Using Social Media Mining and PLS-SEM to Examine the Causal Relationship between Public Environmental Concerns and Adaptation Strategies

Influences of Social-Psychological Constructs in Predicting Taiwanese Pro-Environmental Behaviors

A value-belief-norm (VBN) model for understanding the pro-environmental behaviors (PEB) of Taiwanese was developed. This formulated VBN model included personal values, openness to change, awareness of consequences, personal norms, social norms, and PEB. Ecological world view and ascription of responsibility were excluded to develop a tighter model. A total of 1079 completed questionnaires were collected and structural equation modelling was utilized, where standard estimates and coefficients of determination validated the formulated VBN model's effectiveness. Each construct served its role as the mediator between its distal variable and outcome variable, with a substantial level of predictive accuracy, and 74.3% of the variance in PEB was accounted for. Further findings found that mature individuals had a stronger tendency towards awareness of consequences due to personal values; the young had a stronger tendency towards personal norms due to awareness of consequences; men had a stronger tendency towards personal norms due to awareness of consequences; and women had a weaker tendency due to a greater emphasis on altruism. Future interventions, such as sharing of personal pro-environmental lifestyles verbally or through social media, periodically decluttering personal items and maintaining a minimalist lifestyle, where these personal norms are in line with collective social norms, could help to strengthen PEB.

Relationship chains of subhealth physical examination indicators: a cross-sectional study using the PLS-SEM approach

Subhealth is a transitional state between health and disease, and it can be detected through routine physical check-ups. However, the complexity and diversity of physical examination items and the difficulty of quantifying subhealth manifestations are the main problems that hinder its treatment. The aim of this study was to systematically investigate the physical examination performance of the subhealthy population and further explore the deeper relationships between indicators. Indicators were obtained for 878 subjects, including basic information, Western medicine indicators, inquiries of traditional Chinese medicine and sublingual vein (SV) characteristics. Statistical differences were analysed using R software. To explore the distribution of symptoms and symptom clusters in subhealth, partial least squares-structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) was applied to the subhealth physical examination index, and a structural model was developed to verify whether the relationship chain between the latent variables was reasonable. Finally, the reliability and validity of the PLS-SE model were assessed. The most common subclinical clinical symptoms were limb soreness (37.6%), fatigue (31.6%), shoulder and neck pain (30.5%) and dry eyes (29.2%). The redness of the SV in the subhealthy group was paler than that in the healthy group (p < 0.001). This study validates the establishment of the directed acyclic relationship chain in the subhealthy group: the path from routine blood tests to lipid metabolism (t = 7.878, p < 0.001), the path from lipid metabolism to obesity (t = 8.410, p < 0.001), the path from obesity to SV characteristics (t = 2.237, p = 0.025), and the path from liver function to SV characteristics (t = 2.215, p = 0.027). The innovative application of PLS-SEM to the study of subhealth has revealed the existence of a chain of relationships between physical examination indicators, which will provide a basis for further exploration of subhealth mechanisms and causal inference. This study has identified the typical symptoms of subhealth, and their early management will help to advance the treatment of diseases.

Consumers' Opinions towards Public Health Effects of Online Games: An Empirical Study Based on Social Media Comments in China

Online game products have fueled the boom in China's digital economy. Meanwhile, its public health concerns have sparked discussion among consumers on social media. However, past research has seldom studied the public health topics caused by online games from the perspective of consumer opinions. This paper attempts to identify consumers' opinions on the health impact of online game products through non-structured text and large-size social media comments. Thus, we designed a natural language processing (NLP) framework based on machine learning, which consists of topic mining, multi-label classification, and sentimental analysis. The hierarchical clustering method-based topic mining procedure determines the compatibility of this study and previous research. Every three topics are identified in "Personal Health Effects" and "Social Health Effects", respectively. Then, the multi-label classification model's results show that 61.62% of 327,505 comments have opinions about the health effects of online games. Topics "Adolescent Education" and "Commercial Morality" occupy the top two places of consumer attention. More than 31% of comments support two or more topics, and the "Adolescent Education" and "Commercial Morality" combination also have the highest co-occurrence. Finally, consumers expressed different emotional preferences for different topics, with an average of 63% of comments expressing negative emotions related to the health attributes of online games. In general, Chinese consumers are most concerned with adolescent education issues and hold the strongest negative emotion towards the commercial morality problems of enterprises. The significance of research results is that it reminds online game-related enterprises to pay attention to the potential harm to public health while bringing about additional profits through online game products. Furthermore, negative consumer emotions may cause damage to brand image, business reputation, and the sustainable development of the enterprises themselves. It also provides the government supervision departments with an advanced analysis method reference for more effective administration to protect public health and promote the development of the digital economy.

A Novel Framework for Mining Social Media Data Based on Text Mining, Topic Modeling, Random Forest, and DANP Methods

The huge volume of user-generated data on social media is the result of the aggregation of users’ personal backgrounds, past experiences, and daily activities. This huge size of the generated data, the so-called “big data,” has been studied and investigated intensively during the past few years. In spite of the impression one may get from the media, a great deal of data processing has not been uncovered by existing techniques of data engineering and processing. However, very few scholars have tried to do so, especially from the perspective of multiple-criteria decision-making (MCDM). These MCDM methods can derive influence relationships and weights associated with aspects and criteria, which can hardly be achieved by traditional data analytics and statistical approaches. Therefore, in this paper, we aim to propose an analytic framework to mine social networks, feed the meaningful information via MCDM methods based on a theoretical framework, derive causal relationships among the aspects of the theoretical framework, and finally compare the causal relationships with a social theory. Latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) will be adopted to derive topic models based on the data retrieved from social media. By clustering the topics into aspects of the social theory, the probability associated with each aspect will be normalized and then transformed to a Likert-type 5-point scale. Afterwards, for every topic, the feature importance of all other topics will be derived using the random forest (RF) algorithm. The feature importance matrix will be transformed to the initial influence matrix of the decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL). The influence relationships among the aspects and criteria and influence weights can then be derived by using the DEMATEL-based analytic network process (DANP). The influence weight versus each criterion can be derived by using DANP. To verify the feasibility of the proposed framework, Taiwanese users’ attitudes toward air pollution will be analyzed based on the value–belief–norm (VBN) theory by using social media data retrieved from Dcard (dcard.tw). Based on the analytic results, the causal relationships are fully consistent with the VBN framework. Further, the mutual influences derived in this work that were seldom discussed by earlier works, i.e., the mutual influences between altruistic concerns and egoistic concerns, as well as those between altruistic concerns and biosphere concerns, are worth further investigation in future.
