Improved Water Consumption Estimates of Black Locust Plantations in China’s Loess Plateau

Different biomass production and soil water patterns between natural and artificial vegetation along an environmental gradient on the Loess Plateau

Loess Plateau (LP) is a vulnerable and climate-sensitive ecoregion. With the implementation of "Grain for Green" project (GGP), the vegetation cover has largely improved, while the contradiction between overconsumption of soil water and sustainability of restored vegetation is increasingly prominent, and further threatening the ecosystem sustainability and socioeconomic development. Understanding the different responses of relations of biomass production and soil water regimes between natural and artificial vegetation along environmental gradient will be crucial for sustainability of restored vegetation on the LP. Here, aboveground biomass (AGB) and soil water content (SWC) of natural and artificial vegetation were measured in steppe, forest-steppe and forest zone from 2008 to 2017 on the Yanhe River catchment. The results showed that artificial vegetation consumed more soil water than natural vegetation in steppe and forest-steppe zone, while it did not over consume soil water in forest zone. The AGB of natural vegetation in forest zone was significantly higher than that in steppe and forest-steppe zone. Steppe zone had serious overload of artificial vegetation (overload ratio: 5.35), while no overload occurred in forest zone. So, we suggest a cessation of artificial vegetation expansion in steppe zone. In steppe zone, planting artificial vegetation increased competition intensity between AGB and SWC, and the relative benefit tended to be AGB, their competition intensity was the highest. In forest zone, the trade-off relationship between AGB and SWC had no significant difference between natural and artificial vegetation, and the competition intensity between the AGB and SWC was the weakest. Optimal vegetation restoration approach would maintain the balance between vegetation restoration and soil water. To obtain social and ecological sustainability on the LP, vegetation suitability and suitable management along different environmental gradients should be considered and identified in the future revegetation project.

How afforestation affects the water cycle in drylands: A process-based comparative analysis

The world's largest afforestation programs implemented by China made a great contribution to the global "greening up." These programs have received worldwide attention due to its contribution toward achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. However, emerging studies have suggested that these campaigns, when not properly implemented, resulted in unintended ecological and water security concerns at the regional scale. While mounting evidence shows that afforestation causes substantial reduction in water yield at the watershed scale, process-based studies on how forest plantations alter the partitioning of rainwater and affect water balance components in natural vegetation are still lacking at the plot scale. This lack of science-based data prevents a comprehensive understanding of forest-related ecosystem services such as soil conservation and water supply under climate change. The present study represents the first "Paired Plot" study of the water balance of afforestation on the Loess Plateau. We investigate the effects of forest structure and environmental factors on the full water cycle in a typical multilayer plantation forest composed of black locust, one of the most popular tree species for plantations worldwide. We measure the ecohydrological components of a black locust versus natural grassland on adjacent sites. The startling finding of this study is that, contrary to the general belief, the understory-instead of the overstory-was the main water consumer in this plantation. Moreover, there is a strict physiological regulation of forest transpiration. In contrast to grassland, annual seepage under the forest was minor in years with an average rainfall. We conclude that global long-term greening efforts in drylands require careful ecohydrologic evaluation so that green and blue water trade-offs are properly addressed. This is especially important for reforestation-based watershed land management, that aims at carbon sequestration in mitigating climate change while maintaining regional water security, to be effective on a large scale.

Tree Water Dynamics in a Semi-Arid, Pinus brutia Forest

This study aims to examine interactions between tree characteristics, sap flow, and environmental variables in an open Pinus brutia (Ten.) forest with shallow soil. We examined radial and azimuthal variations of sap flux density (Jp), and also investigated the occurrence of hydraulic redistribution mechanisms, quantified nocturnal tree transpiration, and analyzed the total water use of P. brutia trees during a three-year period. Sap flow and soil moisture sensors were installed onto and around eight trees, situated in the foothills of the Troodos Mountains, Cyprus. Radial observations showed a linear decrease of sap flux densities with increasing sapwood depth. Azimuthal differences were found to be statistically insignificant. Reverse sap flow was observed during low vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and negative air temperatures. Nocturnal sap flow was about 18% of the total sap flow. Rainfall was 507 mm in 2015, 359 mm in 2016, and 220 mm in 2017. Transpiration was 53%, 30%, and 75%, respectively, of the rainfall in those years, and was affected by the distribution of the rainfall. The trees showed an immediate response to rainfall events, but also exploited the fractured bedrock. The transpiration and soil moisture levels over the three hydrologically contrasting years showed that P. brutia is well-adapted to semi-arid Mediterranean conditions.
