Abstract
BACKGROUND Trismus and subsequent restricted range of motion in the temporomandibular joint may impede vital activities of daily living. OBJECTIVE The primary purpose of the current study was to explore the impact of muscle energy techniques on the range of temporomandibular motions in individuals with trismus and restricted range of the temporomandibular motions after third molar extraction surgery. METHODS Eligible volunteers were randomly assigned to either the intervention or control group. Participants in the intervention group received muscle energy techniques over seven consecutive postoperative days, while those in the control group did not receive any intervention. Both groups adhered to the recommended postoperative healthcare protocol provided by a single dentist. The range of cardinal and linear intra-articular motions of the temporomandibular joint was assessed on the first, second and seventh postoperative days in each group using a vernier calliper and an ultrasound machine, respectively. RESULTS The range of linear intra-articular motion (p-value < 0.001) and cardinal motion (p-value < 0.032) of the TMJ significantly increased within groups after the first postoperative week. The range of temporomandibular motions, except for the forward displacement of the mandibular condyle (p-value = 0.193), and the range of mandibular retrusion (p-value = 0.339) exhibited a significant difference between groups (p-value < 0.017) after the first postoperative week. CONCLUSION The current study revealed, for the first time, that muscle energy techniques increase the range of cardinal and linear intra-articular motions in individuals with trismus and restricted range of the temporomandibular motions following third molar extraction surgery. Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is the term used to describe a pathology (dysfunction and pain) in the masticatory muscles and temporomandibular joint (TMJ). There is an apparent upward trend in the publication of dental research and a need to continually improve the quality of research. Therefore, this study was conducted to analyse the use of sample size and effect size calculations in a TMD randomised controlled trial. METHODS The period was restricted to the full 5 years, i.e., papers published in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. The filter article type-"Randomized Controlled Trial" was used. The studies were graded on a two-level scale: 0-1. In the case of 1, sample size (SS) and effect size (ES) were calculated. RESULTS In the entire study sample, SS was used in 58% of studies, while ES was used in 15% of studies. CONCLUSIONS Quality should improve as research increases. One factor that influences quality is the level of statistics. SS and ES calculations provide a basis for understanding the results obtained by the authors. Access to formulas, online calculators and software facilitates these analyses. High-quality trials provide a solid foundation for medical progress, fostering the development of personalized therapies that provide more precise and effective treatment and increase patients' chances of recovery. Improving the quality of TMD research, and medical research in general, helps to increase public confidence in medical advances and raises the standard of patient care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The most common cause of mouth and facial pain is a temporomandibular joint disorder, which affects the patient's quality of life and interferes with their ability to perform daily tasks. OBJECTIVE The purpose was to compare the effects of the Post-Isometric Relaxation Technique and Bowen's Therapy on pain, range of motion and functional activity in patients with temporomandibular joint disorders. METHODS This study was a randomized clinical trial. A total of 24 participants were randomly allocated into two groups using the lottery method. Baseline treatment was the same (ultrasound and tapping) in both groups. Group 1 (12 participants) was treated with a post-isometric relaxation technique, and Group 2 (12 participants) with Bowen's therapy for two sessions per week (total duration of 4 weeks). Outcome measures were the Numeric Pain Rating Scale, Maximal mouth opening inter-incisal rural and jaw functional limitation scale-20. SPSS version 25 was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS A significant improvement in pain, range of motions and functional activities in the post-isometric group showed significant results (p < 0.05) as compared to Bowen's group (independent t-test). However, within-group comparison (paired t-test), both groups showed significant results (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION This study concluded that post-isometric relaxation was more effective in terms of pain, range of motions for mouth opening, lateral deviations and functional activity of temporomandibular joint disorder patients. However, both groups showed clinical results according to minimal clinical difference values. TRIAL REGISTRY NUMBER The trial is registered under ClinicalTrials.govt with reference no. Abstract
BACKGROUND Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) is a common condition affecting the masticatory muscles and joint mobility. OBJECTIVES The primary objective was to compare the effects of massage therapy alone and massage therapy combined with post-isometric relaxation exercises in patients with TMD for pain and maximal mouth opening. DESIGN Assessor-blinded randomized controlled trial. SETTING Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Chaudhry Muhammad Akram Dental Hospital, Lahore Medical and Dental Hospital. SUBJECTS Temporomandibular joint disorder patients. INTERVENTION Group A (n = 23) received conventional treatment including massage and therapeutic exercises consecutively for 2 weeks. Group B (n = 23) received post-isometric relaxation technique along with conventional treatment for consecutive 2 weeks. MAIN MEASURES The main outcome measures were pain and maximal mouth opening. Pain was measured using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and maximal mouth opening (MMO) was measured using the TheraBite Scale. RESULTS Both groups demonstrated significant improvements in pain and MMO scores post-treatment. However, Group B (massage with post-isometric relaxation exercises) showed significantly better outcomes compared to Group A (massage alone). There was a statistically significant difference in post-treatment pain scores (P = 0.000) and MMO scores (P = 0.000) between the two groups. CONCLUSION The results suggest that massage therapy combined with post-isometric relaxation is more effective than massage therapy alone in managing pain and improving mouth opening in TMD patients. The study provides evidence supporting the use of these therapies in TMD management. TRIAL REGISTRY NUMBER NCT05810831. Date of registration/First submission: 15 March 2023.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is a grouping of heterogeneous disorders with multifactorial origins. Stabilization splints (SS) have demonstrated an acceptable treatment effect in TMD. The possible changes at the skeletal, dental, and soft tissue levels need to be addressed to evaluate the benefit/risk ratio of this therapeutic procedure. Accordingly, this study aimed to three‑dimensionally evaluate skeletal, dentoalveolar and soft tissue changes after SS treatment for patients with TMD. METHODS This retrospective study included 74 adult patients with myofascial and/or intra-articular disorders (25 males and 49 females), with an average age of 22.88 ± 4.8 years, who underwent SS treatment. Pre- and post-treatment Cone beam computed tomography were analysed using Invivo 6.0.3 software. The primary outcome was the vertical skeletal and dentoalveolar changes, while the secondary outcomes were the anteroposterior skeletal, dentoalveolar and soft tissue changes. Paired t-test and Wilcoxon rank sum test were used for statistical analyses. RESULTS For the primary outcome; skeletally, there was a significant increase in mandibular plane inclination (difference: 0.82°±1.37), decrease facial height ratio (difference: 0.45%±1.07) and at the dentoalveolar level, the inclination of the functional (FOP-SN, FOP-FH) and bisecting (BOP-SN, BOP-FH) occlusal planes exhibited a significant increase too (difference: 0.38 ± 1.43°, 0.49 ± 1.62°, 0.44 ± 1.29° and 0.41 ± 1.17°, respectively) and also a decrease in the overbite (difference: -0.54 ± 0.83). For the secondary outcomes; there was a significant decrease in mandibular position (SNB) (difference: 1.60 ± 1.36°) and increase in the overjet (difference: 0.93 ± 1.04, p < 0.001) and a significant lower lip retrusion (difference: 0.33 ± 1.01 mm p < 0.01), was observed too. CONCLUSIONS SS therapy resulted in significant vertical skeletal and dentoalveolar changes that were manifested mainly by facial height ratio, mandibular and occlusal plane changes, and to a lesser extent, significant anteroposterior skeletal, dentoalveolar, and soft tissue changes in the form of mandibular position, increased overjet and a more retrusive lower lip. These changes should be considered during patients' selection prior to initiating SS therapy.

Abstract
The presented narrative review aims to present the impact of therapeutic methods on the masticatory muscle activity measured using surface electromyography (sEMG) in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). Original interventional studies with baseline data for diagnosed TMD groups with full-text articles in English published in scientific journals in the last ten years were included in the evaluation process. The following narrative review considered only clinical, controlled, and randomized studies. Articles that included the following parameters were qualified for this review: adult participants, diagnosis of temporomandibular disorder, the presence of a musculoskeletal dysfunction, no other severe comorbidities, use of therapeutic interventions, and sEMG measurement before and after the intervention. Ten papers were accepted and analyzed for the final evaluation in the presented review. Several studies using surface electromyographic examination prove the effectiveness of various therapies to normalize the bioelectrical activity of the masticatory muscles, either reduction during rest or increase during a functional task in patients diagnosed with temporomandibular disorders. This narrative review shows the influence of manual and physical treatments on electromyographic masticatory muscle activity, including soft tissue mobilization, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, low-level laser therapy, and moist heat therapy. Changes in masticatory muscle activity coincided with changes in TMD-associated pain and range of mandibular mobility.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of the study was to make an objective quantitative assessment of effectiveness of procedures with the use of a therapeutic dose of ultrasounds in this nosological entity, in connection with improved biomechanical properties and alleviation of pain experienced in masseter muscles. METHODS The study included 40 patients with temporomandibular disorder. In group 1 (N.=20) ultrasound therapy (1.2 W/cm2) was carried out, while in group 2 (N.=20) sham therapy was applied. A total of 10 procedures were performed. Myotonometric measurements and assessment of pain intensity were carried out before treatment and after the completion of procedures. RESULTS The analysis revealed a significant difference (P=0.011) between the values of decrement (D) measured on day 0 (2.08±0.45 [log]) and day 4 (1.80±0.55 [log]) in group 1. In group 2 no statistically significant differences were noted between the results obtained on consecutive days of the therapeutic cycle. A statistically significant difference in values of decrement (D) between group 1 (1.80±0.55 [log]) and group 2 (2.23±0.51 [log]) was noted on day 4 of the experiment (P=0.021). Both in group 1 and in group 2, a statistically significant reduction of pain intensity (VAS Scale) was obtained. CONCLUSIONS The masseter muscle was more elastic during ultrasound therapy. However, the effect was transient. The analgesic effect was also observed in the control group; therefore, a placebo effect cannot be excluded.

Abstract
This systematic review with meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of local anesthetic administration into temporomandibular joint cavities in relieving pain and increasing mandibular mobility. Randomized controlled trials were included with no limitation on report publication dates. Final searches were performed on 15 October 2023, using engines provided by the US National Library, Bielefeld University, and Elsevier Publishing House. The risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias 2 tool. Articular pain and mandible abduction values and their mean differences were summarized in tables and graphs. Eight studies on a total of 252 patients evaluating intra-articular administration of articaine, bupivacaine, lidocaine, and mepivacaine were included in the systematic review. None of the eligible studies presented a high risk of bias in any of the assessed domains. An analgesic effect of intra-articular bupivacaine was observed for up to 24 h. In the long-term follow-up, there were no statistically significant changes in quantified pain compared to both the baseline value and the placebo group, regardless of the anesthetic used (articaine, bupivacaine, and lidocaine). There is no scientific evidence on the effect of intra-articular administration of local anesthesia on the range of motion of the mandible. Therefore, in the current state of knowledge, the administration of local anesthetics into the temporomandibular joint cavities can only be considered as a short-term pain relief measure.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Physical therapy (PT) methods applied in dentistry are increasingly discussed nowadays. Taking into account a rapidly growing number of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and orofacial pain patients, it is reasonable to determine which of the available physiotherapeutic (PT) methods are more effective than others, especially in terms of their possible analgesic and myorelaxant effects. OBJECTIVE To assess manual and physical factors influencing pain reduction or elimination and increased muscle tension in patients with TMD; yet the influence of the applied forms of PT on the range of motion (ROM) of temporomandibular joints (TMJ). MATERIAL AND METHODS A randomized, parallel-group, RCT, single-blind, equi-randomized (1:1) study was conducted in DC/TMD Group Ib patients (20-45 years of age). An experimental group (G1, n = 104) and a control group without TMD (G2, n = 104) were created according to CONSORT guidelines. Diagnostic measurements were performed in both groups (mass sEMG, temporomandibular joint range of motion-ROM, pain intensity - NRS). Group G1 was randomly divided (envelope method) into 4 therapeutic groups, in which therapy was carried out for 10 days: magnetostimulation (MS), magnetoledotherapy (MLE), magnetolaserotherapy (MLA), manual therapy (MT). Each time after the therapy, ROM and NRS measurements were performed, and after the 5th and 10th day sEMG. RESULTS Statistically significant differences were found in the sEMG values of the masseter muscles, TMJ ROM and the pain intensity in G1 and G2 (p < 0.00). The largest decrease in sEMG (% MVC) of the masseter muscle occurred in the subgroup in which the manual therapy (MT) procedures were applied, p < 0.000. There was no clinically significant difference in and between other subgroups. There was a distinct mandible ROM increase noted in the MT group, with minimal changes in the MLA and MLE groups and no changes in the MS group. There was a clear increase in the lateral mobility of both right and left TMJ in the MT group. There were no differences in the course of the study in the MS group, and slight increases in the MLA and MLE groups. In the case of pain measurements, the greatest decrease in pain intensity was observed in the MT subgroup. CONCLUSIONS According to our results manual therapy is an effective form of treatment in patients with pain, increased masticatory muscle tension and limitation in mandible ROM. Dental physiotherapy should become an integral part of multimodal TMD patients' treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To estimate the clinical efficacy of early masticatory myofunction rehabilitation combined with conventional functional appliances for the treatment of class Ⅱ, division 1 malocclusion in orthodontic children during the growing phase. MATERIALS AND METHOD A comparative retrospective cohort study, enrolled patients diagnosed with class Ⅱ/1 in the stage of late mixed or early permanent dentition. Patients were divided into a TBA group (Cohort 1): receiving Twin-block appliance treatment; and a MMR group (Cohort 2): receiving either early masticatory myofunction rehabilitation as adjunctive therapy combined with the same conventional functional appliances. The study variables were active (Phase 1) treatment duration, oral esthetic subjective impact score (OASIS), several cephalometric indices calculated from X-ray photographs, the maximum voltage (mV) and asymmetry index (AsI) of anterior temporalis (TA) and masseter muscles (MM) before and after treatment. Complications were also recorded. RESULTS A total of 424 cases were enrolled. The mean treatment duration in the MMR group was 168.33 days (SD: 25.43) and 215.00 days (SD: 28.81) in the TBA group; mean difference: -46.67 days (95% CI: [-81.62, -11.71]), P<0.001. For the OASIS outcome measure, there was no statistically significant difference between the mean total scores for the MMR group (18.83±7.73) or TBA group (17.67±6.47) groups adjusted to include pre-treatment OASIS scores (P = 0.783). After treatment, sella-nasion-B point (SNB), mandibular incisor angle, maxillary base and mandibular base in both two groups were significantly increased, while AB plane angle (ANB), maxillary incisor angle, overjet and overbite were significantly decreased. The mV and AsI of TA and MM were also improved following treatment. However, no significant differences were observed between two groups. CONCLUSION Our results confirmed that early masticatory myofunction rehabilitation in combination with conventional TBA for patients in the growing phase was significantly effective in the management of class Ⅱ/1 in orthodontic treatment, which could significantly shorten the treatment duration and had the similar improvement in the cephalometry data, OASIS scores and masticatory muscles function when comparing to conventional TBA alone.

Abstract
The limited number of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the efficacy of soft tissue manual therapy and self-therapy interventions prompted the authors to focus on the analgesic and myorelaxant use of massage, post-isometric muscle relaxation (PIR) and therapeutic exercise in TMD patients. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effectiveness of soft tissue therapy and therapeutic exercises in female patients with pain, increased masseter muscle tension and limited mandibular mobility. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study was conducted on a group of 82 women (G1) with the Ib disorder diagnosed in DC/TMD (Ib-myofascial pain with restricted mobility). The control group (G2) consisted of 104 women without diagnosed TMDs (normal reference values for TMJ ROM and masseter muscle sEMG bioelectric activity). Diagnostic procedures were performed in both groups (sEMG of the masseter muscles at baseline and during exercise, measurement of TMJ mobility, assessment of pain intensity-NRS scale). The G1 group was randomly divided into 3 therapeutic groups in which the therapy was carried out for 10 days: therapeutic exercises (TE), manual therapy - massage and therapeutic exercises (MTM_TE), manual therapy - PIR and therapeutic exercises (MTPIR_TE). Each time after therapy, the intensity of pain and TMJ mobility were assessed. Sealed, opaque envelopes were used for randomization. After 5 and 10 days of therapy, bilateral sEMG signals of the masseter muscles were acquired. RESULTS Massage, PIR and self-therapy led to a decrease in sEMG at rest as well as in exercise. After day 6 of therapy, the groups obtained a significant difference (p = 0.0001). Each of the proposed forms of therapy showed a minimal clinically significant difference (MID) in the sEMG parameter at the endpoint, with the most considerable difference in the MTM_TE group. The forms of MT used were effective in reducing the patients' pain intensity; however, a significant difference between therapies occurred after 4 treatments (p = 0.0001). Analyzing the MID between methods, it was observed that self-therapy had an analgesic effect only after 8 treatments, while PIR after 3 and massage after 1 treatment. After day 7, the mean pain score in the MTM_TE group was 0.889 and in the TMPIR_TE group was 3.44 on the NRS scale. In terms of MMO, a significant difference was obtained between monotherapy and each form of TM, i.e. massage (p = 0.0001) and PIR (p = 0.0001). Analyzing mandibular lateral movements, the authors got a significant difference in the proposed MT forms, of which massage treatments exceeded the effectiveness of PIR. CONCLUSIONS Soft tissue manual therapy and therapeutic exercise are simple and safe interventions that can potentially benefit patients with myogenic TMDs, with massage showing better analgesic effects than PIR.

Abstract
Temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) is a burgeoning area of study within the dental field. TMD is caused by abnormalities in the temporomandibular joint or muscles of mastication and can lead to pain, loss of function, and other complications. As this area of patient care receives increased focus, the ability to accurately diagnose TMD becomes paramount. The aim of this review is to summarize novel diagnostic and therapeutic techniques that have been proposed within the last approximately 3 years in order to inform readers of the cutting-edge advances in the field of TMD diagnosis and management, while also analyzing the clinical relevance of each study. A PubMed search was completed on 1 March 2023, using MeSH terms related to TMD diagnosis and treatment. The search yielded seven articles that pertained to the aim of this review article. The main findings from each study are summarized in this review article. These novel methods of diagnosing and treating TMD may improve our ability to assess and treat patients suffering from TMD.

Abstract
Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) encompass a diverse array of conditions affecting both the structure and function of the jaw. The aetiology of TMDs is multifactorial and may arise from muscular and joint disorders, degenerative processes, or a combination of various symptoms. The objective of this review was to analyse the physiotherapy treatment techniques used for the management of temporomandibular disorders. This review also aimed to compare the effectiveness of the differenttreatment methods used and identify the dysfunctions for which physiotherapy interventions are applied as the main treatment. A systematic literature review was conducted using the PubMed, ScienceDirect, Dialnet, and PEDro databases. After applying the inclusion criteria, 15 out of 656 articles were included. The application of different physiotherapy techniques, both alone and in combination, is effective in controlling the primary symptoms of TMD in patients. These symptoms include pain, functionality, and quality of life. The use of physiotherapy as a conservative intervention method for TMDs is supported by sufficient scientific evidence. The combination of different therapies within physiotherapy achieves the best results in treatment. Therapeutic exercise protocols, in combination with manual therapy techniques, are the most commonly utilized method for addressing TMDs and thus provide the best results according to the analysed studies.

Non-invasive approach is gaining an increasing recognition in the TMD patients management. It is therefore reasonable to conduct RCTs evaluating the effectiveness of both physical and manual physiotherapy interventions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the short-term efficacy of selected physiotherapeutic interventions and their effect on the bioelectrical function of the masseter muscle in patients with pain and limited TMJ mobility. The study was conducted on a group of 186 women (T) with the Ib disorder diagnosed in DC/TMD. The control group consisted of 104 women without diagnosed TMDs. Diagnostic procedures were performed in both groups. The G1 group was randomly divided into 7 therapeutic groups in which the therapy was carried out for 10 days: magnetostimulation (T1), magnetoledotherapy (T2), magnetolaserotherapy (T3), manual therapy- positional release and therapeutic exercises (T4), manual therapy - massage and therapeutic exercises (T5), manual therapy - PIR and therapeutic exercises (T6), self therapy - therapeutic exercises (T7). In the T4 and T5 groups, the treatments led to complete resolution of pain after the 10th day of therapy and to the largest minimal clinically significant difference in the MMO and LM parameter. GEE model for PC1 values using treatment method and time point showed that T4, T5 and T6 treatments had the strongest effect on the parameters studied. Therefore, it may be concluded that SEMG testing is a helpful indicator to assess the therapeutic effectiveness of physiotherapeutic interventions. However, there were numerous controversies reported regarding the use of surface electromyography (SEMG) in Orofacial Pain patients. Therefore, we wanted to assess the effectiveness of physiotherapy interventions in TMD patients using SEMG. PURPOSE Evaluation of the short-term efficacy of selected physiotherapeutic interventions and their effect on the bioelectrical function of the masseter muscle in patients with pain and limited TMJ mobility. A score of 99% in the PC1 parameter, demonstrates the clinical relevance of electromyography (MVC). RESULTS Synergism of physical factors will lead to a higher MID on the NRS scale. Evaluating the MID of the therapeutic interventions used showed a better therapeutic effect of manual interventions over physical and self-therapy. In the T4 and T5 groups, the treatments led to complete resolution of pain after the 10th day of therapy and to the largest minimal clinically significant difference in the MMO and LM parameter. GEE model for PC1 values using treatment method and time point showed that T4, T5 and T6 treatments had the strongest effect on the parameters studied. CONCLUSIONS 1. Exercise SEMG testing is a helpful indicator to assess the therapeutic effectiveness of physiotherapy interventions. 2. Manual therapy treatments are superior to physical treatments in their relaxation and analgesic efficacy and should therefore be prescribed as a first line non-invasive intervention for TMD pain patients.

Abstract
Patients affected by neurological disorders can develop stomatognathic diseases (SD) related to decreased bite force and quality of mastication, bruxism, severe clicking and other temporomandibular disorders (TMD), which deeply affect patients' swallowing, masticatory and phonation functions and, therefore, their quality of life. The diagnosis is commonly based on medical history and physical examination, paying attention to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) range of movements, jaw sounds and mandibular lateral deviation. Diagnostic tools such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are used instead in case of equivocal findings in the anamnesis and physical evaluation. However, stomatognathic and temporomandibular functional training has not been commonly adopted in hospital settings as part of formal neurorehabilitation. This review is aimed at describing the most frequent pathophysiological patterns of SD and TMD in patients affected by neurological disorders and their rehabilitative approach, giving some clinical suggestions about their conservative treatment. We have searched and reviewed evidence published in PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus and Cochrane Library between 2010 and 2023. After a thorough screening, we have selected ten studies referring to pathophysiological patterns of SD/TMD and the conservative rehabilitative approach in neurological disorders. Given this, the current literature is still poor and unclear about the administration of these kinds of complementary and rehabilitative approaches in neurological patients suffering from SD and/or TMD.

Abstract
Background To evaluate the effectiveness of dry needling (DN) and instrumental myofascial release (IMR) therapies in the cervico-cranio-mandibular system through pain, bite force, and distribution of occlusal contacts in patients with muscular temporomandibular disorders. Material and Methods Thirty patients were divided into treatment groups: DN (n=15) and IMR (n=15). Therapeutic efficacy regarding pain perception and tolerance of masticatory, facial, and cervical muscles, bite force, and distribution of occlusal contacts were analyzed in this observational longitudinal clinical study pre/post-intervention and pre/post one month of therapeutic intervention. The data were tabulated and statistically analyzed (repeated measures and Bonferroni post-hoc test, p<0.05). Results There was a statistically significant difference in pain between the groups in the comparison of pre- and post-intervention with effect on time versus intervention in the head and neck. Pain perception and tolerance showed a statistical effect of time on the temporal, suboccipital, sternocleidomastoid, mental (right and left), right masseter, and left trapezius muscles. There was a statistically significant effect of the intervention on the mentalis, supraorbital, and infraorbital (right and left) muscles. There was a statistically significant effect of the interaction on the upper masseter (right and left), anterior temporal (left), suboccipital, sternocleidomastoid, and mentalis (left) muscles. There was an increase in post-intervention molar bite force in the groups, with a statistical effect on time versus intervention in the right and left regions. Contact of occlusal forces at the maxilla/mandible interface showed a difference between the mean times on teeth 26-36 after versus 1 month after the intervention. Conclusions The two therapeutic techniques are viable for the treatment of muscular temporomandibular disorders; however, IMR proved to be more effective immediately after the intervention and after one month. Abstract
Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is an umbrella term that encompasses many musculoskeletal problems that include the masticatory muscles, the temporomandibular joint, and other associated structures. TMD can be divided into two large groups: those that affect the musculature and those that affect the joint. The treatment of TMD requires the combined skills of physiotherapists and dentists, as well as sometimes psychologists and other medical specialists. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the interdisciplinary approach using physiotherapy and dental techniques on pain in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). This is a Scoping Review of studies investigating the effects of combined therapy on patients with TMD. PRISMA guidelines were followed during this review's design, search, and reporting stages. The search was carried out in the MEDLINE, CINHAL, and EMBASE databases. A total of 1031 studies were detected and analyzed by performing the proposed searches in the detailed databases. After removing duplicates and analyzing the titles and abstracts of the remaining articles, six studies were ultimately selected for this review. All the included studies showed a positive effect on pain decreasing after a combined intervention. The interdisciplinary approach characterized by the combination of manual therapy and splint or electrotherapy can positively influence the perceived symptoms; positively decrease pain; and reduce disability, occlusal impairments, and perception of change.

Abstract
Introduction Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is a multifactorial group of musculoskeletal disorders often with combined etiologies that demand different treatment plans. While pain is the most common reason why patients decide to seek help, TMD is not always painful. Pain is often described by patients as a headache, prompting patients to seek the help of neurologists, surgeons, and ultimately dentists. Due to the unique characteristics of this anatomical area, appropriate diagnostic tools are needed, as well as therapeutic regimens to alleviate and/or eliminate the pain experienced by patients. Aim of the Study. The aim of this study is to collect and organize information on the diagnosis and treatment of pain in TMD, through a review of the literature supplemented by our own clinical experience. Material and Methods. The study was conducted by searching scientific databases PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar for documents published from 2002-2022. The following keywords were used to build the full list of references: TMD, pain, temporomandibular joint (TMJ), TMJ disorders, occlusal splint, relaxing splints, physiotherapy TMD, pharmacology TMD, natural therapy TMD, diagnostic criteria for TMD, and DC/TMD. The literature review included 168 selected manuscripts, the content of which was important for pain diagnosis and clinical treatment of TMD. Results An accurate diagnosis of TMD is the foundation of appropriate treatment. The most commonly described treatments include physiotherapy, occlusal splints therapy, and pharmacological treatment tailored to the type of TMD. Conclusions Based on the literature review and their own experience, the authors concluded that there is no single ideal form of pain therapy for TMD. Treatment of TMD should be based on a thorough diagnostic process, including the DC/TMD examination protocol, psychological evaluation, and cone beam computer tomography (CBCT) imaging. Following the diagnostic process, once a diagnosis is established, a treatment plan can be constructed to address the patient's complaints.

Abstract
Myogenous temporomandibular disorders (M-TMDs) are the most common chronic orofacial pain, affecting the masticatory muscles and, thus, jaw movement. While a concise diagnosis is crucial to formulate a rational treatment plan, the similarities in clinical presentations that M-TMDs share with other neuromuscular disorders affecting the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) could easily confuse physicians. In addition to the basics, such as thorough history taking and meticulous clinical examinations, different imaging techniques are useful adjuncts to facilitate the diagnostic process. This review presents an overview of the current understanding on a variety of diagnostic and treatment modalities for M-TMD patients. It is essential to highlight that there is not a single treatment for all, and the benefits of multidisciplinary strategies have been noted for the effective management of myogenous TMD pain. Treatment modalities ranging from conservative to minimally invasive options are discussed in this review.

Abstract
Hemifacial spasm (HFS) and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain are common facial diseases which cause depression, anxiety, insomnia, and poor quality of life. However, currently there are still no effective therapies to treat HFS and TMJ. Electroacupuncture (EA) has advantages of safety, rapid work, easy operation and convenience. Here, we reported a case of a 50-year-old woman who presented with irregular spasm of eyelids and facial muscles on the left side, and TMJ pain on the right side. The patient had been treated with carbamazepine (20mg per day) and alternative therapies for a year, but still not much improvement in the symptoms. The scores of the Jankovic Rating Scale (JRS), global rating scale (GRS), and visual analog scale (VAS) were 7, 60, and 7 points, respectively. The EMG test showed that the spastic side had higher R1 amplitude, longer R2 duration, and larger R2 area than the non-spasmodic side, and the occurrence rate of the lateral spread responses (LSR) in the Orbicularis oris and the Orbicularis oculi muscle was 60% and 40%, respectively. We considered this patient had left HFS and right TMJ pain. EA was successfully undertaken for two periods over 30 weeks. After EA, JRS and VAS were reduced sharply, and the symptoms of HFS were stable without recurrence. However, the frequency of the lower eyelid increased gradually during the 6-month follow-up. These findings reveal that EA with the frequency of 2 Hz and intensity of ~ 1–2 mA may be a benefit for alleviating symptoms of HFS and TMJ pain without adverse reaction. The potential mechanisms of EA in HFS and TMJ pain co-morbidity involve brain stem mechanism and DNIC mechanism for distal acupuncture and segmental mechanism for local acupuncture analgesia.
