Effects of Physical Activity on Mobile Phone Addiction Among College Students: The Chain-Based Mediating Role of Negative Emotion and E-Health Literacy

Background

Smartphones have become an important tool for college students' study and life, but mobile phone addiction caused by excessive dependence use of cell phones can have serious negative impacts on college students' mental health, life behaviors, and so on. It is urgent to explore the causes and influence mechanisms of college students' cell phone addiction.

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between physical exercise and mobile phone addiction among Chinese college students and the mediating role of negative affect and e-health literacy between the two.

Methods

The stratified sampling method was used to investigate the physical activity, mobile phone addiction, negative emotion and e-health literacy of 4621 university students in Jiangsu Province using the Physical Activity Rating scale, Mobile Phone Addiction scale, Depression-anxiety-stress scale and E-Health Literacy scale, Thus the data were statistically analysed using SPSS 26.0 and AMOS 23.0.

Results

(1) Physical exercise was significantly negatively correlated with mobile phone addiction and negative emotion among college students (r=-.713, P<0.01; r=-.571, P<0.01), and physical exercise was significantly positively correlated with e-health literacy (r=0.616, P<0.01); (2) Negative emotion and e-health literacy played independent mediating roles between physical exercise and mobile phone addiction, respectively; (3) Negative emotion and e-health literacy played chain mediating roles between physical exercise and mobile phone addiction.

Conclusion

This study explored the potential mechanisms of cell phone addiction in college students and found that physical activity can influence Internet addiction through the independent mediating effect including the chain mediating effect of negative emotions and e-health literacy. This study further reveals the mechanism of action of physical exercise affecting college students' cell phone addiction, and provides some reference value for the prevention and intervention of college students cell phone addiction.

Analysis of Nursing Students' Nonverbal Communication Patterns during Simulation Practice: A Pilot Study

Therapeutic communication, of which nonverbal communication is a vital component, is an essential skill for professional nurses. The aim of this study is to assess the possibility of incorporating computer analysis programs into nursing education programs to improve the nonverbal communication skills of those preparing to become professional nurses. In this pilot observational study, the research team developed a computer program for nonverbal communication analysis including facial expressions and poses. The video clip data captured during nursing simulation practice by 10 3rd- and 4th-grade nursing students at a university in South Korea involved two scenarios of communication with a child's mother regarding the child's pre- and post-catheterization care. The dominant facial expressions varied, with sadness (30.73%), surprise (30.14%), and fear (24.11%) being the most prevalent, while happiness (7.96%) and disgust (6.79%) were less common. The participants generally made eye contact with the mother, but there were no instances of light touch by hand and the physical distance for nonverbal communication situations was outside the typical range. These results confirm the potential use of facial expression and pose analysis programs for communication education in nursing practice.

Impact of dyadic practice on the clinical self-efficacy and empathy of nursing students

BACKGROUND

Dyadic practice of learners creates supportive learning. So far, few studies have investigated the impact of this approach on students' empathy and self-efficacy. This study aimed to investigate the effect of dyadic practice on nursing students' clinical self-efficacy and empathy.

METHODS

This study was based on a pretest-posttest randomized group from September to December 2018. All the junior nursing students (n = 44) were divided into intervention (n = 22) and control groups (n = 22) using stratified random sampling. The intervention group was trained for 6 days as student dyads, while the control group was under the supervision of an instructor and worked individually. The students' levels of empathy and self-efficacy were evaluated on the first day (pretest) and the last day (post-test) by The Self-Efficacy in Clinical Performance Scale and Mehrabian and Epstein empathy scale. The data were analyzed using the SPSS software by Fisher's exact test, Mann-Whitney test, independent t-test paired t-test, Wilcoxon signed-rank, and Analysis of covariance.

RESULTS

Dyadic practice increased empathy in the intervention group compared to the control group (P < 0.001). The adjusted mean of total empathy in the intervention group was 21.1 degrees higher than the adjusted mean of total empathy in the control group. However, no significant differences were found between the two groups in clinical self-efficacy (P = 0.762).

CONCLUSIONS

The employment of this approach seems helpful in creating an empathic atmosphere. However, further studies are required to prove the effectiveness of this method on self-efficacy.

The Influence of Reducing Clinical Practicum Anxiety on Nursing Professional Employment in Nursing Students with Low Emotional Stability

Nursing students experience anxiety during clinical practicum, which may interfere with their learning in clinical practice and nursing employment after graduation. This study explored: (1) the factors of the difference in anxiety levels between pre- and post-practicum in nursing students; (2) identified their anxiety events in a clinical environment; and (3) the correlation between emotional stability and 5-year nursing professional employment. The study was designed as a mixed method. A longitudinal secondary analysis method and a qualitative approach with open questionnaire were conducted. The emotional stability subscale of Lai’s Personality Inventory and the Beck Anxiety Inventory, as well as open questionnaires were administered. Research data were collected through the purposive sampling of 237 nursing students (mean age was 20.96, SD = 1.29) of 4.2% male and 95.8% female in a central Taiwan hospital in 2013, and the participants were followed up in 2021 to show 70% in clinical service. Most of the nursing students exhibited significantly decreased anxiety levels in the post-practicum period. Compared to nursing students with high emotional stability, those with low emotional stability exhibited higher differences in their anxiety levels between the pre- and post-practicum periods. Low emotional stability is critical in a pre-practicum BAI score. However, the high pre-practicum BAI score would decrease to normal range after enrolling to practicum setting. So, as to their 5-year nursing professional employment after graduation. Teachers foster a positive learning atmosphere that emphasizes the importance of “we are family” to students. Teachers and advisors need to make efforts in leading the low emotional stability nursing students to learn effective coping and adapting strategies in clinical practicum.
