A Bibliometric Analysis of Neuroscience Tools Use in Construction Health and Safety Management

Despite longstanding traditional construction health and safety management (CHSM) methods, the construction industry continues to face persistent challenges in this field. Neuroscience tools offer potential advantages in addressing these safety and health issues by providing objective data to indicate subjects' cognition and behavior. The application of neuroscience tools in the CHSM has received much attention in the construction research community, but comprehensive statistics on the application of neuroscience tools to CHSM is lacking to provide insights for the later scholars. Therefore, this study applied bibliometric analysis to examine the current state of neuroscience tools use in CHSM. The development phases; the most productive journals, regions, and institutions; influential scholars and articles; author collaboration; reference co-citation; and application domains of the tools were identified. It revealed four application domains: monitoring the safety status of construction workers, enhancing the construction hazard recognition ability, reducing work-related musculoskeletal disorders of construction workers, and integrating neuroscience tools with artificial intelligence techniques in enhancing occupational safety and health, where magnetoencephalography (EMG), electroencephalography (EEG), eye-tracking, and electrodermal activity (EDA) are four predominant neuroscience tools. It also shows a growing interest in integrating the neuroscience tools with artificial intelligence techniques to address the safety and health issues. In addition, future studies are suggested to facilitate the applications of these tools in construction workplaces by narrowing the gaps between experimental settings and real situations, enhancing the quality of data collected by neuroscience tools and performance of data processing algorithms, and overcoming user resistance in tools adoption.

Exploring construction workers' brain connectivity during hazard recognition: a cognitive psychology perspective

Monitoring brain activity is a novel development for hazard recognition in the construction industry. However, very few empirical studies have investigated the causal connections within the brain. This study aimed to explore the brain connectivity of construction workers during hazard recognition. Electroencephalogram data were collected from construction workers to perform image-based hazard recognition tasks. The Granger causality-based adaptive directed transfer function was used to simulate directed and time-variant information flow across the observed brain activity from the perspective of cognitive psychology. The results suggested a top-down modulation of behavioral goals originating from the dorsal attention network during hazard relocation. The sensory cortex predominantly serves as the information outlet center and interacts extensively with the frontal and visual cortices, reflecting a top-down attention reorientation mechanism for processing threatening stimuli. Our findings of brain effective connectivity supplement new evidence underpinning parallel distributed processing theory for workplace hazard recognition.

EEG-Based Empathic Safe Cobot

An empathic collaborative robot (cobot) was realized through the transmission of fear from a human agent to a robot agent. Such empathy was induced through an electroencephalographic (EEG) sensor worn by the human agent, thus realizing an empathic safe brain-computer interface (BCI). The empathic safe cobot reacts to the fear and in turn transmits it to the human agent, forming a social circle of empathy and safety. A first randomized, controlled experiment involved two groups of 50 healthy subjects (100 total subjects) to measure the EEG signal in the presence or absence of a frightening event. The second randomized, controlled experiment on two groups of 50 different healthy subjects (100 total subjects) exposed the subjects to comfortable and uncomfortable movements of a collaborative robot (cobot) while the subjects’ EEG signal was acquired. The result was that a spike in the subject’s EEG signal was observed in the presence of uncomfortable movement. The questionnaires were distributed to the subjects, and confirmed the results of the EEG signal measurement. In a controlled laboratory setting, all experiments were found to be statistically significant. In the first experiment, the peak EEG signal measured just after the activating event was greater than the resting EEG signal (p < 10−3). In the second experiment, the peak EEG signal measured just after the uncomfortable movement of the cobot was greater than the EEG signal measured under conditions of comfortable movement of the cobot (p < 10−3). In conclusion, within the isolated and constrained experimental environment, the results were satisfactory.

Application of Neuroscience Tools in Building Construction – An Interdisciplinary Analysis

Interdisciplinary integration is a new driving force in development of science and technology. Neuroscience, a powerful tool for studying human physiology and psychology that is greatly interconnected with the field of building construction, has attracted numerous research attention. In this paper, we systematically review the interdisciplinary applications of neuroscience tools using bibliometric methods. We report that the built environment, construction safety, architectural design, and occupational health are the main areas of research attention, while thermal comfort, air quality, hazard recognition, safety training, aesthetic design, and biophilic design, among others, comprise the most frequently studied topics with regards to application of neuroscience tools. Currently, eye tracking and the electroencephalogram are the most commonly used tools in the field of building construction, while functional near-infrared spectroscopy, functional magnetic resonance imaging and trigeminal nerve stimulation are still at their initial stage of application.

A Systematic Review of Eye-Tracking Studies of Construction Safety

Safety is the most important concern in the construction industry, and construction workers' attention allocation is closely associated with their hazard recognition and safety behaviors. The recent emergence of eye-tracking techniques allows researchers in construction safety to further investigate construction workers' visual attention allocation during hazard recognition. The existing eye-tracking studies in construction safety need to be comprehensively understood, to provide practical suggestions for future research and on-site safety management. This study aims to summarize previous studies on the application of eye-tracking techniques to the construction safety context through a systematic literature review. The literature search and study selection process included 22 eligible studies. Content analysis was then carried out from participant selection, device selection, task design, area of interest determination, feature extraction, data analysis, and main findings. Major limitations of the existing studies are identified, and recommendations for future research in theoretical development, experiment improvement, and data analysis method advancement are proposed to address these limitations. Even though the application of eye-tracking techniques in construction safety research is still in its early stage, it is worth future continuous attention because relevant discoveries would be of great significance to hazard control and safety management in the construction industry.

Re-Thinking the Mediating Role of Emotional Valence and Arousal between Personal Factors and Occupational Safety Attention Levels

Emotions strongly affect occupational safety attention and public health; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. We investigated the mediation mechanisms of emotional valence and arousal on safety attention using real time data. In all, 70 Chinese workers performed 8400 trials of hazard recognition tasks according to a pre-designed experiment. Their emotional and safety attention levels were recorded based on their facial expressions and eye movements, and the mediating mechanics of emotional valence and arousal were examined through a hierarchical regression. The study results show that: (1) emotional valence and arousal significantly and positively affect safety attention; (2) risk tolerance and personality significantly affect emotional valence and arousal but do not significantly affect safety attention; and (3) emotional valence and arousal significantly mediate safety attention levels and personal factors. From a theoretical viewpoint, this study corroborates the mediating role of emotion on occupational safety attention and personal factors by highlighting valence and arousal. Practically, managers can develop more specific training methods tailored to the results that pertain to workers' higher emotional resilience for better occupational safety performance and health.
