Life Cycle Impact Assessment of Garbage-Classification Based Municipal Solid Waste Management Systems: A Comparative Case Study in China

Life cycle assessment of Tehran Municipal solid waste during the COVID-19 pandemic and environmental impacts prediction using machine learning

Life cycle assessment and machine learning were combined to find the best option for Tehran's waste management for future pandemics. The ReCipe results showed the waste's destructive effects after COVID-19 were greater than before due to waste composition changes. Plastic waste has changed from 7.5 to 11%. Environmental burdens of scenarios were Sc-1 (increase composting to 50%) > Sc-3 > Sc-4 > Sc-b2 > Sc-5 > Sc-2 (increase recycling from 9 to 20%). The artificial neural network and gradient-boosted regression tree could predict environmental impacts with high R2. Based on the results, the environmental burdens of solid waste after COVID-19 should be investigated.

Direct lactic acid production from household food waste by lactic acid bacteria

China is vigorously promoting garbage classification, but the treatment of classified waste, especially household food waste (HFW) has yet to be studied. Lactic acid (LA), a high value-added platform molecule has broad market prospects. Although there have been many studies on the production of LA from food waste, open fermentation often produces lots of by-products, while the traditional fermentation under a pure bacteria system often requires the saccharification process, which increases the production cost. We sought to analyze the comprehensive properties of classified HFW in Shanghai, then to produce LA by inoculating lactic acid bacteria (LAB) directly. The effects of strains, temperature, sterilized or not, initial pH, inoculum size, and substrate concentration on LA production were investigated. HFW was rich in nutrients and growth factors which provided the possibility for direct LA production from HFW by inoculating LAB. The results showed that Lactobacillus rhamnosus ATCC 7469, Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus all could be used as the inoculum, however, no significant synergistic effect of the three strains on LA production was found. LA concentration of 30.25 g/L at 37 °C, pH 6.8 could be obtained by inoculating Lactobacillus rhamnosus ATCC 7469 from sterilized HFW. High inoculum size and substrate concentration resulted in high LA concentration, but not high LA yield. The result of ANOVA indicated that there was a significantly positive relationship between substrate concentration and LA concentration (r = 0.942, p < 0.01), while no statistically significant difference between these groups at different inoculum size was evident (p = 0.318). In addition, an average LA concentration of 26.8 g/L, LA yield of 0.20 g/g TCOD was obtained by repeated batch fermentation for 32 d.

Thermo-soil weathering and life cycle assessment of carbon black, silica and cellulose nanocrystal filled rubber nanocomposites

Carbon black (CB) and silica (Sil) as rubber reinforcement have raised environmental concerns for being high resources consumptive and less susceptible towards biodegradability. Cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) has demonstrated great potentials for use as biodegradable nanofillers in rubber nanocomposites while evaluation of its environmental impacts with optimal end-of-life (EOL) choices is not carried out. To simulate realistic EOL, thermo-oxidative aging and soil burial aging behaviors of rubber nanocomposites with 33.3% filler were performed. The environmental weathering performance modeled with the help of life cycle assessment (LCA) illustrates increased biodegradation susceptibility with partial replacement of CB or Sil with CNC in the nanocomposites, hence promoting the environmental solutions for waste minimalization by enhancing the biodegradability potentials. In terms of LCA, the CNC incorporation contributes more to the environmental impacts in manufacturing but greatly lowers the EOL choices, by reducing the global warming potential values.

Dynamic routing for waste collection and transportation with multi-compartment electric vehicle using smart waste bins

The municipal solid waste (MSW) collection and transportation issue has been studied by numerous researchers; however, a few studies consider the chance-constrained programming for co-collection of sorted waste with electric vehicles (EVs). Therefore, this article attempts to study on the chance-constrained collection and transportation problem for sorted waste with multiple separated compartments EVs. Considering the uncertainty of the waste generation rate under the scenario of application of smart waste bins, chance-constrained programming is applied to transform the uncertain model into a certain one. A Chance-Constrained Multi-Compartment Electric Vehicle Routing Problem (CCMCEVRP) is introduced and the corresponding mathematical formulation is established. A diversity-enhanced particle swarm optimisation with neighbourhood search and simulated annealing (DNSPSOSA) is proposed to solve this problem, and effectiveness of the proposed algorithms is verified by extensive numerical experiments on the newly generated instances. In addition, the application of the model is tested by comparing different compartment and different type vehicles. It is found that, compared with fuel vehicles, 32.66% of the average cost could be saved with EVs. Furthermore, the rate of cost-saving of EVs increases with the increase in the number of compartments: the improvement rate of cost-saving of two-compartment EVs and three-compartment EVs is 52.77% and 68.13%, respectively.

Climate Change Impact of the Development in Household Waste Management in China

The potential climate change impacts of the development in Chinese household waste management, with less landfilling, more incineration with energy recovery, and source-separated food waste treated in biorefineries, were assessed through a life cycle assessment. When the waste management system interacts with a fossil-based energy system, landfilling produces a load of 144 kg CO₂-eq/ton wet waste, while incineration shows a saving of 36 kg CO₂-eq/ton wet waste. The introduction of food waste source separation lowers climate change impacts by an additional 33 kg CO₂-eq/ton at a 60% sorting efficiency. As the Chinese energy system lowers its climate change impact over the next 30 years, energy recovery from waste treatment will change its relative contribution to climate change. In nonfossil energy systems, landfilling is estimated to have a climate change load of 180-240 kg CO₂-eq/ton wet waste, while incineration, including combinations with the source-separation of food waste, will have a load of 310-540 kg CO₂-eq/ton wet waste. These large intervals are due to waste composition uncertainty. However, considering a 20 year CH₄ characterization factor representing a shorter time perspective, the impacts from landfilling are more dramatic due to the large methane release. This significant climate change impact calls for an increased focus on the developments in Chinese household waste management. The key issues identified may also apply to other countries.

Does Environmental Policy Help Green Industry? Evidence from China's Promotion of Municipal Solid Waste Sorting

As municipal solid waste severely threatens human health and the ecological environment, since 2019, China has started to fully practice MSW sorting in all prefecture-level cities. In this paper, we apply the event study and difference-in-difference methods to investigate how China’s green policy of promoting MSW sorting influences listed waste sorting companies from the perspective of investors’ short-term and long-term reactions. This paper finds that investors are not sensitive to the introduction of MSW sorting in the short term, the new environmental policy does not relieve the financing constraints of related enterprises in the long run, and the financing constraints of private enterprises are stricter than those of state-owned enterprises. These findings indicate that China’s current encouragement of garbage sorting is not efficient enough as it has not brought benefits to the waste classification industry yet. More measures need to be taken to eliminate uncertainties in urban waste sorting. Our paper enriches the research on China’s waste sorting practices and provides new evidence of the effects of environmental policy on related firms from the perspective of green industry.
