The Spanish Family Quality of Life Scales under and over 18 Years Old: Psychometric Properties and Families' Perceptions

Variations in Perceptions of Well-Being within Families of Youths with Intellectual Disabilities in Saudi Arabia

This study investigates the family well-being among Saudi Arabian families with youth who have an intellectual disability. A sample of 148 family members, including parents and other relatives, was surveyed on emotional well-being, family interactions, and parenting. This study aimed to explore the unique challenges and dynamics within these families, providing insights into how an intellectual disability in a youth affects the family unit. The research highlights a gap in understanding the specific impacts of intellectual disability on family life in the Saudi context. Key findings include variations in family quality of life perceptions among different family members, with fathers showing distinct levels of satisfaction. This study contributes to the development of culturally sensitive support strategies and policies, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions to enhance the well-being of these families in Saudi Arabia.

Experiences and Challenges of Health Professionals in Implementing Family-Centred Planning: A Qualitative Study

Early childhood intervention is crucial for the development of minors with disabilities or at risk. Family-centred planning (FCP), which involves families in care, stands out in this context. Despite its importance, little is known about professionals' experiences of its implementation. FCP aims to tailor services to the needs of the family and the child within the Spanish health system. This study highlights the importance of assessing professionals' perceptions of FCP. Professionals rooted in traditional approaches may resist change. To assess the implementation of FCPs, the study explores the perspectives of 25 healthcare professionals using qualitative methods to assess their experiences. The qualitative descriptive phenomenological design, following Giorgi's modified Husserlian approach, seeks to understand the essence of the phenomenon from the participants' perspective. Two main themes emerged: (1) a social and work organization that perpetuates rehabilitation or early stimulation practices and (2) a socio-family and work organization that promotes FCP adherence, along with subthemes and units of meaning. The evaluation reveals common challenges, such as the need for solid training and institutional support. Evaluating the experience of professionals is essential to overcome barriers and ensure the successful implementation of FCPs. Administrators have an important role to play in providing social, health, and educational alternatives.

[Angelman syndrome in adulthood]

INTRODUCTION

Angelman syndrome (AS) is widely described in childhood, but few studies have been conducted in adulthood and most of them report a small number of patients or specific conditions, such as epilepsy or sleep.

AIM

The aim of this study is to describe AS in adulthood in our centre, the special needs it requires, and the medical and social support to improve care and to provide a better transition from the paediatric service to units for adults.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

We collected patients with genetically confirmed AS, and described demographic, medical and social data by reviewing medical records, telephone interviews with the primary caregiver and three standardised sleep, dependency and quality of life scales.

RESULTS

Thirty patients with a median age of 22.7 years were included: 22 were deletions, 27 had a history of epilepsy and 13 were on treatment involving at least two antiepileptic drugs. The most frequent comorbidities after epilepsy were psychiatric symptoms, scoliosis, overweight, constipation and ophthalmological problems. Forty per cent required hospital admissions in adulthood, five were institutionalised and 24 received non-medical therapies. The doctor in charge was the neurologist in most cases, followed by the neuropaediatrician.

CONCLUSIONS

Studies that examine the natural history beyond childhood are warranted. This is the first Spanish review of adults with AS that covers a broad spectrum of social and medical conditions of these patients.

Measuring Family Quality of Life: Scoping Review of the Available Scales and Future Directions

The lack of quality of life is a key issue for families with children with an intellectual disability. While the quality of life for people with disabilities has previously been researched as an individual variable, this has now shifted to include family members. The purpose of this study was to conduct a review of the studies measuring the quality of life of families with an intellectually disabled member, in order to identify the most commonly used scales and their psychometric properties.

METHOD

Data were collected from six databases (ERIC, Web of Science, Scopus, CINAHL, MedLine, and Google Scholar), and this search yielded 3948 studies. One hundred and twenty studies that met the inclusion criteria were included in this study.

RESULTS

Nine scales were used in the last years to measure the quality of life for families with individuals with an intellectual disability. The Beach Center scale was the most common scale, followed by the Family Quality of Life Survey and the World Health Organization's quality of life assessment (WHOQoL-BREF). The results showed that the included studies in the review lack the consideration of a broader population representing the different types of cultures with different socioeconomic backgrounds. Key aspects used to assess the FQoL are environmental factors (proximal and distal factors), as well as economic factors.

CONCLUSION

Although the operationalization of the FQoL often incudes several subthemes, a general agreement regarding which domains of the FQoL need to be included in the measurements, and these do not exist right now. Moreover, multidimensional scales are still rare.

Rasch validation of the Arabic version of the beach center family quality of life scale (BCFQOL-AR)

Aim

This study aimed to examine the dimensionality of the BCFQOL-AR using Rasch analysis.

Method

The sample consisted of 320 families having a member with intellectual or developmental disabilities. Rasch analysis was used to validate the dimensionality of the scale. The participants were from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Results

The BCFQOL-AR 25-item scale was multidimensional. Rasch analyses support the unidimensionality of the five subscales. There were no indicators of differential item function for any of the items, regardless of sex or age.

Conclusion

The BCFQOL-AR is a multidimensional scale that measures families with members who are satisfied with their quality of life. Therefore, obtaining a total score at the subscale level is supported and showed that each of the five subscales of the BCFQOL can be used alone. This study partially supports the practices used with other versions of the scale, by providing the statistical base, where means were used at the subscale level in different countries.

The relationship between family quality of life, mindful attention, and social support in families of people with autism spectrum disorder

Background: In families of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the added difficulties they face may influence their perception of family quality of life (FQoL). It is important to identify factors which foster their perceived wellbeing and are susceptible to intervention. Our aim was to explore the association between mindful attention and FQoL in these families controlling their perceived social support. Method: Ninety-six parents of people with ASD were evaluated using the Mindful Attention and Awareness Scale (MAAS), the Support Questionnaire for Parents with Children with Disability, and the Spanish Family Quality of Life Scale for families with underage members with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Results: Multiple regression analyses revealed that high levels of mindful attention positively predicted FQoL after controlling the influence of social support. Conclusions: Practical implications are discussed in terms of family support interventions. We conclude that mindful attention interventions may be useful for families with children and adolescents with ASD to improve their FQoL.
