the factors affecting Chinese businesses' ecological performance (EP). An autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model is used in the study to analyze the impact of green investments (GI), the policy environment (PE), government support (GS), public awareness and perception (PAP), and technological capability (TC) on companies' earnings per share (EPS). The results show a strong correlation between GI and EP, indicating that businesses' growing use of green initiatives is essential for raising environmental sustainability. The study also shows that PE, TC, and EP have an inverse relationship, indicating the need for more supportive governmental policies and regulations and the effective adoption and implementation of green technologies. The interaction of GS and PAP significantly reduces the ecological impact of green investments, highlighting the significance of citizen involvement and the role of government in advancing ecological civilization. The findings also demonstrated that green investments, policy environments, public perception, and technology influence the ecological performance of businesses. They also demonstrate statistical robustness with low p-values. This information is essential for developing policies that support an ecological civilization, which is necessary for China and globally in light of the current climate crisis.

A game-theoretic approach to designing carbon regulations in a duopoly freight transportation market: Road and multimodal road-rail competitive systems

Since the transportation industry produces remarkable carbon emissions worldwide, governments aim to curb these emissions by implementing different carbon regulations. However, little is known regarding how the heterogeneity of transportation systems should be exploited to design carbon regulations. To fill this research gap, the present article formulates carbon cap-and-trade and carbon offset regulations to reduce total carbon emissions produced by road and multimodal road-rail freight transportation systems (FTSs) in a duopoly market; the latter is regarded as a green, energy-efficient transportation mode. A novel procedure is suggested to allocate initial carbon caps that is a hybrid of both benchmark and grandfathering methods. The procedure allows the government to exploit the energy efficiency of the multimodal system, when targeting a reduction of total carbon. Then, a game-theoretic approach is adopted to implement the mentioned carbon regulations. A government, as a Stackelberg leader, maximizes a social welfare function containing economic, social, and environmental dimensions. Under the cap-and-trade regulation, a Nash bargaining process is proposed to trade carbon permits between the FTSs, as the followers, for updating their initial caps. The equilibrium outputs of the two mentioned carbon regulations and a carbon tax regulation are compared. The findings based on an experimental analysis suggest that the cap-and-trade (carbon offset) is the optimal and energy-efficient regulation from the social (economic or environmental) perspective. In terms of policy implications, our findings indicate that the development of a marketplace infrastructure for trading carbon permits is not justifiable under the economic and environmental perspectives of the government.

Examining the trade-offs in clean energy provision: Focusing on the relationship between technology transfer, renewable energy, industrial growth, and carbon footprint reduction

Sustainable energy mitigates climate change by reducing reliance on coal and oil for power generation, curbing global warming. It addresses environmental concerns and yields economic benefits-reduced fossil fuel dependence, financial inclusion, productive employment, and economic development. This research examines the impact of regional economic integration on environmental sustainability in 39 high-income European and Central Asian (ECA) nations from 2017 to 2021. Specifically, the study analyzes the influence of green energy demand, technological transfers, and trade openness on carbon emissions. The study employed various estimators, namely, a two-step Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) estimation, quantile regression, and the cointegration panel approach. These estimators were utilized to capture different aspects and dynamics of the research variables. The study finds that regional green programs and trade agreements effectively reduce carbon emissions, while technological advances and industrial output tend to raise them. Granger causality analyses reveal that emissions-led regional development, technical innovation, and trade openness are interconnected factors, and the deployment of renewable energy contributes to carbon emissions. The inter-temporal analysis suggests that regional economic integration factors will likely impact carbon emissions in the following decade. These findings support neoclassical growth theory, new institutional economics, and ecological modernization theory. Developing renewable energy sources in the region can minimize energy price fluctuations, strengthen energy security, and align with the carbon neutrality agenda. This research emphasizes the need for sustainable energy strategies and regional cooperation to foster a greener and more sustainable future.

Assessing China's development zones and carbon emissions

The present article evaluates establishment of development zones and its association with carbon emissions. In the process of industrialization, carbon emissions in underdeveloped regions of the world increase with economic growth. In order to promote economic growth in the western region and strengthen the management of enterprise pollution emissions, the Chinese government has set up hundreds of development zones. Existing research shows that development zone establishment can promote economic growth; however, literature is scarce when the relationship is tested across region. Based on the panel data of five provinces with relatively backward economy in western China from 2001 to 2017, this paper constructs a "multi-period difference-in-difference" (DID) model with the establishment of development zones as a "quasi-natural experiment" to test the relationship. Findings reveal that development zone establishment increases carbon emissions in the region, and has a significant inhibitory effect on carbon emissions at national level. The conclusions of this paper provide empirical evidence and policy implications for reducing carbon emissions in economically underdeveloped areas.

The moderating role of CEO power on the relationship between environmental, social and governance disclosure and financial performance in emerging market

The study proposes to examine how environmental, social and governance disclosure (ESG) affect the financial performance (FP) of Indian firms. Furthermore, it aims to evaluate the moderation impact of CEO power (CEOP) on the association between ESG on the FP. The study's target population is all firms indexed in NIFTY 100, representing the top one hundred firms by market capitalisation from 2017 to 2021. Data relating to ESG were collected and built based on the available data on Refinitiv Eikon Database. Results reveal that EDI positively and significantly impacts the ROE and TQ of Indian firms. Furthermore, SDI and GDI negatively and significantly affect the ROE and TQ of Indian firms. Moreover, ESG and CEOP have a significant impact on ROE. Nevertheless, ESG has a negative but highly significant impact on ROE, whilst it has a negative and low considerable impact on the TQ of Indian firms. Nonetheless, CEOP does not moderate the association between ESG and FP measured by ROE and TQ. This research contributes to the existing literature by introducing a moderator variable that has not been used in the Indian context; CEO power, which provides stakeholders and regulators with useful findings that would encourage firms to create an ESG committee to enhance ESG disclosure to compete on the world market and reach the United Nations (UN) Sustainable goal 2030. Furthermore, this paper provides insightful recommendations for creating an ESG legal framework for decision-makers.

Are clean energy technologies a panacea for environmental sustainability in sub-Saharan African countries?

The average population in sub-Saharan Africa that has access to clean fuel for cooking and technology is 23.6%. This study examines the panel data for 29 sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries for the period 2000-2018 to estimate impacts of clean energy technologies on environmental sustainability measured by load capacity factor (LCF) to capture both nature's supply and man's demand for the environment. The study used generalized quantile regression, which is more robust to outliers and eliminates the endogeneity of variables in the model using lagged instruments. Results show that clean energy technologies (clean fuels for cooking and renewable energy) have positive and statistically significant impacts on environmental sustainability in SSA for almost all quantiles. For robustness checks, we used Bayesian panel regression estimates and the results remained unchanged. The overall results suggest that clean energy technologies improve environmental sustainability in SSA. The result shows a U-shaped relationship between environmental quality and income and confirms the Load Capacity Curve (LCC) hypothesis in SSA, which implies that income first worsens environmental sustainability and then, after exceeding certain quantiles, improves environmental sustainability. On the other hand, the results also confirm the environmental Kuznet curve (EKC) hypothesis in SSA. The findings show the importance of using clean fuels for cooking, trade, and renewable energy consumption in improving environmental sustainability in the region. The policy implication is that governments in SSA should reduce the cost of energy services (i.e., renewable energy and clean fuels for cooking) to achieve greater environmental sustainability in the region.

Can environmental taxes and green-energy offer carbon-free E7 economies? An empirical analysis in the framework of COP-26

The main cause of environmental degradation is carbon emissions, which puts environmental sustainability in jeopardy. This ecological worry, the obligation for which falls on all economic actors, has not gone undetected, and so in 2021, the Glasgow Climate Pact (COP: 26) was organized, with the primary aim of decreasing global carbon emissions. Because the Post-Glasgow Agreement goals represent a significant challenge to achieving ecological responsibility, pressure is applied to the participating nations. However, earlier literature lacked sufficient investigation of factors useful for the mitigation of carbon emissions in E7 (China, Turkey, India, Russia, Brazil, Indonesia, and Mexico) economies. Hence, we aim to fill this research vacuum by predicting the impact of clean fuels and cooking technology availability, renewable energy, and environmental taxes on E7 economies' carbon emissions from 2000 to 2020, while taking urbanization and population expansion into account. Evaluation is done using four different cross-sectional dependence (CSD) methods, as well as unit root tests (CIPS and CADF), cointegration analysis (Westerlund and Kao), and the Driscoll-Kraay and quantile-on-quantile long-run factor estimate methods. The long-run analysis revealed from our findings that environmental tax, renewable energy, and access to clean fuels and technologies for cooking decrease carbon emission for the E7 economies. On the other hand, urbanization and population growth enhance emissions for the E7 economies. Finally, our results hold up under a variety of policy interpretations that would aid in reducing carbon emissions and their negative effects on the environment.

Economic growth and carbon emissions in Pakistan: the effects of China's Logistics Industry

The logistics business is a crucial contributor to economic development, yet it is also the leading source of carbon emissions. Economic growth at the expense of environmental deterioration is a challenging issue; this phenomenon offered a new avenue for scholars and policymakers to investigate and address these issues. The recent study is one of the attempts to explore this intricate subject. The goal of this research is to determine whether or not the Chinese logistics sector has an impact on Pakistan's GDP and carbon emissions as a result of CPEC. The research utilized data from 2007Q1 to 2021Q4 using the ARDL approach for an empirical estimate. Due to the mixed order of variable integration and finite data set, the ARDL technique is well deserved, which helps reach sound policy inferences. The study's key results indicated that China's logistic business enhances Pakistan's economic development and carbon emissions in the short and long term. Similarly, China's energy usage, technology, and transportation contribute to Pakistan's economic progress at the price of environmental damage. The empirical study may be a model for other developing nations, given Pakistan's viewpoint. With the support of the empirical results, policymakers in Pakistan and other associated countries would be able to plan for sustainable growth in conjunction with CPEC.
