Conversion of Carbohydrates in Lignocellulosic Biomass after Chemical Pretreatment

A Thermophile-Fermented Compost Modulates Intestinal Cations and the Expression of a Juvenile Hormone-Binding Protein Gene in the Female Larvae of Hercules Beetle Dynastes hercules (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae)

The Hercules beetle larvae grow by feeding on humus, and adding a thermophile-fermented compost to the humus can upregulate the growth of female larvae. In this study, the effects of compost on the intestinal environment, including pH, cation concentrations, and organic acid concentrations of intestinal fluids, were investigated, and the RNA profile of the fat body was determined. Although the total intestinal potassium ions were similar between the larvae grown without compost (control larvae) and those with compost (compost larvae), the proportion of potassium ions in the midgut of the compost larvae drastically increased. In the midgut, an unidentified organic acid was the most abundant, and its concentration increased in the compost larvae. Transcriptome analysis showed that a gene encoding hemolymph juvenile-binding protein (JHBP) was expressed in the compost female larvae and not in the control female larvae. Expression of many genes involved in the defensive system was decreased in the compost female larvae. These results suggest that the female-specific enhancement of larval growth by compost was associated with the increased JHBP expression under conditions in which the availability of nutrition from the humus was improved by an increase in potassium ions in the midgut.

Eco-Friendly Methods for Extraction and Modification of Cellulose: An Overview

Cellulose is the most abundant renewable polymer on Earth and can be obtained from several different sources, such as trees, grass, or biomass residues. However, one of the issues is that not all the fractionation processes are eco-friendly and are essentially based on cooking the lignocellulose feedstock in a harsh chemical mixture, such as NaOH + Na₂S, and water, to break loose fibers. In the last few years, new sustainable fractionation processes have been developed that enable the obtaining of cellulose fibers in a more eco-friendly way. As a raw material, cellulose's use is widely known and established in many areas. Additionally, its products/derivatives are recognized to have a far better environmental impact than fossil-based materials. Examples are textiles and packaging, where forest-based fibers may contribute to renewable and biodegradable substitutes for common synthetic materials and plastics. In this review, some of the main structural characteristics and properties of cellulose, recent green extraction methods/strategies, chemical modification, and applications of cellulose derivatives are discussed.

Determining Optimal Temperature Combination for Effective Pretreatment and Anaerobic Digestion of Corn Stalk

Temperature is one of the important factors affecting both chemical pretreatment and anaerobic digestion (AD) process of corn stalk (CS). In this work, the combined ways between pretreatment temperature (40 °C and 60 °C) and AD temperature (35 °C and 55 °C) were selected to investigate the AD performance for sodium hydroxide (NaOH) pretreated CS. Three organic loading rates (OLRs) of 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 g·L⁻¹·d⁻¹ were studied within 255 days using continuously stirred tank reactors (CSTR). The results revealed that biogas yields of CS after pretreated were higher than that of untreated groups by 36.79–55.93% and 11.49–32.35%, respectively. When the temperature of NaOH pretreatment changed from 40 °C to 60 °C, there was no significant difference in enhancing the methane yields during the three OLRs. The mesophilic AD (MAD) of CS pretreated with 2% NaOH under 40 °C and 60 °C conditions produced 275 and 280 mL·g_vs⁻¹ methane yield at OLR of 1.6 g·L⁻¹·d⁻¹. However, as the OLR increased, the methane yield of CS under thermophilic AD (TAD) condition was further higher than under MAD condition. Furthermore, from the perspectives of energy balance and economic analysis, AD of 40 °C-treated CS recovered more energy and TAD is less expensive. Therefore, temperature of 40 °C was considered as an appropriate for pretreatment whether in mesophilic or thermophilic AD system. On the other hand, TAD was chosen as the optimal AD temperatures for higher OLRs.

Helianthus salicifolius as a New Biomass Source for Biogas Production

Renewable energy is becoming a widely discussed topic in the European Union (EU), due to a desire to reduce the negative effects of fossil fuels on climate change and biodiversity. About 60% of the total renewable energy produced in the EU is derived from biomass. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is an important pathway to convert biomass into biogas and then into bioenergy. Helianthus salicifolius is a perennial plant, whose biomass can serve as a co-substrate in biogas plants. Biomass composition, in addition to the biomethane and biogas potential, were investigated in raw green biomass and silage obtained from Helianthus salicifolius plants grown under different types (mineral and organic) and doses (0, 85, 170 kg N ha−1) of nitrogen fertilization. The biomethane production efficiency from Helianthus salicifolius was recorded for 25 days and found to range on average between 169.4 NL kg−1 VS for raw biomass and 193.2 NL kg−1 VS for silage. It follows from the current study that ensiling increases substrate digestibility and has a positive impact on methane concentration, but the biomethane and biogas production outputs from those substrates did not differ significantly at the end of the process.
