Uses of Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy (SECM) for the Characterization with Spatial and Chemical Resolution of Thin Surface Layers and Coating Systems Applied on Metals: A Review

Effect of Redox Mediators on Corrosion Behavior and Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy Response

Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) is widely used to measure local electrochemical reactivity of corroding surfaces. A major criticism of using SECM in feedback mode for corrosion studies is the requirement of an external redox mediator (RM) as it could react with the metal and affect the Nernst potential at the metal-solution interface. Consequently, it becomes challenging to differentiate the interference caused by the RM from the local reactivity of the metal. Herein, a multiscale electrochemical approach is presented to investigate the effect of RM choice on the corroding substrate. Two common RMs, ferrocenemethanol and hexaammineruthenium(III) chloride, were used to perform SECM over copper and aluminum. It was found during macroscale electrochemical measurements that Ru(NH)63+ acted as an oxidant and promoted corrosion. The SECM feedback behavior varied for copper depending on the RM used, suggesting that the corrosion reactions controlled the negative feedback mechanism, not the formation of an insulating passive film. The passivated aluminum surface consistently exhibited negative feedback, regardless of the RM used. SECM approach curves also displayed a distortion in the steady state current, which was caused by the deposition of substrate-generated species on the microelectrode. These deviations in feedback response were accounted for during analysis through incorporation into a finite element model to accurately extract the RM kinetic rate constants. The importance of understanding these processes is highlighted to avoid misinterpretation of passive behavior and advances toward a more quantitative use of SECM for corrosion studies.

Scanning electrochemical microscopy for the differentiation of radical-induced degradation mechanisms in polymer electrolyte membranes

In this work, a spatially resolved analytical method based on scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) to distinguish different degradation phenomena in polymer electrolyte membranes was developed. SECM was combined with a Franz diffusion cell to distinguish between radical-induced aging of a sulfonated tetrafluoroethylene based fluoropolymer-copolymer due to deactivation of the sulfonic acid groups followed by a decreased proton conductivity, and the radical-induced formation of cracks and holes in the polymer. The experiments were performed with ferrocyanide as redox mediator to detect holes and cracks, and protons (sulfuric acid) to determine the through-plane proton conductivity, respectively. A pristine Nafion™ membrane, a pristine Nafion™ membrane with an artificial pinhole and a Nafion™ membrane aged with Fenton's reagent were investigated to prove the measurement principle. It could be shown that holes and cracks can be reliably detected with this approach and discriminated from a change in proton conductivity. The presence of holes in the investigated aged membranes was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, whereas the loss of sulfonate groups could be supported by infrared spectroscopy measurements.

Exploring the Living Cell: Applications and Advances of Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy

A living cell is a complex network of molecular, biochemical and physiological processes. Cellular activities, such as ion transport, metabolic processes, and cell-cell interactions can be determined electrochemically by detecting the electrons or ions exchanged in these processes. Electrochemical methods often are noninvasive, and they can enable the real-time monitoring of cellular processes. Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) is an advanced scanning probe electroanalysis technique that can map the surface topography and local reactivity of a substrate with high precision at the micro- or nanoscale. By measuring electrochemical signals, such as redox reactions, ion fluxes, and pH changes, SECM can provide valuable insights into cellular activity. As a result of its compatibility with liquid medium measurements and its nondestructive nature, SECM has gained popularity in living cell research. This review aims to furnish an overview of SECM, elucidating its principles, applications, and its potential to contribute significantly to advancements in cell biology, electroporation, and biosensors. As a multidisciplinary tool, SECM is distinguished by its ability to unravel the intricacies of living cells and offers promising avenues for breakthroughs in our understanding of cellular complexity.

Crevice Corrosion Behavior of 201 Stainless Steel in NaCl Solutions with Different pH Values by In Situ Monitoring

Crevice corrosion (CC) behavior of 201 stainless steel (SS) in 1 M NaCl + x M HCl/y M NaOH solutions with various pH was investigated using SECM and optical microscopic observations. Results show that the CC was initiated by the decrease in pH value within the crevice. The pH value near the crevice mouth falls rapidly to 1.38 in the first 2 h in the strongly acidic solution, while the pH value was observed to rise firstly and then decrease in the neutral and alkaline solutions. It indicates there is no incubation phase in the CC evolution of 201-SS in a pH = 2.00 solution, while an incubation phase was observed in pH = 7.00 and 11.00 solutions. Additionally, there appeared to be a radial pH variation within the gap over time. The pH value is the lowest at the gap mouth, which is in line with the in situ optical observation result that the severely corroded region is at the mouth of the gap. The decrease in pH value inside results in the negative shift of open circuit potential (OCP) and the initiation of CC of 201-SS. The increased anodic dissolution rate in the acidic solution accelerates the breakdown of passive film inside, reducing the initiation time and stimulating the spread of CC.
