Preparation and Properties of High Hardness Ultraviolet Curable Polyethylene Terephthalates Surface Coatings Modified with Octavinyl-Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane

Amphiphilic Azo-Functionalized Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane; Synthesis and Photo-Switched Efficient Phase Transfer via Host-Guest Encapsulation

A new amphiphilic azo-functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) derivative was synthesized by functionalizing octa(3-aminopropyl)silsesquioxane (OAS-POSS) with 4-((4-(dodecyloxy)phenyl)diazenyl)benzoic acid, affording a hydrophilic amino POSS head and hydrophobic dodecyl tail with a diphenyl-azo connector. Prepared amphiphilic azo-functionalized POSS (azo-POSS) exhibited high ability for encapsulation and transferring cationic dyes into the organic phase by vigorously mixing with aqueous solutions of each dye. The photo-controlled encapsulating properties of the synthesized phase transfer reagent was studied using cationic dyes, such as methylene blue (MB), crystal violet (CV) and thymol blue in acidic conditions. Results showed more than 95 % encapsulation of MB. However, no considerable encapsulation was shown in the case of anionic dyes such as eriochrome black T (EBT) and thymol blue in alkaline solutions. By trans/cis isomerization of the azo moiety of the phase transfer reagent by UV irradiation (365 nm), the amount of dye encapsulation was decreased, which could be attributed to the formation of cis isomer that led to the folding of the dodecyl alkyl tail on the POSS moiety, and therefore prevent to lay the 3-aminopropyl moieties of POSS head to the water/DCM interface to adsorb and encapsulate MB molecules.

Enhanced Polymerization and Surface Hardness of Colloidal Siloxane Films via Electron Beam Irradiation

Electron beam (EB) curing is a foldable hard coating process and has attracted significant research attention in the field of flexible electronic devices. In this study, we report a method for enhancing material surface hardness with low-energy EB curing in a short time. The low-energy EB improved the coating hardness of films by inducing cross-linking polymerization of the silicon-containing monomer. The hardness of the cured coating layer was measured as 3 H using a pencil hardness tester, and the transparency of the coating was higher than 90%. Owing to a series of cross-linking reactions between Si-O-C and Si-OH groups under EB curing and the formation of Si-Si bonds, the cured layer exhibited remarkable durability in the 100000-flexible cycle test. Additionally, the natural oxidation of the C-O groups on the surface of the coating formed carboxyl groups that improved the hydrophilic properties of the coating layer. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to propose that the hardness of polyethylene terephthalate films can be improved using low-energy EBs to rapidly cure silicon-containing coatings. Our results provide a novel and commercially viable approach for improving the hardness of touch screens and foldable displays.

Indicator Layers Based on Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate Copolymer (EVA) and Dicyanovinyl Azobenzene Dyes for Fast and Selective Evaluation of Vaporous Biogenic Amines

The article presents naked-eye methods for fast, sensitive, and selective detection of isopentylamine and cadaverine vapours based on 4-N,N-dioctylamino-4'-dicyanovinylazobenzene (CR-528) and 4-N,N-dioctylamino-2'-nitro-4'-dicyanovinylazobenzene (CR-555) dyes immobilized in ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA). The reaction of CR-528/EVA and CR-555/EVA indicator layers with isopentylamine vapours caused a vivid colour change from pink/purple to yellow/orange-yellow. Additionally, CR-555/EVA showed colour changes upon exposure to cadaverine. The colour changes were analysed by ultraviolet⁻visible (UV/VIS) molecular absorption spectroscopy for amine quantification, and the method was partially validated for the detection limit, sensitivity, and linear concentration range. The lowest detection limits were reached with CR-555/EVA indicator layers (0.41 ppm for isopentylamine and 1.80 ppm for cadaverine). The indicator layers based on EVA and dicyanovinyl azobenzene dyes complement the existing library of colorimetric probes for the detection of biogenic amines and show great potential for food quality control.
