Disinfection of Wastewater by UV-Based Treatment for Reuse in a Circular Economy Perspective. Where Are We at?

Wavelength synergistic effects in continuous flow-through water disinfection systems

The past decade's development of UV LEDs has fueled significant research in water disinfection, with widespread debate surrounding the potential synergies of multiple UV wavelengths. This study analyses the use of three UV sources (265, 275, and 310 nm) on the inactivation of Escherichia coli bacteria in two water matrixes. At maximum intensity in wastewater, individual inactivation experiments in a single pass set-up (Flow rate = 2 L min-1, Residence time = 0.75 s) confirmed the 265 nm light source to be the most effective (2.2 ± 0.2 log units), while the 310 nm led to the lowest inactivation rate (0.0003 ± 7.03× 10-5 log units). When a combination of the three wavelengths was used, an average log reduction of 4.4 ± 0.2 was observed in wastewater. For combinations of 265 and 275 nm, the average log reductions were similar to the sum of individual log reductions. For combinations involving the use of 310 nm, a potential synergistic effect was investigated by the use of robust statistical analysis techniques. It is concluded that combinations of 310 nm with 265 nm or 275 nm devices, in sequential and simultaneous mode, present a significant synergy at both intensities due to the emission spectra of the selected LEDs, ensuring the possibility of two inactivation mechanisms. Finally, the electrical energy per order of inactivation found the three-wavelength combination to be the most energy efficient (0.39 ± 0.05, 0.36 ± 0.01 kWh m-3, at 50% and 100% dose, respectively, in wastewater) among the synergistic combinations.

Detection of mecA positive staphylococcal species in a wastewater treatment plant in South Africa

We investigated the prevalence of antibiotic resistant staphylococci and detection of resistant, virulence, and Spa genes in a South African wastewater treatment plant. Species identified were Staphylococcus aureus, S. lentus, S. arlettae, S. cohnii, S. haemolyticus, S. nepalensis, S. sciuri (now Mammaliicoccus sciuri), and S. xylosus. Isolates showed high resistance to methicillin (91%), ampicillin (89%), ciprofloxacin (86%), amoxycillin (80%), ceftazidime (74%), and cloxacillin (71%). Multiple antibiotic resistance (MAR) index for the isolates exceeded 0.2 (0.50-0.70). Among the isolates, 77% were mecA-positive. All S. aureus strains were positive for nuc and 7 Spa gene types. The present study highlights possibility of treated wastewaters being potential reservoir for antibiotic-resistant staphylococci. This is a cause for concern as wastewater effluents are decanted into environmental waters and these are, in many cases, used for various purposes including recreation (full contact), religious (full body submersion), and drinking water for some rural communities and water for livestock.

Multi-criteria decision-making for prioritizing photocatalytic processes followed by TiO2-MIL-53(Fe) characterization and application for diazinon removal

Multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) can introduce the best option based on evidence. We integrated the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and the Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to the Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) to prioritize the alternatives for photocatalytic diazinon removal in a bench scale and characterized TiO₂-MIL-53(Fe) for this purpose. Criteria and alternatives were listed based on systematic literature reviews and expert opinions. Then, AHP and TOPSIS questionnaires were developed and distributed to an expert panel for pairwise comparisons. We converted the linguistic variables into the corresponding fuzzy values and used R for mathematical calculations. Then, TiO₂-MIL-53(Fe) was synthesized and characterized for diazinon removal under LED visible light. The AHP ranked criteria as availability > degradation efficiency > safety for the environment > material cost > energy consumption > mineralization efficiency > photocatalyst reusability > safety for personnel > equipment cost. Based on TOPSIS, the order of alternatives was TiO₂-containing/Visible light > ZnO-containing/UV light > TiO₂-containing/UV light > ZnO-containing/Visible light > WO₃-containing/UV light. With a bandgap of 1.8 eV, TiO₂-MIL-53(Fe) could remove 89.35% of diazinon at 10 mg/L diazinon concentration, 750 mg/L catalyst dose, pH 6.8, and 180-min reaction time. Hybrid AHP-TOPSIS identified the best option for photocatalytic diazinon removal from aqueous solutions. Thus, MCDM techniques can use systematic review results to overcome the uncertainty in designing experimental studies.

The Minus Approach Can Redefine the Standard of Practice of Drinking Water Treatment

Chlorine-based disinfection for drinking water treatment (DWT) was one of the 20th century's great public health achievements, as it substantially reduced the risk of acute microbial waterborne disease. However, today's chlorinated drinking water is not unambiguously safe; trace levels of regulated and unregulated disinfection byproducts (DBPs), and other known, unknown, and emerging contaminants (KUECs), present chronic risks that make them essential removal targets. Because conventional chemical-based DWT processes do little to remove DBPs or KUECs, alternative approaches are needed to minimize risks by removing DBP precursors and KUECs that are ubiquitous in water supplies. We present the "Minus Approach" as a toolbox of practices and technologies to mitigate KUECs and DBPs without compromising microbiological safety. The Minus Approach reduces problem-causing chemical addition treatment (i.e., the conventional "Plus Approach") by producing biologically stable water containing pathogens at levels having negligible human health risk and substantially lower concentrations of KUECs and DBPs. Aside from ozonation, the Minus Approach avoids primary chemical-based coagulants, disinfectants, and advanced oxidation processes. The Minus Approach focuses on bank filtration, biofiltration, adsorption, and membranes to biologically and physically remove DBP precursors, KUECs, and pathogens; consequently, water purveyors can use ultraviolet light at key locations in conjunction with smaller dosages of secondary chemical disinfectants to minimize microbial regrowth in distribution systems. We describe how the Minus Approach contrasts with the conventional Plus Approach, integrates with artificial intelligence, and can ultimately improve the sustainability performance of water treatment. Finally, we consider barriers to adoption of the Minus Approach.

Occurrence and Treatment of Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria Present in Surface Water

According to the World Health Organization, antibiotic resistance is one of the main threats to global health. The excessive use of several antibiotics has led to the widespread distribution of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes in various environment matrices, including surface water. In this study, total coliforms, Escherichia coli and enterococci, as well as total coliforms and Escherichia coli resistant to ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, ampicillin, streptomycin, and imipenem, were monitored in several surface water sampling events. A hybrid reactor was used to test the efficiency of membrane filtration, direct photolysis (using UV-C light emitting diodes that emit light at 265 nm and UV-C low pressure mercury lamps that emit light at 254 nm), and the combination of both processes to ensure the retention and inactivation of total coliforms and Escherichia coli as well as antibiotic-resistant bacteria (total coliforms and Escherichia coli) present in river water at occurrence levels. The membranes used (unmodified silicon carbide membranes and the same membrane modified with a photocatalytic layer) effectively retained the target bacteria. Direct photolysis using low-pressure mercury lamps and light-emitting diode panels (emitting at 265 nm) achieved extremely high levels of inactivation of the target bacteria. The combined treatment (unmodified and modified photocatalytic surfaces in combination with UV-C and UV-A light sources) successfully retained the bacteria and treated the feed after 1 h of treatment. The hybrid treatment proposed is a promising approach to use as point-of-use treatment by isolated populations or when conventional systems and electricity fail due to natural disasters or war. Furthermore, the effective treatment obtained when the combined system was used with UV-A light sources indicates that the process may be a promising approach to guarantee water disinfection using natural sunlight.

The Effect of Protozoa Indigenous to Lakewater and Wastewater on Decay of Fecal Indicator Bacteria and Coliphage

Fecal indicator bacteria (FIB: Escherichia coli and enterococci) are used to assess recreational water quality. Viral indicators (i.e., somatic and F+ coliphage), could improve the prediction of viral pathogens in recreational waters, however, the impact of environmental factors, including the effect of predatory protozoa source, on their survival in water is poorly understood. We investigated the effect of lakewater or wastewater protozoa, on the decay (decreasing concentrations over time) of culturable FIB and coliphages under sunlight and shaded conditions. FIB decay was generally greater than the coliphages and was more rapid when indicators were exposed to lake vs. wastewater protozoa. F+ coliphage decay was the least affected by experimental variables. Somatic coliphage decayed fastest in the presence of wastewater protozoa and sunlight, though their decay under shaded conditions was-10-fold less than F+ after 14 days. The protozoa source consistently contributed significantly to the decay of FIB, and somatic, though not the F+ coliphage. Sunlight generally accelerated decay, and shade reduced somatic coliphage decay to the lowest level among all the indicators. Differential responses of FIB, somatic, and F+ coliphages to environmental factors support the need for studies that address the relationship between the decay of coliphages and viral pathogens under environmentally relevant conditions.

The performance evaluation of wastewater service: a protocol based on performance indicators applied to sewer systems and wastewater treatment plants

This research aimed to identify a tool to objectively analyse the performance and the environmental contextualisation of sewer systems (SwSs) and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). This procedure performs assessment by calculating performance indices which could be subsequently applied to SwSs and WWTPs with different characteristics. The proposed tool can be applied conveniently over the years by managers of integrated urban water management systems for the analysis of different realities also allowing the evaluation of the effects of upgrades carried out during the management phases. The proposed analysis allows the optimisation of SwSs and can profitably guide the choice and the priority among possible interventions for the sewerage infrastructure and WWTPs providing a verification and evaluation protocol as well as a financial planning tool.

A critical review on diverse technologies for advanced wastewater treatment during SARS-CoV-2 pandemic: What do we know?

Advanced wastewater treatment technologies are effective methods and currently attract growing attention, especially in arid and semi-arid areas, for reusing water, reducing water pollution, and explicitly declining, inactivating, or removing SARS-CoV-2. Overall, removing organic matter and micropollutants prior to wastewater reuse is critical, considering that water reclamation can help provide a crop irrigation system and domestic purified water. Advanced wastewater treatment processes are highly recommended for contaminants such as monovalent ions from an abiotic source and SARS-CoV-2 from an abiotic source. This work introduces the fundamental knowledge of various methods in advanced water treatment, including membranes, filtration, Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, ozonation, chlorination, advanced oxidation processes, activated carbon (AC), and algae. Following that, an analysis of each process for organic matter removal and mitigation or prevention of SARS-CoV-2 contamination is discussed. Next, a comprehensive overview of recent advances and breakthroughs is provided for each technology. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of each method are discussed.

How Should We Measure? A Review of Circular Cities Indicators

As the world continues to urbanize, it is necessary to identify and implement new urban development models and strategies in order to meet the challenges of sustainable development. As cities continue to face challenges in becoming fully circular, the need to establish a framework to measure the circular economy in urban areas grows. Many definitions for circular cities have been developed and addressed in recent years, as have numerous indicators. To make the transition to a circular city, we must integrate the findings and develop a general definition and measurement framework. This article aims at outlining a framework for circular cities indicators based on their key characteristics, as well providing directions for fostering circularity at the city level. To accomplish this goal, we conducted a systematic review and analyzed key papers published in the field of circular economy to determine how circular cities are measured. Choosing the right indicators to use for developing, monitoring, and evaluating circular cities is a difficult task for urban policymakers, managers, and planners. This highlights the significance of standardized frameworks for urban indicators. As a result, the authors propose a framework and highlight some key points about circular cities and smart urban metabolism.

The synergistic effect of peracetic acid activated by graphene oxide quantum dots in the inactivation of E. coli and organic dye removal with LED reactor light

This study presents a low-impact process that uses the synergy of peracetic acid (PAA) and graphene oxide quantum GQDs to degrade poorly biodegradable organic compounds and potentially substitute chlorination in wastewater treatment. The role of GQDs in GQDs/PAA activity and the effect of GQDs loading were examined. The results showed that increasing GQDs loading in the GQDs/PAA system greatly improved the photodegradation efficiency. Conversely, increasing the PAA concentration slightly enhanced efficiency due to few active sites being available. GQDs acted as catalysts and radical scavenging experiments confirmed that the degradation occurred via generation of hydroxyl (•OH) and peroxy (CH₃C(=O)OO•)) radicals. A probable degradation mechanism of the organic dye was presented based on the reaction by-products detected after HPLC-MS studies. The E. coli inactivation mechanism was elucidated by monitoring the morphological changes of E. coli using scanning microscopy. The proposed antimicrobial mechanism includes the initial diffusion of PAA through the cell membrane which caused damage and induced cellular matter leakage, resulting in cell death. Bacterial regrowth studies confirmed GQDs/PAA were able to bypass the natural mechanisms of microorganisms that enables them to repair any damages in their DNA.

Aspergillus niger Culture Filtrate (ACF) Mediated Biocontrol of Enteric Pathogens in Wastewater

Robust control of pathogens in sewage facilitates safe reuse of wastewater rich in valuable nutrients for potential valorization through biological means. Aspergillus niger is widely reported in bioremediation of wastewater but studies on control of enteric pathogens in sewage are very sparse. So, this study aimed at exploring the antibacterial and nematicidal activity of A. niger culture filtrate (ACF). Antibacterial activity of ACF on enteric pathogens (Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Vibrio cholerae, Salmonella enterica, Shigella dysenteriae, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella variicola) was determined by spectrophotometric growth analysis, resazurin based viability assay and biofilm formation assay. ACF showed inhibition against all enteric pathogens except Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Nematicidal studies on Caenorhabditis elegans showed 85% egg hatch inhibition and 52% mortality of L1 larvae. Sewage treatment with ACF at 1:1 (v/v) showed 2–3 log reduction in coliforms, Klebsiella, Shigella, Salmonella, S. aureus and Vibrio except Pseudomonas, indicating significant alteration of complex microbial dynamics in wastewater. Application of ACF can potentially be used as a robust biocontrol strategy against infectious microbes in wastewater and subsequent valorization by cultivating beneficial Pseudomonas.

Photoelectrocatalysis on TiO2 meshes: different applications in the integrated urban water management

Recently, among AOPs, photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) on TiO2 is gaining interest. In this study, five different real waters sampled in four different points of the integrated urban water management (IUWM) system were tested with PEC and UV alone, for comparison. This work aims to verify the effect of the PEC suggesting the optimal position in IUWM system where the PEC should be located to obtain the best performance. In groundwaters (GWs), PEC effectively removed atrazine-based compounds (> 99%), trichloroethylene, and perchloroethylene (96%), after 15 min of reaction time. However, given the low concentrations of emerging compounds, the synergistic effect of UV radiation with the catalyst and with the polarization of the mesh was not visible, with very few differences compared with the results obtained with UV alone. Pharmaceutical industrial wastewater (IWW) showed a significant increase in biodegradability after 2 h, both if subjected to PEC or UV (200%), despite the absence of COD removal. The PEC applied on IWW from a sewage sludge treatment plant allowed to effectively remove the COD (39.6%) and increase the biodegradability (300%). Good results in terms of COD removal (33.9%) and biodegradability increase (+900%) were also achieved testing PEC on wastewater treatment plant effluent. Except for GWs, PEC allowed significant EEO savings respect to UV alone (76.2-99.1%).

Advances in the Synthesis and Application of Anti-Fouling Membranes Using Two-Dimensional Nanomaterials

This article provides a comprehensive review of the recent progress in the application of advanced two-dimensional nanomaterials (2DNMs) in membranes fabrication and application for water purification. The membranes fouling, its types, and anti-fouling mechanisms of different 2DNMs containing membrane systems are also discussed. The developments in membrane synthesis and modification using 2DNMs, especially graphene and graphene family materials, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), MXenes, and others are critically reviewed. Further, the application potential of next-generation 2DNMs-based membranes in water/wastewater treatment systems is surveyed. Finally, the current problems and future opportunities of applying 2DNMs for anti-fouling membranes are also debated.

The Pathway towards Photoelectrocatalytic Water Disinfection: Review and Prospects of a Powerful Sustainable Tool

Photoelectrocatalysis is a hybrid photon/electron-driven process that benefits from the synergistic effects of both processes to enhance and stabilize the generation of disinfecting oxidants. Photoelectrocatalysis is an easy to operate technology that can be scaled-up or scaled-down for various water treatment applications as low-cost decentralized systems. This review article describes the fundamentals of photoelectrocatalysis, applied to water disinfection to ensure access to clean water for all as a sustainable development goal. Advances in reactor engineering design that integrate light-delivery and electrochemical system requirements are presented, with a description of photo-electrode material advances, including doping, nano-decoration, and nanostructure control. Disinfection and cell inactivation are described using different model microorganisms such as E. coli, Mycobacteria, Legionella, etc., as well the fungus Candida parapsilosis, with relevant figures of merit. The key advances in the elucidation of bacterial inactivation mechanisms by photoelectrocatalytic treatments are presented and knowledge gaps identified. Finally, prospects and further research needs are outlined, to define the pathway towards the future of photoelectrocatalytic disinfection technologies.

Simultaneous Disinfection and Organic Microcontaminant Removal by UVC-LED-Driven Advanced Oxidation Processes

This work presents the comparison of four advanced oxidation processes driven by UVC-LED radiation (278 nm—2 W/m2) for simultaneous bacteria inactivation (Escherichia coli—106 CFU/mL) and microcontaminant removal (imidacloprid—50 µg/L) in simulated wastewater secondary effluent. To this end, the activation of H2O2 and S2O82− as precursors of HO• and SO4•−, respectively, by UVC-LED and UVC-LED/Fe3+–NTA (ferric nitrilotriacetate at 0.1 mM) has been studied at different oxidant concentrations. For the purpose of comparison, conventional chlorination was used as the baseline along with bacterial regrowth 24 h after treatment. Disinfection was achieved within the first 30 min in all of the processes, mainly due to the bactericidal effect of UVC-LED radiation. UVC-LED/H2O2 did not substantially affect imidacloprid removal due to the low HO• generation by UVC irradiation at 278 nm, while more than 80% imidacloprid removal was achieved by the UVC-LED/S2O82−, UVC-LED/Fe3+–NTA/S2O82−, and UVC-LED/Fe3+–NTA/H2O2 processes. The most efficient concentration of both oxidants for the simultaneous disinfection and microcontaminant removal was 1.47 mM. Chlorination was the most effective treatment for bacterial inactivation without imidacloprid removal. These findings are relevant for scaling up UVC-LED photoreactors for tertiary wastewater treatment aimed at removing bacteria and microcontaminants.

Metoprolol and Its Degradation and Transformation Products Using AOPs-Assessment of Aquatic Ecotoxicity Using QSAR

Pharmaceuticals are found in waterbodies worldwide. Conventional sewage treatment plants are often not able to eliminate these micropollutants. Hence, Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) have been heavily investigated. Here, metoprolol is exposed to UV irradiation, hydrogen peroxide, and ozonation. Degradation was analyzed using chemical kinetics both for initial and secondary products. Photo-induced irradiation enhanced by hydrogen peroxide addition accelerated degradation more than ozonation, leading to complete elimination. Degradation and transformation products were identified by high-performance liquid-chromatography coupled to high-resolution higher-order mass spectrometry. The proposed structures allowed to apply Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR) analysis to predict ecotoxicity. Degradation products were generally associated with a lower ecotoxicological hazard to the aquatic environment according to OECD QSAR toolbox and VEGA. Comparison of potential structural isomers suggested forecasts may become more reliable with larger databases in the future.
