Emission Characteristics of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Nitro-Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons from Open Burning of Rice Straw in the North of Vietnam

Characterisation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons associated with indoor PM0.1 and PM2.5 in Hanoi and implications for health risks

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) associated with indoor PM pose a high risk to human health because of their toxicity. A total of 160 daily samples of indoor PM2.5 and PM0.1 were collected in Hanoi and analysed for 15 PAHs. In general, the concentrations of carcinogenic PAHs (car-PAHs) accounted for 21% ± 2%, 19.1% ± 2%, and 26% ± 3% of the concentrations of 15 PAHs in PM2.5, PM0.1-2.5, and PM0.1, respectively. Higher percentages of car-PAHs were found in smaller fractions (PM0.1), which can be easily deposited deep in the pulmonary regions of the human respiratory tract. The concentrations of 15 PAHs were higher in winter than in summer. The most abundant PAH species were naphthalene and phenanthrene, accounting for 11%-21% and 19%-23%, respectively. The PAH content in PM0.1 was almost twice as high as those in PM2.5 and PM0.1-2.5. Principal component analysis found that vehicle emissions and the combustion of biomass and coal were the main outdoor sources of PAHs, whereas indoor sources included cooking activities, the combustion of incense, scented candles, and domestic uses in houses. According to the results, 60%-90% of the PM0.1-bound BaP(eq) was deposited in the alveoli region, whereas 63%-75% of the PM2.5-bound BaP(eq) was deposited in head airways (HA), implying that most of the particles deposited in the HA region were PM0.1-2.5. The contributions of dibenz[a,h]anthracene and benzo[a]pyrene were dominant and contributed from 36% to 51% and 31%-50%, respectively, to the carcinogenic potential, whereas benzo[a]pyrene contributed from 30% to 49% to the mutagenic potential for both size fractions. The incremental lifetime cancer risk, simulated by Monte Carlo simulation, was within the limits set by the US EPA, indicating an acceptable risk for the occupants. These results provide an additional scientific basis for protecting human health from exposure to indoor PAHs.

Investigating industrial PAH air pollution in relation to population exposure in major countries: A scoring approach

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are common air pollutants worldwide, associated with industrial processes. In the general population, both modeling and field studies revealed a positive correlation between air PAH concentrations and urinary PAH metabolite levels. Many countries lack population urinary data that correspond to local PAH air concentrations. Thus, we proposed a scoring-based approximate approach to investigating that correlation in selected countries, hypothesizing that PAH air concentrations in selected regions could represent the national air quality influenced by industrial emission and further correlate to PAH internal exposure in the general population. This research compiled 85 peer-reviewed journal articles and 9 official monitoring datasets/reports covering 34 countries, 16 of which with both atmospheric PAH data and human biomonitoring data. For the air pollution score (AirS), Egypt had the highest AirS at 0.94 and Pakistan was at the bottom of the score ranking at -1.95, as well as the median in the UK (AirS: 0.50). For the population exposure score (ExpS), China gained the top ExpS at 0.44 and Spain was with the lowest ExpS of -1.52, with the median value in Italy (ExpS: 0.43). Through the correlation analysis, atmospheric PAHs and their corresponding urinary metabolites provided a positive relationship to a diverse extent, indicating that the related urinary metabolites could reflect the population's exposure to specific atmospheric PAHs. The findings also revealed that in the 16 selected countries, AirS indexes were positively correlated with ExpS indexes, implying that higher PAH levels in the air may lead to elevated metabolite urinary levels in general populations. Furthermore, lowering PAH air concentrations could reduce population internal PAH exposure, implying that strict PAH air regulation or emission would reduce health risks for general populations. Notably, this study was an ideal theoretical research based on proposed assumptions to some extent. Further research should focus on understanding exposure pathways, protecting vulnerable populations, and improving the PAH database to optimize PAH pollution control.

A review on recent eco-friendly strategies to utilize rice straw in construction industry: pathways from bane to boon

With the growing demand, a large amount of paddy has been harvested by growers leaving behind the stubble (left over rice straw), which is being a big burden on the farmers for its management. For the easy access, the burning of stubble has been opted which in turn results in the deterioration of the environment. To mitigate this problem, rice straw utilization strategies should be opted. Therefore, in this review article, the strategies of utilizing rice straw in fiber or ash form to manufacture construction materials have been summarized. The manuscript also considers the method of productions, variability in raw materials, and various mechanical/physical properties of construction materials targeted. Further, the financial aspects related to utilization of rice straw and rice straw ash are also encoded at last. This review will be helpful to expedite the research in this field and may also be used for startups related to various product development using straw in the local areas, which may depreciate the burning of straw in the field and its environmental effects.

Endocrine-disrupting metabolic activation of 2-nitrofluorene catalyzed by human cytochrome P450 1A1: A QM/MM approach

Nitropolycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs) present one of the most important airborne pollutants. Recent studies have shown that one of the most abundant NPAHs, 2-Nitrofluorene (NF), was supposed to be converted to endocrine-disrupting metabolites by cytochrome P450 1A1 (CYP1A1) in human cells. However, the mechanism is still largely unexplored. Here the metabolic activation and transformation mechanism of NF catalyzed by CYP1A1 were systematically studied with the aid of Molecular Dynamics, Density Functional Theory and Quantum Mechanics/Molecular Mechanics techniques. We evidence that CYP1A1 can activate NF through two elementary processes: (i) electrophilic addition (12.4 kcal·mol-1) or hydrogen abstraction (38.2 kcal·mol-1) and (ii) epoxidation (5.9 and 8.7 kcal·mol-1) or NIH shift (12.5 and 14.9 kcal·mol-1) or proton shuttle (12.1 kcal·mol-1). Electrophilic addition was found to be the rate-determining step while epoxidation rather than NIH shift or proton shuttle is the more feasible pathway after electrophilic addition. Metabolites 6,7-epoxide-2-nitrofluorene and 7,8-epoxide-2-nitrofluorene were identified as the major epoxidation products. Epoxides are unstable and easy to react with hydrated hydrogen ions and hydroxyls to produce endocrine disrupter 7-hydroxy-2-nitrofluorene. Toxic analysis shows that some of the metabolites are more toxic to model aquatic organisms (e.g. Green algea) than NF. Binding affinity analysis to human sex hormone binding globulin reveals that NF metabolites all have endocrine-disrupting potential. This study provides a comprehensive understanding on the biotransformation process of NF and may aid future studies on various NPAHs activation catalyzed by human P450 enzyme.

Characteristics and Influencing Factors of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Emitted from Open Burning and Stove Burning of Biomass: A Brief Review

To mitigate global warming and achieve carbon neutrality, biomass has become a widely used carbon-neutral energy source due to its low cost and easy availability. However, the incomplete combustion of biomass can produce polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are harmful to human health. Moreover, increasing numbers of wildfires in many regions caused by global warming have greatly increased the emissions of PAHs from biomass burning. To effectively mitigate PAH pollution and health risks associated with biomass usage, the concentrations, compositions and influencing factors of PAH emissions from biomass burning are summarized in this review. High PAH emissions from open burning and stove burning are found, and two- to four-ring PAHs account for a higher proportion than five- and six-ring PAHs. Based on the mechanism of biomass burning, biomass with higher volatile matter, cellulose, lignin, potassium salts and moisture produces more PAHs. Moreover, burning biomass in stoves at a high temperature or with an insufficient oxygen supply can increase PAH emissions. Therefore, the formation and emission of PAHs can be reduced by pelletizing, briquetting or carbonizing biomass to increase its density and burning efficiency. This review contributes to a comprehensive understanding of PAH pollution from biomass burning, providing prospective insight for preventing air pollution and health hazards associated with carbon neutrality.

Three years of atmospheric concentrations of nitrated and oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and oxygen heterocycles at a central European background site

Nitrated and oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs, OPAHs) are abundant in the atmosphere and contribute significantly to the health risk associated with inhalation of polluted air. Despite the health hazard they pose, NPAHs and OPAHs were rarely included in monitoring. The aim of this study is to provide the first multi-year temporal trends of the concentrations, composition pattern and fate of NPAHs and OPAHs in air from a site representative of background air quality conditions in central Europe. Samples were collected every second week at a rural background site in the Czech Republic during 2015-2017. Concentrations ranged from 1.3 to 160 pg m^-3 for Σ₁₇NPAHs, from 32 to 2600 pg m^-3 for Σ₁₀OPAHs and from 5.1 to 4300 pg m^-3 for Σ₂O-heterocycles. The average particulate mass fraction (θ) ranged from 0.01 ± 0.02 (2-nitronaphthalene) to 0.83 ± 0.22 (1-nitropyrene) for individual NPAHs and from <0.01 ± 0.01 (dibenzofuran) to 0.96 ± 0.08 (6H-benzo (c,d)pyren-6-one) for individual OPAHs and O-heterocycles. The multiyear variations showed downward trends for a number of targeted compounds. This suggests that on-going emission reductions of PAHs are effective also for co-emitted NPAHs and OPAHs.

Exposure to Atmospheric Particulate Matter-Bound Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Their Health Effects: A Review

Particulate matter (PM) is a major factor contributing to air quality deterioration that enters the atmosphere as a consequence of various natural and anthropogenic activities. In PM, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) represent a class of organic chemicals with at least two aromatic rings that are mainly directly emitted via the incomplete combustion of various organic materials. Numerous toxicological and epidemiological studies have proven adverse links between exposure to particulate matter-bound (PM-bound) PAHs and human health due to their carcinogenicity and mutagenicity. Among human exposure routes, inhalation is the main pathway regarding PM-bound PAHs in the atmosphere. Moreover, the concentrations of PM-bound PAHs differ among people, microenvironments and areas. Hence, understanding the behaviour of PM-bound PAHs in the atmosphere is crucial. However, because current techniques hardly monitor PAHs in real-time, timely feedback on PAHs including the characteristics of their concentration and composition, is not obtained via real-time analysis methods. Therefore, in this review, we summarize personal exposure, and indoor and outdoor PM-bound PAH concentrations for different participants, spaces, and cities worldwide in recent years. The main aims are to clarify the characteristics of PM-bound PAHs under different exposure conditions, in addition to the health effects and assessment methods of PAHs.

Emission factors of ultrafine particulate matter (PM<0.1 μm) and particle-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from biomass combustion for source apportionment

Data for source apportionment estimation was obtained from combustion of 11 types of biomass (rubber wood, palm kernel, palm fiber, sugarcane bagasse, sugarcane leaves, maize residue, rice stubble, rice straw, Xylocarpus moluccensis, Avicennia alba Blume and Rhizophora mucronata) and bituminous coal. Combustion was carried out in a tube furnace and emitted particulate matter (PM) was collected using a nanosampler that segregated particle sizes down to 0.1 μm. Emission factors of PM < 0.1 μm were in the range of 0.11-0.28 g kg^-1 (∼1-8% of total PM), except in the case of Rhizophora mucronata, which had an emission factor of 0.071 ± 0.004 g kg^-1 (∼18% of total PM). The dominant polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) found on PM < 0.1 μm were chrysene from combustion of rubber wood, palm kernel, palm fiber, maize residue, Xylocarpus moluccensis, Avicennia alba Blume, Rhizophora mucronata and bituminous coal; benzo[b]fluoranthene from combustion of rice straw, sugarcane bagasse and sugarcane leaves; and benzo[k]fluoranthene from rice stubble combustion. The emission factors of PAHs bound to PM < 0.1 μm from biomass combustion ranged from 0.005 to 0.044 mg kg^-1 and the emission factor from bituminous coal combustion was 0.1411 ± 0.0004 mg kg^-1. The carcinogenic potency equivalent or benzo[a]pyrene equivalent was highest from bituminous coal combustion (0.1252 mg kg^-1) and between 0.0019 and 0.0192 mg kg^-1 from biomass combustion. However, emission factors of both PM and particle-bound PAHs from biomass combustion were affected by moisture content of biomass and moisture contents of biomass used in this study were quite low, ranging from 0.165 to 0.863%.

Atmospheric particulate matters in an Indian urban area: Health implications from potentially hazardous elements, cytotoxicity, and genotoxicity studies

The nature of the atmospheric particulate matters (PMs) varies depending on their sizes and their origin from different activities in the background environment. These PMs are associated with potentially hazardous elements (PHEs) such as organic compounds (e.g. Polyaromatic Hydrocarbons) that can be harmful to health. The main objective of this work is the identification and investigation of the toxicological aspects of PHEs in PMs during pre-monsoon and post-monsoon season in an urban area of Northeast region (NER) of India. In the course of the study, the 24 -hs average concentrations of PMs were detected to be more than two-times higher than the Indian standard limit (NAAQ, category) which indicates poor air quality in both the seasons around the sampling sites. This study demonstrates that the concentrations of PM-bound PAHs are mutagenic and that the Excess Cancer Risks exceed the USEPA standard limits. PMs cause cytotoxicity and can also induce genotoxicity to human health analyzed by cell culture and gel electrophoresis. This study helps to promote research to evaluate the PMs bound PHEs toxicity in diverse human cell lines and also their relationship with climatic factors as well as quantitative source apportionment for mitigation purposes.

Seasonal Fluctuation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Aerosol Genotoxicity in Long-Range Transported Air Mass Observed at the Western End of Japan

In order to clarify the level transboundary air pollution caused by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and genotoxic substances, aerosols were collected from forest and suburban sites in Nagasaki, west Japan, for 6 years. The PAH concentration was measured, and the genotoxicity of the substances were evaluated using the umu test. The results showed no notable trends in the concentration or toxicity of either sites throughout the study period. The suburban and forest sites shared similar seasonal fluctuation patterns and quantitative values, suggesting that the western end of Japan might be affected by long-range transported pollutants, especially in winter. PAH concentration and genotoxicity showed the same seasonal patterns of increased levels in winter and lower levels in summer. This suggests that PAHs and genotoxic substances were correlated and share common sources. Back trajectory and source analyses were conducted using the diagnostic ratios of PAHs. It was predicted that air pollution by PAHs at the forest site arise predominantly as a result of biomass or coal combustion in continental regions, such as northern parts of China and the Korean Peninsula. This is particularly expected in winter. Therefore, genotoxic substances would also be strongly influenced by transboundary pollution from the continental region. In addition, it was estimated that the contribution of transboundary PAH pollution could reach 70% at the suburban site in winter.
