Effect of UV Top Coating Microcapsules on the Coating Properties of Fiberboard Surfaces

The commonly used ultraviolet ray (UV) curing coatings have the characteristics of fast curing speed, high hardness, strong abrasion resistance, etc. However, the self-healing properties of UV coatings after being damaged still need to be improved. Self-healing microcapsules can alleviate this problem. The UV top coating itself has good properties, so it can be directly chosen as the core material of microcapsules. UV top coating microcapsules can be added to the UV top coating to increase the self-healing properties of the UV coating to achieve the purpose of better protection of the UV coating and fiberboards. UV top coating microcapsules were prepared and added in different contents to characterize the effect on the physical, chemical, and self-healing properties of the UV coating on a fiberboard surface. The 1#, 2#, and 3# UV top coating microcapsules that were prepared with emulsifier HLB values of 10.04, 10.88, and 11.72, respectively, were added to the UV top coating at contents of 2.0%, 4.0%, 6.0%, 8.0%, and 10.0%. The UV coatings were applied to the fiberboard using a method of two primers and two top coatings, in which no microcapsule was added in the primer, and were tested and analyzed. The results showed that when the content of microcapsules was greater than 6.0%, close to 8.0%, the excessive density of microcapsules produced stacking and extrusion between the microcapsules. As a result, the core material could not flow out smoothly when part of the microcapsule was ruptured. The outflow of the core material was not efficiently utilized, thus leading to a decrease in the self-healing rate. The 2# UV top coating microcapsules of 4.0% made the UV coatings reach the self-healing rate of 26.41%. The self-healing rate of the UV coatings prepared with the 3# UV top coating microcapsules with 6.0% was up to 26.58%. The UV coatings prepared with the 1# UV top coating microcapsules of 6.0% had the highest self-healing rate among the three groups, up to 27.32%. The UV coatings of this group had the best comprehensive properties with a chromatic aberration ΔE of 4.08, a gloss of 1.10 GU, a reflectance of 17.13%, an adhesion grade of 3, a hardness of 3H, a grade 3 of impact resistance, and a roughness of 1.677 μm. An investigation of the UV coatings on fiberboard surfaces with the content of UV top coating microcapsules can provide support for the optimization of the self-healing properties of UV coatings and can also provide innovative ideas for the preparation of the self-healing coatings on fiberboard surfaces.

Preparation of UV Topcoat Microcapsules and Their Effect on the Properties of UV Topcoat Paint Film

An orthogonal experiment was designed to prepare different UV topcoat microcapsules by adjusting the mass ratio of wall material to core material, HLB value of emulsifier, reaction temperature, and reaction time of UV topcoat microcapsule. By testing the morphology and multiple properties of UV topcoat microcapsules, it was found that the biggest factor affecting the synthesis of UV topcoat microcapsules is the emulsifier HLB value. In order to further optimize the performance of UV topcoat microcapsules, a single-factor experiment was conducted with the emulsifier HLB value as the variable, and it was found that the UV topcoat microcapsules achieved the best performance when the emulsifier HLB value was 10.04. The optimal UV topcoat microcapsules were added to the UV topcoat at different amounts to prepare UV topcoat paint films. Through testing the various properties of the UV topcoat paint film, it was determined that the performance of the UV topcoat paint film was optimal when the amount of UV topcoat microcapsules added to the UV topcoat was 4.0%. The optical properties of the UV topcoat paint film were tested, and the effect of UV topcoat microcapsules on the color difference and glossiness of the UV topcoat paint film was not significant. The tensile and self-healing performance of UV topcoat microcapsules were tested. UV topcoat microcapsules can enhance the toughness of the UV topcoat paint film to a certain extent, suppress the generation of microcracks, and have a good self-healing effect. The results provide experimental support for the preparation of microcapsules using UV coatings as core materials for the self-healing of UV coatings.

Effects of Shellac Self-Repairing and Carbonyl Iron Powder Microcapsules on the Properties of Dulux Waterborne Coatings on Wood

Magnetic carbonyl iron powder (CIP) microcapsules were created by in situ polymerization using melamine resin as the wall material and CIP as the core material. They were mixed with shellac self-repairing microcapsules to prepare dual-functional wood coatings, and the effect of different amounts of CIP microcapsules in the Dulux Waterborne primer on the performance of the primer was investigated. The findings demonstrated that the core-wall ratio had a significant impact on the characteristics of CIP microcapsules. The microcapsule coating rate reached 57.7% when the core-wall ratio was 0.65:1. The maximum reflection loss of CIP microcapsules with the core-wall ratio of 0.70:1 is -10.53 dB. When the addition amount of shellac self-repairing microcapsules is 4.2%, and the additional amount of CIP microcapsules with a core wall ratio of 0.65:1 and 0.70:1 is 3.0%, the coating color difference is the smallest. The number of microcapsules causes a noticeable drop in the coating's gloss, and the amount of microcapsules causes a small negative change in the coating's adherence. With an increase in the number of microcapsules, the coating's hardness, impact resistance, and tensile resistance first rose and subsequently fell. When the content of CIP microcapsules with core-wall ratio of 0.65:1 and 0.70:1 was 9.0%, the hardness, elongation at break and repair rate of the coating reached the best performance. According to a comprehensive analysis, when the content of CIP microcapsules with core-wall ratio of 0.70:1 is 9.0%, the coating has good performance. At this time, the coating has a color difference of 1.83, a glossiness of 19.3, an adhesion of 2 H, a hardness of 3 H, an impact resistance of 17 kg·cm, and a repair rate of 33.3%. This provides a technical basis for the application of multifunctional coatings on wooden substrates.

Preparation of Aloe-Emodin Microcapsules and Its Effect on Antibacterial and Optical Properties of Water-Based Coating

With the development of science and technology, the function of waterborne coatings has been advanced to a higher standard, which requires researchers to innovate and expand the research on them. Aloe-emodin is a natural material with antibacterial properties. Applying its antibacterial effect to the coating can enrich its function and meet the diversified needs of consumers. In this study, the urea-formaldehyde resin was used as the wall material and the aloe-emodin as the core material to prepare the microcapsules. The coating rate, yield, and morphology of the microcapsules were characterized. Through an orthogonal experiment and a single factor experiment, the optimization scheme of microcapsule preparation was explored. The results indicated that the optimum preparation process of aloe-emodin microcapsules was as follows: the mass ratio of core material to wall material was 1:15, the molar ratio of urea to formaldehyde was 1:1.2, the temperature of microencapsulation was 50 °C, and the stirring speed of microencapsulation was 600 rpm. On this basis, the aloe-emodin microcapsules with 0%, 1.0%, 3.0%, 6.0%, 9.0%, and 12.0% contents were added to the waterborne coating to prepare the paint films, and their influence on the antibacterial and optical properties of the waterborne paint films was explored. The results demonstrated that the aloe-emodin microcapsules had antibacterial activity. When the content was 6.0%, the comprehensive performance of the film was better. The antibacterial rate of the film against Escherichia coli was 68.1%, and against Staphylococcus aureus it was 60.7%. The color difference of the film was 59.93, and the glossiness at 60° was 7.8%. In this study, the microcapsules that can improve the antibacterial performance of water-based coatings were prepared, which can expand the application of water-based coatings and provide a reference for the study of the functionalization of water-based coatings.

Preparation of Antibacterial Nanosilver Solution Microcapsules and Their Impact on the Performance of Andoung Wood Surface Coating

In this paper, nanosilver solution was used as an antibacterial agent to prepare antibacterial microcapsules. The mass ratio of the core material to the wall material (Wcore: Wwall), the emulsifier’s hydrophilic–lipophilic balance (HLB) value, the mass ratio of ethanol to the emulsifier in solvent (Wcore: Wemulsion), and the rotational speed (r/min) were used to develop the four-factor, three-level orthogonal experiment, which was meant to investigate the most significant factors and the optimum process preparation parameters impacting the coating rate and yield of microcapsules. It was used to make an antibacterial coating that was applied to the surface paint film of a glass substrate and andoung wood, and it was mixed to the water-based primer with a content of 4%. Analyses of the mechanical, optical, and bactericidal characteristics were conducted. The micromorphology of the nanosilver solution microcapsules is influenced by the emulsifier’s HLB value. The color difference of the antibacterial coating film decreased with increasing emulsifier HLB value; however, the coating film’s gloss remained largely suitable. Additionally, the coating film’s transparency and tensile strength both decreased. It had minimal impact on the paint film’s surface hardness, but the adhesion and tensile strength showed a noticeable downward trend. The surface of the paint film was rough. Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were resistant to the antibacterial characteristics of the water-based primer film when it was combined with antibacterial nanosilver solution microcapsules by 80.7% and 74.55%, respectively. The coating film’s antibacterial properties were applied to the surface of the andoung wood, which were 75.7% and 71.0%, respectively, and somewhat decreased. In order to successfully inhibit bacteria, the nanosilver solution microcapsules were added to waterborne coatings. This ensures both the outstanding performance of the coating film and the effectiveness of the antibacterial effect. It expands the application prospects of antibacterial microcapsules in coatings.

Using Statistical Methods to Comparatively Analyze the Visual Characteristics of Flattened Bamboo Boards in Different Bamboo Culms

Different flattened bamboo boards will produce different visual effects, which directly determine consumers’ preferences. However, their visual characteristics were unknown. To clarify the visual effects of flattened bamboo boards in different bamboo culms, the visual, physical, and psychological quantities were firstly studied using their quantitative color and glossiness measurements, combined with quantitative semantic differential and statistical methods. Key results revealed that the values of lightness L* and blue–yellow index b* from the base to the top of the bamboo culms tended to decrease gradually, while green–red index a* values exhibited an increasing trend, and glossiness G_ZL (G_ZT) showed no significant difference. The L* value of bamboo outer layer (30.18) was smaller than that of the outer (61.90) and the inner (68.68), which had an increasing trend from the outside to the inside of the bamboo culm, while the G_ZL (G_ZT) values corresponded to 6.07 (4.66), 4.51 (3.12), and 2.77 (2.55), showing an opposite trend. The a* and b* values present a rise-fall tendency. According to visual psychological assessment, the outer was reflected as an “artificial–decorative”, “smooth–warm”, and “comfort–sophisticated” feeling; the inner had an “artificial–practical”, “smooth–warm”, and “comfort–sophisticated” sense; the bamboo outer layer had an “nature–practical”, “rough–cold”, and “sick–primitive” sense. Furthermore, predictive models for visual psychological quantities were constructed. This work provides a theoretical data basis for furniture design and standard materials application of flattened bamboo boards.

Effects of Adding Methods of Fluorane Microcapsules and Shellac Resin Microcapsules on the Preparation and Properties of Bifunctional Waterborne Coatings for Basswood

In this paper, urea-formaldehyde resin microcapsules with shellac resin as core material were prepared by in-situ polymerization. Morphologies of shellac resin microcapsules were characterized by optical microscope (OM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Both microcapsules were spherical in shape. The encapsulation property of shellac resin was proved by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). Shellac resin microcapsules and fluorane microcapsules were added to waterborne primer or topcoat at the same time to prepare waterborne coatings with thermochromic and self-healing dual functions. The effects of microcapsules on optical properties, mechanical properties, self-healing properties, anti-aging performance, and thermoreversible discolouration mechanism of coating films were studied. These results showed that the topcoat with 10.0% fluorane microcapsules and 5.0% shellac resin microcapsules had a better comprehensive performance. At this time, the colour of coating transformed yellow into colourless at 32 °C, and it had a good colour recovery. Shellac resin microcapsules endowed the coating with self-healing performance, and the self-healing rate was 35.9%. The research results provide a reference for the progression of multifunctional wood coatings.

Effect of Fluorane Microcapsule Content on Properties of Thermochroic Waterborne Topcoat on Tilia europaea

In a particular temperature range, 1, 2-benzo-6-diethylamino-fluorane microcapsules (fluorane microcapsules) exhibit a good color-changing function. For the coating on wood surfaces, embedding fluorane microcapsules, good weather resistance, light retention, color retention, impact resistance, and wear resistance are essential. However, the effect of fluorane microcapsule content on its properties has not been verified. Therefore, in this paper, the orthogonal test is designed with the fluorane microcapsule content, drying temperature, and drying time as test factors to identify the most influential factors. Then, by embedding microcapsules into the waterborne coating on wood substrates, the performance of the waterborne topcoat was investigated. The results show that the color of the waterborne topcoat with fluorane microcapsules on a basswood (Tilia europaea) surface can change between yellow and colorless when the temperature rises and falls, achieving reversible thermochromism. The activation temperature was 32 °C, and the range of discoloration temperature was 30–32 °C. The topcoat with a 15% fluorane microcapsule content had the best comprehensive performance. The color difference was 71.9 at 32 °C, the gloss was 3.9% at 60°, the adhesion grade was 0, the hardness was 2H, the impact resistance was 10 kg·cm, the elongation at the break was 15.56%, and liquid resistance was outstanding. After aging tests, the color difference of the topcoat with 15% fluorane microcapsules was more obvious. The damaged area of the topcoat with the addition of 15% fluorane microcapsules was smaller, indicating it had a better aging resistance. The experimental results lay the foundation for the preparation of intelligence-indicating and decorative waterborne coating.

Preparation of Cellulose Modified Wall Material Microcapsules and Its Effect on the Properties of Wood Paint Coating

An orthogonal experiment with four factors and three levels was designed. Nine different microcapsules were prepared by changing four factors: the core–wall ratio, emulsifier concentration, reaction temperature, and rotation speed. Through an analysis of the microcapsule yield and morphology, it was determined that the microcapsule of sample 6 performed the best in the orthogonal test and that the core–wall ratio was the largest factor affecting the microcapsule morphology and yield. In order to further optimize the performance of the microcapsules, single factor independent tests were carried out using the core–wall ratio as a single variable. It was found that the microcapsules with the core–wall ratio of 0.75:1 had good micro morphology and yield. The properties of the coating were the best when the microcapsules were added into the primer and the topcoat at the same time with an additional amount of 10.0%. The mechanical properties of the coating containing cellulose microcapsules and the coating without cellulose microcapsules were tested. Cellulose can enhance the toughness of the microcapsules, inhibit the generation of microcracks, and enhance the performance of the coating to a certain extent. The elongation at break of the coating with cellulose microcapsules was 9.49% higher than that without cellulose and was 11.1% higher than that without cellulose microcapsules.

Effect of Transparent, Purple, and Yellow Shellac Microcapsules on Properties of the Coating on Paraberlinia bifoliolata Surface

In order to explore the applicability of the waterborne coating with self-repairing microcapsules based on the surface of wood boards and specify the optimal range of microcapsule content in the coating, three different kinds of shellac microcapsules (transparent shellac, purple shellac, and yellow shellac) were embedded in a waterborne acrylic coating at 0, 1.5 wt.%, 3.0 wt.%, 4.5 wt.%, 6.0 wt.%, and 7.5 wt.%. The Beli wood (Paraberlinia bifoliolata) boards were then covered with self-repairing coatings to investigate the self-repairing coating’s physical and chemical properties, aging resistance, and scratch repair abilities. The findings demonstrated that the chromatic difference and gloss of surface coatings on Beli wood boards were significantly influenced by the content of microcapsules. The optical characteristics and cold liquid resistance performance of the coating on Beli wood were enhanced when the microcapsule content was 3.0 wt.%. Additionally, the mechanical qualities of the coating with 3.0 wt.% transparent shellac microcapsules on Beli wood surface were better, with an H hardness, grade 2 adhesion, and 8 kg·cm of impact strength. The studies on scratch repairing and aging resistance indicated that microcapsules helped to slow down the coating’s damage and retard aging. After a microcrack appeared, the waterborne coating with microcapsules on Beli wood’s surface had the capacity to repair itself. After aging, the coating with 3.0 wt.% transparent shellac microcapsule on Beli wood boards had a better performance on the comprehensive properties, with a 28.9% light loss rate and a 6 kg·cm impact resistance. It also had a 25.0% repairing rate in scratch width after being damaged for 5 d. This study advances the development of self-healing waterborne coatings on the wood board with shellac microcapsules by examining the effects of shellac in various colors and shellac microcapsule content in waterborne coatings.

Effect of Transparent, Purple, and Yellow Shellac Microcapsules on the Optical Properties and Self-Healing Performance of Waterborne Coatings

Three kinds of melamine-formaldehyde (MF) microcapsules, containing transparent shellac, purple shellac, and yellow shellac as core curing agents, were synthesized via in situ polymerization, and then were embedded into the water-based acrylic resin coatings according to the concentrations of 0, 3.0%, 6.0%, 9.0%, 12.0%, and 15.0%, respectively, to obtain waterborne films with different microcapsule contents. The color of different shellacs was relevant to the color parameters of the self-healing waterborne film. The content of microcapsules was negatively correlated with the chromatic aberration of the surface of waterborne films. When the content of microcapsules was 0–6.0%, the chromatic aberration of waterborne films was relatively low. The content of microcapsules and the color of the different shellacs would affect the light transmittance of waterborne films. Among all samples, the light transmittance of the waterborne film containing 3.0% transparent shellac microcapsules was the highest. The microcapsules with different colors of shellac in waterborne films had different self-repairing effects. When the content of microcapsules did not exceed 6.0%, the tensile repair rate of the waterborne film containing yellow shellac encapsulated microcapsules was the highest, at 47.19%. The scratch experiment illustrated that the scratch width of the waterborne coating with yellow shellac microcapsules decreased most significantly, and the width change rate was 73.0% after 5 days. The coating containing the 3.0% yellow shellac microcapsule has the best comprehensive performance on optical and self-healing properties. Exploring the influence of shellac resin’s color and the microcapsules’ content on the waterborne film provides technical references for the application of shellac in waterborne coatings and contribute to the further development of the preparation process of self-healing coatings.

Preparation of Healable Shellac Microcapsules and Color-Changing Microcapsules and Their Effect on Properties of Surface Coatings on Hard Broad-Leaved Wood Substrates

In order to protect the wood surface and improve the properties of coatings, microcapsules with healable and discoloration functions are produced, and their healable function is obtained using shellac, which can be cured at room temperature, as the repairing agent. In this paper, self-made shellac microcapsules and color-changing microcapsules were added to varnish in different proportions to form the composite coating on a wood board, and the color difference of the coating was measured at different temperatures to study the influence of microcapsules on the degree of surface color on the substrate. The effect of microcapsules on the healable performance of coatings on a wood board was studied by scratching the surface of the coating with a utility knife and observing the process of repair. The optimal sample was selected from the orthogonal experiment for the independent experiment. The surface roughness, hardness, infrared spectrum, and scanning electron microscopy of the optimal sample were tested, and the content in the optimal sample was further investigated. The results show that color-changing microcapsules have a color-changing effect on surface coatings based on wood boards, and shellac microcapsules inhibit the color-changing effect of color-changing microcapsules. Composite microcapsules can repair the cracks on the surface coatings of wood boards. In cases where shellac microcapsules can self-repair the coating, the color-changing effect is best when the content of color-changing powder is 15.0%.

Effects of Thermochromic Fluorane Microcapsules and Self-Repairing Waterborne Acrylic Microcapsules on the Properties of Water-Based Coatings on Basswood Surface

The effect of the addition of fluorane microcapsules and urea formaldehyde resin (UF) waterborne acrylic resin microcapsules on the comprehensive properties of the water film on the surface of basswood was studied. Three-factor and two-level orthogonal experiments were carried out with "fluorane microcapsule content", "aqueous acrylic resin microcapsule content" and the "fluorane microcapsule addition method" to prepare a self-repairing thermochromic coating. The optical, mechanical, microstructure and self-repairing properties of the film were optimized by independent experiments on the maximum influence factors of the fluorane microcapsule content. It was concluded that the topcoat with 15% fluorane microcapsules and primer added with 15% water acrylic resin microcapsules had better comprehensive properties. The temperature range was 30-32 °C, the color difference at 32 °C was 72.6 ± 2.0, the 60° gloss was 3.3%, the adhesion was 0 grade, the hardness was 4 H, the impact resistance was 15.0 ± 0.8 kg∙cm, the elongation at break was 17.2% and the gap width was reduced by 3.5 ± 0.1 μm after the film was repaired. The repair rate reached 62.5%. By using microcapsule embedding technology, the repair agent and discoloration agent are embedded in the matrix. The waterborne acrylic resin microcapsules can effectively inhibit crack formation in the coating, and the fluorane microcapsules can achieve the thermochromic property of the coating. This study provides a new research idea for the self-repairing thermochromic dual function of a water-based coating.

Preparation of Thermochromic Microcapsules of Bisphenol A and Crystal Violet Lactone and Their Effect on Coating Properties

Thermochromic microcapsules were prepared with a thermochromic compound as core material and urea formaldehyde as wall material. The molar ratio of urea and formaldehyde, the mass ratio of core material to wall material, the concentration of emulsifier, and rotating speed were selected to make a four-level and three-factor L9(34) orthogonal test. It was found that the molar ratio of urea and formaldehyde had the greatest influence on the coating rate of microcapsules. The effects of molar ratio of urea and formaldehyde on the discoloration temperature and coating rate of microcapsules were studied. When the molar ratio of urea to formaldehyde was 1:1.6, the core material: wall material ratio was 4:7, the concentration of emulsifier was 5.0%, and the rotating speed was 1600 rpm, the performance of the microcapsules was the best. When the microcapsule content was 20.0%, the color difference of the paint film was the largest, the gloss and hardness of the paint film decreased with increasing microcapsule content, and the impact resistance of the paint film first increased and then decreased with increasing microcapsule content. The adhesion of the paint film remained unchanged, and was grade 1. When the microcapsule content was 20.0%, the performance of the paint film was at its best. This provides a basis for the application of thermochromic coatings.

Influence of HLB Value of Emulsifier on the Properties of Microcapsules and Self-Healing Properties of Waterborne Coatings

In this paper, self-healing microcapsules were prepared by using melamine-formaldehyde (MF) resin as the wall material and shellac as the core material repairing agent. In order to explore the effect of the four factors (i.e., the HLB value of emulsifier, the type of solvent, the mass ratio of shellac to rosin, and the rate of rotating) on the comprehensive performance of microcapsules, and orthogonal experiments with four factors and three levels were carried out. The results showed that the hydrophilic lipophilic balance (HLB) value of the emulsifier was the most important influencing factor. In order to further explore the relationship between the HLB value of the emulsifier and the morphology of the microcapsules and the coating rate as well as to further optimize the performance of the microcapsules, taking the HLB value of the emulsifier as the single factor variable, single-factor tests were carried out. The results showed that when the HLB value was 12.56, the microcapsules of melamine-formaldehyde resin-coated shellac-rosin mixture had a uniform distribution and high coating rate. In order to explore the self-healing properties of waterborne coatings with microcapsules, the microcapsules prepared by single-factor experiments were mixed into the waterborne coatings at mass ratios of 0%, 3.0%, 6.0%, 9.0%, 12.0%, and 15.0%. It showed that the elongation at break of the waterborne coating with the addition of 3.0% microcapsule at mass fraction was improved, and it had a higher repair rate. This study provides a new research idea for the optimization and characterization of the self-healing properties of waterborne coatings.

Effect of Polyurethane Non-Transparent Coating Process on Paint Film Performance Applied on Modified Poplar

Whether modified poplar can obtain a qualified or even excellent finishing effect on European and American furniture is worthy of deep study. To evaluate whether the conventional non-transparent coating process is suitable for modified poplar, a multi-level hybrid orthogonal experiment method was carried out to start research on how factors affect the paint film performance of the non-transparent coating process. The effect of experimental factors and levels on paint film performance is pointed out, and the optimal factors and levels are found. Parameter optimization of the polyurethane non-transparent finishing process based on modified poplar is carried out. An application basis was provided for the extensive use of modified poplar wood as a substrate in the European and American furniture markets. The conclusions are: (1) gloss of paint film can be improved by increasing the number of nitrocellulose (NC) lacquer transparent topcoats, (2) adhesion and thickness of paint film can be improved by polyurethane (PU) sealing primer, (3) the initial paint film’s abrasion is influenced efficiently by the coating process and coating sanding. PU sealing primer has an efficient influence on the later abrasion of paint film. The effect of modified poplar surface pretreatment on the mass loss of paint film tends to be stable.

Effect of Microcapsules with Waterborne Coating as Core Material on Properties of Coating for Tilia Europaea and Comparison with Other Microcapsules

Urea formaldehyde was used as wall material and waterborne coatings as a core material to prepare microcapsules. So as to explore the influence of mass ratio of core to shell, reaction temperature and standing time on the performance of microcapsules, the orthogonal test of three factors and two levels was put into effect. The orthogonal experimental results showed the mass ratio of core to shell was the most important factor. With the increase of the mass ratio of core to shell, the output and clad ratio of microcapsules increased first and then decreased. The microcapsule with the mass ratio of core to shell of 0.67:1 had better appearance, output, and encapsulation performance. The optical properties of waterborne wood coating with the microcapsules of waterborne coating as core materials did not decrease significantly, while the hardness, impact resistance, and toughness were improved. At the same time, the microcapsules have a certain self-repairing effect on coating micro-cracks. Compared with the properties of waterborne coatings with other microcapsules, the coating with waterborne coating as core material has better comprehensive performance. The results provide a new research idea for the performance enhancement and self-healing of wood waterborne coating.

Preparation and Performance of Thermochromic and Self-Repairing Dual Function Paint Film with Lac Resin Microcapsules and Fluorane Microcapsules

Microcapsules with lac resin as the core material and urea-formaldehyde resin as the wall material were prepared by in situ polymerization, and then the lac resin microcapsules and fluorane microcapsules were added into a water-based primer or topcoat, respectively, to prepare water-based coatings with dual functions of thermochromic and self-repair. The effects of different methods of adding microcapsules on the optical properties, mechanical properties, self-repairing properties, and the aging resistance of water-based paint film were investigated, so as to prepare water-based paint film with the best discoloration and self-repairing functions. The results showed that the paint film with 10.0% fluorane microcapsules in the topcoat and 5.0% lac resin microcapsules in the primer had better comprehensive properties, and the paint film changed from yellow to colorless at 32 °C, with a color difference of 68.9, hardness of 3H, adhesion grade of 0, impact resistance of 13.0 kg∙cm, and elongation at break of 20.0%. The resistance of the paint film to NaCl, ethanol, and detergent was grade 2, with slight discontinuous marks, and the resistance to red ink was grade 3, with slight marks. The lac resin microcapsules have good aging resistance, which can enhance the aging resistance of the paint film with fluorane microcapsules. The gap width of the paint film was repaired by 2.1 µm, the self-repairing rate was 12.3%, and the paint film with lac resin microcapsules had a better crack inhibition effect. The results have provided a reference for multifunctional wood coatings.

Coating Process Optimization and Self-Healing Performance Evaluation of Shellac Microcapsules Coated with Melamine/Rice Husk Powder

To explore the implication of the coating process on the comprehensive properties of water-based coating containing shellac microcapsules coated with melamine/rice husk powder on the Tilia cordata surface, the optical properties, mechanical properties, liquid resistance, aging resistance, chemical composition, and microstructure of the coating were analyzed comprehensively. After the best coating process was determined, compared with the coating without microcapsules, the self-repairing performance of the water-based coating containing shellac microcapsules coated with melamine/rice husk powder was explored via aging resistance test and scratch test. The results showed that the best comprehensive performance of the coating was obtained by three times primer, two times finish, and 6.0% shellac microcapsules coated with melamine/rice husk powder added in the primer. The coating with shellac microcapsules had significant stability, aging resistance, and self-healing performance, which can repair cracks in a certain period of time and inhibit the formation of cracks. At the core wall ratio of 0.75, the shellac which plays a role of the repair agent as the core material can effectively fill the microcracks in the coating to repair by flowing from the broken microcapsule because it can be physically cured at room temperature. The modification of waterborne coatings with shellac microcapsules coated with melamine/rice husk powder contributes the improved self-repairing properties of surface coatings containing heterogeneous natural polymer composites.

Preparation of Silver Antibacterial Agents with Different Forms and Their Effects on the Properties of Water-Based Primer on Tilia europaea Surface

Micron silver particles prepared by the chemical reduction method, urea formaldehyde resin-coated nano-silver solution microcapsules, and nano-silver solution were used as three kinds of antibacterial agents. These were added to a water-based primer on the surface of Tilia europaea in contents of 1.0%, 4.0%, 7.0%, 10.0%, 13.0%, and 16.0%. In order to achieve the best comprehensive performance of the water-based primer, the mechanical, optical, and antibacterial properties of the three antibacterial coatings with different contents of silver antibacterial agents were explored. It was concluded that when the antibacterial agent content was 4.0%, the color difference, impact resistance, adhesion, and gloss of water-based primer on the Tilia europaea surface were better. When the antibacterial agent content added was 16.0%, the antibacterial properties of the three groups of coatings improved to 94.89%, 81.75%, and 83.98%, respectively. The results provide a research idea for the preparation of antibacterial coatings on the surface of wood furniture.

Effect of Microcapsule Concentration with Different Core-Shell Ratios on Waterborne Topcoat Film Properties for Tilia europaea

The effects of the core-shell ratio and concentration of urea formaldehyde (UF) resin-coated waterborne acrylic resin microcapsules on the optical properties, mechanical properties and liquid resistance of waterborne topcoat coatings on the surface of Tilia europaea were investigated. With the increase of microcapsule concentration, the color difference and hardness of the paint film gradually increased, the gloss and adhesion of the paint film gradually decreased, and the impact resistance and elongation at break of the paint film increased first and then decreased. With the increase of the core-shell ratio, the hardness and impact resistance of the paint film increased first and then decreased, and the adhesion of the paint film decreased gradually. Red ink had a great influence on the liquid resistance of paint film. When the core-shell ratio of UF-coated waterborne acrylic resin microcapsule was 0.58:1 and the microcapsule concentration was 10.0%, the comprehensive performance of paint film on Tilia europaea was better. The prepared self-healing microcapsules applied to the waterborne coatings committed to prolonging the service life of the paint film.

Effect of Water-Based Acrylic Acid Microcapsules on the Properties of Paint Film for Furniture Surface

In this paper, self-healing microcapsules with urea formaldehyde coated Nippon water-based acrylic acid were prepared, and the performance of water-based topcoat paint film added with self-healing microcapsules and the repair effect of microcapsules were investigated. The results show that when the content of microcapsules in water-based topcoat paint film on the surface of wood increased, the color difference and hardness rose gradually, the gloss and adhesion declined gradually, the impact resistance and tensile strength at break rose first and then declined. The 0.67:1 core-wall ratio microcapsules had a better micromorphology, and the water-based topcoat paint film with 0.67:1 microcapsules had a certain repair effect. The microcapsules were added to the water-based topcoat paint film to repair the coating to a certain extent, which provide technical reference for prolonging the service life of water-based topcoat paint film for the furniture surface.

Effect of Shellac Waterborne Coating Microcapsules on the Optical, Mechanical and Self-Healing Properties of Waterborne Primer on Tilia europaea L. Wood

Microcapsules of melamine formaldehyde-coated shellac and waterborne coating were prepared by in situ polymerization at 400, 600, 800 and 1000 rpm. The microcapsules prepared at four different stirring rates were added into the waterborne primer at a concentration of 5.0%, 10.0%, 15.0%, 20.0% and 25.0%. The effects of microcapsules prepared at different stirring rates and the concentration of microcapsules added into the paint film on the optical, mechanical and liquid resistance properties of the paint film were investigated. The results showed that the comprehensive performance of Tilia europaea L. waterborne primer film was the best when the concentration of microcapsules obtained at 600 rpm was 5.0%. On this basis, the aging resistance and self-healing performance of waterborne primer film on Tilia europaea L. with the best comprehensive performance were explored to lay the foundation for optimizing the preparation process of self-healing coating.
