Review on the Safe Use of Ammonia Fuel Cells in the Maritime Industry

A US perspective on closing the carbon cycle to defossilize difficult-to-electrify segments of our economy

Electrification to reduce or eliminate greenhouse gas emissions is essential to mitigate climate change. However, a substantial portion of our manufacturing and transportation infrastructure will be difficult to electrify and/or will continue to use carbon as a key component, including areas in aviation, heavy-duty and marine transportation, and the chemical industry. In this Roadmap, we explore how multidisciplinary approaches will enable us to close the carbon cycle and create a circular economy by defossilizing these difficult-to-electrify areas and those that will continue to need carbon. We discuss two approaches for this: developing carbon alternatives and improving our ability to reuse carbon, enabled by separations. Furthermore, we posit that co-design and use-driven fundamental science are essential to reach aggressive greenhouse gas reduction targets.

Risk assessment of ammonia bunkering operations: Perspectives on different release scales

Ammonia is an alternative marine fuel to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Conducting studies on ammonia bunkering risk is essential as ammonia is toxic and corrosive to humans and the environment. This study aims to assess the ammonia bunkering operational risk from the perspectives of small, medium and large release scales. Scaling releases from small to medium results in more changes in cloud footprints at lower gas concentrations. Conversely, transitioning from medium to large releases causes more changes in cloud footprints at higher gas concentrations and lethality footprints with higher values. Moreover, this study performs a sensitivity analysis on ammonia bunkering supply, release, and meteorological factors. Wind speed is the most significant factor in small and medium releases, while hose diameter is the most significant factor in large releases. Under the given inputs, a 50% change in wind speed can have up to 100% change in the 1100 ppm maximum cloud footprint for small releases and a 663% change for medium releases. Similarly, a 50% change in hose diameter can result in a 1689% change in the 1100 ppm maximum cloud footprint for large releases. The research provides valuable insights into analysing ammonia bunkering operational risk considering different risk assessment criteria.

Tailoring ammonia capture in MOFs and COFs: A multi-scale and machine learning comprehensive investigation of functional group modification

Our study aims to examine the impact of ligand functionalization on the ammonia adsorption properties of MOFs and COFs, by combining multi-scale calculations with machine learning techniques. Density Functional Theory calculations were performed to investigate the interactions between ammonia (NH3) and a comprehensive set of 48 strategically chosen functional groups. In all of the cases, it is observed that functionalized rings exhibit a stronger interaction with ammonia molecule compared to unfunctionalized benzene, while -O2Mg demonstrates the highest interaction energy with ammonia (15 times stronger than the bare benzene). The trend obtained from the thorough DFT screening is verified via Grand Canonical Monte-Carlo calculations by employing interatomic potentials derived from quantum chemical calculations. Isosteric heat of adsorption plots provide a comprehensive elucidation of the adsorption process, and important insights can be taken for studies in fine-tuning materials for ammonia adsorption. Furthermore, a proof of concept machine learning (ML) analysis is conducted, which demonstrates that ML can accurately predict NH3 binding energies despite the limited amount of data. The findings derived from our multi-scale methodology indicate that the functionalization strategy can be utilized to guide synthesis towards MOFs, COFs, or other porous materials for enhanced NH3 adsorption capacity.

High-Performance Ammonia Protonic Ceramic Fuel Cells Using a Pd Inter-Catalyst

This study reports the performance and durability of a protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) in an ammonia fuel injection environment. The low ammonia decomposition rate in PCFCs with lower operating temperatures is improved relative to that of solid oxide fuel cells by treatment with a catalyst. By treating the anode of the PCFCs with a palladium (Pd) catalyst at 500 °C under ammonia fuel injection, the performance (peak power density of 340 mW cm^-2 at 500 °C) is approximately two-fold higher than that of the bare sample not treated with Pd. Pd catalysts are deposited through an atomic layer deposition post-treatment process on the anode surface, in which nickel oxide (NiO) and BaZr_0.2 Ce_0.6 Y_0.1 Yb_0.1 O_3-δ (BZCYYb) are mixed, and Pd can penetrate the anode surface and porous interior. Impedance analysis confirmed that Pd increased the current collection and significantly reduced the polarization resistance, particularly in the low-temperature region (≈500 °C), thereby improving the performance. Furthermore, stability tests showed that superior durability is achieved compared with that of the bare sample. Based on these results, the method presented herein is expected to represent a promising solution for securing high-performance and stable PCFCs based on ammonia injection.

Fuel Cell Systems for Maritime: A Review of Research Development, Commercial Products, Applications, and Perspectives

The ambitious targets set by the International Maritime Organization for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from shipping require radical actions by all relevant stakeholders. In this context, the interest in high efficiency and low emissions (even zero in the case of hydrogen) fuel cell technology for maritime applications has been rising during the last decade, pushing the research developed by academia and industries. This paper aims to present a comparative review of the fuel cell systems suitable for the maritime field, focusing on PEMFC and SOFC technologies. This choice is due to the spread of these fuel cell types concerning the other ones in the maritime field. The following issues are analyzed in detail: (i) the main characteristics of fuel cell systems; (ii) the available technology suppliers; (iii) international policies for fuel cells onboard ships; (iv) past and ongoing projects at the international level that aim to assess fuel cell applications in the maritime industry; (v) the possibility to apply fuel cell systems on different ship types. This review aims to be a reference and a guide to state both the limitations and the developing potential of fuel cell systems for different maritime applications.

Thermal Evaluation of a Novel Integrated System Based on Solid Oxide Fuel Cells and Combined Heat and Power Production Using Ammonia as Fuel

A novel integrated system based on solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), a gas turbine (GT), the steam Rankine cycle (SRC), the Kalina cycle (KC), and the organic Rankine cycle (ORC) is proposed to achieve cascade energy utilization. Mathematical models are introduced and system performance is analyzed using energy and exergy methods. The first and second laws of thermodynamics are used to analyze the system thermodynamically. In addition, exergy destruction and losses of the various integrated subsystems are calculated. The energy and exergy efficiencies of the multigeneration system are estimated to be 60.4% and 57.3%, respectively. In addition, the hot water produced during the waste heat recovery process may also be used for accommodating seafarers on ships. Sequential optimization is developed to optimize the operating conditions of the integrated system to achieve the required power output. A comprehensive parametric study is conducted to investigate the effect of varying the current densities of the fuel cell and working fluid of the ORC on the overall performance of the combined system and subsystems. The working performance of five working fluids for the ORC as candidates—R134a, R600, R601, R152a, and R124—is compared. R152a, which provides 71.23 kW of power output, and energy and exergy efficiencies of 22.49% and 42.76%, respectively, is selected as the best thermodynamic performance for the ORC.

Safety Considerations of Hydrogen Application in Shipping in Comparison to LNG

Shipping accounts for about 3% of global CO2 emissions. In order to achieve the target set by the Paris Agreement, IMO introduced their GHG strategy. This strategy envisages 50% emission reduction from international shipping by 2050, compared with 2008. This target cannot be fulfilled if conventional fuels are used. Amongst others, hydrogen is considered to be one of the strong candidates as a zero-emissions fuel. Yet, concerns around the safety of its storage and usage have been formulated and need to be addressed. “Safety”, in this article, is defined as the control of recognized hazards to achieve an acceptable level of risk. This article aims to propose a new way of comparing two systems with regard to their safety. Since safety cannot be directly measured, fuzzy set theory is used to compare linguistic terms such as “safer”. This method is proposed to be used during the alternative design approach. This approach is necessary for deviations from IMO rules, for example, when hydrogen should be used in shipping. Additionally, the properties of hydrogen that can pose a hazard, such as its wide flammability range, are identified.

Hydrogen vs. Batteries: Comparative Safety Assessments for a High-Speed Passenger Ferry

Batteries and hydrogen constitute two of the most promising solutions for decarbonising international shipping. This paper presents the comparison between a battery and a proton-exchange membrane hydrogen fuel cell version of a high-speed catamaran ferry with a main focus on safety. The systems required for each version are properly sized and fitted according to the applicable rules, and their impact on the overall design is discussed. Hazards for both designs were identified; frequency and consequence indexes for them were input qualitatively, following Novel Technology Qualification and SOLAS Alternative Designs and Arrangements, while certain risk control options were proposed in order to reduce the risks of the most concerned accidental events. The highest ranked risks were analysed by quantitative risk assessments in PyroSim software. The gas dispersion analysis performed for the hydrogen version indicated that it is crucial for the leakage in the fuel cell room to be stopped within 1 s after being detected to prevent the formation of explosive masses under full pipe rupture of 33 mm diameter, even with 120 air changes per hour. For the battery version, the smoke/fire simulation in the battery room indicated that the firefighting system could achieve a 30% reduction in fire duration, with firedoors closed and ventilation shut, compared to the scenario without a firefighting system.

A Review of the Latest Trends in the Use of Green Ammonia as an Energy Carrier in Maritime Industry

This review paper examines the key barriers to using green ammonia as an alternative fuel in maritime industry. A literature survey is performed based on research articles and grey literature, with the aim of discussing the technoeconomic problems with and benefits of ammonia and the relevant technologies. The limitations of ammonia as a maritime fuel and its supply chain, the expected percentage demand by 2030 and 2050, its economic performance compared to other shipping fuels such as hydrogen, and the current regulations that may impact ammonia as a maritime fuel are discussed. There are several key barriers to ammonia’s wide adoption: (1) High production costs, due to the high capital costs associated with ammonia’s supply chain; (2) availability, specifically the limited geographical locations available for ammonia bunkering; (3) the challenge of ramping up current ammonia production; and (4) the development of ammonia-specific regulations addressing issues such as toxicity, safety, and storage. The general challenges involved with blue ammonia are the large energy penalty and associated operational costs, and a lack of technical expertise on its use. Regardless of the origin, for ammonia to be truly zero-carbon its whole lifecycle must be considered—a key challenge that will aid in the debate about whether ammonia holds promise as a zero-carbon maritime fuel.

Safety and Reliability Analysis of an Ammonia-Powered Fuel-Cell System

Recently, the shipping industry has been under increasing pressure to improve its environmental impact with a target of a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, compared to the 2008 levels. For this reason, great attention has been placed on alternative zero-carbon fuels, specifically ammonia, which is considered a promising solution for shipping decarbonisation. In this respect, a novel ammonia-powered fuel-cell configuration is proposed as an energy-efficient power generation configuration with excellent environmental performance. However, there are safety and reliability concerns of the proposed ammonia-powered system that need to be addressed prior to its wider acceptance by the maritime community. Therefore, this is the first attempt to holistically examine the safety, operability, and reliability of an ammonia fuel-cell-powered ship, while considering the bunkering and fuel specifications. The proposed methodology includes the novel combination of a systematic preliminary hazard identification process with a functional and model-based approach for simulating the impact of various hazards. Furthermore, the critical faults and functional failures of the proposed system are identified and ranked according to their importance. This work can be beneficial for both shipowners and policymakers by introducing technical innovation and for supporting the future regulatory framework.
