In Vitro Corrosion of Titanium Nitride and Oxynitride-Based Biocompatible Coatings Deposited on Stainless Steel

Electrospun Poly-L-Lactic Acid Scaffolds Surface-Modified via Reactive Magnetron Sputtering Using Different Mixing Ratios of Nitrogen and Xenon

Controlled regeneration processes involving tissue growth using the surface and structure of scaffolds, are actively used in tissue engineering. Reactive magnetron sputtering is a versatile surface modification method of both metal and polymer substrates, as the properties of the formed coatings can be modified in a wide range by changing the process parameters. In magnetron sputtering, the working gas and its composition have an influence on the chemical composition and physical characteristics of the obtained coatings. However, there are no studies addressing the influence of the nitrogen/xenon gas mixture ratio in direct current magnetron sputtering on the deposition rate, physicochemical and in vitro properties of surface-modified biocompatible poly-L-lactic acid scaffolds. In this study, the application of mixtures of nitrogen and xenon in various ratios is demonstrated to modify the surface of non-woven poly-L-lactic acid scaffolds by direct current magnetron sputtering of a titanium target. It has been found that the magnetron sputtering parameters chosen do not negatively influence the morphology of the prepared scaffolds, but increase the hydrophilicity. Moreover, quantitative spectroscopic analysis results indicate that the formed coatings are primarily composed of titanium oxide and titanium oxynitride compounds and is dependent on the gas mixture ratio only to a certain extent. Atomic force microscopy investigations of the roughness of the fibers of the electrospun scaffolds and the thickness of the coatings formed on them show that the considerable variations observed in the intrinsic fiber reliefs are due to the formation of a fine layer on the fiber surfaces. The observed decrease in roughness after plasma modification is due to temperature and radiation effects of the plasma. In vitro experiments with human osteosarcoma cells show that the scaffolds investigated here have no cytotoxic effect on these cells. The cells adhere and proliferate well on each of the surface-modified electrospun scaffolds, with stimulation of cell differentiation in the osteogenic direction.

Effects of Film Thickness of ALD-Deposited Al2O3, ZrO2 and HfO2 Nano-Layers on the Corrosion Resistance of Ti(N,O)-Coated Stainless Steel

The goal of this stydy was to explore the potential of the enhanced corrosion resistance of Ti(N,O) cathodic arc evaporation-coated 304L stainless steel using oxide nano-layers deposited by atomic layer deposition (ALD). In this study, we deposited Al₂O₃, ZrO₂, and HfO₂ nanolayers of two different thicknesses by ALD onto Ti(N,O)-coated 304L stainless steel surfaces. XRD, EDS, SEM, surface profilometry, and voltammetry investigations of the anticorrosion properties of the coated samples are reported. The amorphous oxide nanolayers homogeneously deposited on the sample surfaces exhibited lower roughness after corrosion attack compared to the Ti(N,O)-coated stainless steel. The best corrosion resistance was obtained for the thickest oxide layers. All samples coated with thicker oxide nanolayers augmented the corrosion resistance of the Ti(N,O)-coated stainless steel in a saline, acidic, and oxidising environment (0.9% NaCl + 6% H₂O₂, pH = 4), which is of interest for building corrosion-resistant housings for advanced oxidation systems such as cavitation and plasma-related electrochemical dielectric barrier discharge for breaking down persistent organic pollutants in water.

Advances in Multifunctional Bioactive Coatings for Metallic Bone Implants

To fix the bone in orthopedics, it is almost always necessary to use implants. Metals provide the needed physical and mechanical properties for load-bearing applications. Although widely used as biomedical materials for the replacement of hard tissue, metallic implants still confront challenges, among which the foremost is their low biocompatibility. Some of them also suffer from excessive wear, low corrosion resistance, infections and shielding stress. To address these issues, various coatings have been applied to enhance their in vitro and in vivo performance. When merged with the beneficial properties of various bio-ceramic or polymer coatings remarkable bioactive, osteogenic, antibacterial, or biodegradable composite implants can be created. In this review, bioactive and high-performance coatings for metallic bone implants are systematically reviewed and their biocompatibility is discussed. Updates in coating materials and formulations for metallic implants, as well as their production routes, have been provided. The ways of improving the bioactive coating performance by incorporating bioactive moieties such as growth factors, osteogenic factors, immunomodulatory factors, antibiotics, or other drugs that are locally released in a controlled manner have also been addressed.

Recent Advancements in Materials and Coatings for Biomedical Implants

Metallic materials such as stainless steel (SS), titanium (Ti), magnesium (Mg) alloys, and cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) alloys are widely used as biomaterials for implant applications. Metallic implants sometimes fail in surgeries due to inadequate biocompatibility, faster degradation rate (Mg-based alloys), inflammatory response, infections, inertness (SS, Ti, and Co-Cr alloys), lower corrosion resistance, elastic modulus mismatch, excessive wear, and shielding stress. Therefore, to address this problem, it is necessary to develop a method to improve the biofunctionalization of metallic implant surfaces by changing the materials’ surface and morphology without altering the mechanical properties of metallic implants. Among various methods, surface modification on metallic surfaces by applying coatings is an effective way to improve implant material performance. In this review, we discuss the recent developments in ceramics, polymers, and metallic materials used for implant applications. Their biocompatibility is also discussed. The recent trends in coatings for biomedical implants, applications, and their future directions were also discussed in detail.

Detection and Analysis of Corrosion and Contact Resistance Faults of TiN and CrN Coatings on 410 Stainless Steel as Bipolar Plates in PEM Fuel Cells

Bipolar Plates (BPPs) are the most crucial component of the Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) fuel cell system. To improve fuel cell stack performance and lifetime, corrosion resistance and Interfacial Contact Resistance (ICR) enhancement are two essential factors for metallic BPPs. One of the most effective methods to achieve this purpose is adding a thin solid film of conductive coating on the surfaces of these plates. In the present study, 410 Stainless Steel (SS) was selected as a metallic bipolar plate. The coating process was performed using titanium nitride and chromium nitride by the Cathodic Arc Evaporation (CAE) method. The main focus of this study was to select the best coating among CrN and TiN on the proposed alloy as a substrate of PEM fuel cells through the comparison technique with simultaneous consideration of corrosion resistance and ICR value. After verifying the TiN and CrN coating compound, the electrochemical assessment was conducted by the potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) tests. The results of PDP show that all coated samples have an increase in the polarization resistance (Rp) values (ranging from 410.2 to 690.6 Ω·cm2) compared to substrate 410 SS (230.1 Ω·cm2). Corrosion rate values for bare 410 SS, CrN, and TiN coatings were measured as 0.096, 0.032, and 0.060 mpy, respectively. Facilities for X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM, TeScan-Mira III model and made in the Czech Republic), and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDXS) were utilized to perform phase, corrosion behavior, and microstructure analysis. Furthermore, ICR tests were performed on both coated and uncoated specimens. However, the ICR of the coated samples increased slightly compared to uncoated samples. Finally, according to corrosion performance results and ICR values, it can be concluded that the CrN layer is a suitable choice for deposition on 410 SS with the aim of being used in a BPP fuel cell system.

Anticorrosion Coated Stainless Steel as Durable Support for C-N-TiO2 Photo Catalyst Layer

The development of durable photocatalytic supports resistant in harsh environment has become challenging in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) focusing on water and wastewater remediation. In this study, stainless steel (SS), SS/Ti (N,O) and SS/Cr-N/Cr (N,O) anticorrosion layers on SS meshes were dip-coated with sol gel synthesised C-N-TiO₂ photo catalysts pyrolysed at 350 °C for 105 min, using a heating rate of 50 °C/min under N₂ gas. The supported C-N-TiO₂ films were characterised by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The results showed that C-N-TiO₂ was successfully deposited on anticorrosion coated SS supports and had different morphologies. The amorphous C and TiO₂ were predominant in C-N-TiO₂ over anatase and rutile phases on the surface of SS and anticorrosion supports. The C-N-TiO₂ coated films showed enhanced photocatalytic activity for the decolouration of O.II dye under both solar and UV radiations. The fabricated C-N-TiO₂ films showed significant antibacterial activities in the dark as well as in visible light. Herein, we demonstrate that SS/Ti(N,O) and SS/Cr-N/Cr(N,O) anticorrosion coatings are adequate photocatalytic and corrosion resistant supports. The C-N-TiO₂ photo catalytic coatings can be used for water and wastewater decontamination of pollutants and microbes.
