Are the Self-esteem, Self-efficacy, and Interpersonal Interaction of Junior College Students Related to the Solitude Capacity?

Relationships between self-efficacy beliefs and personal factors in final-year medical students

BACKGROUND

Medical students entering postgraduate training often feel ill-prepared for clinical practice. This has implications for physician well-being and the quality of patient care. Self-efficacy represents an important contributing factor in the transition process. Identifying student characteristics associated with self-efficacy is important in order to design possible interventions to enhance self-efficacy. Therefore, we assessed the relationship between final-year medical students' general self-efficacy with their personality traits, need for cognitive closure, and medical knowledge in order to identify factors contributing to the assessment and improvement of self-efficacy.

METHODS

Self-assessed data regarding general self-efficacy was collected from 188 final-year medical students who participated in a first day of residency simulation between March and September 2023. We also assessed several personal factors including the HEXACO Personality Inventory Revised (HEXACO-PI-R), a short scale to measure Need for Cognitive Closure (16-NCCS), and students' medical exam grades (M2). We ran multiple correlation and multiple linear regression analyses across all variables. We then added a second analysis each with general self-efficacy and HEXACO domains Emotionality and Extraversion on facet level, which both showed significant associations with self-efficacy in the respective first analysis.

RESULTS

Across all variables, self-efficacy correlated significantly negatively with Emotionality and positively with Extraversion. Both domains also significantly predicted self-efficacy accordingly in the regression model. On a facet analysis, Sentimentality (Emotionality) and Sociability (Extraversion) did not correlate significantly with self-efficacy. In the regression model only the facets Sociability (Extraversion) and Fearfulness (Emotionality) significantly predicted lower self-efficacy. Furthermore, self-efficacy correlated significantly and negatively with the Need for Cognitive Closure (NCC). Additionally, significant positive and negative correlations of the NCC with both Emotionality and Extraversion, respectively, as well as a significant positive correlation for exam grades (M2) and Extraversion were found.

CONCLUSIONS

Self-efficacy contributes to medial students' preparedness for clinical practice and can be predicted by several personal factors. Students should learn and reflect about these factors and need to be supported in increasing their self-efficacy and its self-assessment towards their transition to postgraduate training. Construction of a specific instrument for self-efficacy assessment utilizing the insight provided by the findings is proposed as a next step.

Relationship between physical exercise, bullying, and being bullied among junior high school students: the multiple mediating effects of emotional management and interpersonal relationship distress

OBJECTIVE

This paper investigates the relationships between physical activity (PA), school bullying, emotion regulation self-efficacy (ERS), and interpersonal relationship distress (IRD) among junior high school students. It also examines the underlying mechanisms of school bullying to provide insights into reducing adolescent bullying and to lay the groundwork for preventing and controlling aggressive behaviors.

METHODS

A survey was conducted on 484 students (240 males, 12.18 ± 0.8 years) from 4 secondary schools using the Physical Activity Rating Scale (PARS), Emotional Management Self-Efficacy Scale (EMSS), Interpersonal Relationship Distress Scale (IRDS), and Campus Bullying Scale (CBS) to examine the effects among the variables. A stratified random sampling method was used to select the sample, and data were collected with a structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed using SPSS 24.0 and AMOS 24.0 statistical software. The analysis included Pearson correlation analysis, structural equation modeling, and bias-corrected percentile Bootstrap methods.

RESULTS

(1) PA negatively predicts IRD, which in turn has an indirect effect on bullying (PA → IRD → Bullying), ES = -0.063. Additionally, EM and IRD act as mediators between PA and school bullying (PA → EM → IRD → Bullying), ES = 0.025. (2) PA negatively predicts IRD, which has an indirect effect on being bullied (PA → IRD → Being bullied), ES = -0.044. EM and IRD serve as chain mediators between PA and being bullied (PA → EM → IRD → Being bullied), ES = -0.071.

CONCLUSION

PA can positively predict bullying, but it can be mitigated through EM to reduce IRD, thereby decreasing the occurrence of campus bullying and being bullied.

Solitude can be good-If you see it as such: Reappraisal helps lonely people experience solitude more positively

OBJECTIVE

Solitude is a common experience that can elicit both positive (e.g., relaxation) and negative (e.g., loneliness) emotions. But can changing the way we think about solitude improve its emotional effects? In a previous study, our team found that positively reframing solitude buffers against a reduction in positive affect when alone. Yet, it is unknown whether people who are lonely-and thus more likely to experience solitude negatively-benefit from modifying their beliefs about being alone.

METHOD

Here, we test whether reframing solitude as a beneficial experience or de-stigmatizing loneliness helps people experiencing moderate-to-severe loneliness (N = 224) feel more positive emotion and less negative emotion during solitude. We randomly assigned participants to read about either the benefits of solitude, the high prevalence of loneliness, or a control topic. Then, participants spent 10 min alone in the laboratory. State affect was assessed before and after the solitude period.

RESULTS

Across conditions, the solitude period reduced high-arousal positive (e.g., excited) and high-arousal negative (e.g., anxious) affect. Notably, people who read about the benefits of solitude experienced a significantly larger increase in low-arousal positive affect compared with the control condition.

CONCLUSION

Our findings indicate that lonely individuals can more readily reap the emotional benefits of solitude when they reframe solitude as an experience that can enhance their well-being.

The Impact of Physical Education Based on the Adventure Education Programme on Self-Esteem and Social Competences of Adolescent Boys

The objective of this study is to analyse the impact of physical education based on the adventure education programme on the social competences of adolescent boys. The participants (n = 70) were 1st grade high school students between 15 and 16 years old. Adolescents' social competences were measured using the Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) and Social Competence Questionnaire (SCQ) before and after the intervention. An experimental repeated-measures design was used, with a comparison group. ANOVA (2 × 2) for interaction group x time showed statistical significance in competences revealed in situations of social exposure (F_{1, 68} = 5.16, p < 0.05, partial η² = 0.07) and competences revealed in situations requiring assertiveness (F_{1, 68} = 4.73, p < 0.05, partial η² = 0.07). Using the adventure education (AE) programme may be recommended as a way of developing social skill competences revealed in situations of social exposure and competences revealed in situations requiring the assertiveness of adolescents through physical activity that can be easily integrated into the school environment.
