Unraveling the Modulation of Controlled Salinity Stress on Morphometric Traits, Mineral Profile, and Bioactive Metabolome Equilibrium in Hydroponic Basil

Harnessing controlled-environment systems for enhanced production of medicinal plants

Medicinal plants are valued for their contributions to human health. However, the growing demand for medicinal plants and the concerns regarding their quality and sustainability have prompted the reassessment of conventional production practices. Controlled-environment cropping systems, such as vertical farms, offer a transformative approach to production of medicinal plants. By enabling precise control over environmental factors, such as light, carbon dioxide, temperature, humidity, nutrients, and airflow, controlled environments can improve the consistency, concentration, and yield of bioactive phytochemicals in medicinal plants. This review explores the potential of controlled-environment systems for enhancing production of medicinal plants. First, we describe how controlled environments can overcome the limitations of conventional production in improving the quality of medicinal plants. Next, we propose strategies based on plant physiology to manipulate environmental conditions for enhancing the levels of bioactive compounds in plants. These strategies include improving photosynthetic carbon assimilation, light spectrum signalling, purposeful stress elicitation, and chronoculture. We describe the underlying mechanisms and practical applications of these strategies. Finally, we highlight the major knowledge gaps and challenges that limit the application of controlled environments, and discuss future research directions.

Productive, Morpho-Physiological, and Postharvest Performance of Six Basil Types Grown in a Floating Raft System: A Comparative Study

Basil (Ocimum sp.) is one of the world's most famous culinary fresh herbs, characterized by rapid growth that makes it particularly suitable for hydroponic cultivation. This study aimed to evaluate the adaptability of six types of basil to a closed-loop hydroponic system (floating raft system) and their post-harvest performance. Twenty-three days after transplantation, productivity, morpho-physiological performance, and mineral profile (by ion chromatography) were evaluated. At 3, 6, and 9 days after harvest, the loss of water from the from leaves stored at 10 °C in the dark was evaluated. Although the total fresh production of Thai, Mexican, and Genovese did not differ significantly, the latter provided a higher fresh leaf weight (16.52 g of plant^-1) despite a lower leaf number (30.06 n. of plant^-1). Nine days after harvest, Thai and Mexican showed the lowest water loss. Although Mexican Purple had the lowest net CO₂ assimilation, it accumulated the highest concentration of ascorbic acid (909.41 mg 100 g fw^-1).

Optimizing growing conditions for hydroponic farming of selected medicinal and aromatic plants

This work presents a pipeline for optimizing semi-hydroponic growth conditions and analyzes the impact on the growth and metabolism in three Mentha species (M. arvensis, M. x piperita, or M. spicata) and three Ocimum basilicum genotypes (́Chládek červená́, ́Litrá, or ́Máneś). The plant growth and the content- of nitrogen-containing compounds, phenolics, and terpenoids were determined under different nitrate concentrations and salt stress. Different responses were observed among genotypes for both species. ́Chládek červená́ had the best growth under low nitrate, with lower histamine and higher flavonoid levels. Mentha x piperita was the best mint species performing under low nitrate and salt stress. Altogether, we demonstrate that a combination of phenomics and metabolomics is ideal to identify the optimal growth conditions for these plants and the chemical markers associated with these conditions. Besides, we showed that both primary and secondary metabolites can be good markers for classifying both species.
