Exploring a Complementary Stress Management and Wellbeing Intervention Model for Teachers: Participant Experience

Prevalence of stress and its relevance on psychological well-being of the teaching profession: A scoping review

Background

Well-being among teachers contributes toward quality work and better student support. Teachers' well-being persists to be a concern in school settings; there is a lacuna in understanding the concept of well-being among them. This scoping review identifies the stress factors and map their association with the psychological well-being of teachers employed in schools. Additionally, to identify the methodology and the interventions used in reducing teachers' stress and their relevance on their psychological well-being.

Methods

First, Pubmed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases were searched for eligible studies with MeSH terms for stress factors, well-being, and teachers from 2010 to 2022. Identified studies were screened thoroughly and excluded or included based on prior established criteria. Data from the included studies were extracted and summarized according to the study protocol.

Results

Among the 60 studies that met our inclusion criteria, the majority were quantitative, with cross-sectional studies. Several studies focused on emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and diminished personal accomplishment aspect among teachers. Almost half of the included studies focused on organizational and social pressures such as administration workload, classroom management issues, lack of supervisor and team support, students' behaviour, and pressure from parents. The most used interventions to overcome stress were coping strategies and mindfulness training intervention tools.

Conclusions

The findings from the current scoping review will reveal the different stressors which impact psychological well-being. Focus on the most used interventions to overcome stress among schoolteachers. This will also provide recommendations to regulators and management to identify the factors causing stress among teachers and their relevance to their psychological well-being, overcome employee turnover and absenteeism issues. Also, different alternatives available to reduce the stress may benefit the stakeholders and policymakers to confirm a suitable intervention that will benefit the teaching profession.

Changes in psychological distress among Polish medical university teachers during the COVID-19 pandemic

Our study aims to update knowledge about psychological distress and its changes in the Polish group of academic medical teachers after two years of a global pandemic. During the coronavirus disease, teachers were challenged to rapidly transition into remote teaching and adapt new assessment and evaluation systems for students, which might have been a completely novel situation that was not addressed before, especially in medical universities in Poland. We conducted a cross-sectional study at Poznan University of Medical Sciences from March to April 2022. The questionnaire included self-reported information on anxiety, stress, and depression. We found that post-pandemic levels of anxiety, stress, and depression have significantly (p<0.001) improved compared to initial levels at the beginning of coronavirus disease. In multivariate models, females had higher odds of improving levels of anxiety (OR  =  0.46; 95% CI  =  -1.58-(-0.03); p  =  0.04), stress (OR  =  0.36; 95% CI  =  -1.83-(-0.22); p  =  0.01), and depression (OR  =  0.0.37; 95% CI  =  -1.58-(-0.12); p  =  0.03). Anxiety, stress, or depression were not significantly associated with years of experience, the number of taught subjects, and weekly teaching hours, but only with the academic work during COVID-19 (Spearman ranxiety = 0.37, rstress = 0.32, rdepression = 0.37, p<0.001). For the virtual learning concerns, 79% of teachers reported that students might engage less; and it was correlated with higher weekly teaching hours (r = 0.19, p<0.05). Even though only 29.8% reported cheating as a concern, it was correlated with a higher number of taught subjects (r = 0.2, p<0.05). Levels of anxiety, stress, and depression have improved as time passed, not affecting teachers' academic performance. Concerns about virtual learning have been raised, suggesting it may be conjoined with classroom learning but not as an alternative. Universities should highlight the importance of seeking psychological support and provide essential programs to employees. Teachers' coping skills with psychological distress should be further studied.

Perspectives and Factors Affecting the Preventive Behavior Pertinent to COVID-19 among School Employees in Chiang Mai, Thailand: A Cross-Sectional Study

The school is one of the most challenging environments for management to prevent the spread of COVID-19 infection. School employees play important roles as the main practitioners of recommended preventive measures. Consistent application of preventive measures by school employees strengthens the school’s readiness to reopen for on-site education. The study objectives are (1) to assess school employee agreement and actions in accordance with the preventive measures and recommendations for COVID-19 prevention and control, (2) to assess the readiness of the school and employees for on-site education, and (3) to determine factors associated with consistent performance of these measures. A cross-sectional study was conducted via an online survey from 5 November 2021 to 25 January 2022. Self-reported online questionnaires were used to collect school employees’ data. The readiness of schools for on-site education was assessed using 44 indicators from the practical guidelines by the Thai Department of Health. Of the 402 study participants, the majority of participants had agreed to all measures and recommendations for COVID-19 prevention and control in school. High levels of concern and disagreement in school re-opening (aOR 3.78, 95%CI 1.04 to 13.70; p = 0.043) were associated with higher consistent performance of the measures and recommendations for COVID-19 prevention and control in schools. Male teachers (aOR 0.43, 95%CI 0.23 to 0.80; p = 0.008) and any disagreement with these measures and recommendations (aOR 0.03, 95%CI 0.01 to 0.23; p < 0.001) were associated with lower consistent performance. Our study findings can inform the stakeholders to decide on the re-opening and supportive strategies. School employees, especially in male employees, must be supported from the relevant sectors to decrease disagreement to the measures and enhance awareness of the pandemic situation before the school re-opening.
