Abstract
Food loss and waste occur for many reasons, from crop processing to household leftovers. Even though some waste generation is unavoidable, a considerable amount is due to supply chain inefficiencies and damage during transport and handling. Packaging design and materials innovations represent real opportunities to reduce food waste within the supply chain. Besides, changes in people's lifestyles have increased the demand for high-quality, fresh, minimally processed, and ready-to-eat food products with extended shelf-life, that need to meet strict and constantly renewed food safety regulations. In this regard, accurate monitoring of food quality and spoilage is necessary to diminish both health hazards and food waste. Thus, this work provides an overview of the most recent advances in the investigation and development of food packaging materials and design with the aim to improve food chain sustainability. Enhanced barrier and surface properties as well as active materials for food conservation are reviewed. Likewise, the function, importance, current availability, and future trends of intelligent and smart packaging systems are presented, especially considering biobased sensor development by 3D printing technology. In addition, driving factors affecting fully biobased packaging design and materials development and production are discussed, considering byproducts and waste minimization and revalorization, recyclability, biodegradability, and other possible ends-of-life and their impact on product/package system sustainability.

Abstract
Superhydrophobic coatings are limited to poor durability and a tedious preparation process. In this work, an efficient, eco-friendly, and cost-effective sol-gel method is developed for preparing superhydrophobic surfaces using an all-in-one suspension composed of methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS), nano silicon dioxide (SiO2) particles, and micron zinc oxide (ZnO) particles. Superhydrophobic coatings with a contact angle (CA) up to 153.9° and a sliding angle (SA) of about 3.0° are prepared on Q235 steel substrates using MTMS 5 mL, 0.8 g of nano SiO2, and 0.2 g of micron ZnO. The morphology of the superhydrophobic coating is characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the surface is covered with a micro- and nano-scaled hierarchical rough structure. A series of tests are conducted, including long-term stability tests and thermostability tests. The CAs are all above 150°, and the SAs are below 6.3°, indicating the excellent static stability of the prepared superhydrophobic coatings. Moreover, the CA of the superhydrophobic coating remains above 152° after 120 h of UV exposure, and the time for a water droplet to freeze on the surface of the superhydrophobic coating is 18 times of the bare Q235 steel, indicating that the superhydrophobic coating exhibits good resistance to UV radiation and icing-delay properties.

Abstract
In this study, the wettability of PET membranes (prepared with different pore sizes) treated by UV irradiation, thermal annealing or doping with metal nanoparticles was investigated. The wettability was studied using the contact angle method based on the optical microscopy. The membranes were analyzed before and after pore etching, and after each applied treatment. It turned out that membranes with different pore sizes exhibit different wetting behavior. Of particular interest are membranes with 0.53 μm pores. When pristine, they show high hydrophobicity (a high contact angle), but after treatment (some of which can be considered as an accelerated aging), their wetting characteristics swap between a hydrophobic and hydrophilic state. Interactions between packaging material and food and the external environment through fine control of wettability could have a major impact on maintaining product quality.

Abstract
With regard to global concerns, such as water scarcity and aquatic pollution from industries and domestic activities, membrane-based filtration for wastewater treatment has shown promising results in terms of water purification. Filtration by polymeric membranes is highly efficient in separating contaminants; however, such membranes have limited applications. Nanocomposite membranes, which are formed by adding nanofillers to polymeric membrane matrices, can enhance the filtration process. Considerable attention has been given to nanofillers, which include carbon-based nanoparticles and metal/metal oxide nanoparticles. In this review, we first examined the current status of membrane technologies for water filtration, polymeric nanocomposite membranes, and their applications. Additionally, we highlight the challenges faced in water treatment in developing countries.

Abstract
In the current work, a super-repellent biopaper suitable for food contact applications was developed. To do this, three different kinds of biopolymers, namely polylactide (PLA), poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV), and hydrophobic silica microparticles (SiO2), were sequentially processed by electrohydrodynamic processing (EDHP). As a first step, the ultrathin biopolymer fibers were deposited onto a commercial food contact cellulose paper by electrospinning and, thereafter, the nanostructured silica was sequentially electrosprayed. The multilayer coated papers were annealed at different temperatures to promote adhesion between the layers and enhance the super-repellent properties. The developed coatings were characterized in terms of morphology, permeance to water vapor, adhesion, mechanical resistance, and contact and sliding angle. The resultant multilayer biopapers presented a hierarchical micro/nanostructured surface with an apparent water contact angle (WCA) higher than 155° and sliding angle (SA) lower than 10° for all the tested biopolymers used. Among the different multilayer approaches, it was observed that the paper/PHBV/SiO2 showed the best performance, in terms of water vapor permeance; resistance after the tape peeling-off test; and food super-repelling properties to water, yogurt, and custard. Overall, this study presents the successful generation of super-repellent biopapers coated with PLA, PCL, or PHBV along with hydrophobic silica microparticles and its effectiveness for easy emptying food packaging applications to reduce food waste.

Abstract
Packaging is used to protect foods from environmental influences and microbial contamination to maintain the quality and safety of commercial food products, to avoid their spoilage and to extend their shelf life. In this respect, bioactive packaging is developing to additionally provides antibacterial and antioxidant activity with the same goals i.e., extending the shelf life while ensuring safety of the food products. New solutions are designed using natural antimicrobial and antioxidant agents such as essential oils, some polysaccharides, natural inorganic nanoparticles (nanoclays, oxides, metals as silver) incorporated/encapsulated into appropriate carriers in order to be used in food packaging. Electrospinning/electrospraying are receiving attention as encapsulation methods due to their cost-effectiveness, versatility and scalability. The electrospun nanofibers and electro-sprayed nanoparticles can preserve the functionality and protect the encapsulated bioactive compounds (BC). In this review are summarized recent results regarding applications of nanostructured suitable materials containing essential oils for food safety.

Abstract
When highly insulating materials are used as substrates for electronic devices, manufacturing yields become worse, and electronic components are often damaged due to undissipated electrostatic charges on such substrates. In the case of electrospray deposition, the problem of undissipated charges is particularly vexing. If charges accumulated on the substrate are not properly compensated, a repulsive force is generated against the incoming charged droplets, which negatively affects the uniformity and deposition rate of the coating layer. In order to overcome this limitation, we demonstrated a new electrospray method, which can significantly increase the deposition efficiency even in the presence of accumulated charges on nonconductive substrates. A highly reliable superhydrophobic layer was uniformly deposited on highly insulating substrates, including printed circuit board (PCB), polyester (PET), and polyimide (PI) substrates.

Abstract
Biofilm formation represents a significant cause of concern as it has been associated with increased morbidity and mortality, thereby imposing a huge burden on public healthcare system throughout the world. As biofilms are usually resistant to various conventional antimicrobial interventions, they may result in severe and persistent infections, which necessitates the development of novel therapeutic strategies to combat biofilm-based infections. Physicochemical modification of the biomaterials utilized in medical devices to mitigate initial microbial attachment has been proposed as a promising strategy in combating polymicrobial infections, as the adhesion of microorganisms is typically the first step for the formation of biofilms. For instance, superhydrophobic surfaces have been shown to possess substantial anti-biofilm properties attributed to the presence of nanostructures. In this article, we provide an insight into the mechanisms underlying biofilm formation and their composition, as well as the applications of nanomaterials as superhydrophobic nanocoatings for the development of novel anti-biofilm therapies.

Abstract
Polymer-coated steel (PCS) is a new type of metal packaging material under development, which has better performance in saving resources, energy, and environmental protection. The lamination process has an important influence on the bonding quality of the PCS interface. PCS samples under different lamination temperatures and lamination speeds were prepared through experiments. A binding rate is defined to represent the real bonding area of the PCS interface. The micro-scratch tester and scanner are used to study the influence of the lamination process on the bonding rate and bonding strength of the PCS interface. It is proposed that the bonding rate and bonding strength of the PCS interface increases with the increase of lamination temperature and increases with the decrease of lamination speed. The PCS interface bonding rate and bonding strength are positively correlated. SEM and DSC experiments revealed the cause of bubbles on the PCS surface. It is proposed that controlling the uniformity of the TFS surface temperature can reduce the quality defects of PCS surface bubbles. Relevant research results bring guiding significance for the formation of enterprises.

Preliminary Studies on an Innovative Bioactive Skin Soluble Beauty Mask Made by Combining Electrospinning and Dry Powder Impregnation. COSMETICS 2020. Abstract
The world of cosmetics is now aiming at biobased materials which are skin-compatible and can be used to generate more sustainable beauty masks with enhanced bioactivity. This work presents, in this line of interest, the combination of two innovative technologies, namely electrospinning and dry powder impregnation, to generate biobased skin soluble electrospun pullulan carriers dry impregnated with chitin nanofibrils-nanolignin-glycyrrethinic acid (CLA) complexes, as effective biobased and skin compatible beauty masks. The scalability of the pullulan electrospun carrier and bioactive complexes impregnation were optimized and the morphology evaluated. Subsequently, skin compatibility and mask effectiveness were investigated in vitro and in vivo. The results showed that cell viability was optimal for both impregnated and neat pullulan fibers. Additionally, the CLA impregnated pullulan fibers were able to upregulate the endogenous antimicrobial molecule HBD-2. Preliminary studies in vivo indicated that the beauty mask containing the CLA complexes significantly decreased area, length and depth of forehead and crow’s feet wrinkles, and significantly increased moisturizing levels in the skin. The developed beauty mask was also seen to increase skin firmness, while it did not show skin irritation after the test. The work demonstrates that the combination of these two technologies may open new alternatives to more sustainable bioactive cosmetic products for the skin.

Abstract
Intelligent food packaging refers to packages with the ability to sense foodstuff changes and to inform customers of the packaging content variations. They are often accompanied by smart detecting devices. Providing a suitable platform to include these devices into packaging polymers has always been discussing. Electrospun nanofibers produced through the electrospinning have been recently utilized as an outstanding and novel platforms for this purpose. Thus, the main aim of this study is to investigate recent trends in producing intelligent food packaging using electrospinning technique. In this regard, this paper was categorized into two chief sections, including (a) the principal of electrospinning technique to fabricate fine nanofibers and the parameters affecting the quality of electrospun fibers, and (b) the role of nanofibers as a platform to cover pH indicators in intelligent food packaging.

Abstract
In this study, novel active films made of poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) containing a solid dispersion of sage extract (SE) were developed by means of the electrospinning technique and subsequent annealing treatment. Initially, the antioxidant and antimicrobial potential of SE was confirmed. Thereafter, the effect of SE incorporation at different loading contents (5%, 10%, and 20%) on the physicochemical and functional properties of the films was evaluated. The films were characterized in terms of morphology, transparency, water contact angle, thermal stability, tensile properties, water vapor, and aroma barrier performances, as well as antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Thin, hydrophobic films with good contact transparency were produced by annealing of the ultrathin electrospun fibers. Interestingly, the effect of SE addition on tensile properties and thermal stability of the films was negligible. In general, the water vapor and aroma permeability of the PCL-based films increased by adding SE to the polymer. Nevertheless, a strong 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH·) free radical scavenging ability, and a strong activity against foodborne pathogens Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli were achieved by SE incorporation into PCL matrix. Overall, the obtained results suggest great potential of the here-developed PCL-based films containing SE in active food packaging applications with the role of preventing oxidation processes and microbial growth.
