Recent Advances in MOF-Based Adsorbents for Dye Removal from the Aquatic Environment

High-efficient removal of methylene blue by zirconium-based organic frameworks modified with 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid: Characterization, performances, and mechanisms

The vast discharge of methylene blue (MB) dye in industrial effluent, risks the ecological environment, thus making its removal unavoidable. Recently, metal organic frameworks (MOFs) due to their larger pore volume, surface area and easy synthesis have proved to be exceptionally promising materials for contaminant treatment. Based on 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (BTC) as a modifier, a new composite material consisting of BTC and Zr-based MOF (UIO-66-BTC) was fabricated for the effective removal of MB from the effluent. Its synthesis and efficient application has been confirmed by characterization analysis. The influencing factors, adsorption isotherms, and adsorption kinetics of MB adsorption by adsorbent were studied. It was demonstrated that the removal rate of MB adsorption by UIO-66-BTC reached 98.45% and the adsorption amount reached 393.80 mg g-1 at temperature (298 K), pH 7, adsorbent dosage (0.5 g L-1), MB initial concentration (200 mg L-1), and contact time of 720 min, respectively. The maximum adsorption of MB by UIO-66-BTC was 20.827 times higher than that of UIO-66 (18.908 mg g-1). The experimental data fits with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm, implying that the adsorption process is a monolayer chemisorption process. The thermodynamic and regeneration experiments showed that the spontaneous process enhanced the adsorption of MB at lower temperatures and the adsorption efficiency of MB remained above 68% after five successive cycles. The mechanism of MB adsorption on adsorbents is mainly based on electrostatic interactions, pore filling, hydrogen bonding and π-π interactions. It is concluded that this new adsorbent can be effectively used to treat MB in effluents.

Bionanocomposite MIL-100(Fe)/Cellulose as a high-performance adsorbent for the adsorption of methylene blue

World production of dyes is estimated at more than 800,000 t·yr-1. The purpose of this research falls within the scope of the choice of an effective, local, and inexpensive adsorbent to remove dyes from wastewater. Adsorptive elimination of dyes by commonly accessible adsorbents is inefficient. The metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are an important class of porous materials offering exceptional properties as adsorbents by improving separation efficiency compared to existing commercial adsorbents. However, its powder form limits its applications. One way to overcome this problem is to trap them in a flexible matrix to form a hierarchical porous composite. Therefore, in this work, we prepared MIL-100 (Fe) embedded in a cellulose matrix named MIL-100(Fe)/Cell, and used it as an adsorbent of methylene blue (MB) dye. According to the BET analysis, the specific surface area of the synthesized MOF is 294 m2/g which is related to the presence of the cellulose as efficient and green support. The structure of this composite is approximately hexagonal. Adsorption was studied as a function of contact time, adsorbent mass and pollutant load (concentration), and pH, and the effect of each of them on absorption efficiency was optimized. The MIL-100(Fe)/Cell was capable of removing 98.94% of MB dye with an initial concentration of 150 mg/L within 10 min at pH = 6.5 and room temperature. The obtained maximum adsorption capacity was 384.615 mg/g. The adsorption isotherm is consistent with the Langmuir models. The mechanism of MB adsorption proceeds through п-п and electrostatic interactions.

Environmental Potential of Carbonized MOF-5/PANI Composites for Pesticide, Dye, and Metal Cations-Can They Actually Retain Them All?

The environmental application of the carbonized composites of the Zn-containing metal-organic framework MOF-5 and polyaniline (PANI) in its emeraldine salt and base forms (C-(MOF-5/PANI)) was investigated for the first time. Textural properties and particle size distributions revealed that composites are dominantly mesoporous and nanoscale in nature, while Raman spectroscopy revealed the ZnO phase beneath the carbon matrix. Adsorption of pesticide, dye, and metal cation on C-(MOF-5/PANI) composites in aqueous solutions was evaluated and compared with the behavior of the precursor components, carbonized MOF-5 (cMOF), and carbonized PANIs. A lower MOF-5 content in the precursor, a higher specific surface area, and the pore volume of the composites led to improved adsorption performance for acetamiprid (124 mg/g) and Methylene Blue (135 mg/g). The presence of O/N functional groups in composites is essential for the adsorption of nitrogen-rich pollutants through hydrogen bonding with an estimated monolayer capacity twice as high as that of cMOF. The proton exchange accompanying Cd2+ retention was associated with the Zn/Cd ion exchange, and the highest capacity (9.8 mg/g) was observed for the composite synthesized from the precursor with a high MOF-5 content. The multifunctionality of composites was evidenced in mixtures of pollutants where noticeably better performance for Cd2+ removal was found for the composite compared to cMOF. Competitive binding between three pollutants favored the adsorption of pesticide and dye, thereby hindering to some extent the ion exchange necessary for the removal of metal cations. The results emphasize the importance of the PANI form and MOF-5/PANI weight ratio in precursors for the development of surface, porosity, and active sites in C-(MOF-5/PANI) composites, thus guiding their environmental efficiency. The study also demonstrated that C-(MOF-5/PANI) composites retained studied pollutants much better than carbonized precursor PANIs and showed comparable or better adsorption ability than cMOF.

Novel magnetic nanocomposites BiFeO3/Cu(BDC) for efficient dye removal

In this study, bismuth ferrite nanoparticles and metal-organic framework, Cu(BDC), were prepared by microwave-assisted combustion in solid state and ultrasound-assisted method, respectively. To enhance the properties of bismuth ferrite nanoparticles and Cu(BDC), we form them as their composite through microwave and ultrasonic probe strategies. Various analyses, including FT-IR, XRD, SEM, DRS, VSM, and so on, were applied to verify the synthesis accuracy. Then, the catalytic performances of the nanoparticles and the as-prepared nanocomposites were evaluated through photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange. Furthermore, the adsorption capacity of the as-synthesized materials was assessed toward the Congo red removal from wastewater. All the results prove that the proposed nanocomposite can be an acceptable candidate for eliminating contaminants from wastewater. The electrochemical properties of bismuth ferrite, BiFeO3/Cu(BDC) nanocomposite 1, and BiFeO3/Cu(BDC) nanocomposite 2 have been studied by cyclic voltammetry.

Efficiency and selectivity of cost-effective Zn-MOF for dye removal, kinetic and thermodynamic approach

Green synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has attracted a lot of attention as a crucial step for practical industrial applications. In this work, green synthesis of zinc(II) metal-organic framework (Zn-MOF) has been carried out at room temperature. The Zn metal (node) was extracted from spent domestic batteries, and the linker was benzene di-carboxylic acid (BDC). The characterization of the as-prepared Zn-MOF was accomplished by PXRD, FT-IR spectroscopy, SEM, TEM, TGA, and nitrogen adsorption at 77 K. All the characterization techniques strongly supported that as-synthesized Zn-MOF using metallic solid waste Zn is similar to that was reported in the literature. The as-prepared Zn-MOF was stable in water for 24 h without any changes in its functional groups and framework. The prepared Zn-MOF was tested for the adsorption of three dyes, two anionic dyes, aniline blue (AB), and orange II (O(II)) as well as methylene blue (MB), an example of cationic dye from aqueous solution. AB has the highest equilibrium adsorbed amount, qe, of value 55.34 mg g-1 at pH = 7 and 25 °C within 40 min. Investigation of the adsorption kinetics indicated that these adsorption processes could be described as a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Furthermore, the adsorption process of the three dyes was described well by the Freundlich isotherm model. According to the thermodynamic parameters, the adsorption of AB on the prepared Zn-MOF was an endothermic and spontaneous process. In contrast, it was non-spontaneous and exothermic for the uptake of O(II) and MB. This study complements the business case development model of "solid waste to value-added MOFs."

Adsorption of Basic Yellow 28 and Basic Blue 3 Dyes from Aqueous Solution Using Silybum Marianum Stem as a Low-Cost Adsorbent

In the present study, the ability of an adsorbent (SLM Stem) obtained from the stem of the Silybum Marianum plant to treat wastewater containing the cationic dyes basic blue 3 (BB3) and basic yellow 28 (BY28) from aqueous solutions was investigated using a batch method. Then, the SLM Stem (SLM Stem-Natural) adsorbent was carbonized at different temperatures (200-900 °C) and the removal capacity of the products obtained for both dyes was examined again. The investigation continued with the product carbonized at 800 °C (SLM Stem-800 °C), the adsorbent with the highest removal capacity. The dyestuff removal studies were continued with the SLM Stem-Natural and SLM Stem-800 °C adsorbents because they had the highest removal values. The surface properties of these two adsorbents were investigated using IR, SEM, and XRD measurements. It was determined that the SLM Stem-Natural has mainly non-porous material, and the SLM Stem-800 °C has a microporous structure. The optimal values for various parameters, including adsorbent amount, initial dye solution concentration, contact time, temperature, pH, and agitation speed, were investigated for BY28 dye and were 0.05 g, 15 mg/L, 30 min, 40 °C, pH 6 and 100 rpm when SLM Stem-Natural adsorbent was used and, 0.15 g, 30 mg/L, 30 min, 40 °C, pH 10, and 150 rpm when SLM Stem-800 °C adsorbent was used. For BB3 dye, optimal parameter values of 0.20 g, 10 mg/L, 30 min, 25 °C, pH 7, and 100 rpm were obtained when SLM Stem-Natural adsorbent was used and 0.15 g, 15 mg/L, 40 min, 40 °C, pH 10, and 100 rpm when SLM Stem-800 °C adsorbent was used. The Langmuir isotherm described the adsorption process best, with a value of r2 = 0.9987. When SLM Stem-800 °C adsorbent was used for BY28 dye at 25 °C, the highest qm value in the Langmuir isotherm was 271.73 mg/g. When the study was repeated with actual water samples under optimum conditions, the highest removal for the BY28 dye was 99.9% in tap water with the SLM Stem-800 °C adsorbent. Furthermore, the reuse study showed the adsorbent's efficiency even after three repetitions.

Alginate-based porous polyHIPE for removal of single and multi-dye mixtures: Competitive isotherm and molecular docking studies

A novel hydrophilic porous alginate-based polyHIPE (AGA) was synthesized via an oil-in-water emulsion templating approach. AGA was used as an adsorbent for removing methylene blue (MB) dye in single- and multi-dye systems. BET, SEM, FTIR, XRD, and TEM were used to characterize AGA to elucidate its morphology, composition and physicochemical properties. According to the results, 1.25 g/L AGA adsorbed 99 % of 10 mg/L MB in 3 h in a single-dye system. The removal efficiency decreased to 97.2 % in the presence of 10 mg/L Cu2+ ions and 40.2 % when the solution salinity increased to 70 %. In a single-dye system, the experimental data do not match well with the Freundlich isotherm, pseudo-first order, and the Elovich kinetic model, however, in a multi-dye system, it fit well with both extended Langmuir and the Sheindorf-Rebhun-Sheintuch. Notably, AGA removed 66.87 mg/g in a dye solution containing only MB, whereas 50.14-60.01 mg/g adsorption of MB was accomplished in a multiple-dye system. According to the molecular docking analysis, the dye removal process involved chemical bonds between the functional groups of AGA and the dye molecules, hydrogen bonds, hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions. The overall binding score of MB decreased from -26.9 kcal/mol in a single-dye system to -18.3 kcal/mol in a ternary system.

e-Beam and γ-rays Induced Synthesis and Catalytic Properties of Copper Nanoclusters-Deposited Composite Track-Etched Membranes

Effective removal of toxic inorganic and organic pollutants is one of the current leading challenges of wastewater treatment. In this study, the decomposition of methylene blue (MB) under UV light irradiation was investigated in the presence of copper nanoclusters (NCs)-deposited polyethylene terephthalate (PET) track-etched hybrid membranes. PET track-etched membranes (TeMs) with an average pore size of ~400 nm were grafted by functional acrylic acid (AA) monomer under electron beam irradiation after oxidation with H₂O₂/UV system. The radiation dose varied between 46 and 200 kGy. For the deposition of copper NCs, poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)-grafted membranes saturated with Cu(II) ions were irradiated either by electron beam or γ-rays to obtain copper-based NCs for the catalytic degradation of MB. Irradiation to 100 kGy with accelerated electrons resulted in the formation of small and uniform copper hydroxide (Cu(OH)₂) nanoparticles homogeneously distributed over the entire volume of the template. On the other hand, irradiation under γ-rays yielded composites with copper NCs with a high degree of crystallinity. However, the size of the deposited NCs obtained by γ-irradiation was not uniform. Nanoparticles with the highest uniformity were obtained at 150 kGy dose. Detailed analysis by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed the loading of copper nanoparticles with an average size of 100 nm on the inner walls of nanochannels and on the surface of PET TeMs. Under UV light irradiation, composite membranes loaded with NCs exhibited high photocatalytic activity. It was determined that the highest catalytic activity was observed in the presence of Cu(OH)₂@PET-g-PAA membrane obtained at 250 kGy. More than 91.9% of the initial dye was degraded when this hybrid membrane was employed for 180 min, while only 83.9% of MB was degraded under UV light using Cu@PET-g-PAA membrane. Cu(OH)₂@PET-g-PAA membranes obtained under electron beam irradiation demonstrated a higher photocatalytic activity compared to Cu@PET-g-PAA membranes attained by γ-rays.

Adsorption efficacy of functionalized Cu-BDC MOFs tethered 2-mercaptobenzimidazole analogue: A comparative study

A novel metal-organic framework [MOFs], and 2-[benzo [d]thiazol-2-ylthio)-3-hydroxy acrylaldehyde-Cu-benzene dicarboxylic acid was synthesized by solvothermal method and characterized using p-XRD, FSEM-EDX, TGA, BET, FTIR. The tethered organic linker, 2-[benzo [d]thiazol-2-ylthio)-3-hydroxyacrylaldehyde was commonly known as 2-mercaptobenimidazole analogue [2-MBIA]. Analysis of BET disclosed that addition of 2-MBIA to Cu-benzene dicarboxylic acid [Cu-BDC], reduced the crystallite size from 70.0 nm to 65.90 nm, surface area from 17.95 to 17.02 m² g^-1 and enhances the pore size from 5.84 nm with 0.027 cm³ g^-1 pore volume to 8.74 nm with 0.361 cm³ g^-1 pore volume. Batch experiments were conducted to optimize pH, adsorbent dosage, and, Congo red (CR) concentration. The adsorption percentage of CR on the novel MOFs was 54%. Adsorption kinetic studies revealed that the uptake adsorption capacity at equilibrium was 184.7 mg/g from pseudo-first-order kinetics which gave a good fit with the experimental data. Intraparticle diffusion model explained the process of the adsorption mechanism: diffusion from the bulk solution onto the porous surface of the adsorbent. Freundlich and Sips models were the best fit models of the several non-linear isotherm models. Temkin isotherm suggested the adsorption of CR on MOFs was of an exothermic nature.

Adsorption of Methyl Orange on a Novel Palygorskite/UiO-66 Nanocomposite

Herein, a novel composite material containing UiO-66 and palygorskite (Pal) clay mineral was prepared using a facile one-pot synthesis process. The material was studied using a variety of techniques and applied as did not affect the structure of the metal-organic framework (MOF) part, but induced a small increase in specific surface area. The developed Pal/UiO-66 composite presented excellent adsorption efficiency against MO removal, as evidenced by detailed kinetic and isotherm experiments. An impressive maximum adsorption capacity at equilibrium was evidenced; 340 mg g−1 at pH = 5 and T = 25 °C. This corresponds to a 34.5 % increase compared with pure UiO-66, considering only the MOF content. Furthermore, the Pal/UiO-66 composite was proven stable and highly recyclable, losing less than 9% of the removal capacity after five consecutive cycles. The study highlights the synergistic effect of the coupling of MOF structures with low-cost and abundant clay minerals for the development of advanced absorbents.
