Packing of Helices: Is Chirality the Highest Crystallographic Symmetry?

Revisiting Homochiral versus Heterochiral Interactions through a Long Detective Story of a Useful Azobis-Nitrile and Puzzling Racemate

This paper documents and reinvestigates the solid-state and crystal structures of 4,4'-azobis-4-cyanopentanoic acid (ACPA), a water-soluble azobis-nitrile of immense utility as a radical initiator in living polymerizations and a labile mechanophore that can be embedded within long polymer chains to undergo selective scission under mechanical activation. Surprisingly, for such applications, both the commercially available reagent and their derivatives are used as "single initiators" when this azonitrile is actually a mixture of stereoisomers. Although the racemate and meso compounds were identified more than half a century ago and their enantiomers were separated by classical resolution, there have been confusing narratives dealing with their characterization, the existence of a conglomeratic phase, and fractional crystallization. Our results report on the X-ray crystal structures of all stereoisomers for the first time, along with further details on enantiodiscrimination and the always intriguing arguments accounting for the stability of homochiral versus heterochiral crystal aggregates. To this end, metadynamic (MTD) simulations on stereoisomer molecular aggregates were performed to capture the incipient nucleation events at the picosecond time scale. This analysis sheds light on the driving homochiral aggregation of ACPA enantiomers.

Prediction of Large Second Harmonic Generation in the Metal-Oxide/Organic Hybrid Compound CuMoO3(p2c)

Noncentrosymmetric hybrid framework (HF) materials are an important system in discovering new practical second-order nonlinear optical materials. We calculated the second harmonic generation (SHG) response of a noncentrosymmetric (NCS) organic–inorganic HF compound, CuMoO3(p2c) (p2c = pyrazine-2-carboxylate) to find that it exhibits the largest SHG response among all known NCS HF materials with one-dimensional helical chains. Further atom response theory analysis revealed that the metal atoms Cu and Mo contribute much more strongly than do nonmetal atoms in determining the strength of the SHG response, which is a novel example in nonlinear optical materials known to date.

Superhelical DNA liquid crystals from dendrimer-induced DNA compaction

Electrostatic compaction of double stranded DNA induced by a positively charged poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimer of generation four (G4) was found to produce two unique types of DNA mesophases, in which the DNA bent into superhelices packed in a tetragonal or hexagonal lattice. The structure formed at a lower dendrimer charge density was three-dimensionally (3D) ordered, as characterized by the P4₁2₁2 space group with a 4₁ screw axis in a tetragonal arrangement, showing that the weakly bent DNA superhelices with a pitch length of ca. 5.0 nm possessed both identical handedness and phase conservation. The 3D ordered structure transformed into a 2D mesophase at a higher dendrimer charge density, wherein the strongly bent superhelices with a pitch length of ca. 4.0 nm organized in a hexagonal lattice without lateral coherence of helical trajectory. The counterion valency of the protonic acid that is used to charge the dendrimer was found to influence the phase diagram. Under a given dendrimer charge density, the complex with a multivalent acid-protonated dendrimer tended to form structures with less curved DNA, attesting that the driving force of charge matching was reduced by increasing the counterion valency of the dendrimer.

Crystal structures of three copper(II)-2,2'-bi-pyridine (bpy) compounds, [Cu(bpy)2(H2O)][SiF6]·4H2O, [Cu(bpy)2(TaF6)2] and [Cu(bpy)3][TaF6]2 and a related coordination polymer, [Cu(bpy)(H2O)2SnF6] n

We report the hydro-thermal syntheses and crystal structures of aqua-bis-(2,2'-bi-pyridine-κ2 N,N')copper(II) hexa-fluorido-silicate tetra-hydrate, [Cu(bpy)2(H2O)][SiF6]·4H2O (bpy is 2,2'-bi-pyridine, C10H8N2), (I), bis-(2,2'-bi-pyridine-3κ2 N,N')-di-μ-fluorido-1:3κ2 F:F;2:3κ2 F:F-deca-fluorido-1κ5 F,2κ5 F-ditantalum(V)copper(II), [Cu(bpy)2(TaF6)2], (II), tris-(2,2'-bi-pyridine-κ2 N,N')copper(II) bis[hexa-fluorido-tantalate(V)], [Cu(bpy)3][TaF6]2, (III), and catena-poly[[di-aqua-(2,2'-bi-pyridine-κ2 N,N')copper(II)]-μ-fluorido-tetra-fluorido-tin-μ-fluorido], [Cu(bpy)(H2O)2SnF6] n , (IV). Compounds (I), (II) and (III) contain locally chiral copper coordination complexes with C 2, D 2, and D 3 symmetry, respectively. The extended structures of (I) and (IV) are consolidated by O-H⋯F and O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds. The structure of (III) was found to be a merohedral (racemic) twin.
