Abstract
Objective To find out the association of physical activity, dietary habits and factors associated with depression among medical students of Sindh, Pakistan, during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Methods An online cross-sectional study was conducted between June and August, 2020, on medical students from three medical institutions of Sindh, Pakistan. The study comprised three structured questionnaires related to demographic details, physical activity, dietary and sleep habits, COVID-19 pandemic-associated factors and patient health questionnaire, PHQ-9. A total of 864 students completed the questionnaires and participated in the study. The data was analysed on SPSS version 23. Results Our study showed that 244 (28.2%) medical students had mild depression, 192 (22.2%) had moderate depression, 80 (9.3%) had moderately severe depression and 80 (9.3%) had severe depression during the COVID-19 pandemic. Out of 864 students, 268 (31%) had no depression. Socioeconomic status, body mass index (BMI), chronic disease/comorbidity, addiction and non-medical prescription drug use were found to be statistically significant predictors of depression among medical students. On multilogistic regression analysis, physical activity, social media/app use and sleeping habits during COVID-19 were associated with depression (p-value < 0.05). Conclusion The COVID-19 pandemic adversely affected physical activity and sleeping habits in association with depression among medical students. Promoting healthy eating habits, adequate physical activity, and a healthy lifestyle, particularly among students during lockdowns, is a critical component of coping with mental stress and depression. The findings of this study will aid in future research and campaign design in preparation for future pandemics and lockdowns.

Abstract
Sleep disorders are a serious health problem worldwide, and insomnia is their most common manifestation. An increasing number of people have insomnia every year, young adults, especially. Due to the importance that sleep has in almost every aspect of our lives, the need to monitor disturbances in circadian rhythms has arisen. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the prevalence of sleep disorders among Polish students, including their quality of life (QOL) and drug use patterns. The study also investigated associations between sleep, QoL, and drug use. The study was conducted in 2016–2021 based on the self-made sociodemographic questionnaire, as well as standardized psychometric tools: Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS), Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), and Manchester Short Assessment of quality of life (MANSA). A total of 14,844 students participated in the study. The majority were women (80.7%), of which 3425 (23.1%) were medical students, with the most numerous representing medical and dental faculties, 1884 (57.2%). Before the COVID-19 pandemic, 52.1% of the surveys were collected; 54.1% of respondents had insomnia as indicated by the AIS scores, and 26.1% displayed sleepiness during the day. Female students, the first-year college students, more often suffered from sleep disorders. Drug use was widespread among Polish students, correlating with sleep assessment results and QoL. In conclusion, sleep disorders are a significant clinical problem among Polish students. Female and junior students’ years are more prone to sleep deprivation. Insufficient sleep can be associated with a lower QoL score and psychoactive substance use. The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on sleep are not conclusive, because there was decreasing quality for longer sleep durations. In order to analyze these associations, there is a need for further in-depth study.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic functional gastrointestinal disorder (FGID), in which etiology and pathogenesis are not fully explored. There is an ongoing need for more population studies adhering to new ROME IV criteria. In the current study, which follows our previous investigation among participants of the Woodstock Rock Festival in Poland, we aimed to evaluate the prevalence of IBS and its relation to age, gender, education, and IBS type. METHODS Rome IV criteria questionnaire was used to assess abdominal complaints of 386 participants of the Woodstock Rock festival 2018. RESULTS Analyzed data revealed that Rome IV criteria were met by 42 participants (11.41%), 11 men and 31 women (p = 0.0028), with following types of IBS: IBS-M (mixed form) 55%, IBS-D (with diarrhea) 33%, IBS-U (unclassified) 10%, IBS-C (with constipation) 2%. No statistically significant correlation between IBS prevalence and age, gender, or education (p > 0.05) was found. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of IBS among major rock festival participants in Poland was high. Women met the criteria more often than men, which is consistent with global epidemiology for many years. Among participants of the Woodstock Rock Festival, the most frequent subtype was IBS-M, the rarest-IBS-C. There is a need of conducting cohort studies in bigger groups in our population.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way many people live. To assess its impact on sleep quality and quantity, blue light exposure, and the mental health of Polish university students, a cross-sectional survey was conducted. Almost half of the participants were medical students (47.62%; n = 630). The majority of students were suffering from insomnia (58.13%, n = 769). Almost every third student was sleeping less than 7 h a day (30.39%, n = 402). Our study showed that a short sleep duration correlates with poorer mental health outcomes. Respondents who declared sadness and depression were more likely to suffer from insomnia (OR = 5.6997, 95% CI: 4.3641-7.4441). Difficulty with tasks was also more likely to co-occur with insomnia (OR = 5.4723, 95% CI: 4.3007 to 6.9630). The results of this study showed that the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to the deterioration of sleep quality and quantity as well as the psychological well-being of Polish students. It is important to take steps to promote proper sleeping habits to alleviate the risk of mental health disorders in this group of people.

Abstract
Increasing evidence suggests there is a relationship between anxiety disorders and sleep deprivation (SD). However, underlying molecular mechanism remains elusive and currently there is no effective therapy to negate the effects of SD. We established a mouse model of acute SD with or without melatonin supplementation. We found that melatonin supplementation suppressed an increase of corticosterone level caused by SD. Behavioral data indicated that 72 h SD exposure induced anxiety-like behaviors, as evidenced by the reduced central area travels in OFT. Immunohistochemical staining and western blot analysis revealed that SD promoted neuronal loss by inducing pro-apoptotic protein Bax and cleaved-caspase-3 and autophagic proteins (LC3II, ATG5 and Beclin1) and reducing the levels of the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2. In contrast, the aforementioned SD-inductions were reversed by supplementation using 20 mg/kg and 40 mg/kg melatonin in SD mice. Meanwhile, we observed that melatonin reduced activated gliosis via attenuation of Iba1, and inhibited increase of anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-4 and IL-10) and the decrease of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6 and TNF-α). Furthermore, melatonin supplementation inverted the SD-induced the decline of antioxidant enzyme activities (T-AOC and CAT etc) and the increase of p-P65 and p-IκB proteins in the hippocampus. On the whole, our findings revealed that melatonin attenuated SD-induced anxiety-like behavior via ameliorating oxidative stress, activation of NF-κB pathway, neuroinflammation, apoptosis and excessive autophagy.
