Abstract
BACKGROUND A healthy eating pattern such as the Mediterranean-style healthy eating pattern (MED-HEP) is associated with favorable effects on both cardiometabolic risk markers and self-reported health outcomes. Limited evidence exists regarding the influence of the glycemic index (GI) of carbohydrate foods consumed within a healthy eating pattern on self-reported health status and sleep. OBJECTIVES To investigate the effects of a low- compared with high-GI MED-HEP on changes in health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and sleep. METHODS The MEDGICarb-intervention trial is a 12-wk randomized, controlled, parallel multi-center trial in adults with ≥2 features of the metabolic syndrome. Participants consumed an eu-energetic diet profiled as a MED-HEP with either low GI (experimental) or high GI (control). HRQoL and sleep were measured with Medical Outcomes Study 36-item short-form health survey version 2, Pittsburgh sleep quality index, and Epworth Sleepiness Scale at baseline and postintervention. RESULTS One hundred and sixty adults with ≥2 features of the metabolic syndrome completed the intervention [53% females, age 56 ± 10 y, body mass index (kg/m2) 31.0 ± 3.1]. Low- compared with high-GI MED-HEP resulted in differential changes between the groups in the HRQoL domains role physical [5.6 ± 2.2 arbitrary units (AU) compared with -2.5 ± 2.5 AU) and vitality (6.9 ± 1.7 AU compared with 0.0 ± 1.8 AU] (P < 0.05), which were driven mostly by improvements in the low-GI group. There were no significant differences between the MED-HEPs for changes in aggregated physical or mental components or for the other individual domains of HRQoL (physical functioning, bodily pain, general health, social functioning, role emotional, and mental health) or for sleep quality or daytime sleepiness. CONCLUSIONS Low compared to high GI in the context of a MED-HEP resulted in modest improvements in some, but not all, health domains of HRQoL. No major differences were seen between the groups for measures of sleep. This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT03410719.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare patients treated with cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) with healthy sleepers and individuals with past but not current insomnia on multidimensional sleep health. METHODS The study evaluates CBT-I on six dimensions of sleep health (regularity, satisfaction, alertness, timing, efficiency, duration) in a sample of individuals with insomnia compared to two other unique sleep samples. Participants were in one of three groups: insomnia (CUR, n = 299), healthy sleeper (HS, n = 122), or past insomnia (PAST, n = 35). Daily diaries and validated measures were employed to capture six dimensions of sleep health. The CUR group received four 60-minute sessions of CBT-I every 2weeks, and sleep health indices were measured at baseline and post-treatment. The HS and PAST groups were measured only at baseline. RESULTS Results of the pairwise t tests indicated improvements in sleep satisfaction, alertness (fatigue but not sleepiness), timing, efficiency, and duration (Cohen's d=0.22 to 1.55). ANCOVA models revealed significant differences in sleep health scores between treated insomnia patients and the other two sleep groups. Treated patients demonstrated less bedtime and risetime variability, in addition to lower napping duration. Overall, the study observed significant changes in various domains of sleep health after four sessions of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia; however, differences remain when compared to the other groups in the study. CONCLUSION There may be ongoing sleep vulnerability in patients treated with cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia though future inclusion of a control group would increase internal validity. Borrowing from transdiagnostic sleep modules may be helpful to support remaining deficits after cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia.

Abstract
PURPOSE In Australian adults diagnosed with a sleep disorder(s), this cross-sectional study compares the empirical relationships between two generic QoL instruments, the EuroQoL 5-dimension 5-level (EQ-5D-5L) and ICEpop CAPability measure for Adults (ICECAP-A), and three sleep-specific metrics, the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), 10-item Functional Outcomes of Sleep Questionnaire (FOSQ-10), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). METHODS Convergent and divergent validity between item/dimension scores was examined using Kendall's Tau-B correlation, with correlations below 0.30 considered weak, between 0.30 and 0.50 moderate and those above 0.50 strong (indicating that instruments were measuring similar constructs). Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted to identify shared underlying constructs. RESULTS A total of 1509 participants (aged 18-86 years) were included in the analysis. Convergent validity between dimensions/items of different instruments was weak to moderate. A 5-factor EFA solution, representing 'daytime dysfunction', 'fatigue', 'wellbeing', 'physical health', and 'perceived sleep quality', was simplest with close fit and fewest cross-loadings. Each instrument's dimensions/items primarily loaded onto their own factor, except for the EQ-5D-5L and PSQI. Nearly two-thirds of salient loadings were of excellent magnitude (0.72 to 0.91). CONCLUSION Moderate overlap between the constructs assessed by generic and sleep-specific instruments indicates that neither can fully capture the complexity of QoL alone in general disordered sleep populations. Therefore, both are required within economic evaluations. A combination of the EQ-5D-5L and, depending on context, ESS or PSQI offers the broadest measurement of QoL in evaluating sleep health interventions.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aims to investigate the joint effects of cancer and sleep disorders on the health-related quality of life (HRQoL), healthcare resource utilization, and expenditures among US adults. METHODS Utilizing the 2018-2019 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) database, a sample of 25,274 participants was categorized into four groups based on cancer and sleep disorder status. HRQoL was assessed using the VR-12 questionnaire. Generalized linear model (GLM) with a log-linear regression model combined gamma distribution was applied for the analysis of healthcare expenditure data. RESULTS Individuals with both cancer and sleep disorders (C+/S+) exhibited notably lower physical health (PCS) and mental health (MCS) scores-1.45 and 1.87 points lower, respectively. They also showed significantly increased clinic visits (2.12 times), outpatient visits (3.59 times), emergency visits (1.69 times), and total medical expenditures (2.08 times) compared to those without cancer or sleep disorders (C-/S-). In contrast, individuals with sleep disorders alone (C-/S+) had the highest number of prescription drug usage (2.26 times) and home health care days (1.76 times) compared to the reference group (C-/S-). CONCLUSIONS Regardless of cancer presence, individuals with sleep disorders consistently reported compromised HRQoL. Furthermore, those with cancer and sleep disorders experienced heightened healthcare resource utilization, underscoring the considerable impact of sleep disorders on overall quality of life. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS The findings of this study address the importance of sleep disorders among cancer patients and their potential implications for cancer care. Healthcare professionals should prioritize screening, education, and tailored interventions to support sleep health in this population.

Abstract
PURPOSE Several studies have examined the relationship between sleep quality and health-related quality of life (HRQOL). However, there are a lack of generalizable data on this association in Singapore. Our study aimed to (1) investigate the association between sleep quality and HRQOL and (2) examine whether age moderated these associations. METHODS Data were obtained from nationwide Singapore Mental Health Study 2016 (n = 6126, response rate = 69.5%). Sleep quality was assessed using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) where higher scores indicate poorer sleep quality. HRQOL [Physical component summary (PCS) and Mental component summary (MCS)] were measured using 12-item Short-Form Survey. Associations were investigated using multivariable linear regression models, adjusted for sociodemographic, physical, and mental comorbidities. Interactions between age and sleep quality were examined by including interaction terms individually. RESULTS Poorer PSQI score was significantly associated with lower PCS (β = - 0.44) and lower MCS (β = - 0.73). Among PSQI components, lower PCS was significantly associated with subjective sleep quality (β = - 1.06), sleep duration (β = - 0.30), sleep disturbance (β = - 0.33), and daytime dysfunction (β = - 0.75). Lower MCS was significantly associated with subjective sleep quality (β = - 1.36), sleep latency (β = - 0.24), sleep disturbance (β = - 0.16), using of sleeping medication (β = - 1.12), and daytime dysfunction (β = - 2.08). Age moderated the association between PSQI score with PCS and MCS. Stronger association between PSQI score and MCS was observed in younger individuals (β = - 0.90) than older adults (β = - 0.45). CONCLUSION Our study found that poor sleep quality was associated with HRQOL of certain age groups more than others. Future studies may identify potential mediators to help people with chronic sleep problems.

Abstract
In recent years, research on automated sleep analysis has witnessed significant growth, reflecting advancements in understanding sleep patterns and their impact on overall health. This review synthesizes findings from an exhaustive analysis of 87 papers, systematically retrieved from prominent databases such as Google Scholar, PubMed, IEEE Xplore, and ScienceDirect. The selection criteria prioritized studies focusing on methods employed, signal modalities utilized, and machine learning algorithms applied in automated sleep analysis. The overarching goal was to critically evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the proposed methods, shedding light on the current landscape and future directions in sleep research. An in-depth exploration of the reviewed literature revealed a diverse range of methodologies and machine learning approaches employed in automated sleep studies. Notably, K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Ensemble Learning Methods, and Support Vector Machine (SVM) emerged as versatile and potent classifiers, exhibiting high accuracies in various applications. However, challenges such as performance variability and computational demands were observed, necessitating judicious classifier selection based on dataset intricacies. In addition, the integration of traditional feature extraction methods with deep structures and the combination of different deep neural networks were identified as promising strategies to enhance diagnostic accuracy in sleep-related studies. The reviewed literature emphasized the need for adaptive classifiers, cross-modality integration, and collaborative efforts to drive the field toward more accurate, robust, and accessible sleep-related diagnostic solutions. This comprehensive review serves as a solid foundation for researchers and practitioners, providing an organized synthesis of the current state of knowledge in automated sleep analysis. By highlighting the strengths and challenges of various methodologies, this review aims to guide future research toward more effective and nuanced approaches to sleep diagnostics.

Abstract
The purpose of this paper was to examine the physical, emotional, social and school functioning domains of quality of life of individuals with Fragile X Syndrome, in relation to mental health and sleep patterns to gain a better understanding of how these aspects are affected by the disorder. This study included 119 individuals with Fragile X Syndrome who were given different cognitive examinations by a neuropsychologist or by parent-proxy questionnaires. This study focused on the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQoL), the Anxiety, Depression and Mood Scale (ADAMS), the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ), but did include other cognitive tests (Vineland Adaptive Behaviour Scales, Nonverbal IQ, Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule). We identified significant associations between decreases in emotional, social and school domains of PedsQoL and the ADAMS subtests of Generalized Anxiety, Manic/Hyperactivity and Obsessive/Compulsivity, with the subtest of Depressed Mood having associations with lower physical and emotional domains. We also identified a significant impact between CSHQ subtests of Sleep Anxiety, Night Wakings, Daytime Sleepiness, and Parasomnia with the emotional and school domains of PedsQoL. There were associations connecting school functioning with Bedtime Resistance, and additional associations connecting emotional functioning with Sleep Duration and Sleep Onset Delay. Physical functioning was also associated with Sleep Anxiety. Our study shows how mental health and sleep defects impact improper sleep patterns and mental health which leads to decreases in the quality of life for individuals with FXS, and how it is important to screen for these symptoms in order to alleviate issues.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Patients with dentofacial deformity (DFD) requiring orthognathic treatment have poor aesthetics, jaw function and psychological well-being, which potentially affect the quality of life. This study aimed to investigate the health-related general, oral and orthognathic quality of life, jaw function and sleep-disordered breathing at different stages of orthognathic surgical treatment. METHODS A total of 120 consecutive patients with DFD were recruited and grouped as pre-orthodontic treatment (group 1), pre-surgery (group 2), 4 months post-surgery (group 3), 24 months post-surgery (group 4) and in addition 30 controls without DFD (group 0). Outcomes were assessed using general health Short Form Survey (SF-36), Oral Health Impact (OHIP-14), Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ), STOP-Bang and Jaw Function Limitation Scale (JFLS) questionnaires. In addition, presence or absence of pain was recorded. Data were tested with analysis of variance, Kruskal-Wallis test, Tukey post hoc test and structural equation modelling (SEM). RESULTS Results revealed SF-36 (p = .814) and STOP-Bang (p = .143) total scores did not differ between control and treatment groups. In contrast, OHIP-14, OQLQ and JFLS total scores differed between groups (p = .001). Higher scores were observed in groups 1 (p = .001), 2 (p = .001) and 3 (p = .041) compared to group 0, indicating poor oral health in patients with DFD. Importantly, in group 4, oral health-related quality of life was better, and OHIP-14 (p = .936) and JFLS (p = .572) scores did not differ from controls. OQLQ scores of group 4 were significantly lower than group 1 (p = .001) but higher than group 0 (p = .013). SEM results revealed a significant negative associations of pain with JFLS and OQLQ; OHIP-14 with OQLQ; OHIP-14 with SF-36; and finally STOP-Bang with SF-36. Positive associations were observed between JFLS and OHIP-14; OHIP-14 and OQLQ. CONCLUSION Oral health-related quality of life and jaw function appears to be improved 24 months after orthognathic surgery. Pain and limitation in jaw function had a negative association with health-related quality of life.

Abstract
Due to worldwide demographic change, the number of older persons in the population is increasing. Aging is accompanied by changes of sleep structure, deposition of beta-amyloid (Aß) and tau proteins and vascular changes and can turn into mild cognitive impairment (MCI) as well as dementia. Sleep disorders are discussed both as a risk factor for and as a consequence of MCI/dementia. Cross-sectional and longitudinal population-based as well as case-control studies revealed sleep disorders, especially sleep-disorderded breathing (SDB) and excessive or insufficient sleep durations, as risk factors for all-cause MCI/dementia. Regarding different dementia types, SDB was especially associated with vascular dementia while insomnia/insufficient sleep was related to an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Scarce and still inconsistent evidence suggests that therapy of sleep disorders, especially continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in SDB, can improve cognition in patients with sleep disorders with and without comorbid dementia and delay onset of MCI/dementia in patients with sleep disorders without previous cognitive impairment. Regarding potential pathomechanisms via which sleep disorders lead to MCI/dementia, disturbed sleep, chronic sleep deficit and SDB can impair glymphatic clearance of beta-amyloid (Aß) and tau which lead to amyloid deposition and tau aggregation resulting in changes of brain structures responsible for cognition. Orexins are discussed to modulate sleep and Aß pathology. Their diurnal fluctuation is suppressed by sleep fragmentation and the expression suppressed at the point of hippocampal atrophy, contributing to the progression of dementia. Additionally, sleep disorders can lead to an increased vascular risk profile and vascular changes such as inflammation, endothelial dysfunction and atherosclerosis which can foster neurodegenerative pathology. There is ample evidence indicating that changes of sleep structure in aging persons can lead to dementia and also evidence that therapy of sleep disorder can improve cognition. Therefore, sleep disorders should be identified and treated early.

Abstract
Evidence for acute or long-term coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection is relatively limited. We aimed to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 infection on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in the Japanese population. Eligible study participants were 13,365 employees and their dependents who answered questionnaires at baseline and 18 months later and who had at least 6 months of continuous enrolment before and after baseline. Of the 711 study participants who developed COVID-19 infection, 29.0% reported a decline in HRQoL, whereas 25.2% of uninfected participants reported a decline. The adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) for the association between COVID-19 infection and declines in HRQoL in the age categories of less than 30 years, 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60 years or higher were 0.54 (0.15-1.92), 1.70 (1.03-2.81), 1.14 (0.82-1.57), 1.05 (0.77-1.42), and 0.87 (0.46-1.64), respectively. This study demonstrates a differential association between COVID-19 infection and declines in HRQoL by age group. A 1.7-fold increase in the odds of negative changes in HRQoL was observed in only those in their 30s. Further studies are needed to elucidate differences in the impact of COVID-19 infection on HRQoL between younger people such as those in their 30s and the older population.

Abstract
The pathophysiology of recurrent isolated sleep paralysis (RISP) has yet to be fully clarified. Very little research has been performed on electroencephalographic (EEG) signatures outside RISP episodes. This study aimed to investigate whether sleep is disturbed even without the occurrence of a RISP episode and in a stage different than conventional REM sleep. 17 RISP patients and 17 control subjects underwent two consecutive full-night video-polysomnography recordings. Spectral analysis was performed on all sleep stages in the delta, theta, and alpha band. EEG microstate (MS) analysis was performed on the NREM 3 phase due to the overall high correlation of subject template maps with canonical templates. Spectral analysis showed a significantly higher power of theta band activity in REM and NREM 2 sleep stages in RISP patients. The observed rise was also apparent in other sleep stages. Conversely, alpha power showed a downward trend in RISP patients' deep sleep. MS maps similar to canonical topographies were obtained indicating the preservation of prototypical EEG generators in RISP patients. RISP patients showed significant differences in the temporal dynamics of MS, expressed by different transitions between MS C and D and between MS A and B. Both spectral analysis and MS characteristics showed abnormalities in the sleep of non-episodic RISP subjects. Our findings suggest that in order to understand the neurobiological background of RISP, there is a need to extend the analyzes beyond REM-related processes and highlight the value of EEG microstate dynamics as promising functional biomarkers of RISP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fatigue and impaired health-related quality of life (HRQoL) are common among kidney transplant recipients (KTR). We hypothesized that both may partially be attributable to poor sleep. METHODS Cross-sectional and longitudinal data of KTR enrolled in the TransplantLines Biobank and Cohort Study were used. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire. Individual strength (i.e. a composite of fatigue, concentration, motivation and physical activity), societal participation and HRQoL were assessed using validated questionnaires. RESULTS We included 872 KTR (39% female, age 56 ± 13 years) and 335 healthy controls. In total, 33% of male KTR and 49% of female KTR reported poor sleep quality, which was higher compared with male and female healthy controls (19% and 28%, respectively, P < .001 for both). In logistic regression analyses, female sex, anxiety, active smoking, low protein intake, physically inactive lifestyle, low plasma magnesium concentration, using calcineurin inhibitors, not using mTOR inhibitors and using benzodiazepine agonists were associated with poor sleep quality. In adjusted linear regression analyses, poor sleep was strongly and independently associated with lower individual strength [standardized β (st.β) = 0.59, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.45 to 0.74, P < .001], poorer societal participation (frequency: st.β = -0.17, 95% CI -0.32 to -0.01, P = .04; restrictions: st.β = -0.36, 95% CI -0.51 to -0.21, P < .001; satisfaction: st.β = -0.44, 95% CI -0.59 to -0.28, P < .001) and lower HRQoL (physical: st.β = -0.53, 95% CI -0.68 to -0.38, P < .001; mental: st.β = -0.64, 95% CI -0.78 to -0.50, P < .001). The associations with poorer societal participation and lower HRQoL were strongly mediated by individual strength (P < .001 for all), yet the suggested direct effects of poor sleep quality on HRQoL remained significant (Pphysical = .03, Pmental = .002). Longitudinal data of 292 KTR showed that sleep quality improves after kidney transplantation in males (P < .001), but not in females (P = .9). CONCLUSIONS Poor sleep quality is common among KTR, and may be a potential target to improve fatigue, societal participation and HRQoL among KTR.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study assessed the effects of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) on mental health, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and multimorbidity in Korean adults. METHODS The study included 8030 participants from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey Ⅷ (2019-2020). The risk of OSA was assessed using STOP-BANG questionnaire. Depression was measured using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and stress was measured using a questionnaire. HRQoL was determined by EuroQol 5-dimension (EQ-5D) and Health-related Quality of Life Instrument with 8 Items (HINT-8) scores. Multimorbidity was defined as the presence of 2 or more chronic diseases. A complex sample multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted. RESULTS Participants with a high OSA risk were more likely to a have high PHQ-9 score (OR 4.31, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.80-6.65), total depression (OR 4.07, 95% CI 2.67-6.19) stress (OR 2.33, 95% CI 1.85-2.95), lower EQ-5D (OR 2.88, 95% CI 2.00-4.15) and HINT-8 scores (OR 2.87, 95% CI 1.65-4.98), and multimorbidity (OR 2.62, 95% CI 2.01-3.41) than participants with low OSA risk. High OSA risk was significantly associated with all EQ-5D and HINT-8 items. CONCLUSIONS This study adds to the few population-based studies showing associations between mental health, HRQoL, and multimorbidity using nationwide data. OSA prevention might be helpful for good mental health, improving HRQoL, and comorbidity burdens. The results provide novel insights regarding the association between sleep apnea and multimorbidity.

Abstract
The introduction of Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) in orthodontics has added a new tool to diagnosis and treatment planning. The aim of this prospective clinical trial was to investigate the changes in the dimensions of the naso-maxillary complex in growing patients after RPE using CBCT. A total of 16 growing children (8 females, 6 males) with a mean age of 11, 12 ± 1 and 86 years underwent RPE as part of their comprehensive orthodontic treatment. CBCT scans were obtained before RPE (T1), immediately after RPE (T2) and 6 months after RPE (T3). The dimensions of the nasal width, nasal floor and the aperture of the midpalatal suture were calculated in different coronal slices of CBCT. Evaluation of the mean value variance per measurement at the three time intervals were performed using the paired Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Differences between the three time intervals were assessed by performing Multiple Pairwise Comparisons. A statistically significant increase in all measurements was seen immediately after RPE expansion (T2–T1) and six months after expansion (T3–T1). Between the end of expansion and 6 months in retention (T3–T2), a decrease was observed for all measurements. RPE can cause expansion of the nasal cavity in growing patients. The expansion of the midpalatal suture follows a triangular pattern of opening.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Insomnia has been closely associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) including myocardial infarction (MI). Our study aims to assess the eligibility of insomnia as a potential risk factor for MI. METHODS PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched using terms; such as "Insomnia" and "MI." Only observational controlled studies with data on the incidence of MI among insomniacs were included. Revman software version 5.4 was used for the analysis. RESULTS Our pooled analysis showed a significant association between insomnia and the incidence of MI compared with noninsomniacs (relative risk [RR] = 1.69, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.41-2.02, p < .00001). Per sleep duration, we detected the highest association between ≤5 h of sleep, and MI incidence compared to 7-8 h of sleep (RR = 1.56, 95% CI = 1.41-1.73). Disorders of initiating and maintaining sleep were associated with increased MI incidence (RR = 1.13, 95% CI = 1.04-1.23, p = .003). However, subgroup analysis of nonrestorative sleep and daytime dysfunction showed an insignificant association with MI among both groups (RR = 1.06, 95% CI = 0.91-1.23, p = .46). Analysis of age, follow-up duration, sex, and comorbidities showed a significant association in insomniacs. CONCLUSION Insomnia and ≤5 h of sleep are highly associated with increased incidence of MI; an association comparable to that of other MI risk factors and as such, it should be considered as a risk factor for MI and to be incorporated into MI prevention guidelines.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There could be several possible mechanisms on how chronic conditions relate to sleep problems in older persons; for instance, pain and sleep have a strong link and depressive symptoms are similarly associated with sleep problems. The present study explored whether pain and depressive symptoms are mediators in the relationship between multi-morbidity and sleep problems among older adults. METHODS Study utilized data from the Longitudinal Aging Study in India (LASI) with a sample of 31,464 older adults age 60 years and above. Multivariable logistic regression along with mediation analysis using Karlson-Holm-Breen (KHB) method was conducted. RESULTS A proportion of 14.8% of the participants suffered from sleep problems, whereas, 22.5% and 8.7% of older adults had multi-morbidity and had depressive symptoms, respectively. Also, around 10.3% of older adults reported pain and received no medication for the relief of pain, whereas 29.3% of older adults reported pain and received some type of medication for the relief of pain. Older adults with multi-morbidity had higher odds of suffering from sleep problems [adjusted odds ratio (aOR):1.26, confidence interval (CI):1.10-1.45] than those who had no multi-morbidity. Older adults who reported pain but received no medication for the relief of pain [aOR: 1.90, CI: 1.64-2.22] or reported pain and received medication for the relief of pain [aOR: 1.82, CI:1.62-2.04] and those who had depressive symptoms [aOR: 2.21, CI:1.89-2.57%] had higher odds of suffering from sleep problems compared to those who did not report pain and had no depressive symptoms, respectively. Around 11.2% of the association of multi-morbidity with sleep problems was mediated by pain and 4.3% of such association was mediated by depressive symptoms. CONCLUSION Pain and depressive symptoms were found to mediate the association between multi-morbidity and sleep problems; therefore, reducing pain and depressive symptoms may be considered to improve sleep in older multi-morbid patients.

Abstract
Obstructive sleep apnea is known to be an overall public health problem that, among other things, increases morbidity and mortality. Risk factors as well as symptoms of this multidimensional sleep-related breathing disorder negatively affect quality of life. With our study we aimed to expose the association between obstructive sleep apnea and quality of life in the population of Pomerania, Germany. We utilized data from the population-based Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP). Information on health status and risk factors about 4420 participants (2275 women) were gathered within the cohort SHIP-TREND, of which 1209 (559 women) underwent an overnight polysomnography and completed sleep questionnaires. The quality of life of the participants was measured using the Short-Form 12 questionnaire. For our study, an ordinal regression analysis with age, sex, body mass index and the Short-Form 12 health survey as predictors for apnea-hypopnea index was computed. The potential factors affecting quality of life are different between physical and mental dimensions of quality of life. Significant effects were found regarding age, sex, body mass index and the Short-Form 12 Mental Component Score, but not the Physical Component Score.

Abstract
Objective This study aimed to examine the impact of sleep quality on occupational well-being in employees by primarily focusing on the mediating role of occupational self-efficacy. Methods A total of 487 junior staff completed a set of questionnaires comprised Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scale, Occupational Self-efficacy Scale, and occupational well-being measurements. Results The results revealed that both sleep quality and occupational self-efficacy were significantly correlated with occupational well-being. The structural equation modeling analysis and the bootstrap test indicated that occupational self-efficacy partially mediated the effect of poor sleep quality on occupational well-being. Discussion These findings expand upon existing research on the relationship between sleep quality and well-being among occupational workers, shed light on the correlation of poor sleep quality with occupational well-being, and are valuable in promoting the occupational well-being of employees.

Abstract
Sleep problems have been shown to be related to adverse outcomes concerning physical and mental well-being. Furthermore, mental health issues and sleep problems were reported to be highly prevalent among medical students and physicians, and were found to be associated with worse academic and clinical performance in these populations. This study aims to investigate the prevalence of poor sleep to examine the associations between sleep quality and health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and to explore the possible mediating role of sleep in the relationship between psychological distress and HRQoL itself in a sample of medical and dental students attending a large Italian university. Participants (n = 407, mean age: 24.2 ± 2.4) answered an online questionnaire comprising the 21-item Depression Anxiety Stress Scale, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the Short Form-12 health survey. Up to 62% of the participants reported poor sleep quality. Controlling for psychological distress, sleep quality components were found to be associated with physical and mental HRQoL. Mediation analysis showed that overall sleep quality mediated all the single associations between anxiety, depression, and stress and HRQoL. These preliminary findings suggest that the quality of sleep is important for the well-being of medical students and that targeting sleep issues in this academic population may be beneficial.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has deeply disrupted sleep and mental health of people around the world. We aimed to investigate age-based differences in the prevalence of and relationship between sleep quality, pre-sleep arousal, and psychosocial factors during the second wave lockdown of the COVID-19 pandemic in Georgia. Data were collected through an online survey (n = 1117). Participants were categorized into four age groups: 18-29, 30-41, 42-53, and 54-70 years. The youngest participants reported the most prevalent disruption of sleep behavior. Overall, 58.3% of respondents were poor sleepers. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) global score was highest in the youngest age group but the difference was not significant. There was a significant difference in the PSQI component scores for subjective sleep quality, sleep latency, and daytime dysfunction, all being worse in young respondents. We also observed a significantly higher prevalence rate of worse sleep quality in the youngest age group, relative to the pre-pandemic period. On the other hand, the oldest respondents showed significantly greater use of sleeping medications. Significantly higher levels of somatic and cognitive pre-sleep arousal, perceived stress, feeling depressed, anxious, and socially isolated were reported by the youngest age group. Study findings indicate a higher vulnerability of younger people to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Assessment of pre-sleep arousal and implementation of specific, age-based interventions may prove beneficial to improve possible consequences of the pandemic on sleep and mental health.

Abstract
Automated sleep disorder detection is challenging because physiological symptoms can vary widely. These variations make it difficult to create effective sleep disorder detection models which support hu-man experts during diagnosis and treatment monitoring. From 2010 to 2021, authors of 95 scientific papers have taken up the challenge of automating sleep disorder detection. This paper provides an expert review of this work. We investigated whether digital technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) can provide automated diagnosis support for sleep disorders. We followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines during the content discovery phase. We compared the performance of proposed sleep disorder detection methods, involving differ-ent datasets or signals. During the review, we found eight sleep disorders, of which sleep apnea and insomnia were the most studied. These disorders can be diagnosed using several kinds of biomedical signals, such as Electrocardiogram (ECG), Polysomnography (PSG), Electroencephalogram (EEG), Electromyogram (EMG), and snore sound. Subsequently, we established areas of commonality and distinctiveness. Common to all reviewed papers was that AI models were trained and tested with labelled physiological signals. Looking deeper, we discovered that 24 distinct algorithms were used for the detection task. The nature of these algorithms evolved, before 2017 only traditional Machine Learning (ML) was used. From 2018 onward, both ML and Deep Learning (DL) methods were used for sleep disorder detection. The strong emergence of DL algorithms has considerable implications for future detection systems because these algorithms demand significantly more data for training and testing when compared with ML. Based on our review results, we suggest that both type and amount of labelled data is crucial for the design of future sleep disorder detection systems because this will steer the choice of AI algorithm which establishes the desired decision support. As a guiding principle, more labelled data will help to represent the variations in symptoms. DL algorithms can extract information from these larger data quantities more effectively, therefore; we predict that the role of these algorithms will continue to expand.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES This study aimed to quantify the impact of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) on patient and patient's partner health-related quality of life in the form of utility values typically used in health economic evaluations. METHODS A time trade-off study was conducted in a UK general population sample (representing a societal perspective) to elicit utility values, measured on a 0 to 1 scale, for health states with varying obstructive sleep apnea-associated EDS severity. In a time trade-off study, health states are described, and participants "trade off" time in a specific higher severity state for a shorter amount of time in full health. RESULTS Overall, the sample consisted of 104 participants, who were interviewed and took part in the time trade-off exercise to elicit utility values for patient and partner residual EDS health states. The average utility score declined with increasing obstructive sleep apnea-associated EDS severity for both patient (no EDS, 0.926; mild EDS, 0.794; moderate EDS, 0.614; severe EDS, 0.546) and partner (no EDS, 0.955; mild EDS, 0.882; moderate EDS, 0.751; severe EDS, 0.670) health states. CONCLUSIONS These results demonstrate the high impact that EDS in obstructive sleep apnea is estimated to have on patient and partner health-related quality of life. Abstract
BACKGROUND Resistant dextrin, as a prebiotic and functional food, may possess favorable effects in type 2 diabetes. This study was conducted to assess whether supplementation with resistant dextrin can improve sleep and quality of life in obese type 2 diabetic women. RESULTS In this randomized controlled trial, female obese type 2 diabetic patients (n = 76) were randomly assigned into intervention group (n = 38) and placebo group (n = 38), and received 10 g day-1 of resistant dextrin or maltodextrin for a period of 8 weeks, respectively. Sleep quality and quality of life (QOL) were assessed by Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and SF-36 health survey, respectively. Fasting blood samples were driven to measure serum bacterial endotoxin, fasting blood sugar, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), pro-inflammatory/anti-inflammatory biomarkers (IL-18, IL-6, IL-10, TNF-α), and biomarkers of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis function [tryptophan (TRP), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), kynurenine (KYN), cortisol]. Supplementation with resistant dextrin improved sleep (P < 0.001) and QOL (P < 0.001) significantly. It also caused a significant decrease in levels of endotoxin, HbA1c, IL-18, IL-6, TNF-α and a significant increase in IL-10 levels. Significant and positive correlations were found between endotoxin (r = 0.488, P = 0.003), IL-6 (r = 0.436, P = 0.008), IL-18 (r = 0.475, P = 0.003), cortisol (r = 0.545, P = 0.048), KYN/TRP (r = 0.527, P = 0.001), and PSQI scores. CONCLUSIONS It is concluded that resistant dextrin improves sleep and QOL in obese women with type 2 diabetes. Its beneficial effects may be attributed in part to modulation of glycemia, metabolic endotoxemia and subsequently a decrease in biomarkers of inflammation and HPA axis activity. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Poor sleep confers significant morbidities and is highly prevalent among college students in the United States. This research assessed sleep quality and its association with health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Further, because sleep quality research often lacks a theoretical foundation, we applied a theoretical model using selected constructs from the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and Health Belief Model (HBM). A random, stratified sample of undergraduate students participated in an online survey (N = 494). Structural equation modeling assessed the association between theoretical constructs, sleep quality, and HRQOL. The final model fit was acceptable, with ~ 20% of the variance in sleep quality explained by the theoretical constructs and control variables. HBM constructs were indirectly and negatively related to sleep quality, mediated through behavioral intention, and also positively and directly associated with behavioral intention. Behavioral intention was strongly and negatively associated with sleep quality. Approximately 31% of the variance in HRQOL was explained by poor sleep quality, behavioral intention, and gender. Poor sleep was most strongly associated with reduced HRQOL. HBM constructs and behavioral intention from TPB were significantly associated with poor sleep quality, and poor sleep was significantly related to poor HRQOL.

Abstract
Background Healthcare professionals worldwide are prone to sleep disturbance. Such sleep disturbance is associated with lower patient safety and quality of care. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the prevalence of sleep disturbance and determine the effect of work schedule characteristics on sleep disturbance among healthcare professionals in Europe and South Korea. Methods We used the sixth European Working Conditions Survey and the fifth Korean Working Conditions Survey for analyses. The study included 2285 healthcare professionals aged 18–65 years. Work schedule characteristics included shift work, night work, working hours per week, long work hours (i.e., more than 10 hours per shift), quick return to work, having to come to work on short notice, and changes in work schedules. A multiple logistic regression analysis was performed. Results The overall prevalence of sleep disturbance was 37.7%. The multivariate logistic regression model indicated that long work hours, quick return to, having to come to work on short notice, and changes in work schedules were significant factors associated with sleep disturbance among healthcare professionals. Conclusion The findings revealed that several work schedule-related factors were associated with sleep disturbances in healthcare professionals in Europe and Korea. Institutions and policymakers should implement strategies and policies to reduce the unpredictability of work schedules to ensure an adequate rest period between shifts and to reduce sleep disturbances.

Abstract
Finding new solutions for the management of multiple sclerosis (MS) is crucial: further research is needed to study the effect of non-pharmacological interventions on the symptoms and the course of the disease, especially on lifestyle. Benefits from a proper lifestyle are evident not only on a clinical level but also on immune and neuro-endocrine systems. A brief high-impact multidimensional rehabilitation program (b-HIPE) was proposed for a sample of people with MS (pwMS) with a medium level of disease disability. We tested the change on clinical parameters and quality of life (QoL) after participation in B-HIPE. We furthermore decided to measure beta-endorphin and catecholamines concentrations pre- and post-participation in the b-HIPE program, due to the relationship between these hormones and the immune system in neurodegenerative diseases. Our results showed that after the b-HIPE program, an improvement of clinical parameters and QoL occurred. Moreover, we found higher levels of beta-endorphin and noradrenaline after participation in the program. These findings highlight the importance of implementing lifestyle interventions in the clinical management of MS. Furthermore, we hypothesize that the B-HIPE program increased beta-endorphin and noradrenaline levels, helping to reduce the inflammation related to MS disease.

Abstract
The association between sleep problems and quality of life has been well documented and the COVID-19 pandemic seemingly had an impact on both sleep quality and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). However, recent evidence about this relationship among university students is limited. The aims of this study are to investigate the prevalence of poor sleep quality and insomnia and to explore the associations between these outcomes, perceived stress, and HRQoL among Italian university students. An anonymous questionnaire comprising the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, the Insomnia Severity Index, the Short Form-12 health survey, and the Perceived Stress Scale was administered to a convenience sample of 1279 students (1119 females and 160 males, mean age: 23.4 ± 2.5 years) attending one of the largest Italian universities. A total of 65% of the participants showed poor sleep quality, whereas 55% reported insomnia symptoms. Students reporting poor sleep quality and insomnia obtained higher perceived stress scores and lower physical and mental HRQoL scores. Controlling for health-related variables and perceived stress, hierarchical regression analyses showed that sleep quality components added a significant contribution to the prediction of both physical (ΔR2 = 0.1) and mental (ΔR2 = 0.02) HRQoL. As a whole, these findings confirm the relevance of sleep for university students’ well-being and might inform the development of health promotion interventions for this population.

Abstract
Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is the standard treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), but its outcomes for the pregnant are still undefined. This study aims to review current CPAP intervention during pregnancy, discuss published trials, and propose relevant issues that have yet to be addressed satisfactorily about the cardiovascular, metabolic, fetal, and neonatal effects of CPAP treatment during gestation. Two authors independently conducted a systematic review until March 28th, 2021 on PubMed, BVS, and Cochrane Library, using PRISMA guidelines, and risk of bias. Discrepancies were reconciled by a third reviewer. Of 59 identified citations, eight original trials have submitted a total of 90 pregnant women to polysomnography and CPAP therapy. Four studies performed in samples with hypertension or preeclampsia presented blood pressure decrease or maintained the antihypertensive drug dose in the CPAP group. After CPAP utilization, one trial registered cardiac output and stroke volume increase with heart rate and peripheral vascular resistance decrease, which were correlated with birth weight increment. Others documented a higher Apgar in the CPAP group and more fetal movements during CPAP use. There was a reduction in serum uric acid and tumor necrosis factor-alpha in the CPAP groups whose blood pressure decreased. However, two weeks of CPAP use in women with gestational diabetes and OSA did not improve glucose levels but raised the insulin secretion in those adherents to CPAP. Despite these positive results without adverse effects, randomized controlled trials with standardized follow-up in larger populations are required to determine CPAP therapy recommendations in pregnancy.

Abstract
Studies performed across the COVID-19 pandemic waves point to the persistent impact of the pandemic on sleep and mental health. We expand these data by examining insomnia, pre-sleep arousal, psychosocial factors, and retrospective changes in sleep pattern during the COVID-19 second wave lockdown period in Georgia. Data were collected through an online survey (n = 1117). The prevalence rate of probable insomnia disorder was 24.2%. Clinically relevant somatic and cognitive pre-sleep arousal was present in 49.8% and 58.0% of participants, and high levels of anxiety, depression and social isolation were found in 47.0%, 37.3%, 47.2% of respondents, respectively. We observed high prevalence rates of worse sleep quality, delayed bedtimes and risetimes, longer sleep latencies, higher awakenings and shorter sleep durations, relative to the pre-pandemic period. COVID-19-infected participants showed more severe sleep and mental problems. Specific predictors differentially affected insomnia, somatic and cognitive pre-sleep arousal. Depression and COVID-19 infection emerged as vulnerability factors for pre-sleep arousal, which, in turn, was associated with a higher predisposition to insomnia disorder. We confirm the strong deteriorating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on sleep and psychosocial well-being during the second wave lockdown period. The specific association between pre-sleep arousal, insomnia, and psychosocial factors is of clinical relevance for the prevention of severity and persistence of sleep and mental problems across the repeated lockdown/reopening waves. Modulation of pre-sleep arousal may prove beneficial to implement targeted interventions.

Abstract
This study aimed to determine whether both subjective sleep quality and sleep duration are directly associated with quality of life (QOL), as well as indirectly associated with QOL through insomnia symptoms. Individuals aged 20–69 years without mental illness (n = 9305) were enrolled in this web-based cross-sectional survey. The Short Form-8 was used to assess physical and mental QOL. We used the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and extracted items related to subjective sleep quality and sleep duration. Insomnia symptoms were also extracted from the PSQI. The hypothesized models were tested using structural equation modeling. Worse sleep quality, but not shorter sleep duration, was related to worse physical QOL. Both worse sleep quality and shorter sleep duration were related to worse mental QOL. Insomnia symptoms mediated these relationships. Subgroup analyses revealed a U-shaped relationship between sleep duration and physical/mental QOL. However, the relationship between sleep quality and physical/mental QOL was consistent regardless of sleep duration. The results suggest that subjective sleep quality has a more coherent association with QOL than subjective sleep duration. Because of its high feasibility, a questionnaire on overall sleep quality could be a useful indicator in future epidemiological studies of strategies for improving QOL.

Abstract
Background The current work aimed to investigate the mediating role of adiposity traits in the relationship between eating behaviors, sleep quality, socio-demographic factors, and the health-related quality of life in women of reproductive age in northwest of Iran. Methods In the current cross-sectional study, a total of 278 overweight and obese women of reproductive age (20–49 y) were enrolled. Anthropometric assessments were performed. Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) was used for assessment of sleep quality while Short Form 36 (SF-36) questionnaire was used to measure health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire-R18 (TFEQ-R18) was used to measure eating behaviors. Path analysis was used to test the relationships between parameters. Results Age was found to be indirectly and negatively associated with mental component score (MCS) (B = − 0.040; P = 0.049) and physical component score (PCS) (B = − 0.065; P = 0.036) through mediatory effects of obesity. Additionally, education was seen to be indirectly and positively related to MCS (B = 0.529; P = 0.045) and PCS (B = 0.870; P = 0.019), respectively. On the other hand, obesity (B = 0.608; P = 0.018) and PSQI score (B = − 0.240; P = 0.034) had direct associations with MCS. Age (B = − 0.065; P = 0.036) and education (B = 0.870; P = 0.019) were also directly associated with obesity. Conclusions Obesity seemed to mediate the effects of socio-demographic parameters on HRQoL. Poor sleep quality was also related to impairment of HRQoL. Further studies are needed to confirm these results.

Abstract
ABSTRACT It currently remains unclear why some patients with entrapment neuropathies develop neuropathic pain (neuP), whereas others have non-neuP, presumably of nociceptive character. Studying patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), this cross-sectional cohort study investigated changes in somatosensory structure and function as well as emotional well-being specific to the presence and severity of neuP. Patients with CTS (n = 108) were subgrouped by the DN4 questionnaire into those without and with neuP. The latter group was further subdivided into mild and moderate/severe neuP using a pain visual analogue scale. N = 32 participants served as healthy controls. All participants underwent a clinical examination, quantitative sensory testing, electrodiagnostic testing (EDT), and skin biopsy to determine the structural integrity of dermal and intraepidermal nerve fibres. Patients also completed questionnaires evaluating symptom severity and functional deficits, pain distribution, sleep quality, and emotional well-being. The overall prevalence of neuP in patients with CTS was 80%, of which 63% had mild neuP. Symptom severity and functional deficits as well as somatosensory dysfunction was more pronounced with the presence and increasing severity of neuP. No difference was identified among patient groups for EDT and nerve fibre integrity on biopsies. The severity of neuP was accompanied by more pronounced deficits in emotional well-being and sleep quality. Intriguingly, extraterritorial spread of symptoms was more prevalent in patients with moderate/severe neuP, indicating the presence of central mechanisms. NeuP is common in patients with CTS, and its severity is related to the extent of somatosensory dysfunction and a compromise of emotional well-being.

The association between nonrestorative sleep and health-related quality of life in Chinese adults: a cross-sectional study. Qual Life Res 2021; 30:2521-2530. Abstract
PURPOSE Sleep problems are prevalent among the general population and can cause various health problems, which may lead to decreased quality of life. However, little is known about nonrestorative sleep and its implications. This study aimed to examine the association between nonrestorative sleep and health-related quality of life (HRQL) in Chinese adults. METHODS Data were collected through a cross-sectional study of 500 adults in Hong Kong (66.4% female, average age of 39 years). The Short-Form-12 Health Survey version 2 (SF-12v2), Nonrestorative Sleep Scale (NRSS), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, ENRICHD Social Support Instrument, Patient Health Questionnaire, Perceived Stress Scale, and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale were administered. Objective sleep parameters were based on participants' sleep condition over 1 week, as measured using an ActiGraph GT9X Link. RESULTS Mean standardized scores for the physical component summary (PCS) and mental component summary (MCS) of the SF-12v2 and the NRSS were 50.33 ± 6.50, 49.00 ± 9.03, and 64.77 ± 12.75, respectively. After adjusting for sociodemographic and lifestyle characteristics, sleep quality, objective sleep parameters, social support, somatic symptoms, stress, anxiety, and depression, NRSS scores were associated with PCS (b = 0.12, 95%CI: 0.06 to 0.18, p < 0.001) and MCS (b = 0.08, 95%CI: 0.02 to 0.15, p = 0.013) scores. Furthermore, associations of NRSS score with PCS as well as MCS scores were stronger in women than in men. CONCLUSION Nonrestorative sleep is a potentially modifiable risk factor for poor HRQL. Thus, interventions to relieve or decrease nonrestorative sleep could be beneficial for improving HRQL.

Abstract
This study aimed to explore the association between sleep quality and its components and both dimensions of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in a sample of young adults. The sample comprised 337 participants with a mean age of 19.6 y (SD = 2.22). Sleep quality and HRQoL were measured through the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and the SF-12, respectively. Regression analyses were used to investigate the association between sleep quality and HRQoL. Our results confirm the significant association between sleep quality and both physical (p = 0.015; β = −0.138; R2 = 0.07) and mental (p < 0.001; β = −0.348; R2 = 0.22) HRQoL in the adjusted models. However, our results also highlight the differential association between sleep quality and mental and physical HRQoL. Whereas all the sleep quality components (except sleep latency; p = 0.349) were significantly associated with mental HRQoL (p < 0.05), just two subscales (subjective sleep quality; p = 0.021; β = −0.143 and sleep disturbances p = 0.002; β = −0.165) showed a significant association. This study showed that there is a stronger association between sleep quality and mental health than sleep quality and physical health in young adults.

Abstract
PURPOSE Sleep disturbance is a paramount public health concern that besets many modern middle-aged and elderly community residents. Reading is important to adults as it facilitates the completion of daily tasks, and might be associated with sleep issues. The present study aimed to analyze the association between reading and sleep using Chinese national survey data. PATIENTS AND METHODS The 2018 China Family Panel Studies survey data were used, and the target sample was extracted according to age (>40 years). Reading behavior and reading quantity were chosen as independent variables, and sleep duration, sleep-onset time, and sleep quality were selected as dependent variables. A multilevel mixed linear/ordinal logistic regression model was employed to evaluate the association, and restricted cubic splines with 4 knots were employed to flexibly model the association of reading quantity and sleep duration. RESULTS A total of 18,740 adults were selected, and the reading rate was 15.04%. Reading habit was significantly negatively associated with weekday sleep duration, but not with duration at weekends, as determined from the full set of confounders adjusted models. Reading behavior was also associated with delayed sleep-onset time (OR: 0.935, 95% CI: 0.908-0.964), but not with sleep quality. Reading quantity showed a nonlinear relationship with sleep duration, appropriate reading quantity was related with long sleep duration. CONCLUSION Reading was associated with short sleep duration on weekdays, but not with sleep quality. Furthermore, reading was related to late sleep-onset time, and for the middle-aged and elderly Chinese populations, appropriate reading quantity was related with long sleep duration.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Poor global sleep quality is commonly reported in people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and is linked to poorer health-related quality of life (HRQoL). However, understanding is currently limited by a lack of: (1) longitudinal research and (2) research investigating the impact of specific types of problems sleeping on IBD-related outcomes, particularly on HRQoL. DESIGN Observational longitudinal cohort study. METHODS N = 276 participants with IBD completed measures at baseline (T1) and 4 weeks later at T2. Four specific sleep disturbances associated with IBD including sleep apnoea, insomnia, restless legs, and nightmares were measured alongside depression, anxiety and stress, and HRQoL. RESULTS After controlling for participant demographics and clinical characteristics, T1 depression, anxiety, stress, and T1 HRQoL, more severe symptom severity of sleep apnoea (B = -0.30, p < .05) and insomnia symptoms (B = -0.23, p < .05) at T1 significantly predicted poorer HRQoL at T2. However, the experience of restless legs (B = -0.03, p > .87) and nightmares (B = -0.14, p > .11) at T1 did not predict HRQoL. CONCLUSION Symptoms synonymous with sleep apnoea and insomnia might represent modifiable risk factors that provide independent contributions to HRQoL over time in those with IBD. These findings suggest that interventions designed to improve sleep apnoea and insomnia could confer benefits to HRQoL in those with IBD. However, more longitudinal research is needed to understand the contribution of sleep disturbances over the longer term, as well as more randomized controlled trials testing the effect of improving sleep on IBD-related outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study examines the distribution of sleep disorder prevalence across socioeconomic status (SES) and investigates the relationship between sleep disorders and hypertension among southwest China's rural older adult population. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was conducted in rural Yunnan Province, China from 2017 to 2018, consisting of 4833 consenting participants aged ≥60 years. Each participant completed a structured interview and had their blood pressure measured. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Multivariate logistic regression was used to model variations in prevalence of sleep disorders and hypertension. RESULTS In the study population, the prevalence rates of sleep disorders and hypertension were 46.5% and 50.3%, respectively. Women had higher prevalence of both chronic illnesses (53.4% vs. 38.7%, 53.1% vs. 47.6%, P < 0.01). After adjusting for age, sex, and residential status, older adults of minority ethnicity had a higher prevalence of sleep disorders than the Han ethnic majority (P < 0.01). Attainment of higher levels of education and lower annual household income were also associated with a greater risk of sleep disorders (P < 0.01). Further, logistic regression analysis indicated that older adults with sleep disorders had a greater risk of being hypertensive (P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Sleep disorders are highly prevalent in rural southwest China. Future interventions to improve sleep quality would benefit from tailoring to address individual SES. Improving sleep quality profoundly reduces prevalence of hypertension.

Abstract
Reactive agility (RAG) and change of direction speed (CODS) are important determinants of success in football (soccer), but there is an evident lack of information on reliable and valid football-specific testing procedures which will be applicable in defining sport-specific RAG and CODS in youth players. This study evaluated reliability and construct validity of newly developed tests of football-specific RAG (FS_RAG) and CODS (FS_CODS), which involved the ball kicking football technique. Additionally, factors associated with FS_RAG and FS_CODS were evaluated. The participants were youth football players (n = 59; age: 13.40 ± 1.25 years) divided according to their age into U13 (11–12 years of age; n = 29), and U15 (13–14 years of age; n = 30) categories. Additionally, performance levels (starters [first-team] vs. non-starters [substitutes]) were observed in each age category. The dependent variables were newly developed FS_RAG and FS_CODS tests. The independent variables were sprinting capacities over 10 and 20 meters (S10M, S20M), countermovement jump (CMJ), the reactive strength index (RSI), and a generic CODS test of 20 yards (20Y). The newly developed FS_CODS and FS_RAG were observed as dependent variables. Results showed appropriate intra-testing and inter-testing reliability of the FS_RAG and FS_CODS, with somewhat better reliability of the FS_CODS (ICC=0.82 and 0.79, respectively). Additionally, better reliability was evidenced in U15 than in U13 (ICC: 0.82–0.85, and 0.78-0.80 for U15 and U13, respectively). Independent samples t-test indicated significant differences between U13 and U15 in S10 (t-test: 3.57, p < 0.001), S20M (t-test: 3.13, p < 0.001), 20Y (t-test: 4.89, p < 0.001), FS_RAG (t-test: 3.96, p < 0.001), and FS_CODS (t-test: 6.42, p < 0.001), with better performance in U15. Starters outperformed non-starters in most capacities among U13, but only in FS_RAG among U15 (t-test: 1.56, p < 0.05). Multiple regression calculations indicated nonsignificant association between independent and dependent variables in U13 (FS_CODS: 19%, FS_RAG: 21% of the explained variance, both p > 0.05), but independent variables explained significant proportion of both dependent variables in U15 (FS_CODS: 35%, FS_RAG: 33% explained variance, both p < 0.05). The study confirmed the applicability of newly developed tests in distinguishing studied age categories of players. Results indicate that superiority in all studied fitness capacities is translated into performance level in U13. Meanwhile, FS_RAG seems to be important determinant of quality in U15.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Even though the negative impacts of nocturia on sleep quality and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) have been documented in previous research, their interrelationship has been poorly studied. This study aimed to explore whether nocturia would affect sleep quality, which in turn affects HRQOL. METHODS Participants aged 40 and above were randomly recruited from a Hong Kong public primary care clinic. Participants were asked to report the average number of nocturia (waking up at night to void) pisodes per night over a 1-month period. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the 12-Item Short Form Health Survey version 2 (SF-12 v2) were administered. The mediation analysis was tested using multistage regression approach and bootstrap method. RESULTS Of the 500 subjects who completed the survey, 31.2% reported symptomatic nocturia (having ≥2 nocturia episodes per night), and 60.4% experienced poor sleep quality (a PSQI global score > 5). Respondents with symptomatic nocturia had a poorer HRQOL in the domains of physical functioning (PF), role physical (RP) and social functioning (SF), general health (GH), vitality (VT) and physical component summary (PCS) of the SF-12 v2 than those without. Compared with the respondents without poor sleep quality, those with poor sleep quality had poorer HRQOL across all domains and summaries of the SF-12 v2. Mediation analysis found that sleep quality fully mediated the association between nocturia and the PF, RP and SF domains of the SF-12 v2, respectively, and partially mediated the association between nocturia and the GH, VT and PCS domains of the SF-12 v2, respectively. CONCLUSIONS We found that sleep quality mediated the association between nocturia and HRQOL. To enhance the HRQOL of patients with nocturia, clinicians should not only focus on nocturia symptoms, but also on their sleep quality.

The Relationship between the Number of Daily Health-Related Behavioral Risk Factors and Sleep Health of the Elderly in China. Abstract
This study examined the cross-sectional association among a number of daily health-related behavioral risk factors and sleep among Chinese elderly. A sample of 4993 adults, aged 60 years and older, from the China’s Health-Related Quality of Life Survey for Older Adults 2018 was included in this study. Five daily health-related behaviors, which included smoking, drinking, unhealthy eating habits, insufficient leisure activities, and physical inactivity were measured. Sleep disturbances and sleep quality were used to represent the respondents’ sleep status. Multiple logistic regression models and multiple linear regression models were established. The odds ratios (ORs) of sleep disturbances for those with one to five health-related risk behaviors were 1.41 (95% CI = 1.11 to 1.78), 2.09 (95% CI = 1.66 to 2.63), 2.54 (95% CI = 1.99 to 3.25), 2.12 (95% CI = 1.60 to 2.80), and 2.49 (95% CI = 1.70 to 3.65), respectively. Individuals with one health-related risk behavior (B = 0.14, 95% CI = −0.23 to −0.06), two health-related risk behaviors (B = 0.21, 95% CI = −0.30 to −0.13), three health-related risk behaviors (B = 0.46, 95% CI = −0.55 to −0.37), four health-related risk behaviors (B = 0.50, 95% CI = −0.62 to −0.39), and five health-related risk behaviors (B = 0.83, 95% CI = −1.00 to −0.66) showed lower scores of self-perceived sleep quality. Having multiple health-risk behaviors was positively correlated with a higher risk of sleep disturbances among Chinese elderly. Moreover, elderly individuals with multiple health-related risk behaviors were significantly associated with poorer sleep quality.

Abstract
This study aims to explore if objectively and subjectively measured sleep parameters are associated with physical and mental health-related quality of life in a multiethnic working population in Singapore. We performed a cross-sectional analysis with data from 329 full-time employees enrolled in a workplace cohort study in Singapore. The Short-Form 36v2 (SF-36v2) survey was used to assess health-related quality of life, in terms of physical and mental health. Subjective and objective sleep parameters were measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and wrist actigraphy, respectively. Generalized linear modeling was performed to examine the association between sleep parameters and health-related quality of life. After adjusting for confounders, subjectively measured sleep disturbances were associated with a lower physical health-related quality of life, whereas higher, objectively measured sleep efficiency was associated with greater physical health-related quality of life. Subjectively measured daytime dysfunction was associated with impaired mental health-related quality of life. Using both objective and subjective measurements of sleep, the current study suggests that there is an association between sleep and health-related quality of life. Workplace health-promotion planners in Singapore should consider programmes that educate workers on better sleep hygiene practices in an effort to improve sleep and health-related quality of life.

Abstract
Background Daytime sleepiness can be assessed by the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), which is widely used in the field of sleep medicine as a subjective measure of a patient's sleepiness. Also, health utility assessed by the mean Short-Form Six-Dimension (SF-6D) score, one of several preference-based utility measures, is an important measure in health care. We aimed to examine age-related differences in daytime sleepiness and health utility and their relationship in patients 5 months after cardiac surgery. Methods; This cross-sectional study assessed 51 consecutive cardiac surgery patients who were divided into a middle-aged (<65 years, n = 29) and older-age group (≥65 years, n = 22). The mean ESS and SF-6D utility scores were measured at 5 months after cardiac surgery and compared. In addition, the relationship between ESS and SF-6D utility scores were assessed. Results; There were no significant differences between the middle-aged and older-aged groups in either the mean ESS (5.14 ± 2.96 vs. 4.05 ± 3.23, p = 0.22) or SF-6D utility (0.72 ± 0.14 vs. 0.71 ± 0.10, p = 0.76) scores. However, there was a negative correlation between both values in all of the patients after cardiac surgery (r = -0.41, p = 0.003). Conclusions; Although there were no age-related differences in the ESS and SF-6D utility values between the two groups, there was a negative correlation between these values in all patients at 5 months after cardiac surgery. This suggested that sleepiness is associated with decreased utility scores in patients at 5 months after cardiac surgery.
