Relationships of physical constitution with occlusal force and masticatory performance in adults with natural dentition

This study aimed to clarify whether physical constitution affects masticatory function. A total of 251 healthy adults with completely natural dentition participated in this study. Height, weight, and body mass index (BMI) were used as parameters representing physical constitution, and the amount of glucose eluted from chewed gummy jelly and maximum occlusal force was used as parameter representing masticatory function. Handgrip strength was also measured. After comparing each parameter between male and female participants, the relationship between physical constitution and masticatory function was investigated in the combined (male and female) group, the male group, and the female group. The relationship between handgrip strength and masticatory function was also investigated. Stepwise multiple linear regression analysis was performed with masticatory function as the dependent variable and physical constitution as independent variable. The mean values of each parameter were significantly greater in the male group than in the female group. Regarding the relationship between physical constitution and occlusal force, the occlusal force tended to increase as the parameter value representing physical constitution increased, and a significant correlation was observed for all parameters. For masticatory performance, a significant correlation was observed in all parameters in the combined group, but no significant correlations were observed in the male group and in the female group. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that weight was significantly associated with occlusal force. Though occlusal force may be affected by physical constitution, masticatory performance is not easily affected by physical constitution.

Modularising ontology and designing inference patterns to personalise health condition assessment: the case of obesity

BACKGROUND

The public health initiatives for obesity prevention are increasingly exploiting the advantages of smart technologies that can register various kinds of data related to physical, physiological, and behavioural conditions. Since individual features and habits vary among people, the design of appropriate intervention strategies for motivating changes in behavioural patterns towards a healthy lifestyle requires the interpretation and integration of collected information, while considering individual profiles in a personalised manner. The ontology-based modelling is recognised as a promising approach in facing the interoperability and integration of heterogeneous information related to characterisation of personal profiles.

RESULTS

The presented ontology captures individual profiles across several obesity-related knowledge-domains structured into dedicated modules in order to support inference about health condition, physical features, behavioural habits associated with a person, and relevant changes over time. The modularisation strategy is designed to facilitate ontology development, maintenance, and reuse. The domain-specific modules formalised in the Web Ontology Language (OWL) integrate the domain-specific sets of rules formalised in the Semantic Web Rule Language (SWRL). The inference rules follow a modelling pattern designed to support personalised assessment of health condition as age- and gender-specific. The test cases exemplify a personalised assessment of the obesity-related health conditions for the population of teenagers.

CONCLUSION

The paper addresses several issues concerning the modelling of normative concepts related to obesity and depicts how the public health concern impacts classification of teenagers according to their phenotypes. The modelling choices regarding the ontology-structure are explained in the context of the modelling goal to integrate multiple knowledge-domains and support reasoning about the individual changes over time. The presented modularisation pattern enhances reusability of the domain-specific modules across various health care domains.

Treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection by Chinese medicine: what we can learn from the physical constitution theory?

The widespread use of antibiotics has been linked to the development of resistance to antibiotics, bacterial variation and re-infection in the treatment of Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori) infection. Treatment of H.pylori infection by Chinese medicine possesses some advantages but has a low eradication rate. The research on the physical constitution provides us some new ideas. Spleen and Stomach are the foundation of physical constitution. H.pylori infection is closely related to the physical constitution of patients, and the physical constitution determines the development, syndrome transformation and prognosis of H.pylori infection. Treatment of H.pylori infection should not be limited to "eradication" or "killing bacteria once it was detected". Due to the adjustability of the physical constitution, H.pylori infection can be treated by enhancing vital Qi and dispelling evil on the basis of syndrome differentiation, disease differentiation and constitution differentiation.
