Factors Included in T1DM Continuing Education for Korean School Nurses: A Systematic Review

Challenges of distance learning encountering nursing students after the COVID-19 pandemic: a study from the Middle East

BACKGROUND

The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated an abrupt transition to online learning in nursing education, presenting unprecedented challenges. This research aims to comprehensively assess the challenges faced by nursing students during this transition, exploring key issues, recommending strategies, and analyzing their impact on student perceptions.

METHODS

Using a cross-sectional design, the study surveyed 941 nursing students across eight Arab countries-Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine, Oman, KSA, UAE, and Egypt-to ensure a representative sample and enhance external validity. Data collection involved a thorough survey covering academic, technological, and administrative challenges. Reliability analysis, descriptive statistics, and variance analysis using Kruskal -Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests were conducted to examine differences between countries and sociodemographic variables.

RESULTS

Descriptive statistics revealed significant demographic disparities. Single individuals in Jordan and those with lower family income in Palestine and Lebanon reported notably higher challenges. Female students in Iraq and Lebanon perceived greater challenges compared to males. Students pursuing diplomas in Jordan and bridging programs in Lebanon faced elevated difficulties. Governmental university students in Lebanon and private university students in Jordan encountered distinct challenges. Lack of available internet was particularly challenging in Jordan and Lebanon, whereas students using tablets in Lebanon and laptops in Palestine reported heightened challenges. Economic disparities, notably in family income, further hindered engagement with online learning materials. Across countries, academic challenges included managing coursework and accessing resources, exacerbated by administrative inefficiencies, especially in Palestine and Lebanon. Students in the UAE reported fewer challenges, facilitated by robust internet infrastructure and comprehensive institutional support.

CONCLUSION

This study provides critical insights into the challenges faced by nursing students during the Middle East's online learning transition. Key challenges encompass technological issues, academic workload, and administrative inefficiencies, with significant disparities across countries. The findings underscore the urgent need for targeted interventions, particularly in Palestine, to enhance online learning experiences. Policymakers and educational institutions can leverage these insights to advocate for student-centric approaches and policy development aimed at improving online learning across the region.

Perceived Benefits of Engaging in Continuing Professional Development among Nurses in Bontoc, Mountain Province

Background and Objective

Professionals in the Philippines must finish compulsory Continuing Professional Development (CPD) units before renewing their registration ID card with the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC). CPD has always been significant in the field of nursing. It supports nurses and other healthcare professionals, and keeps them informed about their professional development so they may provide the best care possible for patients. This study sought to engage how nurses in Bontoc, Mountain Province would benefit in continuing professional development in terms of their professional growth, increase in income, network building, and improvement of personal capabilities.

Methods

This study used a quantitative descriptive study design using simple random probability sampling method. Descriptive analysis was used to characterize study participants. A modified validated survey tool was used to collect data on the nurses' perceived CPD benefits. Data collection was done among 101 nurses employed in Bontoc General Hospital, Mountain Province State Polytechnic College, Bontoc Municipal Health Office, the Department of Education (DepEd) at Bontoc, from January to February 2022 through paper and pencil method. Nurses who did not consent to participate were excluded from the study. The UNP Ethics Review Committee reviewed the protocol and did not find any ethical inappropriateness with number 22-039. An F-test and a t-test were also conducted to determine the mean differences in perceived CPD benefits according to participants' demographic characteristics. All these statistical analysis steps were performed using the IBM Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20.

Results

The majority of the 101 respondents were between the ages of 30 and 39, and had 1 to 5 years of service. The overall mean of perceived CPD benefits was very high (3.40-3.58 mean rating), with career development having the highest mean rating at 3.58. This only implies that the respondents had a positive perception of CPD engagement, particularly with the favorable impact on their career development. T-test and F-test (ANOVA) were both pivotal in reaching the objectives of this study. Across the demographic characteristics of the respondents such as age, civil status, sex, highest educational attainment, length of service CPD units earned, and membership to organization, there was no significant difference found in the level of perceived benefits of engaging in continuing professional development across demographic characteristics. Each demographic factors gained a p-value greater than 0.05. Statistically, a p-value greater than 5% level of significance would result to failing to reject the null hypothesis.

Conclusion

Given the foregoing results, the number of credit units obtained can be used to forecast how CPD will help nurses grow in their careers. To reap significant advantages and increases in career mobility and income, as well as, to some extent, the development of professional networks and personal capacities, nurses should take advantage of expanding best practice involvement and pertinent CPD engagements. It has been discovered that CPD resources, activities, and programs have an impact on professional development. It is recommended that there be support from both the government and employers to promote CPD for nurses throughout their entire nursing careers. Earning CPD units can help nurses build their confidence and elevate their status in the workplace, increasing their chances of getting promoted.

Development and validation of the school healthcare partnership scale for school nurses

PURPOSE

This study was conducted to develop the School Healthcare Partnership Scale for School Nurses (SHCPS-S) for children with type 1 diabetes and to validate its psychometric properties.

METHODS

This was a methodological study. A total 342 school nurses in South Korea participated in the study; 171 were randomly assigned to each group for exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis. Data was collected from December 2021 to February 2022 via online survey. The Family Nursing Practice Scale was used to evaluate criterion validity, and the school nurse's professionalism scale and empathy were used to verify concurrent validity. Content validity review, response tests, and factor analysis were conducted.

RESULTS

A 50-items pool was created based on a hybrid concept analysis. Forty items were selected following the content validity review, using content validity index. A 20-item scale with four factors (trusting relationships, balanced responsibility, providing tailored care, and transparent and open communication) was chosen following exploratory factor analysis. Confirmatory factor analysis for the four factors showed an adequate model fit. The correlation coefficient with the family nursing practice and school nurse's professionalism scale were 0.642, 0.630, and 0.376. The Cronbach's α was 0.919, and the correlation coefficient was 0.768 in test-retest.

CONCLUSIONS

The SHCPS-S is a valid and reliable scale to measure school nurses' perceived collaborative relationships with parents for children with type 1 diabetes.

PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS

This scale can be used as a tool in interventional studies to enhance school healthcare partnerships.

Therapeutic Nursing Education in Promoting Self-Management of Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: Integrative Literature Review

Diabetes Mellitus Type I (DM1) is an autoimmune disease, characterized by the total destruction of the beta (β) cells of the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. This disease can strike people at any age, but it usually develops in children or young adults. Because of the high prevalence of DM1 in the young population, as well as all the difficulties in effective self-management in this population, with very specific characteristics, it is essential to develop therapeutic education interventions, with the aim of acquiring self-management skills. Thus, the main objective of this study is to identify the benefits of therapeutic nursing education interventions in promoting self-management of adolescents with DM1. For this, an Integrative Literature Review was carried out, using the EBSCOhost, PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science platforms. Six articles were eligible. In terms of results, benefits were identified in the health of adolescents, with the use of therapeutic education interventions by nurses, including the control of capillary glycemia, better acceptance of the pathology, improvement in body mass index, increased adherence to the therapeutic regime, a reduction in hospitalizations and complications, contribution to bio-psycho-social well-being and improvement quality of life.
