Abstract
During the COVID-19 pandemic, clinical nurses in hospitals in South Korea were exposed to extreme stress, and many continue to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This study explores the factors influencing PTSD among hospital clinical nurses during COVID-19. In total, 121 hospital clinical nurses participated in 2022, providing demographic information and completing surveys designed to measure PTSD, resilience, social support, professional pride in nursing (PPN), and variables related to COVID-19. We observed statistically significantly higher levels of resilience (91.48 vs. 70.00), social support (47.37 vs. 35.41), and PPN (88.36 vs. 68.06) in the low-risk PTSD group compared with the high-risk PTSD group. Resilience was associated with a reduced risk of PTSD (OR, 0.91; 95% CI = 0.84-0.98). The subfactors of control (OR = 0.60; 95% CI = 0.43-0.86) and sociability (OR = 0.68; 95% CI = 0.44-0.97) decreased PTSD risk. Among the social support subfactors, family support had an OR of 0.47 (95% CI = 0.26-0.86) for reducing PTSD risk. Programs involving family participation that enhance resilience and provide psychological support can help hospital nurses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic manage their PTSD. Our findings serve as foundational data to develop interventions on psychological well-being for nurses dealing with new infectious diseases.

Abstract
AIM This study aimed to investigate the relationships among occupational stress, recovery experience and turnover intention among nurses caring for patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). BACKGROUND The high turnover intention among nurses affect patient safety quality of patient care. DESIGN The cross-sectional study design was used. This study was guided by STROBE. METHODS Convenience sampling identified 202 registered nurses working in the COVID-19 wards of three tertiary general hospitals in two cities in South Korea. The collected data were analysed using SPSS version 26.0, and the PROCESS macro in SPSS was employed to estimate path coefficients and assess the adequacy of the model. The moderating effects of recovery experience on the pathway in which occupational stress of the participants affects turnover intention were verified using model 1 of the SPSS PROCESS macro proposed by Hayes. RESULTS The recovery experience did not significantly mediate the relationship between occupational stress and turnover intention. However, it had significant moderating effect on the relationship between occupational stress and turnover intention (β = .005, 95% CI [.001, .010]). The effect of occupational stress on turnover intention was dependent on recovery experience. CONCLUSION The results revealed that occupational stress among nurses caring for patients with COVID-19 affect the turnover intention and the level of recovery experience moderates this relationship. Thus, not only during the COVID-19 pandemic but also during challenging times of various infectious disease outbreaks, hospitals can enhance the health and well-being of nurses and promote the retention of nursing staff. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION During the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses have been exposed to understaffing and overwhelming workloads. However, policies for nurses' welfare and benefits are still insufficient, even as the pandemic comes to an end. The results of this study indicate that sufficient rest and appropriate nursing personnel are of utmost importance to nurses. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION No patient or public contribution.

Abstract
AIM To examine night working conditions by shift work type and identify the effects of night working conditions on nurses' perceptions of shift work safety and health effects. BACKGROUND Night work is the main factor affecting nurses' health. However, the safety of night working conditions has not been sufficiently examined in previous studies. METHODS This study used a cross-sectional research design and an online survey using a tool released by the Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union, and the responses of 348 shift work nurses in Korea were analyzed. Logistic regression analysis was used to examine the effects of shift work conditions on the perceived safety of night work and health effects. The STROBE reporting guidelines were utilized, and data were collected from December 1 to December 31, 2021. RESULTS The adjusted logistic regression analysis showed that perceived threat to safety and the health effects of shift work were not significant according to shift type. However, night-shift-work nurses who worked alone (P = 0.003), lacked an emergency recovery system (P = 0.026), and had difficulty commuting perceived a threat to their health (P = 0.007). Additionally, nurses who experienced loss of concentration (P = 0.006) and inadequate rest time (P < 0.001) perceived the health effects of shift work. DISCUSSION Urgent monitoring of night work conditions is necessary for the 2-shift work type. Nurses must work night shifts together and an emergency system should be established for their safety. CONCLUSION Night work conditions should be improved to prevent the hazards of night work and its negative health effects on nurses. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING AND HEALTH POLICY This study suggests the necessity of a policy to enhance night work safety, including emergency coping systems and sufficient inter-shift rest time.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Shift work is inevitable for nurses in intensive care units. Various studies explored nurses' fatigue in multiple hospital wards. However, few studies focused on fatigue among nurses in intensive care units. AIMS To determine the association between shift work schedules, compensatory sleep, work-family conflict, and fatigue of shift-working nurses in critical care units. STUDY DESIGN A descriptive cross-sectional multi-center study was conducted in March 2022 among intensive care nurses from five hospitals. METHODS Data were collected by online survey, including self-designed demographic questions, the Fatigue Scale-14, the Chinese adult daytime sleepiness scale, and the work-family scale. Pearson correlation was conducted for bivariate analysis. Independent-sample t-test, one-way ANOVA, and multiple linear regression analysis were performed to examine fatigue-related variables. RESULTS A total of 326 nurses responded to the survey with an effective response rate of 74.9%. The mean scores of physical fatigue and mental fatigue were 6.80 and 3.72, respectively. The bivariate analyses showed that work-family conflict was positively correlated with physical (r = 0.483, p < .001) and mental fatigue (r = 0.406, p < .001). Multiple linear regression results showed that work-family conflict, daytime sleepiness, and shift system were statistically significant factors influencing physical fatigue (F = 41.793, p < .001). Work-family conflict, sleep duration after the night shift, and daytime sleepiness were the main influencing factors of mental fatigue (F = 25.105, p < .001). CONCLUSIONS Nurses with higher work-family conflict, daytime sleepiness, and working 12-h shifts have higher levels of physical fatigue. Higher work-family conflict, shorter sleep duration after night shifts, and daytime sleepiness are associated with higher mental fatigue among intensive care nurses. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Nursing managers and nurses should consider work-family factors and compensatory sleep in their efforts to reduce fatigue. It is necessary to strengthen work-supporting strategies and compensatory sleep guidance for nurses to promote fatigue recovery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Medication administration errors (MAEs) cause preventable patient harm and cost billions of dollars from already-strained healthcare budgets. An emerging factor contributing to these errors is nurse fatigue. Given medication administration is the most frequent clinical task nurses undertake; it is vital to understand how fatigue impacts MAEs. OBJECTIVE Examine the evidence on the effect of fatigue on MAEs and near misses by registered nurses working in hospital settings. METHOD Arksey and O'Malley's scoping review framework was used to guide this review and PAGER framework for data extraction and analysis. The PRISMA checklist was completed. Four electronic databases were searched: CINAHL, PubMed, Scopus and PsycINFO. Eligibility criteria included primary peer review papers published in English Language with no date/time limiters applied. The search was completed in August 2021 and focussed on articles that included: (a) registered nurses in hospital settings, (b) MAEs, (c) measures of sleep, hours of work, or fatigue. RESULTS Thirty-eight studies were included in the review. 82% of the studies identified fatigue to be a contributing factor in MAEs and near misses (NMs). Fatigue is associated with reduced cognitive performance and lack of attention and vigilance. It is associated with poor nursing performance and decreased patient safety. Components of shift work, such as disruption to the circadian rhythm and overtime work, were identified as contributing factors. However, there was marked heterogeneity in strategies for measuring fatigue within the included studies. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Fatigue is a multidimensional concept that has the capacity to impact nurses' performance when engaged in medication administration. Nurses are susceptible to fatigue due to work characteristics such as nightwork, overtime and the requirement to perform cognitively demanding tasks. The mixed results found within this review indicate that larger scale studies are needed with particular emphasis on the impact of overtime work. Policy around safe working hours need to be re-evaluated and fatigue management systems put in place to ensure delivery of safe and quality patient care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The incessant and stressful nature of providing care to patients with chronic diseases can cause fatigue in caregivers. Caregivers' fatigue and reduced quality of life can reduce the patient's quality of care. Since it is important to pay attention to the mental health of family caregivers, this study investigated the relationship between fatigue and quality of life and their related factors in family caregivers of patients on hemodialysis. METHODS This cross-sectional descriptive-analytical study was performed in 2020-2021. One hundred seventy family caregivers were recruited by convenience sampling from two hemodialysis referral centers in the east of Mazandaran province, Iran. The data collection tools were the Family Caregiver Quality of Life questionnaire and Krupp's fatigue severity scale. RESULTS The majority (88%) of caregivers had moderate to severe fatigue. Caregivers' fatigue was a major factor influencing their quality of life. There was a significant fatigue difference between some categories of kinship and the caregiver's income level (P < 0.05). Caregivers with lower income and education levels, those who were the patient's spouse, and those who could not leave the patient alone had significantly worse quality of life than other caregivers (P < 0.05). Also, caregivers living with the patient in the same house had a worse quality of life than those living separately (P = 0.05). CONCLUSION Considering the high prevalence of fatigue among family caregivers of patients on hemodialysis and its adverse effect on their quality of life, it is recommended to perform routine screenings and implement fatigue alleviation interventions for these caregivers.

Abstract
Research has shown that shiftworkers experience poor sleep and high levels of fatigue. Although considerable research has been performed on fatigue within many shift-work occupations, very little has been done with emergency physicians (EPs). This qualitative study was conducted with the goal of gaining insight into EPs' perceptions of fatigue at work. Twenty EPs from an academic medical center participated in virtual interviews, with nine open-ended questions asked in a semi-structured interview format. Twelve common topics with four main themes emerged from the interviews. Three of these common themes included sources of fatigue (including both work- and home-related sources), consequences of fatigue (including impacts on individuals and performance), and prevention and mitigation strategies to cope with fatigue. The fourth main theme was the belief in the inevitability of fatigue due to high cognitive load, emotionally taxing work experiences, work unpredictability, and the 24/7 shift-work nature of emergency medicine. EPs' experiences with fatigue are consistent with but extend those of other types of shiftworkers. Our findings suggest that EPs tend to incorporate the inevitability of fatigue at work into their identity as EPs and experience a sense of learned helplessness as a result, suggesting areas for future interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Extended work hours and shift work can result in mistimed sleep, excessive sleepiness, and fatigue, which affects concentration and cognition. Impaired concentration and cognition negatively affect employee safety. OBJECTIVE To examine the evidence of the impact of shift work organization, specifically work hours and scheduling, on nurse injuries including needlestick and sharps injuries, drowsy driving and motor vehicle crashes, and work-related accidents causing a near miss or actual injury to the nurse. METHODS A scoping review was conducted using search results from five bibliographic databases. RESULTS Through database searching, 7788 articles were identified. During the title and abstract screening, 5475 articles were excluded. Full text screening eliminated 1971 articles. During the data extraction phase, 206 articles were excluded leaving 34 articles from 14 countries in the scoping review. The results of the review suggest a strong association in nurses between long work hours and overtime and an increased risk for needlestick and sharps injuries, drowsy driving and motor vehicle crashes, and other work-related accidents. Rotating shifts increase the risk for needlestick and sharps injuries and other work-related accidents while night and rotating shifts increase the risk for drowsy driving and motor vehicle crashes. CONCLUSIONS Proper management of work hours and scheduling is essential to maximize recovery time and reduce or prevent nurse injuries. Nurse leaders, administrators, and managers, have a responsibility to create a culture of safety. This begins with safe scheduling practices, closely monitoring for near miss and actual nurse injuries, and implementing evidence-based practice strategies to reduce these occurrences.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A scientific understanding of the relationships between intensive care unit nurses' well-being and patient safety will allow nurse managers, administrators, and policymakers to simultaneously manage crucial organisational goals of nurses' health and patient safety. Understanding predictors of fatigue among intensive care unit nurses may help to balance personal and organisational impacts (e.g., turnover intention, sick leave) and provide a way to positively influence their safety perception. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to explore the association between work fatigue and perception of patient safety among nurses working in critical care units and determine whether their quality of life levels mediated this relationship. METHODS This study used a cross-sectional correlational comparative design. Participants were a sample of 250 intensive care unit nurses recruited conveniently from three large hospitals in the United Arab Emirates. The self-reported questionnaire included the Nursing Quality of Life Scale, the Fatigue Severity Scale, and the Safety Attitudes Questionnaire (SAQ)-ICU version, as well as sociodemographic characteristics and work-related information. RESULTS Of the 250 participating nurses, 76.8 % reported low QoL. There was a statistically significant correlation between nurses' Quality of Life and fatigue levels (r = 0.234, P = 0.000). Overall, 52.8 % of the sample had high fatigue and 49.6 % had poor safety perception. Multiple regression analysis using the Baron and Kenny approach showed that QoL, marital status, gender, and work environment were predictors of nurses' perception of safety. CONCLUSION Intensive care unit nurses had high levels of fatigue and poor Quality of Life. High Quality of Life and a favourable work environment were independent predictors of good patient safety perception. Efforts should be directed to maximize staffing resources that positively impact patient safety. These findings are comparable with international studies, suggesting that these issues may be ubiquitous. IMPLICATIONS FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE Intensive care practitioners, managers and policymakers should adopt measures to modify intensive care nurses' exhausting working conditions and provide a supportive environment. these interventions might improve nurses' perception of patient safety and consequently prevent safety incidents.

Abstract
Fatigue is a common symptom experienced by nurses before the pandemic, but this experience is heightened by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The literature has ample evidence of nurses experiencing occupational or work-related fatigue. In addition, human error is a significant consequence of fatigue that can significantly impact patient outcomes and be devastating for a nurse. Guided by Lazarus and Folkman's Transactional Theory of Stress and Coping, we conducted a descriptive, correlational and cross-sectional study aimed to 1) explore the level of occupational fatigue and sleep quality among Filipino nurses working during the COVID-19; 2) determine the relationships between occupational fatigue, sleep quality, and subjective wellbeing among Filipino nurses working during COVID-19 pandemic. One hundred twenty-six Filipino nurses across the United States working during the pandemic were surveyed using RedCap. The study showed that Filipino nurses had moderate to high acute and chronic fatigue levels, lower intershift recovery, and good sleep quality. Evidence and opportunities for health care administrations to create strategies to enhance the wellbeing of their largest and most valuable workforce.
