Problematic Internet Use and Smoking among Chinese Junior Secondary Students: The Mediating Role of Depressive Symptomatology and Family Support

Unpacking the relation between children's use of digital technologies and children's well-being: A scoping review

Over the last decade, a substantial number of studies have addressed children's use of technologies and their impact on well-being. Nonetheless, there is still a lack of clarity on the operationalisation of technology use, well-being, and the relation between the two. This scoping review intended to shed lights on Digital Technologies Use, its operationalisation, and the relation between Digital Technologies Negative Use (DTNU) and children's well-being. For the scope of the special issue we focused on negative use. Results showed two conceptualisations of DTNU: compulsive/addictive use of devices and the Internet (e.g., Internet addiction) and negative online experiences/risky behaviours (e.g., cyberbullying). Well-being in relation to DTNU was mainly studied in terms of psycho/social dimensions (e.g., depression), and a gap in cognitive well-being studies was identified. Study designs were largely quantitative, and, in most studies, well-being was considered as a predictor of DTNU. Also, research with children under 12 years was lacking. Future research on DTNU should look at: how dimensions of addiction and negative online experiences relate; provide more evidence on cognitive well-being; explore the interplay of well-being multiple components relying on integrative conceptual frameworks. The recent notion of digital well-being should also be explored considering the results of this review.

Family Support as Smoking Prevention during Transition from Early to Late Adolescence: A Study in 42 Countries

Family support has a beneficial impact on protecting health-risk behaviour in adolescents. This study aimed to explore whether family support is associated with risk of smoking during transition from early (11 years) to late (15 years) adolescence across 42 countries. The data from the cross-national Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study in 2017/2018 were employed (N = 195,966). Family support was measured using the four-item Family dimension of the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (sum score 20 or more was categorised as high family support). Smoking was defined as a reported cigarette smoking at least 1-2 days in the last 30 days. The association between smoking and family support was assessed using a prevalence ratio (PR) obtained from the multivariate Poisson regression. Over two thirds of adolescents reported high levels of support from their family. Family support was found to significantly decrease with age in most of the countries, with the boys reported high level of family support more often than girls. The adolescents who reported having low family support also were more likely to smoke compared to their peers who reported having high family support (PR = 1.81; 95% CI: 1.71-1.91 in boys, and PR = 2.19; 95% CI: 2.08-2.31 in girls). The countries with a stronger effect of family support in reducing smoking risk indicated lower rates of adolescent smoking as well as lower increases in the cigarette smoking prevalence during the age period from 11 to 15 years. This study reinforces the need for family support, which is an important asset helping adolescents to overcome the risk of smoking during their transition from early to late adolescence.

The relationship between dissociation symptoms, sleep disturbances, problematic internet use and online gaming in adolescents

Some adolescents admitted to the child and adolescent psychiatry outpatient clinic experience dissociative symptoms, such as hearing strange sounds, temporary blackouts, seeing images, changes in body parts, and looking at themselves from outside themselves. Some may also have sleep disturbances and a history of spending a long time on the internet. This study investigated the relationship between dissociative symptoms and sleep disorders, problematic internet usage (PIU),aggression and digital game addiction in adolescents. Participants completed the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory (STAXI), Problematic Internet Usage Scale (PIUS), Digital Game Addiction Scale (DGAS-7), Children's Depression Inventory (CDI), Adolescent Dissociative Experiences Scale (A-DES), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders Child Version (SCARED), and a sociodemographic form. Regression analyses were performed to identify associations. The sample consisted of 244 adolescents between 14 and 18 years of age (M = 15.93, SD = 0.90), of which 171 (70.1%) were girls and 73 (29.9%) were boys. Fifty-two (21.3%) were classified as having problematic online gaming (POG+), whereas 192 (78.7%) were classified as not having problematic online gaming (POG-). There was a difference between the two groups in all sub-dimensions of the PIUS, STAXI, CDI, and A-DES. Adolescents who had higher scores on the A-DES had a higher risk of sleep disorders and had higher scores on the PIU, CDI, and SCARED. The POG+ group dissociation scores were considerably higher than POG- group scores. Adolescents with high A-DES scores also had higher anger scores and weaker anger control skills. Consequently, sleep disorders, PIU, and POG may increase dissociative symptoms.

Cigarette Smoking and Dating App Use: Findings from a Survey in a Sample of Adults in Italy

Existing studies in the literature indicate an association between the use of dating apps and substance-related behaviours (i.e., alcohol consumption, drug consumption). However, to date, no studies investigated the relation between dating app use and smoking. This study aims to explore this association. A total of 1278 respondents completed an online ad hoc questionnaire assessing demographics, smoking habits, dating app use, motivations for using dating apps. Multiple logistic regression analyses were run to investigate the relation between demographics and dating apps use on tobacco consumption. Being active user was significantly associated with being smoker, light daily and moderate-to-heavy smoker. Among users, using apps with the motive of searching for friends accounted for lower odds of smoking, light daily smoking and moderate-to-heavy smoking. However, heavy dating app users were less likely to smoke, to be light daily smokers and to be moderate-to-heavy smokers. The study indicates an association between using the apps and smoking, suggesting that motives for using the apps and intensity of use may moderate this association.
