Effect of Facial Skin Temperature on the Perception of Anxiety: A Pilot Study

Does use of animal therapy during dental care help to reduce anxiety in children and adolescents? A systematic review

BACKGROUND

Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) is considered a useful technique to reduce anxiety in children and adolescents in medical settings.

AIM

To investigate whether the use of AAT helps to reduce anxiety during dental care in children and adolescents.

DESIGN

Systematic review that included randomized and nonrandomized clinical trials with children up to 18-years of age undergoing dental appointments. The databases Embase, Cochrane, Pubmed/Medline, LILACS, PsycInfo, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched including gray literature. Random-effects meta-analyses using mean difference (MD) and narrative synthesis (vote counting) were implemented. Risk of bias was assessed using RoB2 for randomized clinical trials. The certainty of the evidence was performed using GRADE.

RESULTS

A total of 1103 references were identified, and after a two-phase selection, three studies were included. Anxiety, behavior, and pain were the outcomes. A meta-analysis with 146 participants was performed for anxiety at three time points: before treatment (MD -0.40, CI: -1.06 to 0.26; I²  = 0%; p = .24), during treatment (MD -3.64, CI: -11.18 to 3.91; I²  = 94%; p = .34), and after treatment (MD -5.97, CI: -17.08 to 5.14; I²  = 98% p = .29). There was no difference during dental treatment with or without ATT (dogs), as well as for narrative analysis for any outcome. The risk of bias was high mainly because of the randomization and outcome measurement.

CONCLUSION

There is no evidence to support or refute that the presence of AAT during dental care can help reduce anxiety in children (5-11 years). Studies with larger samples are suggested. Protocol registration (CRD42021293593).

Impact of Post-Covid-19 on driver behaviour: A perspective towards pandemic-sustained transportation

INTRODUCTION

With the announcement of novel Coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) as a pandemic by World Health Organization (WHO) in March 2020, the whole world went into a lockdown that heavily affected human economic and social life. Since December 2020, with the discovery of effective vaccines, the world is now returning to some normality, particularly for those who are vaccinated. The multimodal transportation has resumed with majority of vaccinated drivers being back on road, driving to their work, and providing transport services. However, there are still several long-term Post-Covid-19 factors, affecting driver health and psychology.

METHODS

The study deployed a systematic search strategy and selected 62 research publications after rigorous evaluation of the literature. The review was based on (1) forming the inclusion and exclusion criteria, (2) selecting the appropriate keywords, and (3) searching of relevant publications and assessing the eligible articles.

RESULTS

A broad perspective study is carried out to gauge the impact of Post-Covid-19 scenarios on the driver physical health and mindset in the context of road safety and pandemic-sustained transportation. It was found that the Post-Covid-19 factors such as wearing face-mask during driving, taking oral anti-viral drugs, and fear of contracting disease, significantly impact the driver's performance and situation awareness skills. The analysis suggested that driver's health vitals and psychological driving awareness can be precisely detected through hybrid driver state monitoring methods.

CONCLUSIONS

The paper conducts a comprehensive review of the published work and provides unique research opportunities to counteract the challenges involved in precise monitoring of driver behaviour under the effects of different Post-Covid-19 factors. The perspective suggested the possible solutions to live with the pandemic in the context of pandemic-sustained transportation.

Regression model for predicting core body temperature in infrared thermal mass screening

With fever being one of the most prominent symptoms of COVID-19, the implementation of fever screening has become commonplace around the world to help mitigate the spread of the virus. Non-contact methods of temperature screening, such as infrared (IR) forehead thermometers and thermal cameras, benefit by minimizing infection risk. However, the IR temperature measurements may not be reliably correlated with actual core body temperatures. This study proposed a trained model prediction using IR-measured facial feature temperatures to predict core body temperatures comparable to an FDA-approved product. The reference core body temperatures were measured by a commercially available temperature monitoring system. Optimal inputs and training models were selected by the correlation between predicted and reference core body temperature. Five regression models were tested during the study. The linear regression model showed the lowest minimum-root-mean-square error (RSME) compared with reference temperatures. The temple and nose region of interest (ROI) were identified as optimal inputs. This study suggests that IR temperature data could provide comparatively accurate core body temperature prediction for rapid mass screening of potential COVID cases using the linear regression model. Using linear regression modeling, the non-contact temperature measurement could be comparable to the SpotOn system with a mean SD of ± 0.285 °C and MAE of 0.240 °C.

Effect of Psychophysiological Stress and Socio-Emotional Competencies on the Clinical Performance of Nursing Students during a Simulation Practice

Psychophysiological stress can affect the cognitive response and effective learning of students during medical simulation practices. This study aimed to explore the effect of psychophysiological stress and socio-emotional competencies on clinical performance during a simulation experience. A pre-test/post-test design was used to assess physiological (blood pressure, heart rate and blood oxygen saturation) and psychological parameters (stress and anxiety) as well as socio-emotional skills (cognitive load, self-efficacy and motivation) in nursing students (n = 40) before and after the simulation of a cardiopulmonary resuscitation practice. Physiological responses showed statistically significant differences between pre-test and post-test conditions for blood pressure and heart rate (p < 0.0001). Moderate and significant correlations were also observed when comparing self-efficacy with stress (r = −0.445, p = 0.004), anxiety (r = −0.467, p = 0.002) and motivation (r = −0.406, p = 0.009) measures. Similarly, cognitive-load dimensions were significantly associated with either physiological (r = −0.335, p = 0.034) or psychological (r = −0.448, p = 0.004) indicators. The analysis of multiple regression models revealed a relationship between the effectiveness of the simulated experience, post-test blood oxygen saturation, heart rate, workload and self-efficacy (R² = 0.490; F (3, 39) = 8.305; p < 0.0001; d = 1.663). Therefore, the evaluation of psychophysiological parameters and socio-emotional skills seems to provide a promising framework for predicting the quality of simulated clinical practices.
