Vegetation Change and Its Relationship with Climate Factors and Elevation on the Tibetan Plateau

Composition and distribution of bacterial communities and potential radiation-resistant bacteria at different elevations in the eastern Pamirs

Altitude and ultraviolet (UV) radiation may affect the community composition and distribution of microorganisms in soil ecosystems. In this study, 49 soil samples from 10 locations were collected from different elevations on the eastern Pamir Plateau and analyzed for soil microbial community structure and function using high-throughput sequencing. The results showed that soil samples from different elevations of the eastern Pamir Plateau contained 6834 OTUs in 26 phyla and 399 genera. The dominant phyla common to different elevations were Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, Acidobacteriota, and Gemmatimonadota. The dominant genera were Rubrobacter, Sphingomonas, Nocardioides, and Solirubrobacter. Species richness increased slightly with elevation, and there were significant differences in community composition between the elevations. Elevation and UV exposure are important factors that drive changes in bacterial communities. The results of the KEGG pathway showed that drug resistance, antineoplastic, aging, replication, and repair were enhanced and then slightly decreased with increasing elevation. Bacterial communities at different elevations were rich in radiation-resistant microorganisms, and the main genera were Rubrobacter, Sphingomonas, Nocardioides, Pontibacter, and Streptomyces. The findings have shown the composition and distribution of bacterial communities at different elevations on the Eastern Pamir Plateau. Potentially radiation tolerant microbial species were also examined. The results are of considerable importance for the succession of bacterial microorganisms in the plateau region, the study of radiation tolerant bacterial germplasm resources, and the application of biofunctionality.

An evaluative technique for drought impact on variation in agricultural LULC using remote sensing and machine learning

Drought events threaten freshwater reservoirs and agricultural productivity, particularly in semi-arid regions characterized by erratic rainfall. This study evaluates a novel technique for assessing the impact of drought on LULC variations in the context of climate change from 2018 to 2022. Various data sources were harnessed, encompassing Sentinel-2 satellite imagery for LULC classification, climate data from the CHIRPS and AgERA5 databases, geomorphological data from JAXA's ALOS satellite, and a drought indicator (Vegetation Health Index (VHI)) derived from MODIS data. Two classifier models, namely gradient tree boost (GTB) and random forest (RF), were trained and assessed for LULC classification, with performance evaluated by overall accuracy (OA) and kappa coefficient (K). Notably, the GTB model exhibited superior performance, with OA > 90% and a K > 0.9. Over the period from 2018 to 2022, Fez experienced LULC changes of 19.92% expansion in built-up areas, a 34.86% increase in bare land, a 17.86% reduction in water bodies, and a 37.30% decrease in agricultural land. Positive correlations of 0.81 and 0.89 were observed between changes in agricultural LULC, rainfall, and VHI. Furthermore, mild drought conditions were identified in the years 2020 and 2022. This study emphasizes the importance of AI and remote sensing techniques in assessing drought and environmental changes, with potential applications for improving existing drought monitoring systems.

Altitude explains insignificant autumn phenological changes across regions with large topography relief in the Tibetan Plateau

The start of the growing season (SGS) and the end of the growing season (EGS) are widely employed in global change studies to represent the spring and autumn phenology, respectively. Despite the Tibetan Plateau (TP) experiencing significant warming in recent decades, EGS has exhibited only slight changes. Previous studies have concentrated on exploring the environmental regulation of phenology, ignoring the distinctive influences of elevation. Therefore, a more in-depth investigation into the underlying mechanism is warranted. In this study, we investigate the variability of EGS among alpine vegetation regions at different elevations and conduct an analysis based on satellite data. Phenology data of alpine vegetation are extracted from SPOT NDVI dataset spanning from 1999 to 2018, using a piecewise-logistic-maximum-ratio method. We analyze the factors influencing EGS trends at different elevations. The results show that the overall insignificant variation in EGS is mainly attributed to altitude. With the altitude increasing, the annual mean EGS experiences a delay of 0.28 days/100 m below 3500 m, while it advances by 0.2 days/100 m above 3500 m. The opposing shift in elevation below and above 3500 m leads to this counteraction. Elevation emerges as the predominant factor influencing EGS trends, explaining the highest variations (38 %), followed by SGS (22 %) and precipitation (22 %). The elevation effect is most pronounced in areas with substantial topography fluctuations. Moreover, the elevation lapse rate of EGS (ELR_EGS) exhibits an opposite trend with growing season (GS) temperature and a similar trend with GS precipitation between the regions below and above 3500 m, ultimately linking to this counteraction. This study underscores elevation is a critical regulator of vegetation EGS responses to climatic changes over the TP, revealing significant spatial heterogeneities in these responses.

Ephedrine and pseudoephedrine in Ephedra saxatilis on the vertical altitude gradient changed in southern Tibet Plateau, China

Ephedra is one of the world's most important plants, used in medicine, plants and ecology. Most Ephedra grows in plain areas and is stable. But the plateau environment is special, with the change of altitude, the variety difference of plateau Ephedra saxatilis is very obvious. E. saxatilis metabolism on the Tibetan Plateau is not only affected by altitude, but also environmental conditions such as climate conditions and different soil components. However, the change mechanism of E. saxatilis alkaloids in special ecological environment is still unclear. Therefore, we analyzed the metabolic and altitude of E. saxatilis species in the Tibetan Plateau. Through the functional analysis of Kyoto Metabolism and Metabolomic Encyclopedia (KEGG), we can determine that the number of E. saxatilis metabolites decreases with the increase of altitude, and there are differences in metabolism among the three mountains. This was confirmed by univariate analysis of the top five metabolic pathways. Based on the analysis of soil and metabolomics, it was found that soil water content was also a factor affecting E. saxatilis metabolism. According to the difference of vertical height gradient, ephedrine and pseudephedrine showed the same change in vertical altitude under different mountains. Ephedrine increased as the altitude gradient increased, and pseudoephedrine decreased as the altitude gradient decreased. Our results provide valuable information for further study of metabolic mechanism and efficacy stability. It provides useful reference for the research of E. saxatilis planting in special area.

Distribution patterns and community assembly processes of eukaryotic microorganisms along an altitudinal gradient in the middle reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River

Eukaryotic microorganisms play an important role in the biogeochemical cycles of rivers. Dynamic hydrological processes in rivers are thought to influence the assembly processes of eukaryotic microbes, as well as affecting local geomorphology. These processes have not been extensively studied for eukaryotic river microbes in extreme environments on the Tibetan Plateau. This study used 18S rDNA gene amplification sequencing, a neutral community model, and a null model to analyze the spatial and temporal dynamics and assembly processes of eukaryotic microbial communities in the middle reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River. We conducted analyses across wet and dry seasons, as well as varying altitudinal gradients. Our results showed that the diversity, structure, and taxonomic composition of eukaryotic microbial communities varied more with altitude than season, and the diversity of the communities first increased, then decreased, with increasing elevation. Distance-decay analysis showed that the correlation between eukaryotic microbial communities and environmental distance was stronger than the correlation between the microbial communities and geographical distance. Deterministic processes (homogeneous selection) dominated the construction of eukaryotic microbial communities, and water temperature, pH, and total phosphorus were the primary environmental factors that influenced the construction of eukaryotic microbial communities. These results expand our understanding of the characteristics of eukaryotic microbial communities in rivers on the Tibetan Plateau and provide clues to understanding the mechanisms that maintain eukaryotic microbial diversity in extreme environments.

Spatiotemporal trends of NDVI and its response to climate variability in the Abbay River Basin, Ethiopia

Woody vegetation plays a vital role in regulating the water budget and energy exchange in the Earth's system. This study aimed at analyzing the spatiotemporal variability of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and its response to Potential Evapotranspiration (PET), rainfall (RF), soil moisture (SM), and temperature (TEM) in the study area. The trends, correlations, and relationships between NDVI and climate variables were executed using Mann-Kendall monotonic trend (MKMT), partial correlation coefficients (PCC), and multiple linear regression (MLR) methods, respectively. Over the last 26 years, the interannual NDVI increased by 0.0065 yr^-1 (R² = 0.159, p = 0.157). The spatiotemporal MKMT and Theil-Sen slope analysis showed that interannual NDVI increased significantly in 78% of the basin's total area. Of the 78% of the basin, 31%, and 47%, of the total area showed extremely significant increasing (Z_mk = 4.706, p ≤ 0.01), and significant increasing trends (Z_mk = 2.378, p ≤ 0.05) respectively. The interannual variation of NDVI was well explained (R² = 0.88, Adjusted R² = 0.84) by the climate variables in the eastern, southeastern, and central sub-basins where agriculture, grass, sparse vegetation and barelands are the predominant land use land cover (LULC) classes. The main climatic factors that control vegetation growth and greenness during the rainy season were found to be PET, SM, and RF with 0.91, 0.99, and 0.86 PCC with NDVI respectively. The current study broadens the scientific community's understanding of the relationship between climate variables and vegetation growth in highland ecosystems. Understanding the seasonal and long-term relationship between climate and NDVI contributes to the scientific knowledge of highland ecosystems, which are extremely vulnerable to climate change.

Vegetation Dynamics and Food Security against the Background of Ecological Restoration in Hubei Province, China

A series of ecological restoration projects have been proposed to solve ecological problems resulting from human activities. The project of returning farmlands to forests, initiated in 1999, was the most widely implemented ecological restoration project in China. Large amounts of cropland with steep slopes have been converted to forests or grasslands to promote vegetation restoration, reduce soil erosion, and control nonpoint source pollution. Therefore, identifying the dynamics of vegetation and food security is crucial for further decision making. Based on the mean normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and grain yield data, this study explored the vegetation dynamics and food security of Hubei Province against the background of ecological restoration. The results show that, on a whole, the NDVI significantly increased from 2000 to 2018. The spatial agglomeration of the NDVI decreased between 2000 and 2008 and then increased from 2009 onwards. High-high NDVI agglomerations were more concentrated in mountainous areas. Food security was not threatened, and the grain yield in Hubei Province and most of the cities exhibited significant upward trends, as a whole. The change trend of the grain yield was not stable during the period from 2000 to 2018. The grain yield for Hubei Province and almost all of the cities decreased during the first 5 to 11 years, probably due to the sharp decrease in the sloping cropland areas against the background of ecological restoration. Grain yield was more sensitive and had a longer downward trend in regions with steeper slopes. Increasing trends in grain yield were detected during the last 6 to 10 years for most of the cities, and this can mainly be attributed to the newly added croplands that were created from land with other kinds of land uses, the increase in grain productivity, and strict cropland protection policies. The project of returning farmlands to forests is suggested as a long-term policy from the perspective of ecological restoration, and effective measures should also be continuously taken to maintain grain production and food security.

Minimal climate change impacts on the geographic distribution of Nepeta glomerulosa, medicinal species endemic to southwestern and central Asia

Medicinal plants are valuable species, but their geographic distributions may be limited or exposed to extinction by climate change. Therefore, research on medicinal plants in the face of climate change is fundamental for developing conservation strategies. Distributional patterns for a semi-endemic medicinal plant species, Nepeta glomerulosa, distributed in southwestern and central Asia was determined based on a maximum-entropy algorithm. We evaluated potential geographic shifts in suitability patterns for this species under two Shared Socioeconomic Pathways scenarios (SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5) of climate change for 2060. Our models based on climatic features indicate that the species occupies montane areas under current conditions; transfer of the model to future climate scenarios indicated that suitable areas for the species will increase in general, and the species will likely track its favored set of climate conditions. But the types and degrees of these changes differ among areas. Our findings can be used to inform conservation management programs for medicinal, endemic, and endangered species that probably respond similarly to climate change in southwestern and central Asia.

Analysing the spatio-temporal patterns of vegetation dynamics and their responses to climatic parameters in Meghalaya from 2001 to 2020

Quantification of the spatio-temporal trends in vegetation dynamics and its drivers is crucial to ensure sustainable management of ecosystems. The north-eastern state of Meghalaya possessing an idiosyncratic climatic regime has been undergoing tremendous pressure in the past decades considering the recent climate change scenario. A robust trend analysis has been performed using the MODIS NDVI (MOD13Q1) data (2001-2020) along with multi-source gridded climate data (precipitation and temperature) to detect changes in the vegetation dynamics and corresponding climatic variables by employing the Theil-Sen Median trend test and Mann-Kendall test (τ). The spatial variability of trends was gauged with respect to 7 major forest types, administrative boundaries and different elevational gradients found in the area. Results revealed a large positive inter-annual trend (85.48%) with a minimal negative trend (14.52%) in the annual mean NDVI. Mean Annual Precipitation presents a negative trend in 66.97% of the area mainly concentrated in the eastern portion of the state while the western portion displays a positive trend in about 33.03% of the area. Temperature exhibits a 98% positive trend in Meghalaya. Pettitt Change Point Detection revealed three major breakpoints viz., 2010, 2012 and 2014 in the NDVI values from 2001 to 2020 over the forested region of Meghalaya. A consistent future vegetation trend (87.78%) in Meghalaya was identified through Hurst Exponent. A positive correlation between vegetation and temperature was observed in about 82.81% of the area. The western portion of the state was seen to reflect a clear correlation between NDVI and rainfall as compared to the eastern portion where NDVI is correlated more with temperature than rainfall. A gradual deviation of rainfall towards the west was identified which might be feedback of the increasing significant greening observed in the state in the recent decades. This study, therefore, serves as a decadal archive of forest dynamics and also provides an insight into the long-term impact of climate change on vegetation which would further help in investigating and projecting the future ecosystem dynamics in Meghalaya.

Characteristics of Greening along Altitudinal Gradients on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau Based on Time-Series Landsat Images

The Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP) is ecologically fragile and is especially sensitive to climate change. Previous studies have shown that the vegetation on the QTP is undergoing overall greening with variations along altitudinal gradients. However, the mechanisms that cause the differences in the spatiotemporal patterns of vegetation greening among different types of terrain and vegetation have not received sufficient attention. Therefore, in this study, we used a Landsat NDVI time-series for the period 1992–2020 and climate data to observe the effects of terrain and vegetation types on the spatiotemporal patterns in vegetation greening on the QTP and to analyze the factors driving this greening using the geographical detector and the velocity of the vertical movement of vegetation greenness isolines. The results showed the following: (1) The vertical movement of the vegetation greenness isolines was affected by the temperature and precipitation at all elevations. The precipitation had a more substantial effect than the temperature below 3000 m. In contrast, above 3000 m, the temperature had a greater effect than the precipitation. (2) The velocity of the vertical movement of the vegetation greenness isolines of woody plants was higher than that of herbaceous plants. (3) The influence of slope on the vertical movement of vegetation greenness isolines was more significant than that of the aspect. The results of this study provided details of the spatiotemporal differences in vegetation greening between different types of terrain and vegetation at a 30-m scale as well as of the underlying factors driving this greening. These results will help to support ecological protection policies on the QTP.

Spatial and Temporal Analyses of Vegetation Changes at Multiple Time Scales in the Qilian Mountains

The Qilian Mountains (QLMs), an important ecological protective barrier and major water resource connotation area in the Hexi Corridor region, have an important impact on ecological security in western China due to their ecological changes. However, most existing studies have investigated vegetation changes and their main driving forces in the QLMs on the basis of a single scale. Thus, the interactions among multiple environmental factors in the QLMs are still unclear. This study was based on normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI) data from 2000 to 2019. We systematically analysed the spatial and temporal characteristics of the QLMs at multiple time scales using trend analysis, ensemble empirical mode decomposition, Geodetector, and correlation analysis methods. At different time scales under single-factor and multi-factor interactions, we examined the mechanisms of the vegetation changes and their drivers. Our results showed that the vegetation in the QLMs showed a trend of overall improvement in 2000–2019, at a rate of 0.88 × 10−3, mainly in the central western regions. The NDVI in the QLMs showed a short change cycle of 3 and 5 years and a long-term trend. Sunshine time and wind speed were the main drivers of the vegetation variation in the QLMs, followed by temperature. Precipitation affected the vegetation spatial variation within a certain altitude range. However, temperature and precipitation had stronger explanatory powers for the vegetation variation in the western QLMs than in the eastern part. Their interaction was the dominant factor in the regional differences in vegetation. The responses of the NDVI to temperature and precipitation were stronger in the long time series. The main drivers of vegetation variation were land surface temperature and precipitation in the east and temperature and evapotranspiration in the west. Precipitation was the main driver of vegetation growth in the northern and southwestern QLMs on both the short- and long-term scales. Vegetation changes were more significantly influenced by short-term temperature changes in the east but by a combination of temperature and precipitation in most parts of the QLMs on a 5-year time scale.

Contrasting Effects of Temperature and Precipitation on Vegetation Greenness along Elevation Gradients of the Tibetan Plateau

The Tibetan Plateau (TP) is one of the most sensitive regions to global climate warming, not only at the inter-annual time scale but also at the altitudinal scale. We aim to investigate the contrasting effects of temperature and precipitation on vegetation greenness at different altitudes across the TP. In this study, interannual and elevational characteristics of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), temperature, and precipitation were examined during the growing season from 1982 to 2015. We compared the elevational movement rates of the isolines of NDVI, temperature, and precipitation, and the sensitivities of elevational NDVI changes to temperature and precipitation. The results show that from 1982 to 2015, the elevational variation rate of isolines for NDVI mismatched with that for temperature and precipitation. The elevational movements of NDVI isolines were mostly controlled by precipitation at elevations below 2400 m and by the temperature at elevations above 2400 m. Precipitation appears to plays a role similar to temperature, and even a more effective role than the temperature at low elevations, in controlling elevational vegetation greenness changes at both spatial and interannual scales in the TP. This study highlights the regulation of temperature and precipitation on vegetation ecosystems along elevation gradients over the whole TP under global warming conditions.
