Anti-Icing Superhydrophobic Surfaces: Controlling Entropic Molecular Interactions to Design Novel Icephobic Concrete

Mechanism of self-recovery of hydrophobicity after surface damage of lotus leaf

The surfaces of lotus leaves with micro- and nano-waxy cuticle structures are superhydrophobic and possess a self-healing ability to regain hydrophobicity after damage. Inspired by this phenomenon, the problem of water-repellent coatings used in natural environments failing to perform after damage can be solved if these coatings are endowed with rapid self-repair and self-growth functions. However, there has been almost no exploration into the hydrophobicity self-repair process in lotus leaves. The changes in surface morphology during the hydrophobicity recovery process are not understood. There is a lack of research on the hydrophobicity recovery in lotus leaves. In this study, the damage and recovery experiments on lotus leaf surfaces were carried out in an artificial climate chamber, and the water repellency recovery process and typical water repellency roughness parameters regained time were obtained. Upon analyzing the differences in the recovery process of different damage types, the recovery mechanism after lotus leaf surface damage was obtained. Finally, it was found that the microscopic roughness determined the static contact angle (WCA) of the lotus leaf surface, and the nanoscopic roughness determined the rolling angle (SA). The dual factors of the recovery of the extruded epidermal tissue and the regeneration of the epidermal wax crystals determined the hydrophobicity recovery process in damaged lotus leaves.

A review of high internal phase Pickering emulsions: Stabilization, rheology, and 3D printing application

High internal phase Pickering emulsion (HIPPE) is renowned for its exceptionally high-volume fraction of internal phase, leading to flocculated yet deformed emulsion droplets and unique rheological behaviors such as shear-thinning property, viscoelasticity, and thixotropic recovery. Alongside the inherent features of regular emulsion systems, such as large interfacial area and well-mixture of two immiscible liquids, the HIPPEs have been emerging as building blocks to construct three-dimensional (3D) scaffolds with customized structures and programmable functions using an extrusion-based 3D printing technique, making 3D-printed HIPPE-based scaffolds attract widespread interest from various fields such as food science, biotechnology, environmental science, and energy transfer. Herein, the recent advances in preparing suitable HIPPEs as 3D printing inks for various applied fields are reviewed. This work begins with the stabilization mechanism of HIPPEs, followed by introducing the origin of their distinctive rheological behaviors and strategies to adjust the rheological behaviors to prepare more eligible HIPPEs as printing inks. Then, the compatibility between extrusion-based 3D printing and HIPPEs as building blocks was discussed, followed by a summary of the potential applications using 3D-printed HIPPE-based scaffolds. Finally, limitations and future perspectives on preparing HIPPE-based materials using extrusion-based 3D printing were presented.

Preparation methods and research progress of super-hydrophobic anti-icing surface

The problem of surface icing poses a serious threat to people's economy and safety, especially in the fields of aerospace, wind power generation and circuit transmission. Super-hydrophobic has excellent anti-icing performance, so it has been widely studied. As the most promising anti-icing technology, superhydrophobic anti-icing surface should not only be simple to prepare, but also have excellent comprehensive performance, which can meet the anti-icing task under harsh working conditions and long-term durability. This paper summarizes the basic performance requirements of superhydrophobic surface for anti-icing operation, and then summarizes the preparation methods and existing problems of superhydrophobic surface in recent years. Finally, the future development trend of superhydrophobic anti-icing surface is prospected and discussed, hoping to provide certain technical guidance for the subsequent research of high-performance superhydrophobic anti-icing surface.

Cyclic Voltammetry for Accurate Icing Detection on Simulated Aircraft Surfaces

Icing and ice accretion on aerodynamically critical surfaces of an aircraft increase drag, reduce lift, and raise stalling speed, which pose significant safety hazards to aircraft while in flight. Icephobic coatings have been intensively investigated by the Canadian and global aerospace industries for passive ice protection. Nevertheless, effective icephobic coatings suitable for aerospace applications are far from ideal. Ice protection of an aircraft still relies on active ice protection systems based on heating, mechanical expulsion, and deicing fluids, which are heavy-weight, power-intensive, and unfriendly to the environment. To address these challenges, rapid and accurate detection of icing is highly desirable to activate these ice protection systems only when needed. To this end, cyclic voltammetry was used for the first time to detect the initiation of icing on aircraft surfaces with or without icephobic coatings. In this study, a water droplet was sandwiched between a screen-printed electrode and a simulated aircraft surface. Cyclic voltammograms were then collected as the temperature was slowly decreased until the droplet froze to form ice. A sharp spike in faradaic current was recorded in the voltammograms during the phase transition, suggesting a switch in the mass transfer mechanism from diffusion to a surface-confined pathway. This electrochemical signal could then be used to precisely indicate the onset of icing. The developed sensing method shows potential in icing detection to manage active ice protections and ameliorate icing risks in the aerospace and aviation industries.

Interdependence of Surface Roughness on Icephobic Performance: A Review

Ice protection techniques have attracted significant interest, notably in aerospace and wind energy applications. However, the current solutions are mostly costly and inconvenient due to energy-intensive and environmental concerns. One of the appealing strategies is the use of passive icephobicity, in the form of coatings, which is induced by means of several material strategies, such as hydrophobicity, surface texturing, surface elasticity, and the physical infusion of ice-depressing liquids, etc. In this review, surface-roughness-related icephobicity is critically discussed to understand the challenges and the role of roughness, especially on superhydrophobic surfaces. Surface roughness as an intrinsic, independent surface property for anti-icing and de-icing performance is also debated, and their interdependence is explained using the related physical mechanisms and thermodynamics of ice nucleation. Furthermore, the role of surface roughness in the case of elastomeric or low-modulus polymeric coatings, which typically instigate an easy release of ice, is examined. In addition to material-centric approaches, the influence of surface roughness in de-icing evaluation is also explored, and a comparative assessment is conducted to understand the testing sensitivity to various surface characteristics. This review exemplifies that surface roughness plays a crucial role in incorporating and maintaining icephobic performance and is intrinsically interlinked with other surface-induced icephobicity strategies, including superhydrophobicity and elastomeric surfaces. Furthermore, the de-icing evaluation methods also appear to be roughness sensitive in a certain range, indicating a dominant role of mechanically interlocked ice.

Influence of a Nano-Hydrophobic Admixture on Concrete Durability and Steel Corrosion

Steel corrosion is major reason of the deterioration of reinforced concrete structures. Decreasing the transportation of erosion ions in concrete is one of effective methods to protect the steel from corrosion. In the present work, a novel nano-hydrophobic admixture is introduced to improve the ion-diffusion properties and the corrosion resistance of reinforced steel. Compared with unmodified concrete, the nano-hydrophobic admixture effectively decreases the water adsorption, water evaporation, and chloride ions transport in a concrete structure, and then improved the concrete's durability. The concrete's water adsorption decreased more than 78%, and the initial corrosion time of reinforced steel is prolonged more than one time by treatment with the nano-hydrophobic admixture. The inhibition penetration of the medium in concrete modified by hydrophobic nanoparticles is the key to provide the protective properties of steel reinforcement from chloride erosion.

Cold Spray: Over 30 Years of Development Toward a Hot Future

Cold Spray (CS) is a deposition process, part of the thermal spray family. In this method, powder particles are accelerated at supersonic speed within a nozzle; impacts against a substrate material triggers a complex process, ultimately leading to consolidation and bonding. CS, in its modern form, has been around for approximately 30 years and has undergone through exciting and unprecedented developmental steps. In this article, we have summarized the key inventions and sub-inventions which pioneered the innovation aspect to the process that is known today, and the key breakthroughs related to the processing of materials CS is currently mastering. CS has not followed a liner path since its invention, but an evolution more similar to a hype cycle: high initial growth of expectations, followed by a decrease in interest and a renewed thrust pushed by a number of demonstrated industrial applications. The process interest is expected to continue (gently) to grow, alongside with further development of equipment and feedstock materials specific for CS processing. A number of current applications have been identified the areas that the process is likely to be the most disruptive in the medium-long term future have been laid down.

Effects of Discontinuous Thermal Conductivity of a Substrate Surface on Ice Adhesion Strength

This study proposes a novel anti-icing model in which silicone rubber with low thermal conductivity is coated at different positions on a material surface to change the continuity of the thermal conductivity of the surface. During the test, the surfaces of aluminum alloy and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) are discontinuously coated with silicone rubber. Repeated experiments are conducted to verify the anti-icing effect of the proposed model. Results showed that compared to the conventional surface ice adhesion strength, the rate of reduction of the ice adhesion strength of the aluminum alloy and PMMA could reach 75.07% and 76.70%, respectively, when the novel method is used. Because of the different levels of thermal conductivity at different positions on the material surface, the water attached to the surface locations without the coated silicone rubber had other freezing times. Combined with the heat and phase change of water during the freezing process, changing the stability of the interface between the ice and substrate could act as an active anti-icing power. The ice adhesion strength on the material surface could then be reduced. Compared with the conventional anti-icing methods, the anti-icing method proposed in this study could significantly increase the active anti-icing characteristics of the material and provide a novel anti-icing method for use in engineering applications.

The Influence of a Novel Hydrophobic Agent on the Internal Defect and Multi-Scale Pore Structure of Concrete

In high humidity areas, it is necessary to improve the impermeability of concrete to water and other erosion solutions. The internal defect and pore channel of concrete are the main factors affecting the impermeability and durability. In this paper, a novel hydrophobic agent named Yellow River Engineering Consulting (YREC) was prepared. The relative internal defect degree of concrete with different curing ages and YREC contents was evaluated by ultrasonic non-destructive testing as qualitative characterization method, and the effect of YREC on hydration reaction was investigates using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). Water permeability and contact angle tests were used to analyze the internal and external hydrophobicity induced by YREC addition, respectively. The pore structure changes of concrete mortar matrix induced by YREC were further discussed applying low-temperature liquid nitrogen adsorption (LT-NA) and mercury intrusion/extrusion porosimetry (MIP). The results indicated that YREC not only improves the impermeability of water, but also greatly enhances the mechanical strength. In the case of mixing YREC, the porosity of concrete mortar matrix decreases accompanied with the more advantage pores (micropores and transition pores) developed. Based on the relative internal defect degree and the changes of multi-scale pore structure, the functionality and durability of concrete with 4% YREC addition are the most desirable.

Microstructure control of the wettability and adhesion of Al alloy surfaces

This article provides a simple and fast method to adjust the wettability and adhesion of aluminum (Al) alloy surfaces after electric discharge machining (EDM). For an Al alloy plate after EDM, without any grinding and polishing, laser treatment was directly performed on the surface to prepare the Al alloy surface with different wettability and adhesion behaviors. Scanning electron microscopy was used to analyze the surface morphologies of the smooth surface, wire-cut surface, and the surface treated with different laser parameters after wire-cut. Then, the chemical composition, contact angle (CA) stability, adhesion and surface bounce behavior of the surfaces processed via different treatment steps were tested and analyzed. The results indicated that the crater structure was distributed randomly on the EDM-processed surface, with a static CA of 129 ± 1.2°. After laser engraving, the surface generates a regular arrangement of micron-level grooves/pits. Meanwhile, the molten Al alloy spattered at high temperatures and instantly solidified to produce sub-micron-sized metal particles attached to the pit/bottom of the trench and the unprocessed area, naturally forming a dual-scale structure. This naturally formed dual-scale structure makes the surface static CA up to 154.6 ± 1.2°. This technology realized that only laser treatment is used to control the wettability and adhesion of the Al alloy surface after EDM treatment and expected to provide a simple and low-cost method for the practical application of large-area superhydrophobic surfaces.

Clarifying the Correlation of Ice Adhesion Strength with Water Wettability and Surface Characteristics

Although icephobic surfaces have been extensively investigated in the past decades, a controversy remains on the relationship between water repellency and ice repellency. Little insight has been truly obtained on the dependence of ice adhesion on the surface/interface characteristics because of the limited range of these characteristics that have been investigated in the past. In this study, we prepared 37 coatings with a wide range of surface characteristics. The measured ice adhesion strength was discussed in correlation with water wettability and surface topological parameters. It was verified that parameters related to water wettability, such as water contact angle, contact angle hysteresis, and an index of work of adhesion with water, (1 + cos θ_rec), do not have a simple correlation with ice adhesion strength. Thus, they should not be used as a design parameter for low icephobic surfaces. The current study points out that the study of surface texture should be carried out in conjunction with surface chemistry/energy consideration. Without control of the surface chemistry, the correlation between surface texture parameters will lead to inconsistent conclusions because of the uncertainty of the contact mode. Our investigation indicates that low ice adhesion strength (<50 kPa) is attainable with a smooth surface (root-mean-squared roughness < 50 nm) when a low surface energy (<15 mJ/m²) is maintained. This finding opens a new paradigm for the design of icephobic coatings away from the conventional practices of using superhydrophobic and oil-infused surfaces.

Scaling in Colloidal and Biological Networks

Scaling and dimensional analysis is applied to networks that describe various physical systems. Some of these networks possess fractal, scale-free, and small-world properties. The amount of information contained in a network is found by calculating its Shannon entropy. First, we consider networks arising from granular and colloidal systems (small colloidal and droplet clusters) due to pairwise interaction between the particles. Many networks found in colloidal science possess self-organizing properties due to the effect of percolation and/or self-organized criticality. Then, we discuss the allometric laws in branching vascular networks, artificial neural networks, cortical neural networks, as well as immune networks, which serve as a source of inspiration for both surface engineering and information technology. Scaling relationships in complex networks of neurons, which are organized in the neocortex in a hierarchical manner, suggest that the characteristic time constant is independent of brain size when interspecies comparison is conducted. The information content, scaling, dimensional, and topological properties of these networks are discussed.

Recent Advances in Hydrophobic and Icephobic Surface Treatments of Concrete

In this review, we present a survey on hydrophobic surface treatments of concrete, important protection tools against deterioration and corrosion phenomena. In the frame of a standardized distinction in coatings, pore blockage, and impregnation methods, we highlight the huge variety of compounds and formulations utilized, and the different performances reached in terms of water contact angle, water absorption, chloride penetration, and, rarely reported, anti-icing/icephobic action. Our view covers the spectrum of the surface treatments, but also makes a comparison with hydrophobic bulk modifications of concrete, procedures often utilized as well; further, novel proposals of more sustainable routes are presented. We note that coating and impregnation, preferably when based on polyurethane and silane/siloxane, respectively, appear more effective against water ingress. The achieved wetting character is hydrophobic or, at most, overhydrophobic. Superhydrophobic coatings for concrete have been obtained by embedding nano-powders in hydrophobic emulsions, allowing to add a nanotexture to the preexisting complex roughness of the material. Concrete treated with this type of coating has also recently shown a pronounced icephobic character, a parameter that goes beyond the freeze–thaw characterization usually conducted on cement-based materials.

From Extremely Water-Repellent Coatings to Passive Icing Protection—Principles, Limitations and Innovative Application Aspects

The severe environmental conditions in winter seasons and/or cold climate regions cause many inconveniences in our routine daily-life, related to blocked road infrastructure, interrupted overhead telecommunication, internet and high-voltage power lines or cancelled flights due to excessive ice and snow accumulation. With the tremendous and nature-inspired development of physical, chemical and engineering sciences in the last few decades, novel strategies for passively combating the atmospheric and condensation icing have been put forward. The primary objective of this review is to reveal comprehensively the major physical mechanisms regulating the ice accretion on solid surfaces and summarize the most important scientific breakthroughs in the field of functional icephobic coatings. Following this framework, the present article introduces the most relevant concepts used to understand the incipiency of ice nuclei at solid surfaces and the pathways of water freezing, considers the criteria that a given material has to meet in order to be labelled as icephobic and clarifies the modus operandi of superhydrophobic (extremely water-repellent) coatings for passive icing protection. Finally, the limitations of existing superhydrophobic/icephobic materials, various possibilities for their unconventional practical applicability in cryobiology and some novel hybrid anti-icing systems are discussed in detail.

Superhydrophobic Civil Engineering Materials: A Review from Recent Developments

Superhydrophobic surfaces have drawn attention from scientists and engineers because of their extreme water repellency. More interestingly, these surfaces have also demonstrated an infinite influence on civil engineering materials. In this feature article, the history of wettability theory is described firstly. The approaches to construct hierarchical micro/nanostructures such as chemical vapor deposition (CVD), electrochemical, etching, and flame synthesis methods are introduced. Then, the advantages and limitations of each method are discussed. Furthermore, the recent progress of superhydrophobicity applied on civil engineering materials and its applications are summarized. Finally, the obstacles and prospects of superhydrophobic civil engineering materials are stated and expected. This review should be of interest to scientists and civil engineers who are interested in superhydrophobic surfaces and novel civil engineering materials.

Simple Fabrication of Concrete with Remarkable Self-Cleaning Ability, Robust Superhydrophobicity, Tailored Porosity, and Highly Thermal and Sound Insulation

Self-cleaning materials have attracted immense commercial and academic interests in recent years. A major challenge is the scalable and cost-effective fabrication of three-dimensional bulk materials with remarkable self-cleaning and a desirable combination of tailored porosity, robust superhydrophobicity, excellent mechanical strength, heat insulation, and sound absorption ability. Here, self-cleaning concrete was achieved in one step through the combination of the liquid template pore formation and in situ bulk hydrophobic modification. The concrete exhibited superhydrophobicity with a high water contact angle of 166° both on the surface and inside of the sample, which qualified the sample with remarkable stain repellency and long-term stability. The water contact angle remained unchanged under continuous mechanical grinding and harsh environments, such as high temperature (450 °C in air and 650 °C in Ar) and chemical erosion. The concrete with a controllable porosity from 56.3 to 77.4% and homogeneous small pore size (∼15 μm) exhibited high compressive strength and low thermal conductivity. Furthermore, high sound absorption capacity (97%, 500 Hz) at a vibration frequency from 400 to 600 Hz was realized. With these excellent performances and characteristics and easy scalable fabrication, the concrete prepared in this work possessed a wide application prospect.

Icephobic Strategies and Materials with Superwettability: Design Principles and Mechanism

Ice formation and accretion on surfaces is a serious economic issue in energy supply and transportation. Recent strategies for developing icephobic surfaces are intimately associated with superwettability. Commonly, the superwettability of icephobic materials depends on their surface roughness and chemical composition. This article critically categorizes the possible strategies to mitigate icing problems from daily life. The wettability and classical nucleation theories are used to characterize the icephobic surfaces. Thermodynamically, the advantages/disadvantages of superhydrophobic surfaces are discussed to explain icephobic behavior. The importance of elasticity, slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs), amphiphilicity, antifreezing protein, organogels, and stimuli-responsive materials has been highlighted to induce icephobic performance. In addition, the design principles and mechanism to fabricate icephobic surfaces with superwettability are explored and summarized.

Scalable and durable polymeric icephobic and hydrate-phobic coatings

Ice formation and accumulation on surfaces can result in severe problems for solar photovoltaic installations, offshore oil platforms, wind turbines and aircrafts. In addition, blockage of pipelines by formation and accumulation of clathrate hydrates of natural gases has safety and economical concerns in oil and gas operations, particularly at high pressures and low temperatures such as those found in subsea or arctic environments. Practical adoption of icephobic/hydrate-phobic surfaces requires mechanical robustness and stability under harsh environments. Here, we develop durable and mechanically robust bilayer poly-divinylbenzene (pDVB)/poly-perfluorodecylacrylate (pPFDA) coatings using initiated chemical vapor deposition (iCVD) to reduce the adhesion strength of ice/hydrates to underlying substrates (silicon and steel). Utilizing a highly-cross-linked polymer (pDVB) underneath a very thin veneer of fluorine-rich polymer (pPFDA) we have designed inherently rough bilayer polymer films that can be deposited on rough steel substrates resulting in surfaces which exhibit a receding water contact angle (WCA) higher than 150° and WCA hysteresis as low as 4°. Optical profilometer measurements were performed on the films and root mean square (RMS) roughness values of Rq = 178.0 ± 17.5 nm and Rq = 312.7 ± 23.5 nm were obtained on silicon and steel substrates, respectively. When steel surfaces are coated with these smooth hard iCVD bilayer polymer films, the strength of ice adhesion is reduced from 1010 ± 95 kPa to 180 ± 85 kPa. The adhesion strength of the cyclopentane (CyC5) hydrate is also reduced from 220 ± 45 kPa on rough steel substrates to 34 ± 12 kPa on the polymer-coated steel substrates. The durability of these bilayer polymer coated icephobic and hydrate-phobic substrates is confirmed by sand erosion tests and examination of multiple ice/hydrate adhesion/de-adhesion cycles.

Icephobic Behavior of UV-Cured Polymer Networks Incorporated into Slippery Lubricant-Infused Porous Surfaces: Improving SLIPS Durability

Ice accretion causes damage on power generation infrastructure, leading to mechanical failure. Icephobic materials are being researched so that ice buildup on these surfaces will be shed before the weight of the ice causes catastrophic damage. Lubricated materials have imposed the lowest-recorded forces of ice adhesion, and therefore lubricated materials are considered the state-of-the-art in this area. Slippery lubricant-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) are one type of such materials. SLIPS are initially very effective at repelling ice, but the trapped fluid layer that affords their icephobic properties is easily depleted by repeated icing/deicing cycles, even after one deicing event. UV-cured siloxane resins were infused into SLIPS to observe effects on icephobicity and durability. These UV-cured polymer networks enhanced both the icephobicity and longevity of the SLIPS; values of ice adhesion below 10 kPa were recorded, and appreciable icephobicity was maintained up to 10 icing/deicing cycles.

Wettability and Contact Time on a Biomimetic Superhydrophobic Surface

Inspired by the array microstructure of natural superhydrophobic surfaces (lotus leaf and cicada wing), an array microstructure was successfully constructed by high speed wire electrical discharge machining (HS-WEDM) on the surfaces of a 7075 aluminum alloy without any chemical treatment. The artificial surfaces had a high apparent contact angle of 153° ± 1° with a contact angle hysteresis less than 5° and showed a good superhydrophobic property. Wettability, contact time, and the corresponding superhydrophobic mechanism of artificial superhydrophobic surface were investigated. The results indicated that the micro-scale array microstructure was an important factor for the superhydrophobic surface, while different array microstructures exhibited different effects on the wettability and contact time of the artificial superhydrophobic surface. The length (L), interval (S), and height (H) of the array microstructure are the main influential factors on the wettability and contact time. The order of importance of these factors is H > S > L for increasing the apparent contact angle and reducing the contact time. The method, using HS-WEDM to fabricate superhydrophobic surface, is simple, low-cost, and environmentally friendly and can easily control the wettability and contact time on the artificial surfaces by changing the array microstructure.

Nano-Inclusions Applied in Cement-Matrix Composites: A Review

Research on cement-based materials is trying to exploit the synergies that nanomaterials can provide. This paper describes the findings reported in the last decade on the improvement of these materials regarding, on the one hand, their mechanical performance and, on the other hand, the new properties they provide. These features are mainly based on the electrical and chemical characteristics of nanomaterials, thus allowing cement-based elements to acquire "smart" functions. In this paper, we provide a quantitative approach to the reinforcements achieved to date. The fundamental concepts of nanoscience are introduced and the need of both sophisticated devices to identify nanostructures and techniques to disperse nanomaterials in the cement paste are also highlighted. Promising results have been obtained, but, in order to turn these advances into commercial products, technical, social and standardisation barriers should be overcome. From the results collected, it can be deduced that nanomaterials are able to reduce the consumption of cement because of their reinforcing effect, as well as to convert cement-based products into electric/thermal sensors or crack repairing materials. The main obstacle to foster the implementation of such applications worldwide is the high cost of their synthesis and dispersion techniques, especially for carbon nanotubes and graphene oxide.

Thermomechanical Mechanisms of Reducing Ice Adhesion on Superhydrophobic Surfaces

Superhydrophobic (SH) coatings have been shown to reduce freezing and ice nucleation rates, by means of low surface energy chemistry tailored with nano/micro roughness. Durability enhancement of SH surfaces is a crucial issue. Consequently, the present research on reducing ice adhesion is based on radiation-induced radical reaction for covalently bonding SiO2 nanoparticles to polymer coatings to obtain durable roughness. Results indicated that the proposed approach resulted in SH surfaces having high contact angles (>155°) and low sliding angles (<5°) with improved durability and transparency. In a subsequent stage, the synthesized SH coating was investigated for its icephobic characteristics using a variety of substrates. Results indicated that supercooled water drops bounced back when impinging on SH polycarbonate substrate and froze on SH copper substrate held at -10 to -30 °C and were easily peeled off when coated by ice formed during exposure to air/supercooled water drops at -20 °C. The ice shear adhesion investigation (at -20 °C) demonstrated reduction of shear adhesion to a variety of SH treated substrates having low thermal expansion coefficient (copper and aluminum) and high thermal expansion coefficient (polycarbonate and poly(methyl methacrylate)). It was concluded that the thermal mismatch between the adhering ice and the various substrates and its resultant interfacial thermal stresses affect the adhesion strength of the ice to the respective substrate.

Water droplet impact on elastic superhydrophobic surfaces

Water droplet impact on surfaces is a ubiquitous phenomenon in nature and industry, where the time of contact between droplet and surface influences the transfer of mass, momentum and energy. To manipulate and reduce the contact time of impacting droplets, previous publications report tailoring of surface microstructures that influence the droplet - surface interface. Here we show that surface elasticity also affects droplet impact, where a droplet impacting an elastic superhydrophobic surface can lead to a two-fold reduction in contact time compared to equivalent rigid surfaces. Using high speed imaging, we investigated the impact dynamics on elastic nanostructured superhydrophobic substrates having membrane and cantilever designs with stiffness 0.5–7630 N/m. Upon impact, the droplet excites the substrate to oscillate, while during liquid retraction, the substrate imparts vertical momentum back to the droplet with a springboard effect, causing early droplet lift-off with reduced contact time. Through detailed experimental and theoretical analysis, we show that this novel springboarding phenomenon is achieved for a specific range of Weber numbers (We >40) and droplet Froude numbers during spreading (Fr >1). The observation of the substrate elasticity-mediated droplet springboard effect provides new insight into droplet impact physics.
