Growth without Postannealing of Monoclinic VO2 Thin Film by Atomic Layer Deposition Using VCl4 as Precursor

Conformal Zn-Benzene Dithiol Thin Films for Temperature-Sensitive Electronics Grown via Industry-Feasible Atomic/Molecular Layer Deposition Technique

The atomic/molecular layer deposition (ALD/MLD) technique combining both inorganic and organic precursors is strongly emerging as a unique tool to design exciting new functional metal-organic thin-film materials. Here, this method is demonstrated to work even at low deposition temperatures and can produce highly stable and conformal thin films, fulfilling the indispensable prerequisites of today's 3D microelectronics and other potential industrial applications. This new ALD/MLD process is developed for Zn-organic thin films grown from non-pyrophoric bis-3-(N,N-dimethylamino)propyl zinc [Zn(DMP)2] and 1,4-benzene dithiol (BDT) precursors. This process yields air-stable Zn-BDT films with appreciably high growth per cycle (GPC) of 4.5 Å at 60 °C. The Zn/S ratio is determined at 0.5 with Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS), in line with the anticipated (Zn─S─C6H6─S─)n bonding scheme. The high degree of conformality is shown using lateral high-aspect-ratio (LHAR) test substrates; scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis shows that the film penetration depth (PD) into the LHAR structure with cavity height of 500 nm is over 200 µm (i.e., aspect-ratio of 400). It is anticipated that the electrically insulating metal-organic Zn-BDT thin films grown via the solvent-free ALD/MLD technique, can be excellent barrier layers for temperature-sensitive and flexible electronic devices.

Detection of lung cancer metastasis from blood using L-MISC nanosensor: Targeting circulating metastatic cues for improved diagnosis

Metastatic lung cancers are considered one of the most clinically significant malignancies, comprising about 40% of deaths caused by cancers. Detection of lung cancer metastasis prior to symptomatic relapse is critical for timely diagnosis and clinical management. The onset of cancer metastasis is indicated by the manifestation of tumor-shed signatures from the primary tumor in peripheral circulation. A subset of this population, characterized as the metastasis-initiating stem cells, are capable of invasion, tumor initiation, and propagation of metastasis at distant sites. In this study, we have developed a SERS-functionalised L-MISC (Lung-Metastasis Initiating Stem Cells) nanosensor to accurately capture the trace levels of metastatic signatures directly from patient blood. We investigated the signatures of cancer stem cell enriched heterogenous population of primary and metastatic lung cancer cells to establish a metastatic profile unique to lung cancer. Multivariate statistical analyses revealed statistically significant differences in the molecular profiles of healthy, primary, and metastatic cell populations. The single-cell sensitivity of L-MISC nanosensor enabled a label-free detection of MISCs with high sensitivity and specificity. By employing a robust machine learning model, our diagnostic methodology can accurately detect metastatic lung cancer from not more than 5 μl of blood. A pilot validation of our study was carried out using clinical samples for the prediction of metastatic lung cancers resulting in 100% diagnostic sensitivity. The L-MISC nanosensor is a potential tool for highly rapid, non-invasive, and accurate diagnosis of lung cancer metastasis.

Super-resolution Raman imaging towards visualisation of nanoplastics

Confocal Raman imaging can potentially identify and visualise microplastics and nanoplastics, but the imaging lateral resolution is hampered by the diffraction of the laser, making it difficult to analyse nanoplastics that are smaller than the laser spot and the lateral resolution limit (λ/2NA). Fortunately, once a nanoplastic is scanned to collect the spectrum via a position/pixel array as a spectrum matrix, akin to a hyperspectral matrix, the nanoplastic can be imaged by mapping the spectrum intensity as a pattern that is transcended axially and can be fitted as a 2D Gaussian surface. The Gaussian fitting and image re-construction by deconvolution can precisely predict the nanoplastic's position and approximate size, and potentially enhance the signal intensity. Several algorithms are also employed to decode the spectrum matrix, to improve the Raman images before the subsequent image re-construction. Overall, general confocal microscopy can also break through the diffraction limit of the excitation light by using algorithms, resulting in super-resolution Raman imaging to capture nanoplastics.

Highly C-oriented (002) plane ZnO nanowires synthesis

Nanowires are widely used for energy harvesting, sensors, and solar cells. We report a study on the role of buffer layer in the growth of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires (NWs) synthesised by a chemical bath deposition (CBD) method. To control the thickness of the buffer layer, multilayer coatings corresponding to one layer (100 nm thick), three layers (300 nm thick), and six layers (600 nm thick) of ZnO sol-gel thin-films were used. The evolution of the morphology and structure of ZnO NWs was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, photoluminescence, and Raman spectroscopy. Highly C-oriented ZnO (002)-oriented NWs were obtained on both substrates, silicon and ITO, when the thickness of the buffer layer was increased. The role of ZnO sol-gel thin films used as a buffer layer for the growth of ZnO NWs with (002)-oriented grains also resulted in a significant change in surface morphology on both substrates. The successful deposition of ZnO NWs on a variety of substrates, as well as the promising results, open up a wide range of applications.

Human-Body-Temperature Triggerable Phase Transition of W-VO2@PEG Nanoprobes with Strong and Switchable NIR-II Absorption for Deep and Contrast-Enhanced Photoacoustic Imaging

The immense potential of temperature-responsive nanomaterials for use as contrast agents has propelled much recent research and development in the field of photoacoustic (PA) imaging, while the exorbitant transition temperature exceeding the human-tolerable range and the low reversibility of the reported temperature-sensitive nanosystems are still two severe issues that hinder effective imaging and long-term monitoring in practical applications. Herein, we propose a high-performing thermoresponsive polyethylene glycol-coated tungsten-doped vanadium dioxide (W-VO₂@PEG) nanoprobe (NP) with strong and switchable optical absorption in the near-infrared-II (NIR-II) biowindow (1000-1700 nm) near human-body temperature, to achieve deep and contrast-enhanced PA imaging. Our study shows that the PA signal amplitude of W-VO₂@PEG NPs at 1064 nm increases up to 260% when the temperature increases from 35 °C to 45 °C, with a signal fluctuation of less than 10% after 10 temperature cycles, therefore enabling great potential of "off-to-on" dynamic contrast-enhanced imaging capability in deep-seated tissues. Experiments on tissue-mimicking phantoms and in vitro chicken breast showed that, by levering the prepared W-VO₂@PEG NPs and dynamically modulating the temperature field with an external NIR optical stimulus, contrast-enhanced PA images of the target can be obtained with an imaging depth up to 1.5 cm. Furthermore, in vivo potential of the prepared thermoresponsive NPs for the detection and identification of deep-seated tumors by directly comparing to conventional "always on" NPs has been demonstrated. Our work will offer feasible guidance for the development of smart temperature-activatable PA NPs with improved imaging depth and imaging contrast.

Boron Nitride-Titania Mesoporous Film Heterostructures

The fabrication of optically active heterostructures in the shape of mesostructured thin films is a highly challenging task. It requires an integrated process to allow in one-step incorporating the two-dimensional materials within the mesoporous ordered host without disrupting the pore organization. Hexagonal boron nitride (BN) nanosheets have been successfully introduced into titania mesoporous films using a template-assisted sol-gel synthesis and evaporation-induced self-assembly. Two types of BN sheets have been used, with and without defects, to investigate the role of defects in heterostructure properties. It has been found that the defects increase the ultraviolet radiation A (UVA) absorbance and enhance the photocatalytic response of the film. The BN sheets are optically transparent and do not exhibit any photocatalytic property but contribute to anatase crystallization via heterogeneous nucleation.

Photoactive Titanium Dioxide Films with Embedded Gold Nanoparticles for Quantitative Determination of Mercury Traces in Humic Matter-Containing Freshwaters

Mercury detection in humic matter-containing natural waters is often associated with environmental harmful substances for sample preparation. Herein we report an approach based on photoactive titanium dioxide films with embedded gold nanoparticles (AuNP@TiO₂ dipstick) for chemical-free sample preparation and mercury preconcentration. For this purpose, AuNPs are immobilized onto a silicon wafer and further covered with a thin photoactive titanium dioxide layer. The AuNPs allow the preconcentration of Hg traces via amalgamation, while TiO₂ acts as a protective layer and, at the same time, as a photocatalyst for UV-C radiation-based sample pretreatment. Humic matter, often present in natural waters, forms stabile complexes with Hg and so hinders its preconcentration prior to detection, causing a minor recovery. This problem is solved here by irradiation during Hg preconcentration onto the photoactive dipstick, resulting in a limit of detection as low as 0.137 ng L^-1 using atomic fluorescence spectrometry (AFS). A 5 min preconcentration step is sufficient to obtain successful recovery of Hg traces from waters with up to 10 mg L^-1 DOC. The feasibility of the approach was demonstrated by the determination of Hg traces in Danube river water. The results show no significant differences in comparison with standard cold vapor-atomic fluorescence spectrometry (CV-AFS) measurements of the same sample. Hence, this new AuNP@TiO₂ dipstick provides a single-step sample preparation and preconcentration approach that combines sustainability with high analytical sensitivity and accuracy.

Thermochromic Behavior of VO2/Polymer Nanocomposites for Energy Saving Coatings

Vanadium dioxide (VO2) is a well-known thermochromic material that can potentially be used as a smart coating on glazing systems in order to regulate the internal temperature of buildings. Most growth techniques for VO2 demand high temperatures (>250 °C), making it impossible to comply with flexible (polymeric) substrates. To overcome this problem, hydrothermally synthesized VO2 particles may be dispersed in an appropriate matrix, leading to a thermochromic coating that can be applied on a substrate at a low temperature (<100 °C). In this work, we reported on the thermochromic properties of a VO2/Poly-Vinyl-Pyrrolidone (PVP) nanocomposite. More specifically, a fixed amount of VO2 particles was dispersed in different PVP quantities forming hybrids of various VO2/PVP molar ratios which were deposited as films on fused silica glass substrates by utilizing the drop-casting method. The crystallite size was calculated and found to be 35 nm, almost independent of the PVP concentration. As far as the thermochromic characteristics are concerned, the molar ratio of the VO2/PVP nanocomposite producing VO2 films with the optimum thermochromic properties was 0.8. These films exhibited integral solar transmittance modulation (overall wavelengths) ΔTrsol = 0.35%–1.7%, infrared (IR) switching at 2000 nm ΔTrIR = 10%, visible transmittance at 550 nm TrVis = 38%, critical transition temperature TC = 66.8 °C, and width of transmittance hysteresis loop ΔTC = 6.8 °C. Moreover, the critical transition temperature was observed to slightly shift depending on the VO2/PVP molar ratio.
