QUCoughScope: An Intelligent Application to Detect COVID-19 Patients Using Cough and Breath Sounds

TO-LAB model: Real time Touchless Lung Abnormality detection model using USRP based machine learning algorithm

BACKGROUND

Due to the increasing prevalence of respiratory diseases and the importance of early diagnosis. The need for non-invasive and touchless medical diagnostic solutions has become increasingly crucial in modern healthcare to detect lung abnormalities.

OBJECTIVE

Existing methods for lung abnormality detection often rely on invasive and time-consuming procedures limiting their effectiveness in real-time diagnosis. This work introduces a novel Touchless Lung Abnormality (TO-LAB) detection model utilizing universal software radio peripherals (USRP) and machine learning algorithms.

METHODS

The TO-LAB model integrates a blood pressure meter and an RGB-D depth-sensing camera to gather individual data without physical contact. Heart rate (HR) is analyzed through image conversion to IPPG signals, while blood pressure (BP) is obtained via analog conversion from the blood pressure meter. This touchless imaging setup facilitates the extraction of essential signal features crucial for respiratory pattern analysis. Advanced computer vision algorithms like Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) process the acquired data to focus on breathing abnormalities. These features are then combined and inputted into a machine learning-based Multi-class SVM for breathing activity analysis. The Multi-class SVM categorizes breathing abnormalities as normal, shallow, or elevated based on the fused features. The efficiency of this TO-LAB model is evaluated with the simulated and real-time data.

RESULTS

According to the findings, the proposed TO-LAB model attains the maximum accuracy of 96.15% for real time data; however, the accuracy increases to 99.54% for simulated data for the efficient classification of breathing abnormalities.

CONCLUSION

From this analysis, our model attains better results in simulated data but it declines the accuracy while processing with real-time data. Moreover, this work has a significant medical impact since it presents a solution to the problem of gathering enough data during the epidemic to create a realistic model with a large dataset.

Towards classification and comprehensive analysis of AI-based COVID-19 diagnostic techniques: A survey

The unpredictable pandemic came to light at the end of December 2019, known as the novel coronavirus, also termed COVID-19, identified by the World Health Organization (WHO). The virus first originated in Wuhan (China) and rapidly affected most of the world's population. This outbreak's impact is experienced worldwide because it causes high mortality risk, many cases, and economic falls. Around the globe, the total number of cases and deaths reported till November 12, 2022, were >600 million and 6.6 million, respectively. During the period of COVID-19, several diverse diagnostic techniques have been proposed. This work presents a systematic review of COVID-19 diagnostic techniques in response to such acts. Initially, these techniques are classified into different categories based on their working principle and detection modalities, i.e. chest X-ray imaging, cough sound or respiratory patterns, RT-PCR, antigen testing, and antibody testing. After that, a comparative analysis is performed to evaluate these techniques' efficacy which may help to determine an optimum solution for a particular scenario. The findings of the proposed work show that Artificial Intelligence plays a vital role in developing COVID-19 diagnostic techniques which support the healthcare system. The related work can be a footprint for all the researchers, available under a single umbrella. Additionally, all the techniques are long-lasting and can be used for future pandemics.

Omicron detection with large language models and YouTube audio data

Publicly available audio data presents a unique opportunity for the development of digital health technologies with large language models (LLMs). In this study, YouTube was mined to collect audio data from individuals with self-declared positive COVID-19 tests as well as those with other upper respiratory infections (URI) and healthy subjects discussing a diverse range of topics. The resulting dataset was transcribed with the Whisper model and used to assess the capacity of LLMs for detecting self-reported COVID-19 cases and performing variant classification. Following prompt optimization, LLMs achieved accuracies of 0.89, 0.97, respectively, in the tasks of identifying self-reported COVID-19 cases and other respiratory illnesses. The model also obtained a mean accuracy of 0.77 at identifying the variant of self-reported COVID-19 cases using only symptoms and other health-related factors described in the YouTube videos. In comparison with past studies, which used scripted, standardized voice samples to capture biomarkers, this study focused on extracting meaningful information from public online audio data. This work introduced novel design paradigms for pandemic management tools, showing the potential of audio data in clinical and public health applications.

Kidney Cancer Diagnosis and Surgery Selection by Machine Learning from CT Scans Combined with Clinical Metadata

Kidney cancers are one of the most common malignancies worldwide. Accurate diagnosis is a critical step in the management of kidney cancer patients and is influenced by multiple factors including tumor size or volume, cancer types and stages, etc. For malignant tumors, partial or radical surgery of the kidney might be required, but for clinicians, the basis for making this decision is often unclear. Partial nephrectomy could result in patient death due to cancer if kidney removal was necessary, whereas radical nephrectomy in less severe cases could resign patients to lifelong dialysis or need for future transplantation without sufficient cause. Using machine learning to consider clinical data alongside computed tomography images could potentially help resolve some of these surgical ambiguities, by enabling a more robust classification of kidney cancers and selection of optimal surgical approaches. In this study, we used the publicly available KiTS dataset of contrast-enhanced CT images and corresponding patient metadata to differentiate four major classes of kidney cancer: clear cell (ccRCC), chromophobe (chRCC), papillary (pRCC) renal cell carcinoma, and oncocytoma (ONC). We rationalized these data to overcome the high field of view (FoV), extract tumor regions of interest (ROIs), classify patients using deep machine-learning models, and extract/post-process CT image features for combination with clinical data. Regardless of marked data imbalance, our combined approach achieved a high level of performance (85.66% accuracy, 84.18% precision, 85.66% recall, and 84.92% F1-score). When selecting surgical procedures for malignant tumors (RCC), our method proved even more reliable (90.63% accuracy, 90.83% precision, 90.61% recall, and 90.50% F1-score). Using feature ranking, we confirmed that tumor volume and cancer stage are the most relevant clinical features for predicting surgical procedures. Once fully mature, the approach we propose could be used to assist surgeons in performing nephrectomies by guiding the choices of optimal procedures in individual patients with kidney cancer.

Deep learning approach for early prediction of COVID-19 mortality using chest X-ray and electronic health records

BACKGROUND

An artificial-intelligence (AI) model for predicting the prognosis or mortality of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients will allow efficient allocation of limited medical resources. We developed an early mortality prediction ensemble model for COVID-19 using AI models with initial chest X-ray and electronic health record (EHR) data.

RESULTS

We used convolutional neural network (CNN) models (Inception-ResNet-V2 and EfficientNet) for chest X-ray analysis and multilayer perceptron (MLP), Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), and random forest (RF) models for EHR data analysis. The Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping and Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) methods were used to determine the effects of these features on COVID-19. We developed an ensemble model (Area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.8698) using a soft voting method with weight differences for CNN, XGBoost, MLP, and RF models. To resolve the data imbalance, we conducted F1-score optimization by adjusting the cutoff values to optimize the model performance (F1 score of 0.77).

CONCLUSIONS

Our study is meaningful in that we developed an early mortality prediction model using only the initial chest X-ray and EHR data of COVID-19 patients. Early prediction of the clinical courses of patients is helpful for not only treatment but also bed management. Our results confirmed the performance improvement of the ensemble model achieved by combining AI models. Through the SHAP method, laboratory tests that indicate the factors affecting COVID-19 mortality were discovered, highlighting the importance of these tests in managing COVID-19 patients.

A novel deep learning model to detect COVID-19 based on wavelet features extracted from Mel-scale spectrogram of patients' cough and breathing sounds

The goal of this paper is to classify the various cough and breath sounds of COVID-19 artefacts in the signals from dynamic real-life environments. The main reason for choosing cough and breath sounds than other common symptoms to detect COVID-19 patients from the comfort of their homes, so that they do not overload the Medicare system and therefore do not unwittingly spread the disease by regularly monitoring themselves. The presented model includes two main phases. The first phase is the sound-to-image transformation, which is improved by the Mel-scale spectrogram approach. The second phase consists of extraction of features and classification using nine deep transfer models (ResNet18/34/50/100/101, GoogLeNet, SqueezeNet, MobileNetv2, and NasNetmobile). The dataset contains information data from almost 1600 people (1185 Male and 415 Female) from all over the world. Our classification model is the most accurate, its accuracy is 99.2% according to the SGDM optimizer. The accuracy is good enough that a large set of labelled cough and breath data may be used to check the possibility for generalization. The results demonstrate that ResNet18 is the best stable model for classifying cough and breath tones from a restricted dataset, with a sensitivity of 98.3% and a specificity of 97.8%. Finally, the presented model is shown to be more trustworthy and accurate than any other present model. Cough and breath study accuracy is promising enough to put extrapolation and generalization to the test.

Visual Detection of COVID-19 from Materials Aspect

Abstract

In the recent COVID-19 pandemic, World Health Organization emphasized that early detection is an effective strategy to reduce the spread of SARS-CoV-2 viruses. Several diagnostic methods, such as reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA), have been applied based on the mechanism of specific recognition and binding of the probes to viruses or viral antigens. Although the remarkable progress, these methods still suffer from inadequate cellular materials or errors in the detection and sampling procedure of nasopharyngeal/oropharyngeal swab collection. Therefore, developing accurate, ultrafast, and visualized detection calls for more advanced materials and technology urgently to fight against the epidemic. In this review, we first summarize the current methodologies for SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis. Then, recent representative examples are introduced based on various output signals (e.g., colorimetric, fluorometric, electronic, acoustic). Finally, we discuss the limitations of the methods and provide our perspectives on priorities for future test development.
