Deep Convolutional Neural Networks for Detecting COVID-19 Using Medical Images: A Survey

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), which is caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-COV-2), surprised the world in December 2019 and has threatened the lives of millions of people. Countries all over the world closed worship places and shops, prevented gatherings, and implemented curfews to stand against the spread of COVID-19. Deep Learning (DL) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) can have a great role in detecting and fighting this disease. Deep learning can be used to detect COVID-19 symptoms and signs from different imaging modalities, such as X-Ray, Computed Tomography (CT), and Ultrasound Images (US). This could help in identifying COVID-19 cases as a first step to curing them. In this paper, we reviewed the research studies conducted from January 2020 to September 2022 about deep learning models that were used in COVID-19 detection. This paper clarified the three most common imaging modalities (X-Ray, CT, and US) in addition to the DL approaches that are used in this detection and compared these approaches. This paper also provided the future directions of this field to fight COVID-19 disease.

Model-based and model-free deep features fusion for high performed human gait recognition

In the last decade, the need for a non-contact biometric model for recognizing candidates has increased, especially after the pandemic of COVID-19 appeared and spread worldwide. This paper presents a novel deep convolutional neural network (CNN) model that guarantees quick, safe, and precise human authentication via their poses and walking style. The concatenated fusion between the proposed CNN and a fully connected model has been formulated, utilized, and tested. The proposed CNN extracts the human features from two main sources: (1) human silhouette images according to model-free and (2) human joints, limbs, and static joint distances according to a model-based via a novel, fully connected deep-layer structure. The most commonly used dataset, CASIA gait families, has been utilized and tested. Numerous performance metrics have been evaluated to measure the system quality, including accuracy, specificity, sensitivity, false negative rate, and training time. Experimental results reveal that the proposed model can enhance recognition performance in a superior manner compared with the latest state-of-the-art studies. Moreover, the suggested system introduces a robust real-time authentication with any covariate conditions, scoring 99.8% and 99.6% accuracy in identifying casia (B) and casia (A) datasets, respectively.

An End-to-End Cardiac Arrhythmia Recognition Method with an Effective DenseNet Model on Imbalanced Datasets Using ECG Signal

Electrocardiography (ECG) is a well-known noninvasive technique in medical science that provides information about the heart's rhythm and current conditions. Automatic ECG arrhythmia diagnosis relieves doctors' workload and improves diagnosis effectiveness and efficiency. This study proposes an automatic end-to-end 2D CNN (two-dimensional convolution neural networks) deep learning method with an effective DenseNet model for addressing arrhythmias recognition. To begin, the proposed model is trained and evaluated on the 97720 and 141404 beat images extracted from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology-Beth Israel Hospital (MIT-BIH) arrhythmia and St. Petersburg Institute of Cardiological Technics (INCART) datasets (both are imbalanced class datasets) using a stratified 5-fold evaluation strategy. The data is classified into four groups: N (normal), V (ventricular ectopic), S (supraventricular ectopic), and F (fusion), based on the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation® (AAMI). The experimental results show that the proposed model outperforms state-of-the-art models for recognizing arrhythmias, with the accuracy of 99.80% and 99.63%, precision of 98.34% and 98.94%, and F_1-score of 98.91% and 98.91% on the MIT-BIH arrhythmia and INCART datasets, respectively. Using a transfer learning mechanism, the proposed model is also evaluated with only five individuals of supraventricular MIT-BIH arrhythmia and five individuals of European ST-T datasets (both of which are also class imbalanced) and achieved satisfactory results. So, the proposed model is more generalized and could be a prosperous solution for arrhythmias recognition from class imbalance datasets in real-life applications.

Internet of Medical Things-Based COVID-19 Detection in CT Images Fused with Fuzzy Ensemble and Transfer Learning Models

One of the most difficult research areas in today's healthcare industry to combat the coronavirus pandemic is accurate COVID-19 detection. Because of its low infection miss rate and high sensitivity, chest computed tomography (CT) imaging has been recommended as a viable technique for COVID-19 diagnosis in a number of recent clinical investigations. This article presents an Internet of Medical Things (IoMT)-based platform for improving and speeding up COVID-19 identification. Clinical devices are connected to network resources in the suggested IoMT platform using cloud computing. The method enables patients and healthcare experts to work together in real time to diagnose and treat COVID-19, potentially saving time and effort for both patients and physicians. In this paper, we introduce a technique for classifying chest CT scan images into COVID, pneumonia, and normal classes that use a Sugeno fuzzy integral ensemble across three transfer learning models, namely SqueezeNet, DenseNet-201, and MobileNetV2. The suggested fuzzy ensemble techniques outperform each individual transfer learning methodology as well as trainable ensemble strategies in terms of accuracy. The suggested MobileNetV2 fused with Sugeno fuzzy integral ensemble model has a 99.15% accuracy rate. In the present research, this framework was utilized to identify COVID-19, but it may also be implemented and used for medical imaging analyses of other disorders.
