Effect of Wall Boundary Layer Thickness on Power Performance of a Recirculation Microbial Fuel Cell

A critical review on early-warning electrochemical system on microbial fuel cell-based biosensor for on-site water quality monitoring

The microbial fuel cell (MFC) sensor is a very promising self-powered self-sustainable system for early warning water quality detection. These sensors are cost-effective, biodegradable, compact in design, and portable in nature are favorable for real-time in situ water quality monitoring. This review represents the mechanism action behind the toxicity detection, optimization strategies, process parameters, role of biofilm, the role of external resistance, hydrodynamic study, and mathematical modeling for improving the performance of the sensor. Additionally, the techno-economic prospect of this MFC-based sensor and its challenges, limitations are addressed to make it economically more favorable for commercial use. The future direction is also explored based on the sensor's disadvantages and limitations. Comprehensively, this review covered all the possible directions of MFC sensor fabrication, their application, recent advancement, prospects challenges, and their possible solutions.

Studying the Impact of Wall Shear Stress on the Development and Performance of Electrochemically Active Biofilms

A laminar flow reactor was designed that provides constant and reproducible growth conditions for the bioelectrochemical observation of electroactive bacteria (EAB). Experiments were performed using four reactors in parallel to enable the comparison of EAB growth behavior and bioelectrochemical performance under different hydrodynamic conditions while simultaneously keeping biological conditions identical. With regard to the moderate flow conditions found in wastewater treatment applications, the wall shear stress was adjusted to a range between 0.4 mPa to 2.9 mPa. Chronoamperometric data indicate that early stage current densities are improved by a moderate increase of the wall shear stress. In the same way, current onset times were increasing slightly towards higher values of the applied wall shear stress. Long-term observations of EAB performance showed a decrease in current density and a leveling of the trend observed for the early stages of biofilm growth.

Performance of an air-cathode microbial fuel cell under varied relative humidity conditions in the cathode chamber

The performance of an air-cathode microbial fuel cell (MFC) with a cap arrangement was significantly affected by humidity conditions in the cathode. An MFC at a relative humidity (RH) of 88% produced a highest cell voltage of 0.42 V (600 Ω) compared to other operations at 50% (0.34 V) and 30% (0.29 V) RHs. During polarization analysis, MFC operation at 88% RH produced a maximum power density of 0.377 W/m² (a current density of 1.5 A/m²), which was 1.8 and 2.9 times higher than with 50% and 30% RHs, respectively. Cyclic voltammogram analysis revealed a higher reduction current of - 0.073 A with 88% RH. Furthermore, no increase in dissolved oxygen concentration in the anode chamber was observed with 88% RH. This result suggests that control of humidity conditions in cathode chamber could maximize power generation from an air-cathode MFC.

Optimization of the Electrolyte Parameters and Components in Zinc Particle Fuel Cells

Zinc (Zn)-air fuel cells (ZAFC) are a widely-acknowledged type of metal air fuel cells, but optimization of several operational parameters and components will facilitate enhanced power performance. This research study has been focused on the investigation of ZAFC Zn particle fuel with flowing potassium hydroxide (KOH) electrolyte. Parameters like optimum electrolyte concentration, temperature, and flow velocity were optimized. Moreover, ZAFC components like anode current collector and cathode conductor material were varied and the appropriate materials were designated. Power performance was analyzed in terms of open circuit voltage (OCV), power, and current density production and were used to justify the results of the study. The flow rate of the electrolyte was determined as 150 mL/min in the self-designed configuration. KOH electrolyte of 40 wt% concentration, at a temperature of 55 to 65 ℃, and with a flow velocity of 0.12 m/s was considered to be beneficial for the ZAFCs operated in this study. Nickel mesh with a surface area of 400 cm2 was chosen as anode current collector and copper plate was considered as cathode conductor material in the fuel cells designed and operated in this study. The power production of this study was better compared to some previously published works. Thus, effective enhancement and upgrading process of the ZAFCs will definitely provide great opportunities for their applications in the future.
