Abstract
Three new molecular complexes (phen)3(2-amino-Bz)2(H+)(BF4-)·3H2O 5, (phen)3(2-amino-5(6)-methyl-Bz)2(H+)(BF4-)·H2O 6, and (phen)(1-methyl-2-amino-Bz)(H+)(BF4-) 7, were prepared by self-assembly of 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) and various substituted 2-aminobenzimidazoles. Confirmation of their structures was established through spectroscopic methods and elemental analysis. The X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the crystal structure of 7 is stabilized by the formation of hydrogen bonds and short contacts. In addition, the molecular geometry and electron structure of molecules 5 and 6 were theoretically evaluated using density functional theory (DFT) methods. According to the DFT B3LYP/6-311+G* calculations, the protonated benzimidazole (Bz) units act as NH hydrogen bond donors, binding two phenanthrolines and a BF4- ion. Non-protonated Bz unit form hydrogen bonds with the N-atoms of a third molecule phen. The molecular assembly is held together by π-π stacking between benzimidazole and phenanthroline rings, allowing for N-atoms to associate with water molecules. The complexes were tested in vitro for their tumor cell growth inhibitory effects on prostate (PC3), breast (MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7), and cervical (HeLa) cancer cell lines using MTT-dye reduction assay. The in vitro cytotoxicity analysis and spectrophotometric investigation in the presence of ct-DNA, showed that self-assembled molecules 5-7 are promising DNA-binding anticancer agents warranting further in-depth exploration.

Abstract
Commonly, iron(ii) and copper(i) complexes bind dioxygen (O2) and then activate O2 through a reductive reaction pathway. There is, however, significant interest in low temperature oxygenation with O2 without the use of a sacrificial reductant. Here, earth-abundant metal complexes (FeII, CoII, NiII and CuII) coordinated by two different tetra-dentate mono-carbon bridged bis-phenanthroline ligands, (1,10-Phen)2-2,2'-CR1R2, where R1 = n-butyl and R2 = n-butyl or H were synthesized. The structures all showed the expected metal complexation in the equatorial plane by the bridged bis-phenanthroline ligands. For R1 = n-butyl; R2 = H, where the ligand has a tertiary carbon bridging group, fast intramolecular oxygenation occurred at the pseudobenzylic position. Depending on the transition metal the main products formed were oxygen bridged dimers of the metal complexes (Co and Fe) or metal complexes with a carbonyl moiety at the bridging pseudobenzylic position as a result of C-R1 bond cleavage (Ni and Cu). The different product assemblages are explained by different reaction pathways that are metal specific. For quaternary carbon bridged ligands, R1 = R2 = n-butyl, the complexes catalytically activated C-H bonds of cyclohexene under catalytic conditions, showing higher effective turnover numbers at low catalyst loading. The reactivity observed is commensurate with a room temperature autooxidation reaction although the initiation of the free radical reaction is metal specific. In general labelling studies with 18O2, UV-vis and EPR spectroscopy as well as cyclic voltammetry measurements led to a conclusion that the reaction pathways involved both C-H bond activation and O2 activation.

Abstract
Abstract
The first mixed germanato-antimonato derivative of the {V14E8O42} (E=semi-metal) cluster archetype has been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and isolated as {Ni(phen)3}2[α-VIV
14SbIII
5GeIV
3O42(OH)3(H2O)]· ≈16H2O (phen=1,10-phenanthroline). In the cluster anion, seven of the eight hetero-metal positions are occupied by disordered Ge/Sb atoms, while one position is fully occupied by Sb atoms. The [V14Sb5Ge3O42(OH)3(H2O)]6− anions are arranged in pairs with remarkably short inter-cluster Sb···O contacts. Bond valence sum calculation strongly suggests that the Sb···O contact must be taken into account as a weak bond. The magnetic properties are dominated by strong intra-cluster antiferromagnetic exchange interactions, and the cluster anion is magnetically quasi-isolated from the spins of the Ni2+ complex cations.
