Abstract
OBJECTIVES to assess the survival rates of removable partial dentures (RPDs) and identify factors impacting their longevity. METHODS electronic health records were retrieved of patients aged ≥18 who received RPDs between 2010 - 2021 with a follow-up of ≥ three months. Data extracted included demographics, medical history, dental charting, periodontal screening and recording scores, prostheses details and related interventions, including new dentures/denture remakes, and maintenance. Multivariate Mixed-Effect Cox regression was performed to identify potential RPD survival risk factors. Reduced model selection was reached using a backward step-down by comparing the performance of these multivariable models using the ANOVA test. RESULTS 1893 RPDs from 1246 patients were included, with a median follow-up of 21.8 months (range from 3 to 131.3 months). Three hundred and twelve patients received a maxillary RPD, 460 received a mandibular RPD, and the remaining 474 patients received both maxillary and mandibular RPDs. Metal-based RPDs had a median survival of 73 months (95%CI: 70 - 82) versus 45 months (95% CI: 37-67) for acrylic ones. Multivariable mixed effects Cox model showed that the lifespans of RPDs were longer amongst patients receiving more maintenance care within three months [Hazards Ratio (HR)=0.89 (0.83, 0.96)] and after three months [HR=0.53 (0.46, 0.61)] of denture delivery, patients wearing both maxillary and mandibular RPDs [HR=0.67 (0.52, 0.87)], and patients receiving metal-based RPDs [HR=0.31 (0.23, 0.42)]. CONCLUSIONS Metal-based dentures, dual arch restoration, and increased maintenance positively impact the survival of RPDs. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Adapting consent and warranty practices is advised to reflect RPD performance variations.

Abstract
AIM Emerging evidence suggests association of tooth loss with impaired cognition. However, the differential effects of anterior versus posterior tooth loss, occlusal support loss and chewing ability are not considered comprehensively. MATERIALS AND METHODS We conducted cross-sectional (N = 4036) and longitudinal analyses (N = 2787) on data from Health 2000 and 2011 Surveys for associations of posterior occlusal support loss, anterior versus posterior tooth loss, and chewing ability with baseline cognition and 11-year cognitive decline. Additionally, 15-year incident dementia risk was investigated (N = 4073). RESULTS After considering relevant confounders and potential reverse causality bias, posterior occlusal support loss significantly increased dementia risk across all categories indicative of posterior occlusal support loss (hazard ratios [HRs] between 1.99 and 2.89). Bilateral inadequate posterior occlusal support was associated with 11-year decline in overall cognition (odds ratio [OR] = 1.48:1.00-2.19), and unilateral inadequate posterior occlusal support with total immediate (OR = 1.62:1.14-2.30) and delayed recall decline (OR = 1.45:1.03-2.05). Moreover, posterior tooth loss was associated with dementia (HR = 2.23:1.27-3.91) and chewing ability with total immediate decline (OR = 1.80:1.04-3.13). CONCLUSIONS Posterior tooth and occlusal support loss significantly increases dementia risk. The impact of posterior occlusal support loss appears to be dose-dependent, and this effect is distinct from that of dentures. Dental healthcare services should be particularly attentive to the state of posterior dentition. Further studies exploring possible mechanisms are warranted.

Abstract
Aim To investigate the impact of the curve of Spee (CS) accentuation on bite force, chewing ability, and additionally, other factors that influence chewing ability and bite force such as restorations, caries, gender, habits, and TMJ problems. Materials and Methods 231 participants (118 male and 113 female, mean age = ±27.96 years) were recruited for this cross-section study. Participants completed a data collection sheet in which age, gender, Angle's classification of malocclusion, overjet, overbite, TMJ problems, habits, restorations, and caries experience were recorded. Two examiners made a lower impression, chewing ability test and measured the bite force for each participant. Measurement of the CS was obtained digitally from the poured dental cast, and the categorization was as follows: flat (<1 mm), normal (1-2 mm), or deep (>2 mm). Results The mean maximum bite force (MBF) was 468.722 N for participants with flat CS, 389.822 N for normal CS, 647.08 N for deep CS, and 384.667 N for reverse CS. The average MBF was higher for participants with deep CS (p < 0.05). MBF force was higher in males. However, BMI was not significantly related to MBF values. Participants with normal and flat CS have comparable chewing capacity (p > 0.05). Also, a significant difference in bite force and chewing ability was found between the three categories of CS (p < 0.05). Conclusion Bite force variations across various CS types were linked to gender and habits. Chewing ability showed no differences concerning gender, habits, TMJ problems, caries, or restorations, emphasizing CS's significant impact on bite force while showcasing the unchanged nature of chewing ability amidst diverse factors.

Abstract
This study aimed to clarify whether physical constitution affects masticatory function. A total of 251 healthy adults with completely natural dentition participated in this study. Height, weight, and body mass index (BMI) were used as parameters representing physical constitution, and the amount of glucose eluted from chewed gummy jelly and maximum occlusal force was used as parameter representing masticatory function. Handgrip strength was also measured. After comparing each parameter between male and female participants, the relationship between physical constitution and masticatory function was investigated in the combined (male and female) group, the male group, and the female group. The relationship between handgrip strength and masticatory function was also investigated. Stepwise multiple linear regression analysis was performed with masticatory function as the dependent variable and physical constitution as independent variable. The mean values of each parameter were significantly greater in the male group than in the female group. Regarding the relationship between physical constitution and occlusal force, the occlusal force tended to increase as the parameter value representing physical constitution increased, and a significant correlation was observed for all parameters. For masticatory performance, a significant correlation was observed in all parameters in the combined group, but no significant correlations were observed in the male group and in the female group. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that weight was significantly associated with occlusal force. Though occlusal force may be affected by physical constitution, masticatory performance is not easily affected by physical constitution.

Abstract
Even before considering their introduction into the mouth, the choice of materials for the optimization of the prosthesis depends on specific parameters such as their biocompatibility, solidity, resistance, and longevity. In the first part of this two-part review, we approach the various mechanical characteristics that affect this choice, which are closely related to the manufacturing process. Among the materials currently available, it is mainly polymers that are suitable for this use in this field. Historically, the most widely used polymer has been polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), but more recently, polyamides (nylon) and polyether ether ketone (PEEK) have provided interesting advantages. The incorporation of certain molecules into these polymers will lead to modifications aimed at improving the mechanical properties of the prosthetic bases. In the second part of the review, the safety aspects of prostheses in the oral ecosystem (fragility of the undercuts of soft/hard tissues, neutral pH of saliva, and stability of the microbiota) are addressed. The microbial colonization of the prosthesis, in relation to the composition of the material used and its surface conditions (roughness, hydrophilicity), is of primary importance. Whatever the material and manufacturing process chosen, the coating or finishes dependent on the surface condition remain essential (polishing, non-stick coating) for limiting microbial colonization. The objective of this narrative review is to compile an inventory of the mechanical and physical properties as well as the clinical conditions likely to guide the choice between polymers for the base of removable prostheses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have shown a longitudinal association between tooth loss and cognitive function. Body mass index (BMI) is an essential applicable indicator of health status screening. However, the underlying mechanism among these factors remains unclear. This study aimed to determine the mediating role of BMI in the tooth loss-cognition relationship by gender among Chinese middle-aged and older adults. METHODS This is a prospective and cohort study. We used three waves of follow-up data (2011, 2013, and 2015) from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Survey, including 10,013 participants aged 45 years or above. Cognitive function was evaluated by Telephone Interview of Cognitive Status, words recall, and figure drawing. The cross-lagged panel model was applied to test the hypothesized model. RESULTS Tooth loss is associated with higher BMI and lower level of cognitive function. We found significant total effects (B = -0.017, P = 0.008), direct effect (B = -0.015, P = 0.022) and indirect effects (B = -0.002, P = 0.010) of tooth loss on cognition mediated through BMI only among middle-aged and older men. For middle-aged and older women, the total effect (B = -0.010, P = 0.125) and direct effect (B = -0.007, P = 0.249) were no more significant. CONCLUSIONS The longitudinal association between tooth loss and cognition was primarily indirect through BMI among middle-aged Chinese males but not women. Public health authorities should remind middle-aged and older males with tooth loss and high BMI to participate in timely medical checkups for improving cognition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND CONTEXT Dental implants are designed to replace a missing tooth. Implant stability is vital to achieving osseointegration and successful implantation. Although there are many implants available on the market, there is room for improvement. PURPOSE We describe a new dental implant with improved primary stability features. STUDY DESIGN Lab bench test studies. METHODS We evaluated the new implant using static and flexion-compression fatigue tests with compression loads, 35 Ncm tightening torque, displacement control, 0.01 mm/s actuator movement speed, and 9-10 Hz load application frequency, obtaining a cyclic load diagram. We applied variable cyclic loadings of predetermined amplitude and recorded the number of cycles until failure. The test ended with implant failure (breakage or permanent deformation) or reaching five million cycles for each load. RESULTS Mean stiffness was 1151.13 ± 133.62 SD N/mm, mean elastic limit force 463.94 ± 75.03 SD N, and displacement 0.52 ± 0.04 SD mm, at failure force 663.21 ± 54.23 SD N and displacement 1.56 ± 0.18 SD mm, fatigue load limit 132.6 ± 10.4 N, and maximum bending moment 729.3 ± 69.43 mm/N. CONCLUSIONS The implant fatigue limit is satisfactory for incisor and canine teeth and between the values for premolars and molars for healthy patients. The system exceeds five million cycles when subjected to a 132.60 N load, ensuring long-lasting life against loads below the fatigue limit.
