Functional Impairments and Related Factors in Adolescents with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder During the COVID-19 Normalization Stage

Background

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a disorder associated with significant functional impairments that can have important consequences for the individual and the society. Those with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder were reported to be more vulnerable in the face of difficulties and experience more psychological problems during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. It was shown that the psychological problems experienced during the pandemic could persist during the normalization stage. We aimed to assess functional impairment in adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and the related factors during the normalization stage which involved the initiation of fully face-to-face schooling practices.

Methods

This is a cross-sectional study including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (n = 52) and a healthy control group (n = 52). Functional impairment was assessed using the Weiss functional impairment rating scale self and parent forms. We also examined the factors associated with functional impairment (internalizing-externalizing problems, parenting strategies, and perceived expressed emotion).

Results

Adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder had higher functional impairment scores on Weiss functional impairment rating scale self and parent in all sub-domains and total. Weiss functional impairment rating scale self and parent total mean score had a positive correlation with negative parenting and externalizing-internalizing scores and a negative correlation with the positive parenting score. Weiss functional impairment rating scale-self total mean score was positively correlated with negative parenting and externalizing-internalizing scores and perceived expressed emotion scores.

Conclusion

Our results suggest that the effects of the pandemic on children's functioning may persist in the normalization stage. For a comprehensive evaluation and effective intervention, it is important that comorbid symptoms, parenting strategies, and the perceived family climate are evaluated from the perspectives of both the parent and the adolescent.

Factors Affecting English Language Teachers' Behavioral Intentions to Teach Online under the Pandemic Normalization of COVID-19 in China

The unexpected outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic forced most teachers across the globe to switch their teaching from traditional face-to-face to online without having received adequate preparation and knowledge related to online teaching. To better comprehend teachers' willingness to conduct emergency remote teaching during the worldwide crisis, the current study was designed to examine teachers' intentions and, in particular, the factors affecting their behavioral intentions to teach online, by contextualizing the research in the English language teaching settings in China. The research model was developed based on an extended technology acceptance model (TAM) by adding subjective norm, self-efficacy, technological complexity, and facilitating conditions into the original TAM. The data were obtained from a total of 287 respondents including 228 (79.4%) female teachers and 59 (20.6%) male teachers via online questionnaires. The questionnaire was developed by adapting previously validated instruments and then refined by two educational technology experts in order to better suit the current study. The empirical findings, using structural equation modeling (SEM), showed that the extended TAM was valid in predicting English language teachers' intentions to teach online during the pandemic normalization. At the same time, the findings suggested that teachers' intentions were influenced significantly by attitude, facilitating conditions, and self-efficacy; language teachers' attitude toward online teaching was significantly affected by both its perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use; perceived usefulness had a significant association with perceived ease of use and subjective norms; and perceived ease of use was significantly impacted by self-efficacy and facilitating conditions. Perceived usefulness was not suggested as a significant determinant of English language teachers' intentions to adopt online teaching. Despite some limitations, the study has several implications from the perspective of theory and practice. The more factors with a higher influence should be determined from different perspectives in future research.

Increase the Number of Views and Shares of COVID-19 Videos: Content Relevance and Emotional Consistency with Virus Variant Topics

(1) Background: The coronavirus variants have posed serious challenges for the prevention and control of the COVID-19 pandemic. Individuals selectively watch and forward videos that help them reduce the damage caused by the virus. Therefore, the factors influencing video viewing and sharing in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic caused by virus variation must be explored. (2) Method: Based on a combination of uncertainty reduction theory and functional emotion theory, this paper designed hypotheses regarding how content relevance and emotional consistency affect video views and shares. We used the support vector machine (SVM) classification algorithm to measure the content relevance between videos and virus variant topics. We performed sentiment analysis of video text to evaluate the emotional consistency between videos and virus variant topics. Then, we used empirical analysis to build the model. (3) Results: The trained SVM classifier was effective in judging whether the video text was related to virus variant topics (F = 88.95%). The content relevance between COVID-19 videos and virus variant topics was generally low. The results showed that the higher the content relevance, the more views (IRR = 1.005, p = 0.017) and shares (IRR = 1.008, p = 0.009) the video received. Individuals were more willing to view (IRR = 1.625, p < 0.001) and share (IRR = 1.761, p < 0.001) COVID-19 videos with high emotional consistency with virus variant topics. (4) Conclusions: The results of empirical analysis showed that content relevance and emotional consistency between videos and virus variant topics significantly positively impacted video views and shares. The trained SVM classifier can support public health departments in monitoring and assessing the COVID-19 pandemic. Our study provides management advice while helping individuals reduce harm and inform next-step decisions.
