Coupling of kenaf Biochar and Magnetic BiFeO3 onto Cross-linked Chitosan for Enhancing Separation Performance and Cr(VI) Ions Removal Efficiency

Sulfite Poses a Risk of Hexavalent Chromium Rebound in Vadose Zone: A Challenge of the Stability of CrxFe1-x(OH)3

Cr(VI) rebound is the primary risk associated with the reduction remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated soil. The potential impact of sulfites, which can be produced by microbial activities or originate from sulfur-containing remediation agents, on the Cr(VI) rebound in the vadose zone has been overlooked. When sulfites are present, the stability of CrxFe1-x(OH)3 is compromised and significantly inferior to that of Cr(OH)3, as demonstrated in this paper. First, Fe acts as a catalyst for the conversion of adsorbed sulfite to SO4·-, which subsequently triggers the oxidation of Cr(III) and results in the rebound of Cr(VI). The heterogeneous catalysis by Fe on the surface of CrxFe1-x(OH)3 plays a predominant role, contributing to 78% of the actual oxidation of Cr(III) among all employed catalytic processes. The presence of ambient Cl- can exacerbate the rebound effect of Cr(VI) by promoting the generation of HOCl. Furthermore, a portion of released Cr(VI) was reduced to Cr(III) by dissolved sulfite in the presence of dissolved Fe as a catalyst, thereby increasing the dissolution and migration risk associated with CrxFe1-x(OH)3. Hence, the presence of sulfites results in a significant increase in the Cr(VI) rebound and Cr(III) release from CrxFe1-x(OH)3. This challenges the conventional understanding of the stability of CrxFe1-x(OH)3.

Preparation of High-Performance Zn-Based Catalysts Using Printing and Dyeing Wastewater and Petroleum Coke as a Carrier in Acetylene Acetoxylation

In this study, novel Zn catalysts were prepared by the wet impregnation method using printing and dyeing wastewater (PDW)-modified petroleum coke (petcoke) as a carrier, and they were applied to the acetylene acetoxylation. The pretreated petroleum coke has a high specific surface area which provides sufficient space for the loading of Zn. Calcination further increases catalyst activity, but when calcination temperatures exceed 1000 °C, a significant loss of Zn occurs, resulting in a dramatic decrease in catalyst activity. This enables the conversion of acetic acid up to 85%. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed that a large amount of N is introduced into PC from PDW, which changes the electron transfer around Zn. Temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) analysis revealed that the nitrogen-doped Zn(OAc)2 catalyst enhanced the catalytic activity by modulating the intensity of the catalyzed adsorption of acetic acid and acetylene. This study provides a new way to reuse petroleum coke and printing and dyeing wastewater to support the sustainable development of the vinyl acetate industry.

Removal of Tetracycline Hydrochloride from Water by Visible-Light Photocatalysis Using BiFeO3/BC Materials

It is widely considered that photocatalysis is an effective and eco-friendly method of dealing with organic pollutants dissolved in water. Nonetheless, photocatalysts still have some drawbacks, such as poor visible-light absorption, easy recombination of photogenerated charge carriers, and limited active sites. In this study, bismuth ferrite coupled with biochar material (BiFeO3/BC) was simply synthesized, and its photocatalysis reactivity was systemically examined under an irradiation of λ > 400 nm. The experimental results showed that under a relatively acidic environment, the removal rate of tetracycline hydrochloride reached 95%. Using a variety of characterization investigations, we analyzed the morphology structure and chemical composition of BiFeO3/BC. In consideration of simple preparation and high respondence toward visible light, further explorations of BiFeO3/BC and its properties and optimized degradation conditions are worthwhile.

Chitosan-Modified Biochars to Advance Research on Heavy Metal Ion Removal: Roles, Mechanism and Perspectives

The chitosan-modified biochars BC-CS 1-1, BC-CS 2-1 and BC-CS 4-1 were subjected to the synthetic application of biochar from agriculture waste and chitosan for the adsorption of Cu(II), Cd(II), Zn(II), Co(II) and Pb(II) ions from aqueous media. The results displayed a heterogeneous, well-developed surface. Additionally, the surface functional groups carboxyl, hydroxyl and phenol, determining the sorption mechanism and confirming the thermal stability of the materials, were present. The sorption evaluation was carried out as a function of the sorbent dose, pH, phase contact time, initial concentration of the solution and temperature. The maximum value of q_t for Pb(II)-BC-CS 4-1, 32.23 mg/g (C₀ 200 mg/L, mass 0.1 g, pH 5, 360 min), was identified. Nitric acid was applied for the sorbent regeneration with a yield of 99.13% for Pb(II)-BC-CS 2-1. The produced sorbents can be used for the decontamination of water by means of the cost-effective and high-performance method.

Fabrication of Fe/Bi bimetallic magnetic nano-oxides (IBBMNOs) as efficient remediator for hexavalent chromium from aqueous environment

In this study, highly efficient Fe/Bi bimetallic magnetic nanooxides (IBBMNOs) were used as adsorbent for the removal of Cr(VI) from an aqueous environment. The IBBMNOs were synthesized by a simple and facile chemical reduction method. After that, different analytical techniques were used to characterize the resultant nanomaterial. According to characterization results, the IBBMNOs are highly porous look like cotton beads with an average size of 60-69 nm. BET results show that IBBMNOs are highly porous with a high surface area. After optimizing different parameters such as pH, adsorbent dose, and time study, an excellent adsorption capacity was achieved up to 185 mg/g in 10 min. The calculated data of the adsorption process was well fitted with Langmuir and pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The prepared materials have good usability as compared to reported adsorbent materials can be used for five different cycles with good removal efficiency of chromium ion from aqueous samples. Chitosan-modified biochar: Preparation, modifications, mechanisms and applications

The chitosan-modified biochar composite, as a carbohydrate polymer, has received increasing attention and becomes a research hotspot. It is a promising impurity adsorption material, which has potential application value in the agricultural environment fields such as soil improvement and sewage purification. The composite can combine the advantages of biochar with chitosan, and the resulting composite usually exhibits a great improvement in its surface functional groups, adsorption sites, stability, and adsorption properties. In addition, compared to other adsorbents, the composite truly achieves the concept of "waste control by waste". In this paper, the preparation method, composite classification, adsorption mechanism, and models of biochar modified by chitosan are introduced, meanwhile, we also review and summarize their effects on the decontamination of wastewater and soil. In addition to common heavy metal ions, we also review the adsorption and removal of some other organic/inorganic pollutants, including (1) drug residues; (2) dyes; (3) phosphates; (4) radionuclides; (5) perfluorochemicals, etc. Moreover, challenges and prospects for the composite are presented and further studies are called for the chitosan-biochar composite. We believe that the composite will lead to further achievements in the field of environmental remediation.

Insight into synergies between Acinetobacter sp. AL-6 and pomelo peel biochar in a hybrid process for highly efficient manganese removal

The manganese contamination of groundwater is a global issue that needs to be solved urgently. In this study, a hybrid process between pomelo peel biochar(BC) and Acinetobacter sp. AL-6 (strain AL-6) was established to remove manganese from water. The results showed that microbe-biochar composite had removed 98.19% of manganese (800 mg L^-1) within 48 h. Compared with two separate systems (biochar, strain AL-6), the co-system (strain AL-6 and BC composite) had an excellent synergy effect on manganese removal. The average removal rate of manganese in the synergistic system was 14.08 mg L^-1 h^-1, which was 6.41 times higher than strain AL-6, 3.45 times higher than biochar, and even at 2.24 times their sum. In addition, the scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the bioassay indicated that many strains were attached to biochar and had vigorous biological activity. The FTIR results showed that the functional groups of OH, CO, CO, CH₂, and CH played a vital role in removing manganese. And the correlation analysis shows that biochar with strains AL-6 has a highly synergistic effect on manganese removal. Meanwhile, the composite material can maintain excellent manganese removal efficiency under different pH conditions. Besides, in the sequence batch reactor (SBR) inoculating with the microbe-biochar composite, more than 96% of manganese was removed, which far exceeded the treatment efficiency of free bacteria in the SBR. Hence, biochar-immobilized AL-6 has great potential and can be applied to degrade manganese polluted wastewater.

Recent Developments in Chitosan-Based Adsorbents for the Removal of Pollutants from Aqueous Environments

The quality of water is continuously under threat as increasing concentrations of pollutants escape into the aquatic environment. However, these issues can be alleviated by adsorbing pollutants onto adsorbents. Chitosan and its composites are attracting considerable interest as environmentally acceptable adsorbents and have the potential to remove many of these contaminants. In this review the development of chitosan-based adsorbents is described and discussed. Following a short introduction to the extraction of chitin from seafood wastes, followed by its conversion to chitosan, the properties of chitosan are described. Then, the emerging chitosan/carbon-based materials, including magnetic chitosan and chitosan combined with graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes, biochar, and activated carbon and also chitosan-silica composites are introduced. The applications of these materials in the removal of various heavy metal ions, including Cr(VI), Pb(II), Cd(II), Cu(II), and different cationic and anionic dyes, phenol and other organic molecules, such as antibiotics, are reviewed, compared and discussed. Adsorption isotherms and adsorption kinetics are then highlighted and followed by details on the mechanisms of adsorption and the role of the chitosan and the carbon or silica supports. Based on the reviewed papers, it is clear, that while some challenges remain, chitosan-based materials are emerging as promising adsorbents.

Eucheuma cottonii Seaweed-Based Biochar for Adsorption of Methylene Blue Dye

Pollution from dye containing wastewater leads to a variety of environmental problems, which can destroy plant life and eco-systems. This study reports development of a seaweed-based biochar as an adsorbent material for efficient adsorption of methylene blue (MB) dye from synthetic wastewater. The Eucheuma cottonii seaweed biochar was developed through pyrolysis using a tube furnace with N2 gas, and the properties were later improved by sulfuric acid treatment. The adsorption studies were conducted in a batch experimental setup under initial methylene blue concentrations of 50 to 200 mg/L, solution pH of 2 to 10, and temperature of 25 to 75 °C. The characterization results show that the developed biochar had a mesoporous pore morphology. The adsorbent possessed the surface area, pore size, and pore volume of 640 m2/g, 2.32 nm, and 0.54 cm3/g, respectively. An adsorption test for 200 mg/L of initial methylene blue at pH 4 showed the best performance. The adsorption data of the seaweed-based biochar followed the Langmuir isotherm adsorption model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, with the corresponding R2 of 0.994 and 0.995. The maximum adsorption capacity of methylene blue using the developed seaweed‑based biochar was 133.33 mg/g. The adsorption followed the chemisorption mechanism, which occurred via the formation of a monolayer of methylene blue dye on the seaweed-based biochar surface. The adsorption performance of the produced seaweed biochar is comparable to that of other commercial adsorbents, suggesting its potential for large-scale applications.
