Effective Detoxification of Aflatoxin B1 and Ochratoxin A Using Magnetic Graphene Oxide Nanocomposite: Isotherm and Kinetic Study

Ochratoxin A: Overview of Prevention, Removal, and Detoxification Methods

Ochratoxins are the secondary metabolites of Penicillium and Aspergillus, among which ochratoxin A (OTA) is the most toxic molecule. OTA is widely found in food and agricultural products. Due to its severe nephrotoxicity, immunotoxicity, neurotoxicity, and teratogenic mutagenesis, it is essential to develop effective, economical, and environmentally friendly methods for OTA decontamination and detoxification. This review mainly summarizes the application of technology in OTA prevention, removal, and detoxification from physical, chemical, and biological aspects, depending on the properties of OTA, and describes the advantages and disadvantages of each method from an objective perspective. Overall, biological methods have the greatest potential to degrade OTA. This review provides some ideas for searching for new strains and degrading enzymes.

Effect of the Structure of Highly Porous Silica Extracted from Sugarcane Bagasse Fly Ash on Aflatoxin B1 Adsorption

Sugarcane bagasse fly ash is industrial waste produced by incinerating biomass to generate power and steam. The fly ash contains SiO₂ and Al₂O₃, which can be used to prepare aluminosilicate. This latter material exhibits high potential as an adsorbent in various applications, including the livestock industry where issues related to contamination of aflatoxins in animal feeds need to be addressed; addition of adsorbents can help decrease the concentration of aflatoxins during feed digestion. In this study, the effect of the structure of silica prepared from sugarcane bagasse fly ash on physicochemical properties and aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) adsorption capability compared with that of bentonite was investigated. BPS-5, Xerogel-5, MCM-41, and SBA-15 mesoporous silica supports were synthesized using sodium silicate hydrate (Na₂SiO₃) from sugarcane bagasse fly ash as a silica source. BPS-5, Xerogel-5, MCM-41, and SBA-15 exhibited amorphous structures, while sodium silicate possessed a crystalline structure. BPS-5 possessed larger pore size, pore volume, and pore size distribution with a bimodal mesoporous structure, while Xerogel-5 exhibited lower pore size and pore size distribution with a unimodal mesoporous structure. BPS-5 with a negatively charged surface exhibited the highest AFB1 adsorption capability compared with other porous silica. However, the AFB1 adsorption capability of bentonite was superior to those of all porous silica. Sufficient pore diameter with high total pore volume as well as high intensity of acid sites and negative charge on the surface of the adsorbent is required to increase AFB1 adsorption in the in vitro gastrointestinal tract of animals.

Nanomaterials in food industry for the protection from mycotoxins: an update

The storage of food grains against the fungal infection has been a great challenge to the farmers, but nanotechnology provides a solution to address this problem. The application of nanotechnology for the storage of food grains replaces synthetic fungicides in agriculture. Inorganic nanoparticles such as silver and zinc oxide are well-known for their antifungal activity. Green synthesized nanoparticles show enhanced antimicrobial activity than the chemically synthesized nanoparticles. Extracts and essential oils derived from plants exhibit very good antifungal properties. The synthesized nanoparticles can be impregnated in packaging materials, which are used to store food grains. Natural materials are having advantages like non-toxicity and easier to degrade and are suitable for food safety. This overview discusses the nanomaterials-mediated protection of food materials from mycotoxin and its releases into the open environment.

Effectiveness of citrus fruit peel as a biosorbent for the mitigation of aflatoxins in vitro

We assessed the effectiveness of novel and cost-effective citrus fruit peel (oranges, agro-waste material) for the removal of four aflatoxins B₁, B₂, G₁, and G₂ in vitro. The biosorbent was described using SEM, XRF, XRD, FITR spectroscopy, and point of zero charge. The adsorption performance was optimised in a batch experiment by altering the various parameters, such as biosorbent dose (1-15 mg/mL), the preliminary concentration of AFs (20-200 ng/mL), pH (1-9), the incubation period (10-60 min), and temperature (10-45 °C). Maximum removal (90%) was achieved when using biosorbent at 10 mg, each AF concentration 100 ng/mL, pH 3, and incubation time 45 min at 37 °C. The experimental data were well-described by the Langmuir isotherm model and the monolayer coverage (Qe) was calculated to be 78.5, 77.8, 79.2, and 75.6 ng/mg for aflatoxin B₁, B₂, G₁, and G₂, respectively. The thermodynamic and kinetic studies suggested that the adsorption performance was endothermic and obeyed the pseudo-second-order rate model. Studies at different pH also proved that the adsorption of toxins would be strong and sufficient under pH variation, as found in the gastrointestinal tract. Thus the biosorption of AFs by orange peel powder might be an efficient low price detoxification method in humans and animals.

Adsorption and Reduction of Aqueous Cr by FeS-Modified Fe-Al Layered Double Hydroxide

To remedy the widespread chromium (Cr) pollution in the environment, this study mainly used the ultrasonic-assisted co-precipitation and precipitation methods to prepare FeS-modified Fe-Al-layered double hydroxide (FeS/LDH) composite material. The experimental results showed that FeS/LDH has higher removal efficiency of Cr in aqueous solution and stronger anti-interference ability than unmodified LDH. Under the same reaction conditions, the removal efficiency of total Cr(Cr(T)) using LDH was 34.85%, and the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) was 46.76%. For FeS/LDH, the removal efficiency of Cr(T) and Cr(VI) reached 99.57% and 100%, respectively. The restoration of Cr(T) and Cr(VI) by FeS/LDH satisfied the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacity of Cr(T) and Cr(VI) achieved 102.9 mg/g and 147.7 mg/g. The efficient removal of Cr by FeS/LDH was mainly based on the triple synergistic effect of anion exchange between Cr(VI) and interlayer anions, redox of Cr(VI) with Fe2+ and S2−, and co-precipitation of Fe3+ and Cr3+.
